Having made a name for himself by taking the mantle in Pakistan's mountaineering community, Mustansar Hussain is widely recognized as one of the most well known personalities in Pakistan. Though the origin of his fame is usually considered to be his established and decorated career as a writer, Tarar can also be recognized as the foremost endorser for tourism projects in Northern Areas of Pakistan, having exorbitantly increased the array of tourist exposure to the areas by becoming both a mountaineer and an adventure author who uses these locations as backdrops for his storylines.
Mustansar Hussain's literary proficiency as an author often overshadows the fact that he has been an active mountaineer for a very extensive period of time. Having embarked upon several painstaking and challenging tasks such as the ascension of K-2 and the surpassing of the treacherous "Chitti Buoi" Glacier among others. More significantly, both of Mustansar Hussain's professions often intertwine and relate, since he uses his experiences on his expeditions as travelogues. Though some of his publications have met lukewarm reactions due to supposed exaggeration, he reflects on this predicament with the notion that "words or even pictures cannot successfully express the beauty and splendour of nature in it's true spirit."
Tarar's first book Nikley Teri Talash Main, a travelogue of Europe, was published in 1971. He has so far over forty titles to his credit which include many genres of literature; travelogues, novels, short stories and collection of his newspaper columns and television dramas. He has been one of the best-seller fiction writer of Pakistan.
Mustansar was born in 'Jokalian' a small town in Punjab, Pakistan in March 1939. He spent his early childhood in the village and moved to culturally rich Lahore, witnessed the independence of Pakistan in 1947 and the events that took place at Lahore. His father Rehmat Khan Tarar opened a small seed store there. Mr Tarar got his schooling from Rang Mehal Mission High School and Muslim Model High School, Lahore. He then got admission in Government College Lahore , a college that owns the credit to polish several intellectuals of Pakistan. In 1950's, he went to London for higher studies. In 1957 he attended the World Youth Festival in Moscow and wrote a book named 'Fakhta' (Dove) on that experience. In 1971 his first travelogue Nikley Teri Talaash Main was published. It led to new trend in Urdu literature. He also became a television actor and from 1988 was for many years a host of PTV's live morning transmission Subuh Bakhair (Good Morning). His unconventional and down to earth style of comparing earned him great popularity. He called himself the 'Cha Cha Jee' of all Pakistani children and soon became known by this title.

تارڑ صاحب کا ناول جپسی مجھے اچھا لگا، شاید اس لئے کہ مجھے کافی دن بعد فکشن پڑھنے کا اتفاق ہوا۔
ناول کا شروع کا حصہ پڑھ کر مجھ جیسے کولہو کے بیل کو اپنے شب و روز میں مقید ہونے کا کافی قلق ہوا۔ اور یہ خیال جاگا کہ کچھ نہ کچھ سیاحتی سرگرمیاں زندگی میں ہونی چاہیے۔ تاہم بہت جلد ہی ہم سنبھل گئے اور قفس کو پھر سے آشیاں سمجھنے کی کوشش کرنے لگے۔
اصلی ناول کافی دیر بعد شروع ہوا۔ یعنی ناول بھی اپنے مرکزی کردار کی طرح کچھ آوارہ گرد ثابت ہوا۔ جپسی کی محبت خانہ بدوشوں کی سی تھی۔ سادہ اور الہڑ ۔ اور کچھ اکھڑ بھی۔ جیسے خانہ بدوشوں کے ہاں سفر اور قیام کچھ بھی مستقل نہیں ہوتا۔ بعینہ و ہی حال یہاں بھی تھا۔
یوں تو ناول میں ایسی کوئی بات نہیں ہے کہ انسان عش عش کر اُٹھے لیکن وقت گزاری کے لئے اور اپنے شب و روز سے کٹنے کے لئے یہ ایک اچھا ناول ہے۔
پسِ نوشت: ویسے جپسی سے مجھے طارق عزیز یاد آتے ہیں جو اپنے مشہورِ زمانہ پروگرام میں جپسی امیزنگ کریم کی تشہیر اپنے مخصوص انداز میں کیا کرتے تھے۔

It's an okay novel. At times, I felt I was reading a travelogue, not a novel. Dare I say, it's the weakest novel of MHT from literary standpoint. After reading his other novels, like Bahao, Rakh, Khas-o-Khashak Zamany, Aay Ghazal-e-Shab, Dakeya aur Jolaha, you might say reading this novel is an utter waste of time. This novel lacks ambiguity, and this is a con.

Gypsy and gypsy's inspiration appear again and again in many books of Tarrar, most recently in full force in Ae-Ghazal-e-Shab. After reading this book, I finally know who Gypsy is.

تارڑ صاحب کا یہ تیسرا ناول ہے جسے پڑھنے کا مجھے اتفاق ہوا ہے. اس ناول کی تھیم اور طرزِ تحریر "پیار کا پہلا شہر" سے ملتا جلتا ہے مگر اسکو پڑھنے کے بعد محسوسات بالکل الگ ہیں.
ناول کا پہلا حصہ قدرے بوریت کا احساس لیے ہوئے ہے جس کی دو وجوہات ہیں. ایک تو یہ کہ اس میں ایک کہانی سے زیادہ سفرنامے کا تاثر ملتا ہے. دوم یہ کہ کچھ تفصیلات ایسی ہیں جنہیں بہت زیادہ طول دیا گیا ہے.
جپسی جو کہ دو مرکزی کرداروں میں سی ایک ہے، کی آمد کے بعد کہانی میں ربط اور روانی کی ایک کیفیت پیدا ہو جاتی ہے.
کہانی کا مرکزی خیال یوں تو "محبت" ہے مگر یہ روایتی رومانوی محبت نہیں بلکہ ایک پیچیدہ احساس کی ترجمان محبت ہے جسی مزید پیچیدگی سے کہانی کی شکل میں ڈھالا گیا ہے.
اس محبت کو، جسے تارڑ صاحب نے بیان کیا ہے، کئی ناموں سے پکارا جا سکتا ہے. یہ obsession بھی ہے اور جوان عمر کا تقاضا بھی کیونکہ اس میں ٹھہراؤ نہیں. لیکن اسکی validity پر سوال بھی نہیں اٹھایا جا سکتا کیونکہ یہ پائیدار ہے اور اس میں گہرائی بھی ہے. جپسی ان جوان اور ان چھوئے جذبات کی علمبردار ہے جو کہ ہر شخص کے دل میں موجزن ہوتے ہیں لیکن وہ انہیں معاشرے کے خوف یا ٹھہراؤ اور سکون کے لالچ میں اپنے اندر دبائے رکھتا ہے. یہ وہ جذبات ہیں جو اس انسان کو تا دیر جوان رکھتے ہیں.
ایک پہلو جو کہ تارڑ صاحب کے باقاعدہ قاری اور مداح ہی محسوس کر سکتے ہی، اور وہ ہے مرکزی خیال اور خود تارڑ صاحب کے درمیان مماثلت. اس مماثلت کے باعث، نقش خیال کی انفرادیت کے باوجود کہانی میں گہرائی محسوس نہیں ہوتی اور دلچسپی کم ہوتی جاتی ہے. بالخصوص تب، جبکہ آپ اس سے قبل "قربت مرگ میں محبت" جیسا کمال کا ناول پڑھ چکے ہوں.
مجموعی طور پر تھیم کی حد تک ناول خود میں کشش رکھتا ہے، مگر میری رائے میں اسے تارڑ صاحب کے عمدہ ترین کتب میں سے ایک قرار نہیں دیا جا سکتا.

A beautifully crafted novel , simple and interesting narration ,lovely tale of romance and emotions, writer keeps grip over the readers heart and makes him journey along with him. A marvellous novel.

کسی مشہور کتاب کا مطالعہ محض اس وجہ سے بھی ضروری ہوتا ہے کہ وہ ایک معروف مصنف کی تحریر ہے۔ حال ہی میں مجھے مستنصر حسین تارڑ کا ایک اور ناول "جپسی" پڑھنے کا موقع ملا۔ اس کتاب کا طرز تحریر ان کے مشہور ناول "پیار کا پہلا شہر" سے مشابہ ہے۔ ناول کا نام ایک یورپی کردار کے حوالے سے رکھا گیا ہے، جس کی دادی خانہ بدوش تھیں اور اسی نسبت سے اسے جپسی کہا جاتا تھا، حالانکہ اس کا اصل نام کچھ اور تھا۔
کہانی کا مرکزی کردار ایک سیاح ہے، جو انگلینڈ سے سوئٹزرلینڈ کی سیر کے لیے نکلا ہوا ہے اور اپنی رہائش کے لیے سفری خیمے کا استعمال کرتا ہے۔ وہ ایک شہر سے دوسرے شہر تک لفٹ کے ذریعے سفر کرتا ہے، اور اس دوران مختلف لوگوں سے ملتا ہے اور نت نئی جگہوں کا مشاہدہ کرتا ہے۔ اس طرح کہانی کا پہلا نصف حصہ سفرنامے یا آپ بیتی کی مانند لگتا ہے، جو شاید کچھ قارئین کو بوریت کا احساس دے، لیکن مجھے دلچسپ لگا کیونکہ میں نے اب تک تارڑ صاحب کا کوئی سفرنامہ نہیں پڑھا تھا۔ اس ناول کے دوران ہی مجھے پتہ چلا کہ یہ تارڑ صاحب کے سفرنامے "خانہ بدوش" کے باب کا تسلسُل ہے۔
جپسی کا کردار تقریباً ناول کے وسط میں متعارف ہوتا ہے۔ وہ ایک کیمپنگ سائٹ پر سیاح سے ملتی ہے، جہاں وہ ایک کیفے میں کام کرتی ہے۔ جپسی پاکستانی سیاح کو دیکھتے ہی اس کی محبت میں گرفتار ہو جاتی ہے۔ محبت کا انجام تو ناول پڑھ کر ہی معلوم ہوگا، لیکن تارڑ صاحب نے ناول کے آخری صفحے پر ہی جیسے خلاصہ یا ناول لکھنے کا مقصد پیش کر دیا ہے، جس میں وہ کہتے ہیں:
"ہم نے بیک وقت ایک دوسرے کے ساتھ محبت نہیں کی۔ کی لیکن الگ الگ کی۔۔جب ہم نہر کے کنارے پہلی بار آئے تو میں تمہیں دیکھتی ہی جاتی تھی اور تم نہیں دیکھتے تھے۔۔اور پھر پاکستان میں مجھے کچھ ہوگیا اور تم میری قربت کے خواہش مند تھے۔۔اور اب ایک مرتبہ پھر میں نے تمہیں پہچان لیا ہے۔لیکن تم دور ہو رہے ہو۔۔یہ کیا ہے؟ ہم ایک دوسرے کے ساتھ الگ الگ محبت کیوں کرتے رہے ہیں ایک ہی وقت میں کیوں ایسا نہیں ہوا؟
ایک ہی وقت کے لیے یہ جذبے اتنے شدید تھے کہ ہم شاید انہیں برداشت نہ کر سکتے۔ان کا الگ الگ اور مختلف وقتوں میں ہونا ہی ہمارے لیے بہتر تھا“
کہانی سادہ اور بغیر کسی پیچیدگی کے ہے، جس کی وجہ سے یہ ایک سفرنامے یا آپ بیتی کا سا تاثر دیتی ہے۔ مرکزی کردار کی شخصیت تارڑ صاحب سے کافی مشابہت رکھتی ہے، یوں لگتا ہے جیسے وہ اپنی زندگی کے ایک باب کو قارئین کے سامنے کھول رہے ہیں۔ سوئٹزرلینڈ کی خوبصورتی، برفیلی ہوائیں اور پھولوں کی خوشبو تارڑ صاحب نے اس قدر دلکش انداز میں بیان کی ہے کہ قاری اس کا احساس اپنے کمرے میں بھی کرتا ہے۔ جپسی کے کردار کی حساسیت کو بھی بہت عمدگی سے پیش کیا گیا ہے۔ اکثر پاکستانی مصنفین مغربی کرداروں کو اخلاقی طور پر پست دکھاتے ہیں، لیکن تارڑ صاحب نے انہیں عام انسانوں کی طرح دکھایا ہے، جن کی اپنی خواہشات، خوف اور چھوٹی چھوٹی خوشیاں ہیں۔

An intense story of love that became immortal. Slow in the beginning but takes you in full grip as the story progresses. The writer eventually makes u fall in love again and you want to retain that intense feeling for a longer time.

When I was reading this novel this led me towards boredom initially . This is a travlouge of a young boy where author led reader from one place to another immediately from Switzerland to other places. Basically this novel is playing tantrum of emotions.
In first part of book There is a clear explaination of feelings and behavior of the boy enjoying youth at highet of glory.
The novel plays dual sides of amative and eagerness simultaneously. Unlike other books of MHT this book is not distinctive writing it is a fine read to kill your time.
While in the second part there was about gypsy. This was the point where the story has begun. Gypsy is a servebt at food restaurant. A girl who fell in love with a Pakistani boy at first sight and gets determined to infuse him love. At that time, she failed and they both moved on in their lives.
At the mean time one have feeling and latter no feeling for each other. This book is an avarege read for me. I think I have read far better then these by the same author.

The novel plays dual sides of amative and eagerness simultaneously. Unlike other books of MHT this book is not distinctive writing it is a fine read to kill your time.
While in the second part there was about gypsy. This was the point where the story has begun. Gypsy is a servebt at food restaurant. A girl who fell in love with a Pakistani boy at first sight and gets determined to infuse him love. At that time, she failed and they both moved on in their lives.
At the mean time one have feeling and latter no feeling for each other. This book is an avarege read for me. I think I have read far better then these by the same author.

Generically, this is a novel but reads like a travelogue. The story whirls between some cities of Europe and in one city, our protagonist meets Gypsy. She is a clerk at a hotel but something holds them together as their gaze interlock. Later that night, their a bonfire where they meet and thus starts an odyssey of lovers that transgress the rational mind.
This is a story of infatuation perhaps even madness in a foreign land. The way MHT writes is marvelous. His words writhes and swirls and create vivid images that lurks for quite some time in the reader's mind.

Gypsy is one of the best novel, i ever read, though it appears itself as a travelogue but the amalgam of both the fiction and travelogue is what makes it very attractive. It's goof though, at the end the curiosity of it's future ends. It's good in it's present.

On can easily fall in love with Gypsy. Relationships, sometimes can never fall into brackets of worldly categories.
