I wanted to like this. I thought the idea of trying to explain some "bigger" christian concepts to young children was a good one but the execution of it failed. It was disjointed, and trying to be too clever it made it only confusing, with the parallels not always making sense. I did like that it mentioned that while the Easter Bunny can remind us of surprises and gifts, it is God that gave us Easter.

Ages: 3 - 7

Cleanliness: Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are mentioned.

A Powerful Message for Children about the meaning of Easter

Holidays are special celebrations and young children need to learn the importance of different holidays. In GOD GAVE US EASTER, little cub and papa bear are speaking in the opening page. The little cub loves Easter and papa tells her Easter is even better than Christmas. Papa says, “Because on Christmas, we celebrate Jesus; birthday. But on Easter, we remember we get to be with him forever.”

Best-selling author Lisa Tawn Bergren has written deep spiritual messages yet simplified for young children.. The words are combined with beautiful illustrations from Laura J. Bryant. Parents will be drawn to read this book over and over to your child. I love the messages in this book and highly recommend GOD GAVE US EASTER.

some parts could use work but pretty good

I like the gentle approach to Easter for purposes of exposure to the subject. Though there are some things that I would prefer were different. That said, I think the way the story is told is charming

Little Cub has lots of questions about Easter as she celebrates with her family. Papa explains all about the special day as they walk through nature where they live.

The language used in the book is simple enough that both of my children (4 and 6) were kept interested. They both said they enjoyed the book when I finished. But as a parent, I'm not sure the book is so much about Easter as it is about God in general. It seems to meander back and forth and never really talks about why we celebrate Easter. The kids loved it though and that is really the point. The gorgeous illustrations kept the kids interested as well and spawned quite a few interesting discussions. The illustrations alone are enough to make me keep the book.
In summery, this book was great. I would give it 4.5 stars. I just felt the title was a bit misleading.

I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.

I vacillated with this rating because there are beautiful, accurate elements to this book, but it's also full of terrible theology, and to me the blatant inaccuracies and half-truths outweigh the few great parts. The pictures are beautiful like all the books in this series, but this book is just a tiny kernel of truth surrounded by pretty fluff.

I appreciated the sentiment behind this book: trying to give kids the big picture idea of Easter. However, it missed the mark for me and my kids. Firstly, the concepts seemed too vague and difficult for my child to grasp. Things like a tree demonstrating 'the root of Jesse' and a river running into an ocean to demonstrate life opening up into Heaven. Secondly, the link from one concept to the next was very choppy and didn't form a continuous whole. I loved the concept, but the execution was lacking. If you want something like this, try the Jesus Storybook Bible (admittedly, it's a kids' Bible, not a picture book). Beautiful illustrations and a sweet family of characters though.

Cute little book I cleaned while at work at the library today. Neat little examples to illustrate the truth about Easter. My only problem with it is that it gives the impression that God only came up with the plan for Jesus to die for our sins after Noah's descendants turned away from Him. I'm not sure if that's what they were going for, but that's how it appeared.

I need this book. I could also see giving this book to all of my friends. What a beautiful book about the gift of Easter.

What I especially appreciate is it doesn't bash things like Easter eggs or the Easter bunny. Rather, the book uses them as examples of how we can see Jesus, how Easter was the Plan all along. What a good reminder for us adults as well

This children's book was absolutely adorable. The story line was sweet. Also, the story added other elements to think about in reference to Easter. The colors and animals were inviting, which made you want to take a trip thru the book. Great Book for the children and adults.

Beautiful illustrations, but much too heavy on religion for me. (Gift from my in-laws for my daughter... doesn’t align with the beliefs of our household.) So take my rating 100% with that in mind. Might be a great book for someone else.

This book goes straight to the heart...
And straight from the heart of a Christian believer of a certain kind.

For instance, author Lisa has Papa Bear tell Little Cub:

"But God is the one who gave us Easter. Easter is part of a bigger story he had in mind for a long, long time."

Clearly, Lisa Tawn Bergren is a very popular and devout author. Yet it startled me a little to read that her fictional character (a talking bear) knew exactly which stories God "had in mind" and expressed certainty, regarding exactly how long that had been going on.

The ending of ths story is certainly beautiful.

You know, Goodreaders, I wouldn't be surprised if many tears of appreciation have been the spiritual "royalty" received by the author of "God Gave Us Easter." The least I can do is to add in FIVE STARS.

I like children's books. I like religious stories. I like talking animals. I like sweet stories with lessons. And although this book mixes all of them together, sorry to say I didn't like it. It is rating is so radically different than the average, but this one just didn't work.

Papa Bear explains to Little Cub all the great things about Easter, all the things Jesus did for us. I guess it was too over the top, and too preachy.

Best reason that God gave us Easter is that we get to be with Him forever. Papa Bear explains the biblical history of Easter to Little Cub in easy to understand snippets as they walk through the forest. Love the soft pastel illustrations but the book seems to be wordy, especially if the complete text is in the board book version.
Love this author’s River of Time YA series.

This book was so sweet and I felt like it had a really great way of teaching kids some pretty deep ideas about Christianity. Get a little choked up every time I read it. Definitely going to buy this!

I enjoyed this Christian Children's book. I received this as part of a gift. I voluntarily chose to review this. I've given this a 5* rating. I really like the way this author explains things to the very young. I'm sure my grandchildren will enjoy this.

I bought this book for 2 of our pre-school grandchildren with the intent to show them there is more to Easter than the Easter 'Bunny' as secular society prefers. This little gem does that with pictures and gentle language geared toward them.

a bit confusing for young readers...spent more time trying to explain facts in the story...than actually reading the book...doesn't actually tell the story of Easter...uses too many references to other biblical events...

I've really loved Bergren's "God Gave Us..." series-- God Gave Us Christmas is one of my all-time favorites. However, I feel like she shyed away from the truth in God Gave Us Easter. It was beautifully told as always, and points to God and His love, but the Cross is left out. 😢 I was disappointed.

This was on the Bestseller list, which is the ONLY reason I borrowed it from the library to read. It is religious for the holiday, although not over the time. I just wish the animals either wore clothes on every page or didn't. The optional clothes wearing bothered me.

This was a book that I enjoyed as a child learning about God and Why easter was so important to me. It was about a journey of a young polar bear and discovering how Easter happened and God's deep love for her. The book overall was so cute and I learned a lot from it.

Lovely illustrations and a pretty good discussion about God's love being the reason for Easter. I adjust some of the explanations as I read aloud, to make them more helpful for my three-year-old son. He loves this book and asks for it over and over.

A beautifully illustrated, heart touching story about a Papa Bear telling his son about the importance of Easter and how God gave it to us. Such a powerful Christian story that the kids and I loved. I highly recommend this book to kids of all ages especially during the Easter Bunny season.

I think this book is great. The author did a very good job of explaining Easter to Little Cub. I like the book because it teaches children the true meaning of Easter, encourages them to live life with joy while looking forward to living with Jesus FOREVER!
