He is the bard of India. Singing of the splendours of its landscape and people in words of unsurpassed beauty. His poetry, ranging from love songs to mystic verse, children's rhymes to soaring lyrics of hope. Rabindranath Tagore was not just a poet, he was also popular writer of fiction, essays and plays. He set his songs to music and two of them are the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. Then in his sixties he became an acclaimed painter. Tagore also founded Santiniketan, as an idealistic school that later became the Visva Bharati University.
