The Debt

Rate this book
The older woman came over to her immediately, pulling her hand so that Henrietta had to step into the centre of the room. The girl guessed immediately that this was the matron that her aunt had so carefully described - a dedicated card player, and unable to recover her debts. She didn’t look pressed for money, but perhaps card debts were something that the matron didn’t want to discuss with her husband.
As soon as she stepped into the middle of the room, she forgot the sordid reasons why she was here. The young people immediately crowded around her, looking her up and down as though she was a performing horse. Henrietta half expected one to reach forward and examine her teeth, or look in her ears.
