Writing is my bliss and I try to write every day. I started with two publishers who I learned a lot from. Now I self publish. I like the control it gives me over release dates and book covers.
The story was previously released under the name Luke’s Fate. The story is a clean contemporary Western that is mystery, suspense, danger, deceit, and learning the truth. The two main characters are Meg O’Brien and Luke Kelly. The O’Brien and Kelly ranches were side by side, but there is bad blood and reveries between Harry Kelly and Owen O’Brien that goes back many years. Meg had feelings for Luke and thought he felt that way too, but after their one date, he disappeared, never to be heard from again. So, what a shock when she learns that Luke is back and staying at the ranch. I guess in many ways, the fathers' sins falling on the children could be the motto of this story. Meg and Luke are the two caught up in the issues between their fathers. Harry is in an assisted living home, David has been missing for more than five years, and Luke left, but now is back, but a broken man. He has his own secrets and demons. Meg is hurt, even more angry that Owen has let him return to the ranch. Meg took over the position of ranch foreman and works as hard as the men who work under her. She really doesn’t want to have Luke Kelly back on their ranch, or even in her sight. The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. As the story unfolds, so do secrets, lies, deceit, and death. Now, Luke has a target painted on his back and a hot-shot detective from another county is gunning for finding him guilty. Who is trying to frame Luke and why? Overall, I found the story interesting and a page-turner, but I felt some issues that came up never really felt fully resolved, like a major situation, but an incomplete outcome. Overall, with plenty of angst, learning of the past, and facing the present, Luke and Meg find answers and a chance for a future.

When I began reading this story there seemed to be an air of familiarity about it. I stopped and searched to see if perhaps I’d already read it. I couldn’t find where I had, so I kept reading. I’ve read other books by this author: Texas Haven and Ryelee’s Cowboy. And really enjoy her writing. I should also mention that I’d just finished a trilogy by another author that was pretty intense (more thriller than romance) and was really ready for a feel good romance. That said, I tied to base this review/my opinion of the book based on the quality of writing and not what I was looking to read.
As usual for Ms. Ball, the characters are well developed and play their roles well. Even though most characters can easily be identified as a ‘good guy’ or a ‘bad guy’, I found myself contemplating which bad guy was responsible. There is a good amount of angst and I was never really sure ‘who done it’. I also found myself wondering if one or more of the minor characters may have been on the bad side as well.
My 5 star ratings’ are currently reserved for above and beyond exceptional works, so a 4 star rating is a very good book. I gave Luke’s Fate 3.5 stars instead of a solid 4 because I hate when the lead male +/or female spends too much time stuck thinking ‘he/she is too good for me’ +/or ‘I need to push him/her away for their own good’. Excessive self-deprecation is not an attractive quality.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I thought it ended quite abruptly, but it was still good. An epilogue to give closure would have been nice. I really liked the characters and their storyline.
Contemporary Western romance. Meg was left by a local young man and he returns after five years away. Luke should just keep running; this girl is so judgmental and whines more than anything. I hated her. Minimum sex scenes. Lot of twists and turns with even murder or two thrown in.
I love this book. I have read many books by Kathleen and this one maybe my favorite. The mystery and suspense makes it very entertaining and exciting. Very creative story just when you think you have it figured out a new twist develops. I highly recommend this book and all title's by Kathleen💖💖💖💖💖
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. Never really knowing for sure what is going to happen next. Who all is really involved? What really happened? Will love survive? It doesn't look good.
Luke's Fate is a great read if you like cowboy stories, and I do. Luke and Meg have to overcome a few obstacles but they both love the Mustangs that run on the ranch. There are several twists and turns in the story that keep you guessing. I loved the book.
I enjoyed this book, not the typical western, lots of surprises and suspense woven in amongst the romance. I liked Meg, our heroine. Quiet but feisty and strong, even as her world as she knows it, falls apart around her. I loved Luke from the beginning. Strong of character, even though he's been through hell most of his life. Loving, sensitive and supportive, as a hero should be. All in all, an enjoyable read and I'm giving it 5 stars for the story and the entertainment. But as a few other viewers wrote, it ended too abruptly for me. It really needed an epilogue to make the ending more satisfying for the reader. Sexual content. JudyE
Meg thought she had the perfect life until Luke came back into her life and then everything began to fall apart. This was a gut wrenching book with love, lies and betrayal all mixed in. I admired Meg and her strength throughout the many struggles she endured. I couldn't put the book down and read it from start to finish. The flow was so smooth that I never took notice of staying up all night. This is a must read for Contemporary Western Romance readers.
The developing of the primary characters was good. I was disappointed towards the end when the woman seem to fall apart ......too long and too over done.
