Courtlight #8

Sworn To Sovereignty

Rate this book
Ciardis Weathervane has one simple rule – win the first fight, then move on to the next. But she’s finding out that the citizens of Sandrin have other plans in mind.

When she returns to the imperial capital city, she finds that nothing is as she left it. Only a week has passed and yet chaos reins. Vana Cloudbreaker has been attacked and surprisingly, she did not come out on top.

The woman Ciardis thought was invincible stands a broken shell of what she once was and Ciardis isn’t entirely sure what or who was the cause of the fabled assassin’s derailment.

To top it off, the revolutionary party is determined to make itself known, starting with a call for an impostor emperor to vacate his throne. They couldn’t have chosen a worse time to start their revolution. Right when the noble societies at court are ready to throw their support to the prince heir and princess heir-in-waiting against the blutgott itself.

Now revolutionaries and courtiers are at odds, but even stranger—the duchess of Carne stands among the revolutionary guard. Ciardis is faced with the predicament of saving an empire and sacrificing a revolution, all while facing down a clock that has run out of the time.

The gods are here and there’s nothing that she nor anyone else can do to stop them.

The more I think about this- the more I realize that this series has really lost something.

This book, although better than book 7 (which is not saying much because book 7 was poor), still is disappointing. You can see the author trying to get back to where she was before- but it just did not happen.

Ciardis and Sebastian felt more like Ciardis and Sebastian. Good.
And there were so many plot twists- which is one of Terah Edun's greatest strengths- But...
It was almost too much at some points.
There were so many changes I almost had whiplash keeping up.
She would spend awhile working on one plot angle- and then it would be gone or reversed instantly- and I would be like- wait- was everything that happened there kind of a waste of time?
I also wish a few elements had been fleshed out or explained a little more- instead of the whole "memory" section in the middle which could have maybe been condensed into one scene.
I wanted to know more about what happened to Vana
I still want to see more about Thanar- who he really is- his past. (He is such a great character but he still is underdeveloped). At this point, without the love triangle- there is almost no point to having him in the story.
I wanted to see more of the Rebellion- they were there but they really weren't.
There were several scenes between Ciaridis and another character- you would get a few sentences of some depth where it seemed like they would continue as a meaningful conversation- and then all of a sudden the conversation was over.
And I personally just do not like Sebastian and Thanar as friends.

There were many good plot elements and ideas by the author here- but she did not give them enough chance for the reader to get really into them- before she would abruptly change gears.

This book is still greatly lacking the depth that she had acquired as an author as she was writing Courtlight 4 and 6.

I received this book from Terah Edun for an honest review. Plus I preordered it from Barnes and Noble. Terah Edun is one of my favorite authors and she never disappoints me with her work.

You will not want to put the book down at all. So make sure you have time to read it all in one setting. Terah doesn't fail to amazed me with her latest installment of the Courtlight series. Many things happen in this book that bring certain plots to light. There are some unique twists that happen you won't see coming.

Ciardis is able to work out certain feelings with her guys in this book and her guys come to an agreement with each other also.

We see different sides of everyone in this book and a couple characters are pronounced dead. Personally I am hoping it isn't true for all of them. However, I am betting it is. Vana isn't the only one to have changes happen to her but they are the most pronounced. Thanar has changed and we learn a bit more about his ties to the bluttgott. We will see one character from Kifar that I had hoped was gone for good. Sebastian has also changed in ways that should help him rule. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not. There is so much that happened in this story that I want to talk about. However, it will give spoilers and no one wants those without actually asking for them.

I am ecstatic that I was given this chance to read the book before it was released. I cannot wait for Sworn to Sovereignty to be released and everyone has a chance to be transported to Algardis while reading. I personally cannot wait until we have the next one. Let's just say Sworn to Sovereignty is a big cliff hanger at the end and you will feel the same.

Man, I hope it is really soon Terah’s next Courtlight book comes out.

All the good people died. Well, half of them. :(

I think this can be officially described as the book where shits hits the fan. For real. We get a lot of serious information thrown at us, and the third major threat emerges. So now we have a god, an impostor emperor, and dragons. As I mentioned the first time I read this, people die, which sucks. Luckily, the end seems to signal retribution is coming. Although, I'm not sure how the group is supposed to deal with the actions of after that. The only good point in all this chaos is that Thanar and Sebastian find a true understanding with Ciardis, which is nice. This was overall a decent installment, but it left me reeling in several places, and the pacing was slightly weird. 4 stars.

Also what did Vana mean in this scene?!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honesty opinion.

Just when you think things are going to start working out for Ciardis and her friends, Terah Edun pulls the rug right out from under your feet! And, she does so within the first five minutes of picking up the book!!!! Honestly, this book has more twists and turns than a roller coaster and is well worth every minute of reading!

Each pivotal event led to another one and before I knew it I had finished the book! Sebastian and Ciardis return home only to realize the revolution is much further along than they thought it would be and Sebastion has to be ready to be a leader. Vana has been broken, but reveals some pretty interesting information to Ciardis. With this information, Ciardis will be able to help both Sebastian and Thanar reach their full potential. Ciardis, Sebastian, and Thanar finally seem to find a way to make their relationship work. One of the least desirable characters from a previous book returns and wreaks some havoc, but this only spurs our heroine and her mates into taking inevitable action.

I cannot wait for Book 9!

Do you ever get the feeling you are reading the book equivalent of "The Empire Strikes Back"? Yeah, this gave me that feeling.

I liked the story - it was rather fascinating to meet see the very villainous Seven and the Duchess again. And the trajectory is interesting, leading to what we know is coming with the war.

But some of it, I just struggled with - that our lead heroine would ...(spoiler hidden)

This one is definitely worth sticking around the series for, just not my favorite of the 8 books so far. I can't wait to see what's coming and how our dear heroine copes with it!

There's only so many times you can retcon a story - specifically by getting back formerly erased memories - before things get out of hand. To say nothing of the absurd number of times characters "purr", "coo", or otherwise speak in a ridiculous manner. And, thirdly, the number of times something is told rather than shown in this book is nearly upsetting. In short, while I tolerated the previous books - even liked some of the middle ones, - this installment almost has me going out and lambasting the author on every social media site I can find. I'll restrain myself to here for now, but, please, for your own health and sanity, consider being drunk while reading.

I am really enjoying this book. The storyline is moving right along and it jogs your memory of the prior books plots with subtle prompts which I like. It is keeping me guessing with where the story is going and so far I haven't guessed right. The characters are fleshed out and true to life and just as spirited as always. I give the book a thumps up and say it is a good addition to the Terah Edun Coutlight collection. Just as a side note and maybe it is my older generation speaking but I do wish that there was better editing. I hate seeing a good writer doing less than their best. Especially when they are influencing young minds.

The amazing Terah Edun had outdone herself on the 8th book of the Coutlight series! The Amazing story line and plot twists will keep you guessing at what is going to happen next. I was on the edge of my seat and holding my breath at some points and in tears at others. I enjoyed every moment of this book and cannot wait for the next one!!

Yeah, I loved reading this book! It was such a great sequel, lots going on, with the rebellion, and the Emperor, and yeah, that was a very big ending, and I just want to know what's going to happen next!

Finally they take control of their future.

Ciardis and company have been sent to the ends of the empire on missions designed for them to fail or die. When they return to the capital, a rebellion against the pretending Emperor has formed which is waiting for the Prince Heir-in-Waiting's leadership.
This story full of surprises and unexpected twists and turns. The writing is solid and the characters have many layers of personality.

Not bad...

At times, the author's writing was trite and predictable. It often felt like I was reading a tv soap opera script. However, as with all the other books in the series, it was a quick read and mildly enjoyable. If you're already invested in the series, you won't be disappointed.

I was given an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

This is book 8 in the Courtlight series and there's no let up in the story, you're thrown straight back into the thick of the action with Ciardis, Sebastian, Thanar and their associates. There's also no let up in the action, it's all happening fast and don't blink because you might miss something.

It's good to see Ciardis standing up for herself, but I am first to admit I'm not the biggest fan of love triangles and I just want her to choose already. I'm trying hard here not to post spoilers but it's difficult as so much goes on, it's just a shame so much happens 'off screen' as it were and sometimes I struggled to pick up what exactly was going on.

With everyone finally back in the city, things are happening and that cliffhanger ending is a doozy. I really, really can't wait for the next to see how they get out of this.

Finished book 8

This series MUST be read in order.....this series is not a stand alone.....from the very first book the story builds. Each book ends in a major cliff hanger and the next book picks up at the point the last book ended or a few moments later. The hardest part is waiting for the next book. The spelling and grammar errors are getting less so that also helps.

This book is amazing. A lot of action, suspense, and intrigue. Terah did not disappoint. Quite frankly, this is probably the best book so far. I am desperate to read the next book. I can't wait to see how Sebastian, Thanar, and Cardias' relationship progresses! I couldn't put this book down!

A lot of typos in this one, and have to admit that the fact that it's taking so long to get to the main plot points in this saga is beginning to wear thin; but there's still something about Ciardis that I can't look away from. I have to know what ultimately happens.
