Author Bio: Once upon a time in the boot of Louisiana, a young girl made a mess of things and began writing dark poetry to cope. She often found herself daydreaming and creating stories in a far away land that didn't exist and was always out of her reach. Her mission was to move on, find love and a reason to believe in the beautiful things in life. She didn't expect to be counting her blessings daily for all that she has found since then. Her once dark poetry became colorful and bright—it became music. She found purpose and her make believe stories slowly vanished away. Her poetry also sat in the backseat, as more important things took priority. However, life can catapult you in the blink of an eye. A long forgotten coping mechanism of writing would once again become her escape. This time, though, she realized that this escape where she created stories was not a curse, but a gift. Embracing her voice, she breathes life into her characters and poetically weaves together stories for readers to enjoy. She is no longer the young girl who feared the unknown, but is stronger and has faith that beautiful things will always be in reach. She is married to her best friend, and is a mom to three beautiful daughters who are her favorite cheerleaders. She is excited to have the opportunity to share her love of writing with readers. The stories are fictional, but they are real to her. She has always felt things passionately and this new journey as an author is no different. She is no longer looking back, but looking ahead to this amazing adventure with all of you. She invites you to connect with her if you desire to do so.

This dealt with many cliches, but the language was so vivid and descriptive which made me want to keep reading. However, it was a little annoying when the poems changed font a couple times when I flipped the pages and then went back to normal a few pages later. Plus, the lack of titles for each poem made it hard to distinguish whether the poem was still continuing or it started a new one.
It was a hit or miss kind of book to me. There were some poems that mesmerized me but there were also quite a few ones that made me say, "MEH. *flips to another page*"
Also, I just wish that the author had at least put a title to the poems. It was really confusing to read because I don't know if the next page is a continuation to the one before it or not.
"... a community of chaos drunk on the idea of normality."
"Keep asleep the woes of yesterday for they are no longer real."
Not the best poetry book in general, but it does serve a purpose. It engages the reader on the poetic's voice personal journey. It could be used as an introductory text. May be a great text to present poetry to a young audience. Probably some poems could be used in a class to complement another reading, such as a short story.
I am not much on poetry, but this collection is good. It's mostly non-rhyming, and not really rhythmic, either. So it almost reads more like prose. Little, bite-sized pieces of life and love and what it means to be human. Some of the themes may feel a little trite or cliche, but still worth another take on them. Like some others have said, I would have appreciated titles. Some of the longer poems take up a full page and it's not immediately clear if the next page is a continuation or a new poem.
Some of my highlights:
"A heart like honey, you pollinated the earth with kind words, and when you laughed, it was like watching a flower bloom. When asked, others may say different things but what I remember is that you were a garden of color entirely sweet and lovely and when you left, you uprooted from me the flowers for which i had a reason to shine."
Who wouldn't want to be described like that?
******
"And the world will continue to bleed until one thing is understood: Beauty is not an outer expression but an inner feeling and love is not an inner feeling but an outer expression"
This is not a new thought, but it never hurts to be reminded.
******
"There is no greater battle than choosing to abstain from war"
Boom.
******
"Let's build a snow globe of memories together, you and me, so even when this season pass and life returns to grey we simply give our self a little shake and down will fall every piece of joy we've ever felt and with each glittering piece of white we will remember this love, this perfect storm"
"And she wondered just how she was supposed to decide what to do with her life when she couldn't even decide on breakfast."
There were many poems that made and impact to me and some even touched my heart, but there were a few that didn't appeal to me. I like this poetry book though 😌💗
This has been one of my favourite reads this whole year! It was very pleasant to read. Some poems ever inspired me to write poems of my own, which can say how thought-provoking this book can be.
5/5 Would recommend too anyone who loves poetry - this is a gem!
If I was in grade 4 killing time while reading this, I definitely would have appreciated this 'poetry' book. But I was dragging myself through the pages, cringing at how sappy the words were strung.
I loved the imagery in this and the way each page tore at my soul a little more with gentle hands of beauty and wonder. I am in complete awe from this read
This book had some poetry that completely blew me away and that I felt greatly moved by, but others that felt very unpolished. Overall, it is definitely worth the read, and the tone has a lovely feel throughout the whole book, but it would have been nice to see a couple poems (out of the many beautiful ones!) that were further edited. For the price it is definitely worth reading and recommending to others.
If you're into love poems and fiery passion, this book might be for you. Michelle's "Kalopsia" contained a mixture of long and short pieces throughout. Some are beautifully worded and some are a tad confusing. Nearly all of this poetry sounded nice, but not all of it was clear to me. Granted, that is sometimes how poetry works. Overall, I would give this book three and a half stars. "Kalopsia" is short and easy to read, and it's always intriguing to see another poet's take on life!
This was really good for a free modern poetry collection. I did a decent amount of highlighting, more so in the first half than in the second but would definitely recommend trying if you like modern poetry!
5/5 excellent read of contemporary poetry. Similar to rupi kuar but maybe even better as its more enigmatic and not as graphic as some things rupi has written that i don’t like. Id like to read other books by andrea Michelle, this book, though, is a good intro and talks about many topics.
This book of poems is uplifting and inspirational. The words paint a picture of reality and make you feel that you are not alone. Although the title and description call to an audience of younger readers than myself, I found this poetry in relation to my own life and age group.
"Maybe it's the people who walk around, delicate as paper, holding matches and destroying their own selves. And in our pile of ash we scoff at all the burning bodies, as if our flame is less destructive than theirs. -Michelle, Andrea. Kalopsia: The Best Contemporary, Modern Poetry for Young People for Free! (Kindle Locations 370-375). Unknown. Kindle Edition."
Beautifully written, well written and a gorgeous cover. It looks wonderful on my kindle, phone and on my computer. It was an absolute pleasure to read.
I feel really bad saying this but I really felt there weren't a lot of good poems in this. Actually, most felt repetitive, in the messages they try to convey, and the images used. It goes on and on. Frankly, it bored me. I think I initially had high hopes but they really fell when I read this (and then skimmed by the later half, because, duh: repetitive).
In the beginning, I really liked this collection. It read beautifully and I related to it well. As I got further in, it started losing its luster for me. Over all the flow from one poem to the next is nice. I recommend it to poetry lovers.
Nice and simple poetry that is aimed towards jr. high/high school kids. It would have been nice to have a title or some sort of break between each poem. At times, it was confusing as to whether or not the poem had continued.
The majority of this collection is highly cliche and lacking unique form or perspective. However, there were so many breathtakingly beautiful single lines or stanzas nestled in the midst of it all that I kept turning the pages seeking more. I look forward to reading Andrea Michelle's next collection.
Update--After finishing this collection, I stumbled upon Andrea's YouTube channel (AndreaRatzlaff). It is beautiful. I wish this collection had included a disclaimer that these poems were formed as spoken-word. My perspective when reading this collection would have been much more positive with a frame of reference to go by, instead of looking for form and structure that was never intended to be there.
Oh goodness did I enjoy the poems in this book! It's always a fun experience reading things that make me think about life, love, spirituality, and everything in between!
