From leading expert Eliana Gil, this book provides child clinicians with essential knowledge and tools for evaluating and working with posttraumatic play. Such play, which is often repetitive and disturbing, may help resolve traumatic experiences--but can also become toxic. The book guides the clinician to determine what is going on with a given child and intervene sensitively and effectively. Evocative case material is interwoven with up-to-date information on the developmental impact of trauma and ways to facilitate children's natural reparative capacities. A reproducible assessment checklist to help clinicians differentiate between useful and dangerous posttraumatic play can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.
A really great book with many examples of post traumatic play. I would have liked an example of how to write case notes, but besides that it was super informative.
I enjoyed the structure of the book. The first half was mostly education about the types of postraumatic play and how to identify which type the child is demonstrating. The second half is case scenarios that really show how the first half shows up in practice. Both halves were so valuable and I feel more confident in identifying and working with post traumatic play. I also appreciated the activities provided.
Some of the stories in the book were pretty disturbing to me. I had to take it quite slowly. I like how the author describes helpful play vs. toxic play. Really helpful resource
