Rate this book

World War I is pretty much the perfect setting for the Doctor to take on the Weeping Angels. Of course the angels would be attracted to all of the death here and have little reason to worry about being found out. The characterization of the Tenth Doctor is spot on. I like the new companion created for this series. She's too young for the Doctor so for once we have a companion who's not in love with him. Daniel Indro's art is fantastic. Typically the art for a Doctor Who book is pretty spotty.

Liked seeing a story with the Weeping Angels. Weeping Angels are quite scary. Glad Gabby is going on lots of adventures.

Apparently all it took for me to enjoy the Tenth Doctor ongoing was for the entire creative team to change. Whoops?

Robbie Morrison's first four issues of the title are the titular Weeping Angels Of Mons, which find Gabby and the Doctor embroiled in World War One while Weeping Angels attack them from all sides. I didn't think the Angels would work well in comic form given their unique manner of moving, but it was surprisingly well done, and actually made me jump at least once. I appreciated Morrison remembering exactly how the Angels work as well, rather than just having them kill people.

Both the Doctor and Gabby didn't talk at a mile a minute either, which made what they did say have even more impact. The humanisation of the military personnel was nice too, although wasn't a massive fan of Gabby trying to snog the first hot soldier she saw.

The artwork was solid too, a bit grittier and more solid from Daniel Indro than in the first volume, which fit the subject matter a lot better too.

The final issue is a one-and-done with Gabby heading back to see her parents when an intergalactic Wild Hunt turn up to attack some invisible space whales (sentences you can only write in science fiction). This one's a bit looser in terms of story, as is the artwork from Elena Casagrande, but it's a nice ender to the volume and a bit lighter after the heaviness of the Weeping Angels story.

Much better than the first volume, both in terms of story and artwork. Hopefully the upward streak continues.

The Doctor and his companion Gabby find themselves in the trenches during WW1 at the Battle of Mons, where a group of weeping angels have started hunting soldiers on both sides of the conflict.

This is the first Doctor Who comic that I felt really worked. The weeping angels adapt well to comic form due to being very visual and it helped that they were going for a more sad and frightening tone rather than wacky and funny like the previous comics. Hopefully this is a level of quality the other comics will be able to continue.

Two good stories in this. The first, the WWI-set Weeping Angel story that makes up 80% of the volume, is rock solid, and places the Angels suitably against the aesthetic of gothic European architecture, whilst also playing up the most visceral, actually quite brutal imagery and ideas possible with the monsters, such as with an insane German soldier who has stitched his eyes open to stop him blinking, or two soldiers being sent back in time by an Angel, only to die in a cataclysmic train crash minutes later. This sense of brutality is hammered home by really fantastic, scratchy pencil work by Daniel Indro that makes each and every page feel dirty, hairy and unclean, with a suggestion of a more hypermasculine direction (the Doctor has a six pack for some reason), which is again bolstered by the Doctor’s odd characterisation in the story, shouting, looking angry and vengeful, his figure appearing fuller and wider in the frame than in previous issues. This characterisation feels like a bit of a leap, to put it mildly, and I hope it doesn’t continue in later volumes because it feels antithetical to the character, but I can’t argue that it doesn’t make for a cohesive whole.

On that basis, the second story is definitely the stronger of the two, a small scale breezy invasion story back with Gabby’s family in New York, which acts as a loose vehicle for some incredible pages of artwork as massive blocks of sound, literally visualised on the page as onomatopoeia flood the panels. The way this builds and ultimately climaxes on top of the Empire State Building, with the hulking blocks of BOOMs and VWAAAARRRs swirling around the spire and shooting up into space like zero-gravity alphabetty spaghetti is nothing short of stunning, and shows that the creators behind this series are really considerate of the medium and can really play to its strengths and with its conventions. There are also some funny little aliens in this story so how am I supposed to complain?

Good title (though it set me worrying about whether the Whoniverse has an Arthur Machen), and the story's not bad - though it holds few surprises for anyone familiar with the components (war comics, Weeping Angels, Tennant's Doctor). The big weakness is a mismatch between medium and monster, as when the audios have to handle interminably slow DA-LEK DI-A-LOGUE. The Angels' whole schtick is that they don't move - but in a comic, nothing does. And it's damn hard to maintain the illusion of movement for everyone else while keeping the Angels so fearfully still.
(Though as nothing compared to the troubles the forthcoming Weeping Angels audio will have with a race who horribly diluted the brand as soon as they made a sound)

Okay there's a few points I have to make to explain this book.
1. I was drawn to this book because doctor who + graphic novel = my kinda book.
2. I DID NOT like this book because language + degrading Christianity and God =angry Halee.
3. The story was entertaining (it was set in WWI) but it was not edge-of-my-seat like I was expecting.
4. The pictures/sketches are awesome!! They're super detailed and the color is really vibrant...

So, for a wrap-up.....I would NOT recommend this book. The language was kinda crude and there were a few uses of d***. AND, you just don't dis Christianity dude! I mean, come on! Was that really necessary for the author to add that in? Anyway, it's a shame because I was going to buy this book but now I'm not.

3.0 out of 5 stars

So almost 75% of it felt like a repeat of the weeping angel plot line from the show. The only thing that was new really was the soldiers being from World War One and then the last like 15% being the sonic noise plot line.

Loved the art and Gabby and that it is the tenth Doctor, but not my favorite graphic novel

The Weeping Angels are one of my favourite creatures from Doctor Who. They are statues of angels, which “kill” their victims by sending them back in time so they lose all their loved ones and the life they know. The only way to stop them is to look at them, which means not blinking.

The Weeping Angels target the World War One battlefield in this story because they can “feed” on many people all at once. The story is plausible, since so many people went missing and were never seen again during the war. This graphic novel even shows the lives that some of the soldiers lived after being sent back to the previous century.

I loved this book! The Angels were so creepy. There was a lot of historical significance since it took place during World War One. Gabby, the Doctor’s companion, wasn’t on the TV show, but she’s a great character in the graphic novels. This could also be read as a standalone story, if you haven’t read the first graphic novel in the series.

I love the Doctor Who comics! I highly recommend them for fans of the show!

¡No parpadees!

Gah! I love Doctor Who so much. The story is awesome and the art is so freaking cool. I found this second and fourth volume in Half Price Books, or rather my fiancé did, and I knew I had to have them. Eventually, I will have them all, as they did have a couple from the 11th Doctor, but I had to to with these first as David is my favorite. Hopefully, I will find the first and third soon. If you love Doctor Who, give these graphic novels a go (they do not follow the show btw).

Great second volume of Doctor Who! Universe: The 10th Doctor adventures. It is cool to explore more and meet more characters, settings, universes, etc..

It's fun story to read and can't wait to check out the other volumes from my home local public library.

Really enjoyed this. The weeping Angel's are still the most terrifying villains. Even in cartoon form.

It was funny. It was ridiculous. It was the doctor.

Fun fact before I start: my fiancé and I spotted this comics in the Mons Memorial Museum and were surprised to see it there. That's how he got the idea to gift it to me on my birthday, linking a visit we did together and our love of Doctor Who!

Always glad to get back to the Doctor, mostly under David Tennant's traits - even though, the more I'm watching Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, the more I think he is the best of them, character-wise!

It was a good adventure, I loved the illustrations of the first story - a little bit less those of the second one, but it's a matter of taste here.
Mostly, I was eager to read this one because the Weeping Angels are clearly the scariest creatures in the Doctor Who universe - for the time being, as I have not finished all the seasons - with the Vashta Nerada. Here, there is something more to them:
I discovered the story of the Angels of Mons during the visit I mentionned earlier: it was clever to use this "myth" to create a Doctor Who story! It's also a way to portray the war and its violence and horror.
The only thing that could have bothered me is

I'm glad I started this series: I'll get back to the first volume and then go on!

Nice stories overall, and I'm enjoying the dynamics between Ten and Gabby. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the Weeping Angels at all, and the graphics in the first story are significantly worse than in the previous volume.

My second outing with any of Titan's "Doctor Who" titles and certainly not disappointed...overall. The main story, featuring new classic villains the Weeping Angels, was everything it needed to be. It was suspenseful, it was eerie, it left me frantic to see what happens next. Pace, art, and setting (WWI) were spot on and I found this a very enjoyable read. My only criticisms would be: 1- The final story, a one shot set in NYC again, felt a bit flat and almost an altered duplicate of the first arc which introduced us to Gabby. 2- The writer's European influence showed through a bit much when writing Gabby. A minor nit-pick I know, but I doubt that Gabby (a young 20-something Hispanic girl from modern day New York) has at this point spent enough time with the Doctor or the Scottish soldiers they partner with to refer to an elevator as a "lift" and while maybe that's buy-able, she would not refer to a vacation as "holiday" in her journal. Just saying. However, the minor nit-pick and flat story are more than made up for in a fantastic story involving the Tenth Doctor and the always creepily fun Weeping Angels. A fine read and a must for Whovians and comic fans!

Two nice stories in this second volume, the first and main story involves Weeping Angels and WWI. The second story is a short one off that takes us back to present day, we meet a couple alien races and the issue is resolved almost as soon as it is discovered.

Gabby still isn't really grabbing me as a companion and the artwork remains embarrassingly awful, but its difficult to NOT enjoy a story featuring the Weeping Angels.

Overall, this was an improvement over the last volume and the end of the WWI story might have brought a tear to my eye.
