Ebben a könyvben C. G. Jung úttörő pszichológiájának alapvetéseit foglalja össze, tekinti át Jolande Jacobi, a tanítvány és hosszú évekig közeli munkatárs.
Jolande Jacobi was a Swiss psychologist, best remembered for her work with Carl Jung and her writings on Jungian psychology. She was born in Budapest, Hungary as Jolande Szekacs, but became known as Jolande Jacobi after her marriage at the age of nineteen to Andor Jacobi. She spent part of her life in Budapest, part in Zurich and part in Vienna. Her parents were Jewish, but Jacobi converted to Roman Catholicism later in life. Jacobi met Jung in 1927, and later was influential in the establishment of the C.G. Jung Institute for Analytical Psychology in Zurich in 1948. Her students at the C.G. Jung Institute included Wallace Clift. She died in Zurich.
This is an introduction and overview of C.G. Jung's psychological theories. It's a short book, just 152 pages of text, and Jacobi covers Jung's basic concepts. Though I briefly studied Jung's ideas in college, it was a long time ago and I remembered just enough to confuse myself.
Jacobi's writing is clear, and the book is well-organized. But it's a dense book -- not because of the writing, but because of the ideas. Jung constructed his psychology over a period of 50 years, so there's a lot to it. I would read a few pages at a time and then think about them. I frequently reread passages to make sure I understood them. There are extensive notes, a brief biography of Jung, and a comprehensive bibliography of all Jung's published articles and books. Jacobi worked with Jung for many years, and she has a commanding grasp of his psychology.
There are a number of terms that Jung uses that have specific meanings, such as "archetype," "psyche," and "unconscious." But many of these terms have quite different meanings in our contemporary culture. I think making a list of each term with its brief Jungian definition would have saved me some re-reading, because I could have referred to it as I read. Jung is concerned with understanding the nature and structure of the human psyche: both our conscious and unconscious nature. He starts by trying to understand the individual and ends with attempting to understand all of human nature. It's a systematic and valuable way to define, evaluate, and integrate one's psyche.
I enjoyed the drawings and paintings made by some of Jung's patients. These artworks -- “pictures from the unconscious” Jung called them – are visual representations of Jung's ideas as applied to his patients. I found them fascinating, as well as useful. Jacobi also used simple graphics and diagrams to demonstrate some of Jung’s concepts; those were very helpful.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about Jung's ideas and wants to know more about them. It’s a good introduction to his psychology.
An excellent and readable book about Carl Jung's analytical psychology, with a Forward by Carl Gustave Jung. I found it very helpful and informative. I do recommend it, especially, if you are new to Jung's sophisticated ideas and concepts.
My girl Jolande gives a dry, drawn, and concise account of Jung's main teachings. Not an ounce of humor and no time for bullshit. While she refers to Jung's men colleagues by their respective professions, such as "director", "translator" or "editor", she refers to all of Jung's women colleagues as "his devoted employees and pupils". From her narrative voice, you can tell that she was also proudly undertaking the role of the devoted pupil in this book, and maybe all her life. I imagine Jolande to have been a stern, loyal woman. I read she was a child bride at 19 and took her husband's name and religion. She advocated for ethical relationships between analysts and patients and demanded that Hillman, an analyst who had violated boundaries with a patient, be held accountable for his actions, thus pioneering a change in ethical regulations in her institute in Zürich. Her knowledge of the field comes through rigorously in this book, and I trust that she has given us all the main information we need on the foundations of Jung's teachings. In fact, I trust Jolande with my life. The book reads like a dry textbook, but that is how it was intended by God and Jolande. Also, there are pictures in the book, which is cool.
Right after writing this, I went on to read some very sexist ideas in this book by Jolande. Uh-oh! Turns out Jolande did have some time for bullshit! I do not know if these ideas should be attributed to Jung or to Jolande, because it is not clear if she is interpreting or summarizing them. The book presents a citation by Jung that was critical of the patriarchy, which positively surprised me. He says that in Western society, we are incorrectly used to considering "manly" characteristics (such as rationality) as good and "womanly" characteristics (such as emotionality) as bad, thus leading to both men and women suppressing their "womanly" characteristics, which is unhealthy for the psyche. I understood this to mean that we have incorrectly labeled some virtues (like, intellect) as "manly" and other virtues (like, being in touch with emotions) as "womanly", and this division is wrong: there are no gendered characteristics and they all flow together in all people, only we are taught to suppress some of them, based on how we were socialized. Jolande went on to say, that women do not value their "womanly" characteristics anymore and only place value on their "manly" characteristics, that is why nowadays (meaning: in the 1940s) women are trying to get access to contraception and are not respecting their household duties (because of the available modern technologies). Jolande, that's bullshit! If that is only Jolande's interpretation (she might be repeating Jung's teachings, it's not clear), then I think that a potentially progressive, patriarchy-critical thought was twisted into a very misogynistic interpretation. I have read that feminist scholars agree with the fundamentals of Jung's research but are very critical of his sexist formulations and interpretations, and I have gotten a taste of that now. I can clearly see that he created categories and formulations that could mean something either progressive and healthy, or misogynistic and twisted. I have read women's work who interpret Jung's work in a very interesting, feminist way (e.g., Dr. Clarisa Pinkola Estes), as well as men's work, who use Jung's teachings to say very queerphobic, misogynistic things (e.g., Jordan Peterson). I would like to read more of Jung to understand what exactly he says on these matters, for now, I only have Jolande's words. At first, she raised my hopes by criticising "our paternal society", then she smashed all my hopes into pulp by saying that "an increase in intellectual abilities in women" is making them defy their female nature. I feel for Jolande because being a Jewish child-bride in a world that was on the brink of the Second World War must not have been easy for her. I am sure the misogyny and sexism she lived through must have made her internalize some unhealthy beliefs. Nevertheless, Jolande, that was some bullshit you said there.
Coming to terms with your own psyche is a superpower. Everything I do, think, say, dream and hope is intrinsically connected to my subconscious. As I read this book this started to become clearer and clearer and it made me think of HOW and WHY I do the things I do. It can be so rewarding to learn about your the origin of your thought patterns and behaviours, because it is the only way to really make a difference.
This book is in not a guide to finding yourself, or as Jung calls it 'Individuation'. It is a short, straight to the point summary of all of Jung's most important work. It scratches the surface of some essential psycho-analytic research that (to me) emphasises how important it is to be one with your mind and all the layers that the psyche consists of. Nowadays people are too rational and out of touch with spirituality and the power of the mind, leading to people acting only on what seems normal to them, and what society expects of them. I'm in no shape, way or form better than the next guy, and I hate playing the 'people are sheep' card, but I find it fascinating how little value we as a society place upon the importance of understanding oneself.
I love how Jung is not scared to bring up topics like religion, folklore and myth, dreams and synchronicity, and how he signifies the importance of these often misunderstood and overly rationalised ideas. The universe works in strange ways and Jung's analysis on what we could call 'supernatural', make a lot of sense when we see them in the context of the law of energy conservation, and how everything in the universe is deeply connected with all that's around us.
This is an eye opening read and I can't wait to get deeper into Jung's work! :)
This book goes a step further than Freud in the aspect that ritual is embedded deep within the human soul that derives from the primal evolution of man. The rituals of the past show up in specs of nuances from the common knowledge of religions, philosophies, feelings, and understandings. For example, the 'Hero' effect in which all of us has experienced at one point in our lives that derives from the unconscious place of the powerful inner driving force of the soul or the libido (the soul's driving force).
Jung goes on to explain that the unconscious reveals itself through the symbolism of the ancient objects. Some are considered to be phallic, some are considered to be the nurturer or the Mother. There is astounding correlation of evidence that he presents that seems to back up the theory.
This book is a must read for it is one of the foundations of psycho-analysis.
I cannot lie, this text felt pretty great. However, I know absolutely nothing about Jung, and therefore cannot say if what I have learned is actually reflective of Jungian Psychology. Below is what I got:
Jacobi touches on the Jungian picture of the Psyche, separated into the collective unconscious personal unconscious, conscious, and then the ego. This forms as the foundation on which the rest of the text will be built. She explains the role of Archetypes, Dreams and Symbols, as well as how those things combine into the practical treatment of Complexed and other neuroticisms. All very fascinating. Most importantly, in my opinion, Jacobi offers an extensive explanation of Jung's idea of the Self and the process of Individuation which leads to Self-Realization. The substance of the text concludes with the significance of Mandalas, Alchemy, Yoga, and other forms of mysticism, and how these things play back into all the previous concepts enumerated. Fun stuff, honestly, the beginning was a drag but is absolutely crucial to understanding the latter portions of the text. The brief biography of Jung, which comprised the last few pages, was definitely welcome and interesting. I did notice a parallel between Jung's description of how we interact with the Self and Nagel's argument against the material reduction of consciousness. I'll be shocked if Nagel was not inspired, at least in part, by Jung.
TLDR: Good book. Lots of thoughts that made sense.

I'm more interested in reading C. G. Jung's books after reading this title. Has a lot of information about dreams and religion and the unconscious meaning they contain.
This book serves as a quick summary and introduction to the works of Carl Gustav Jung, the founder of analytical psychology. The first part of the book covers the essence and structure of the psyche (Jung's substantial terms as individual unconscious, collective unconscious, persona and archetypes are introduced, as well as the functions of the conscience on which the famous Myers-Briggs personality test is based). This part was concise, satisfyingly thorough and appropriate for every reader. Second part covers libido and difference between progression and regression - also interesting and useful. Now, I had the biggest issue with the last part of the book - the one which covers the interpretation of dreams, types of neurosis, process of individuation, shadow of self (Animus and Anima) and symbolism in general. With a bit of stretch I could fathom the interpretation of dreams, but the part of our shadow self, which is for men shown as repressed female side (Anima), and for women vice versa (Animus) - was really outdated, and something that the current feminist/liberal/LGBT collective school and state of mind would definitely frown upon :) The separation is just too rigid and supposes the distinct difference between genders, which is to-day usually seen from a perspective of a spectrum. Therefore, the entire part (which is rather long and thorough I might add) was really irrelevant and outdated. Also, the symbolism which finds root in Jung's penchant for alchemy, and with which Jung tried to encompass the experiences of humans around the planet, just seems stretched out and too religious-like and spiritual for a purported science-based approach. All in all, I think the book deserves 4 stars if I were to rate the appropriate introduction to Jung's work, but the latter part of the book really weighed down on me and I almost quit reading the book altogether, therefore I had to go with 3 stars.
I actually did not read this book, but a similar one which I couldn't find in here. It was called The Two Centers of the Psyche by Pritmann McGeehe. It was actually a five hours long lecture and I wanted to pay tribute to that and add some of the things I learnt from that here in this section...for myself to remember.
self and Self are the two major parts of our being. The small 's' is commonly named as ego that gets its energy for the outside and assigns life energy to itself. It tries it all might to protect its identity and does that quite effectively. So much so that we consider our ego as out complete being. The big 'S' is the greater self that is the unconscious energy that is greater than us and dwells in the mystical realm, living in the 'corrupted' realm of spirituality.
McGeehe is religious, unlike any religious person I know or have read. He is absolutely humble and humorous. My favourite two 'h'. He sees his religion as a method for mysticism and not as a systemic method to 'become' like Jesus.
- Types of consciousness - Dream interpretation - What is Individuation - Anima Animus - Soul image
"Every man carries his Eve in himself"
"Identification would mean that one lived out his bestial impulses without restraint, running away, that one has repressed. What is demanded here, however, is something quite different, namely to make them conscious and recognize their reality, whereupon they automatically lose their dangerousness - "for flight from the unconscious would render the goal of the procedure illusory. One must stay with it and the process begun by self observation must be lived through in all its developments and joined onto consciousness with as much understanding as possible."
~ I think the above statement clarifies what letting go or dis identification from thoughts mean, especially those that bother us the most. Don't react or fall for your primal instinctual actions or you would end up identifying with something that is not your true nature and be ever lost.
I really enjoyed this clear, sharp and soulful delivery of Jung's ideas and reflections.
I credit Jacobi as an excellent transmittor and credit Jung for his brilliance and erudtion.
This book has been the best so far in my studies on analytical psychology and I'm sure to refer back to it moving forward.
I loved how this book felt loving and whole to me. It felt like guidance on the path to becoming more whole, while at the same time shining a clear light on what otherwise could be hard-to-grasp concepts.
I found the chapter progression excellent and I loved/appeciated the scholarly, empirical/scientific statements that "more cannot be said about it" (unless experienced or moving into the esoteric).
This book is a great read in English, as opposed to what I hear from my classmates, who struggle through it in Dutch.
Translation is too long to be saved
A explicação é detalhada e bastante específica.
Good, albeit dated introduction to the Jung’s theories and practical applications of said theories. Jacobi’s writing style can be bland at times, however the profundity of Jung’s thought along with extremely helpful illustrations of key concepts makes the book rather accessible and a bit of a fun read.
Good overview of Jung's main ideas, one that would allow you to see if you should read more about it. However, a tad bit too complex for a lay person completely unfamiliar with Jung's work or with psychology in general.
