“If ISIS needed a doctor, they would take one. Just because she is American does not make her immune to the terror that runs through this country.”
How does one return from a nightmare unscathed? Dr. Clair Stevens, a newlywed pediatrician, has to come to terms with that question when she is suddenly and violently kidnapped while volunteering in Syria. Surrounded by violence and horror, she must find solace in even the smallest acts of kindness—but not even these are without peril, and soon she must reckon with the unthinkable when she begins to develop feelings for her captor.
Clair is only just learning how to survive when she is finally rescued and brought back to her loving husband. But when it seems that a normal life is once again within her grasp, she learns a truth that, if revealed, could undo everything she’s started to rebuild. The thrilling debut novel by Judith Keller, "Returned Broken" tells an unforgettable story of one woman’s battle with trauma, forgiveness, and self-discovery as she is thrust into a nightmare that refuses to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It held your attention from the first chapter to the last page. I hope there is a sequel to this book to see what happens to Clair and David and their family.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Claire, a newlywed pediatrician is volunteering in Syria and is kidnapped by ISIS. How does one return to a normal life after living a nightmare in captivity after many months? Clare's husband, David also struggles with the changes in his wife when she returns. The characters in this book are well-developed and the story was captivating. I was invested in this story from the beginning to the end. I would highly recommend ! I look forward to reading more from Judith Keller.

I really enjoyed Returned Broken. It was a story that kept me on the edge of my seat at all times and I kept wanting to read it and find out what was going to happen. I was very invested in all the characters and the story in general - I loved Clair and her drive to fight and keep being positive, especially.
I hope that this becomes a series because I would definitely read it to find out what happens to David, Clair and the rest of their family!
I was very close to DNFing this book because of the development of the Stockholm Syndrome-esque subplot. It is nicely written and has good characters... But from personal experience there is a reason why, if you will be doing any kind of relief mission overseas, especially related to medicine you have mandatory induction and training in several supplementary fields, - to prevent the above-mentioned "plots" to develop. Other that that, I am glad I finished it, and I enjoyed the book as a whole quite a bit.
I loved this book. Once I started reading it I was drawn in with the characters. I could see what Clair saw and felt after her abduction. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read! It will appeal to anyone no matter what type of stories the reader prefers.
