An insightful history of Collier County, first published in 1957 (prior to the Mackle Brothers' development of Marco Island), which makes for an interesting read

A lot more thorough than I thought it would be, and appropriately filled with historical images and maps. I appreciate how the book is broken up by area. I am no history buff and the book was dry at times, but Tebau has a way of writing that kept my interest.

Not relevant to the book itself, but I find it fascinating to learn more about where I live. We just celebrated the Centennial of its existence as a county in Everglades City, and much has changed since the publishing of this book. It's pretty sad to hear descriptions and see images of how wild things once were. That's changing so rapidly as the county develops more and more green space into perfectly manicured, gated communities. We are still fortunate to have been the "last" frontier as we were able to conserve a lot of land for wildlife, and the bulk of eastern Collier is permanently protected by the County, State, or Federal governments. Hopefully we don't become like Miami/Fort Lauderdale, though at some point the only place left to grow will be up.

Having lived in collier county for 5 years and growing up in Florida this book had some very interesting info. Cool how young this county is and enjoyed learning about the early natural resources that were basically exterminated. I actually have come across some of the families mentioned in this book as early settlers of the county. Picked it up at broward main library, I get the impression it's a U Miami book without broad circulation.

Interesting history on Collier County. Many lessons to be learned from the mistakes of history. Also the inspiration and vision of one man can lead to development like Collier County experienced.
