The Greatest Risk is to Take No Risk At All.
Nationwide food shortages have sparked civil unrest, and the Office of Civilian Safety and Defense’s hold on the people is slipping. The Resistance’s efforts to hasten the OCSD’s demise have resulted in disaster, with Tommy Bailey and Careen Catecher taking the blame for the ill-fated mission in OP-439.
Both teens struggle to survive the circumstances that force them into the national spotlight—and this time, they’re on opposite sides. On the run and exiled from the Resistance members in BG-098, Tommy makes his way to a Resistance safe house in the capital.
The OCSD is preparing to monitor all under-eighteens with the Cerberean Link, a device that protects them against hunger and sickness and can even locate them if they’re lost. Tommy’s now living in close quarters with Atari, an operative who’s been assigned to sabotage the Link. But does Atari plan to use it for his own purposes?
Through it all, Tommy refuses to believe Careen’s loyalties have shifted away from the Resistance, and he’s willing to assume any risk to reconnect with her. Will they be able to trust each other when it matters most?
*Thank you to the author for giving me a free e-copy. This review is my full and honest opinion.*
Wow, if this is possible, I think I liked this book even more than than its prequels!
I think the character development in this book was so powerful. Careen and Tommy definitely changed the most (in my opinion) and I thought that they were heartbreaking examples of the loss of innocence of young people in a world that forced everyone to grow up too quickly.
The dynamic between those two was definitely realistic - I had been so tired of reading about two sappy lovers who were attached at the hip even in dystopian times, and I felt like this book really encompasses the kind of fear and anxiety that people fear in these times, even if they're with someone they love.
Atari was also one of my favorite characters - he was so sassy and wacky - I loved him so much :)
Ignite is possible the best title this book could have been given. It's obviously the third in the Counteract series and it really is opening a lot of doors for this Resistance we have all come to love and know a bit more. I feel like every character grew, good or bad the development is obvious and it is so incredibly entertaining to read. While I was reading it, I told Tracy the author how much I loved Danni. It is so amazing that there is an imperfect female character just trying to make her way in the world. She isn't a hero, she just is a girl and she really isn't that exciting when we first met her in book 2. As the characters and plot thicken I noticed that the author does this kinda fun thing at the end of most chapters, she like adds a little "make you think" quote and it literally reshaped how I thought of the conversation and the characters involved. Young Adult literature needs to be more like this. There's things happening. And yes there is love and lust and change..... But that isn't our focus here. My favorite part was in the end seeing the way that Tommy took care of Careen. We never think of the male characters having trauma but he opened up and managed to make her feel safe even though he was breaking apart inside!
You'll love Atari and how quirky he is... Plus lets be honest. I'm a huge nerd and all of his references made me squeal! Each character is weird and funny and imperfect and that is all we really need in the world.
I'm so happy that Tracy sent me this book to read and review before it was fully published. I'm blessed to have gotten to read such an amazing book.
If you guys keep up with me (which you probably don't but HEY), you would know that the last good book I read was Six of Crows. Yeah, I know, right? Maybe I'm overexaggerating when I say it's 'been months' but goodness, it sure feels like it has been forever. Literally every book I picked up after that disappointed me in one way or another, but then I read this and...thank God for Ignite. Seriously, this book finally got me out of my reading slump. I LOVED IT SO MUCH.
I honestly didn't think these books could get any more fantastic, but with this one IT DID GET EVEN BETTER. It was action-packed and intriguing from the very first page -- I was instantly hooked. It was everything I could want and more.
And can we talk about the character development? So much of it. We see Careen and the rest of them struggle and get back up. Careen & Tommy's relationship was also tested quite a bit.
We got to see a different side of the characters and it was fantastic. They're all so well-developed and unique characters and I love every single one of them.
Also, gotta love Eduardo and all the Spanish that was in here ;)
Another thing I might add is that Lawson's writing just gets better and better as the series progresses. I've loved her writing since Counteract but wow, she just keeps improving more and more.
Overall, this is most definitely one of my favorite series that I would recommend to all and I'm so pumped for the next book!
This is a book you can read everywhere. Stay up late reading in bed; sit on the edge of your seat poolside; and devour it in any book club. Ignite is a thrilling, cliffhanging novel that you won't want to put down. The characters are a well rounded group that you won't want to say goodbye to. From the courageous power couple who have to suffer quite a few knocks to themselves and their relationship, to the deliciously evil head honcho, the characters will leave you astounded. The time stamps keep you in check as you're caught up in the twists and turns. Lawson's descriptions suck you in and make you an eager participant of the Resistance. Anyone who loves surprise endings, a good old fashioned duel, a diverse set of characters, and a little rebellion here and there will love Ignite.
*** I voluntarily reviewed this book, I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book, these are my honest ramblings and I hope you enjoy reading them - kat***
PS - I wrote my review via the Goodreads App on my phone only for it to disapear leaving only the line -this is not a trilogy below?????????? #Gremlins at work! so lets try #take2
Okay. .. this series is not a trilogy - so be warned, but YAY the story continues!
This third installment was a tense one,
With food shortages and Careens messages via Peoplecam there is wide spread civil unrest, and OCSD's hold on the situation is slipping under the leadership of Madalyn.
But the Resistance is just as unorganised and Max causes their efforts to back fire with is so called plan to help... with its tragic outcome Tommy and Careen are blamed and Max is made out to be a hero!
Careen ends up getting caught and she is in for a very rough ride, and Tommy finally has to grow up and accept responsibility for his actions - and sets off to help rescue Careen.
The OCSD next plan in nationwide control of the people is the 'Cerberean Link', a device the OCSD will say is to protect. But is it? Being under constant surveilance by the OCSD to me sounds like being tagged and on house arrest to me!
The Double agent Atari, designed the Link. But is he on the side of the resistance? or does he have his own agenda - we are yet to find out.
So what did I think about this latest book in this series - It was a very good story that showed that being in the Resistance isn't as simple as it may first seem.
The Characters are all at odds to what the next step should be, Mitch the Resistance leader seems to have a secret agenda too.
At the end of this book, I learned that there are no black and whites, but constant shades of greys - will Tommy and Careen's blossoming relationship survive her capture? has she been broken beyond repair?
These characters have tough decisions to make...
What is the fate of the US Population - Being drugged into a submissive army may have been stalled for now, but all the kids being ' chipped' may just give the OCSD enough leverage that the adult population would submit to any demand to keep their ofspring safe!
I guess we will have to wait for the 4th book in the series to find out. - Thank goodness its not too far off in the future! ( OMG did I just say that! - I have yet to start my xmas shopping!!! I AM NOT READY FOR 2017!!!!!!)
Pros.... *Tommy is as stalwart as he's always been, if not even more so. He proved himself time and again during the first two novels and despite an upset in book two (hormones...gheesh), he's dedicated hardcore to saving humanity from the OCSD...just not at the loss of Careen. Gotta love a rebel with heart, right? Speaking of Careen...
*Our girl is back and her part to play is former-rebel-turned-downtrodden-yes-woman of the OCSD. Say what?!?!? Exactly. It's hard to watch, I mean read, as they do everything in their power to extract the information they want from the only person in their reach able to deliver it.
*The plot is still spinning but not wildly out of control. There's enough action to get your blood pumping but not so much as to misdirect your attention. New players are being introduced to the group, but determining friend and foe is becoming much more difficult.
Con.... *Careen...I hate to say it, but she was a pro AND a con. While her outbursts and displays of aggression were definitely her, the timid creature that lies down when told, while not secretly plotting either revenge or escape was TOTALLY out of character for the pink highlighted rebel-esque girl we came to love. Did it diminish my care for the character? No...but it did make me want to slap her upside the head and yell what the hades are you doing...this isn't you!
In the end, I was a reader split between camps, but leaning a bit more towards that of fandom. Though there were a few pitfalls this time around that stuck in my craw (there's a phrase I never thought I'd type), there were more plot points and moments of action that dazzled to keep me flicking screens...not to mention that ENDING! Now I need to know if my instincts were right, or if I was duped as well!

Tommy and Careen are back!! Miss Lawson brings this third installment of the Resistance Series to a whole other level. Careen has been caught by the OCSD and is forced to make propaganda videos for the OCSD. Tommy is still part of the resistance trying to keep his faith in Careen. Miss Lawson introduced more characters in Book 2, Resist. In Ignite, she expands those characters, explaining their importance to not only Tommy and Careen, but the resistance. The story continues the action we saw in Resist, but gets a little more in depth of the chaos that ensues. It is fun, interesting, intellectual, and full of excitement. If you haven't started this series, then you really need to. If you have started the series, then you really need to read Ignite. I am excitedly waiting for the next book to come out. According to Miss Lawson's website book #4, Revolt, comes out in July.
***Review has been gifted in exchange for my honest opinion and on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog.*** This is possibly the best book of the series. Each character is definitely showing their true colors which all the turmoil that is going on. There are so many different personalities, however they blend really well together. With all that is going on; the OCSD doing everything they can to retain its power, the Resistance doing whatever they can to protect the population from the OCSD, Tommy is doing whatever it takes to free Careen. There is plenty action going on in this book which will keep you drawn to it. This is a really a great series all around; between characters, plots, and the fact you are constantly own your toes waiting to see what happens next. This should be everyone’s next read!
The intrigue grows in the third book of this series. By the end of it, we don't know who to trust (other than Tommy and Careen). Careen's reaction to Tommy the first time she sees him in Ignite rings true given what she's gone through.
The big criticism I have with the book is that I don't get a sense of scope. Madalyn is supposed to be running the most powerful agency of a Federal government that has taken control of the lives of its four hundred million citizens, and yet, it just feels like she's running (or trying to run) something the size of the Pawnee, IN Parks and Recreation department.
But the strength of the book lies in the interaction of the characters and in who is playing which side. Recommended.

The covers are interesting and present an interesting series. Initially, when looking at them, they don’t appear to be a thriller series of a future dystopian American society that’s about to undergo a coup at the highest level. But that’s exactly what this series is. 2035 better not be this disruptive!
The story is well done. I don’t know how real to life it all is for revolutionists, not ever having been involved in a revolution. But they have their organization and their slip-ups. People get hurt and even killed. This is a serious revolution. Each of our two young heroes, Careen and Tommy, get seriously hurt, shot, and even tortured. There are times when you don’t know who is on which side or which side is good or bad, which I imagine may be authentic to a situation such as this. So many people appeared to know what they were talking about and appeared to be speaking the truth, whether they were or not. People who were in positions of authority and power in the country and law enforcement. But as Hemingway said, power corrupts. It seems to corrupt the weak who can’t stand on their own and have to have something like a title to hold up to show how great they are.
The characters were really well done. Some of them we got to know quite well because we were with them all the way through the book and got to know their quirks and even how they like their coffee. Others just sort of passed through here and there as very minor characters, like Nicole. Poor, scared, Nicole.
The pace was mostly relentless as all five books seemed to barrel towards some horrendous cataclysmic ending. The tension of never quite knowing who was on which side and what would pop out around the next corner kept the tension stretched tight throughout. No rest. No time to catch your breath. Just like the characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series and would strongly recommend it for Young Adult readers of this genre, Political Dystopian Thriller YA with just a touch of young romance thrown in.
Okay I caved, I didn’t think I would get to Ignite this month but it was there on my kindle like a beacon, whispering to me that the other books on my tbr could wait and I’m glad I listened! The story is now so much more now than Tommy and Careen, it really has become a full on Resistance v The State with Tommy and Careen merely players in a game which is much bigger and with far more history behind it than they could imagine.
Careen is under interrogation by Madalyn and the OCSD’s finest – they believe they are interrogating a terrorist and their techniques are real. Things get very intense for Careen as she undergoes humiliating and relentless treatment, what is truth and what is manipulation? As you would expect this type of treatment isn’t easy reading, it’s made all the more heartbreaking by the fact that we all know that this type of treatment exists so we have to feel it with Careen – this series always walks a fine line when it comes to so easily becoming our reality and this brings it home even harder.
With the fall out from Wes’s death in the botched bombing shaking the very foundation of the resistance and with the OSCD in freefall, the public are staging their own revolution as they just aren’t buying the propaganda any more. I love this peaceful protest element and how against the odds Careen’s message still gets through the way she intended. I’m glad that the public is rising up the way it is, I found the scenes at the Essential Services food bank in book 2 really quite shocking, even though again it’s likely the realism that brings it home. The fact that a simple act of standing in a road, causes mayhem for Madalyn is a small victory but will be one that you’ll give a silent high five to.
This book whilst pretty much all out and out action it does feel like a build up to the final book. There are lots of different players with different agenda’s and I had to give up trying to piece them all together because if one thing is clear it is that all will become clear in the final book. The big question is though, will Madelyn be able to turn certain heads? This is certainly becoming a thriller through and through, and with more secrets than ever bursting to get out Revolt is going to be a book not to be missed!
A WISHING SHELF BOOK REVIEW 25th August, 2017 TITLE: Ignite AUTHOR: Tracy Lawson Star Rating: *****
‘Revolution is stirring but will Tommy and Careen survive it? A thrilling ride!’ The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW In the third book of this set, the OCSDs hold is slipping. Civil unrest is growing and the Resistance is battling to win the day. The book primarily follows two characters, Careen and Tommy, as they fight to overthrow the terrible dictatorship. But, in the shadow of the OCSD’s latest plan, a device called the Link, it is also a story of who to trust and who not to.
There is still another book to go in this set. Now, I often find books that can’t ‘end’ the story, rather unsettling. I don’t get to find out if the hero will save the day and, even if I suspect they will, I won’t find out how. For example, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. A wonderfully exciting book, yes, but still incredibly annoying. This book also suffers from this but, I’m happy to report, the author works had to offer her readers plenty of thrills and spills to keep them interested. And most of the thrills seem to spill from Careen. She is put through hell in this book; graphically so, but it is so enthralling and so fantastically written, I was engrossed.
This set of books, including Ignite, is fast-paced, swimming with memorable characters and written by an author who seems to be getting better and better. It is also an interesting study of power and what can happen when the freedom of citizens and what a government insists it must do to protect them is unbalanced.
Ignite, I feel is not a ‘stand-alone’ novel. I strongly recommend that if you enjoy YA thrillers to start at Counteract and enjoy the ride. Trust me, when you get to Book Three, you will be fully addicted and you will enjoy every page of this gripping thriller.
Apart from the first book that started me on this journey, this has got to be my next favourite book in this series. I was surprised that this series was not a trilogy, but after reading this book, I have to admit that this was a good decision; there is just too much to this story for it to be condensed into a trilogy.
I loved that the author didn't shy away from describing brutality and torture, despite this being a YA novel. Many times, authors leave it up to the imagination, but not with this book! It made everything seem so much more real and horrifying, and I felt so much more invested in the story. Again, the author portrays things in such a realistic way that it scares me; the events in this book could easily become reality!
I was also really happy to see that the characters became more developed in this novel. There were still instances of insta-love but there were more struggles. The protagonists really grew up, and the interactions between all of the other characters were also more complex. The story has gotten to a point where the reader now has to question who can be trusted - and I love it!
The plot became more divided in this book as the characters took on different roles and responsibilities within the Resistance. Everything was well-developed and the crossing-over of the different story lines was done really well, keeping things compact.
Overall, this novel was really well done. I loved the depth of the interactions and the complexity of the plot and characters. This was the strongest book so far in the series, and I can't wait to see how the adventure continues! I'm giving this a solid 4/5 stars!
I received this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and I received no incentives.
The Resistance Series keeps getting better and better. It makes me wish I had limitless hours to read so I could be that much closer to learning how the characters fare at the end of the series! Onto Revolt! Thank you, Tracy Lawson!
My favorite book of the series. The uncertainty raises because you don't know what our protagonists are going to do.
Is Tommy ever going to rescue Careen from the OCSD?
Does Careen even want to be rescued, or is she seeing the OCSD in a new light?
Antagonist Madalyn Davies continues to wield power and no one can stop her. Not even the man who appointed her as OCSD Director. You'll also find friction within the Resistance as two factions come to a head. Yes, this Resistance v. the OCSD match has turned into the Resistance v. the Resistance v. the OCSD, with our new character, Mr. Atari, playing the wildcard.
You don't know who is siding with who in this one. And when it's all said and done, you don't know who is working for who. But it makes you want to read Book IV once you get to the ending.
Ignite picks up pretty much where Resist book #2 in the Resistance Series left off. Careen is being held captive and being abused by her captors. She is being forced to reveal many of the resistance secrets. She is being forced to make videos that are not true. She is being forced to push OCSD’s agenda that she does not believe in. She is more or less being blackmailed into confessing things that she did not do.
Tommy is doing everything he can to rescue Careen. He knows that the videos are not true and that Careen is being forced to make them. Tommy still believes in Careen all the way as he is very much in love with her.
The OSCD have come up with a way to tag everyone under the age of eighteen. This device will be used to track everyone under eighteen; it is just another way for them to keep tabs on everyone and know where they are all the time and to keep the people in line and control them.
Ignite is filled with lots of action and suspense around every corner. It will keep you glued to your seat and the pages flipping. There are twists and turns from beginning to end. Ignite like its predecessors likes to hold on to its secrets keeping you hooked. It will give you a little bit of info at a time just enough to keep you hanging on wanting to know what is on the next page. The world building is amazing and gets better and better with each book. The characters are all just as amazing as the story itself.
I would recommend Ignite to all dystopia fans with plenty of action and twists.
"Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now" -- I'm listening to Hamilton as I'm writing this review, and this line just came on. Fittingly poignant for this story. Ignite starts off right where Resist leaves off. Careen is still Careen, fighting for her survival and her freedom. Tommy Jr. is still in love with her. And the Resistance is helping the people and being blamed for causing the problems that it's actually fixing by the OCSD.
I've read and reviewed the first two books in this series and I don't normally read and review YA Dystopians (not that I don't like them, quite the opposite, I love them but I have a hard time finding one that I enjoy that feels original). Sure The Resistance Series in itself isn't all that original. It takes its queues from all good dystopians. There are parts of this that are reminiscent of 1984 all the way to parts that remind me of The Hunger Games series. When you can list a dystopian in the same sentence as these greats -- it's a pretty good series.
I really enjoyed this story. Fearing that I'll ruin or spoil anything I'm going to tiptoe through this part here. But the mental and physical abuse and subsequent reactions/feelings/actions of Careen really take this book to the next level. Lawson definitely did her research on hostages, interrogation, and re-education for this story and it shows. Those scenes might have been the most brutal and hard to read in the whole series, but they were necessary. Even how this book ends was realistic to what Careen would be feeling and going through.
The ending itself is frustrating, but only because I expected this to be a trilogy. I wasn't expecting more books to come after it. I think if I'd gone into it knowing there would be more, the ending wouldn't have bothered me as much. As I stated above, the ending was totally neccesary, just caught me off guard at how quickly the story was over.
Overall, Ignite is easily my favorite book in the series so far. Lawson really hit her stride with this book. It had something for almost everyone in it too. If you haven't picked this series up yet and you enjoy YA Dystopian books, I think you should give them a try.
Some books I just want to write my review and do very little talking about the book and it's points, but this book -- I want to discuss it. So if anyone wants to chat with me about it, comment here, find me on twitter, or let's discuss on goodreads or something. There was so much going on in this book that I want to write about but don't want to make my review a book itself.
What I didn't like about this book: that it ended, and I have to wait for Book 4.
Now that THAT'S out of the way...
On one side of the line we have the OCSD, and its callous, officious head, Madalyn, struggling to retain control at all cost, turning former Resistance figurehead into a scapegoat in the hopes that she'll turn on her former comrades.
On the other we have the Resistance, who have had to escalate their tactics in order to free the population from the OCSD's control.
And caught in the middle are our young heroines, Tommy and Careen. Careen has been taken and Tommy wants to get her back, whatever it takes.
This is a hard book to sum up, so I won't even try. There is a LOT happening. Tracy Lawson's characters, main and supporting, are vividly drawn, and they keep the pace moving at a comfortable, almost lightning speed. After three books, I feel like I know each of them, whether they are good, bad, or in that murky gray area in between. (Atari is awesome.) On top of that, the writing has just gotten better and better.
I wait with bated breath for Part Four. I need to find out if Careen and Tommy win the day (and each other). I want so bad for Madalyn to get the comeuppance she so richly deserves. And I want to finish it so I can read it all over again.
Ignite (Book Three of the Resistance Series) by Tracy Lawson. Ignite picks up where book two left off. Careen, finds herself in a precarious situation, she is forced to make videos citing propaganda for the opposing side. Tommy is torn because he wants to believe that Careen is still on the side of the Resistance.
Great plot development, even better plot twists, and she even adds a new character to the mix. The addition of Atari was brilliant. He added so much depth and lightness to some of the scenes. Tracy Lawson is a talented author, and a creative genius. I will recommend this book to others.
