NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH A COWBOY Jessa Mae Love is done with relationships. No matter how tempting he might be, she cannot--will not--fall for a man like Lance Cortez. The outrageously handsome cowboy is practically a living legend in Colorado, as famous for riding bulls as he is for breaking hearts. What would a big-time rodeo star like him see in a small-town veterinarian who wears glasses, rescues animals, and cries when watching rom-coms? Turns out, plenty. Raising bulls, riding the circuit, and looking after his ailing father--Lance never stands still for long. Yet Jessa catches his attention, and the more she tries to resist him, the more he wants her. When she agrees to move to the ranch to keep an eye on Lance's dad, Jessa tells him they have to keep it professional: no flirting, no sweet talk, and definitely no kissing. But with Jessa now living under his roof, that's easier said than done . . .

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Jessa was just dumped by text and for someone who has such an open heart, she sure has trouble finding someone to love her back. Ever since Lance's mother left without looking back, he's been a love them for one night and leave them. When Lance needs help watching his father, Jessa is there and he's starting to enjoy her at his home more than he should. Jessa loves love, Lance wants to be a loner, and long held family secrets are bubbling under the surface as these two heat up under the Colorado sky.
She might have sworn off relationships, but technically she hadn't sworn off kissing.
I enjoyed how this one started off, we're introduced to the Cortez family of Lance, his younger brothers Lucas, Levi, and their father Luis. With Luis out following the rodeo circuit as a champion bull rider, their mother couldn't handle the stress of raising three boys alone and leaves. As the oldest, Lance feels it is his responsibility to take care of the family but Levi has serious anger issues with his father and ends up burning down a barn. The three boys decide Lucas will take the wrap as his record is squeaky clean but things go sideways when he gets charged as an adult and ends up going to jail. When he finally gets out, he leaves not wanting to deal with the small town always looking at him like he is a criminal, Levi can't stand the guilt and constantly travels on the rodeo circuit, which leaves Lance to run their ranch and work on becoming the best bull rider like his dad. I wish there had been more detail to Lance running the ranch and his bull riding career. They're mentioned but not really done anything with, we get a few glimpses of Lance practicing for World's, championship rodeo in Las Vegas, but I didn't understand how he ran the ranch year round and was such a top bull rider, when would he have time to travel to rodeos?
The Cortez family drama kind of overshadowed Jessa, she grew up spending the summers with her father and school year with her mother, she craved a big stable family. Her father just died and she is trying to take over his animal rescue, Lance's father Luis tries to help her out with it. Like Lance and his ranch and rodeo, there wasn't much to Jessa's animal rescue. We know she needs money to keep it running but other than carting a pig around, it was definitely pushed to the side of her life and the story. Her friendship with two other women, helped to flesh out her character more but they never seemed to have longer, in depth scenes together to endear them to me more than series baiting.
It's a gift when someone believes in you at a time no on else does. When you've lost some of the belief in yourself.
I thought the first half was just a lot of lust attraction making up Jessa and Lance's relationship. Jessa is supposedly on a break from wanting a relationship and Lance is supposed to have this hardened heart but the storyline of Jessa not wanting a relationship seems abandoned almost as soon as she says it. I'm not sure until the very end I felt any depth to Lance's feelings for Jessa. They are thrown together because of circumstance and they never evolved for me beyond “sexy legs” and “hot bod”.
This was an easy quick read, the outline for a deep emotional story was there but the depth and building blocks never showed up. The big ending had me disliking Jessa's character a bit as she acted fairly inconsiderately towards Lance and very blindly towards one of her friends, all because she “knew” she was right; family dynamics are tough waters to wade into and I just didn't think she gave it the consideration it deserved. There was nothing new or exciting to this story but, like I said, the outline is there for deep emotion with the Cortez family trying to heal from the lie they told that fractured the brothers. Details, depth, and fully fleshed out characters were absent in this one, but with two brothers left single, the author has a nice setup for their stories.
This is the first book of the Rocky Mountain Riders series. Jessa is done with men and relationships. She has been engaged several times only to be dumped. Lance is the son of her father's best friend. A cowboy and on the rodeo circuit. Trying to win the World title before retiring like his own dad had done. But the fans and media are calling him a has been and he is out to prove them wrong. Lance's mom had walked out on his dad, him and his brothers when he was a child and they never saw or heard from her again. The boys rebelled and got into all kinds of trouble as kids. Now they are separated by circumstances. Will we ever get to meet them? Jessa rescues animals and has a shelter, it is run down and they need funding. Lance asks Jessa to move into his dad's place while he is training and goes to the World's rodeo championship. But Jessa attracts his attention and she keeps trying to resist him. I loved Lance and his family and how they look out for each other. Also Jessa's 3 friends and how they are there for each other. So I am sure we will be seeing more of them in the series. I received the paperback from Forever to review.
Jessa Mae Love, is in love with Love to bad she keeps getting her heart broken, then their is Lance Cortez his mother left him and his wild fell apart now they come together to help Jessa's friend who happens to be Lance's father but could their be more even with all the secrets and miscommunications surrounding the pair.
I loved this book, I Loved the family and friends dynamic of the book and I really want to read Lucas and Levi's stories next. four and half stars. I took half a star because i just couldn't handle all the miscommunications and how angry Lance would get about the slightest things, he was usually fast to cool off but there was just a tad to much of the back and forth for my taste. still highly recommend and I'll be sure to check out the rest of the books in this series.
I was sent a copy of this book for a back light spot light from forever publishing and Grand Central publishing. but all thoughts are my own.
Hometown Cowboy is such a wonderful book, and I was BLOWN away by how much that I actually enjoyed this book here. It really REALLY shocked me. I don't even know why I haven't even checked out this author before. I blame picking this one up on my library, because it was on one of their feature shelves down their romance section, and boy I decided to just take a chance and grab it up since I have seen so many positive thoughts on this author.
Within the first two pages I was completely hooked on this story, and I couldn't put it down. I started it on my break at work....worked through half the book and finished the rest once I got home. So I read this book in less than a couple of hours, which really only happens if its a PAGE TURNER!! And boy this authors writing is super engaging for the reader.
The heroine is the local vet and trying to carry on her father's legacy and she is looking for love one day. She is just coming out of a bad relationship and not really looking for a relationship but she has the hots for this cowboy and yeah all of her plans to enjoy being single goes out the window pretty quickly. Our hero, is the oldest of the three brothers. He is pretty famous for carrying on his father's tradition of riding bulls and he is a natural at it. But now he mostly just trains his bulls for the job. But he wants one last ride at a competition. We see how at first these two try to avoid the attraction they feel for each other, but soon they realize why deny what they feel. We also have a heroine that has a close relationship to the heroe's father and does so much to bring these brothers back together when they were seperated in a sad way.
I truly adored both of these characters, their personalities just fit right. The heroine is just wonderful, kind and is very giving. Lance, our hero, can be a bit stubborn at times, but I love that Jessa can get through his tough skin and make him see reason. The romance that develops between these two is sexy yet has a sweet tone to it. I really enjoyed this author's writing style, and seeing these two fall for each other in the way that they do. I can hardly wait to try out the rest of the series and seeing more of the brothers.
I downloaded this on a whim, looking for some new sorbet authors.
I really liked Jessa. She's genuinely a good person, loyal, loving and so kind. I truly enjoyed being in her head. Lance is stubborn and stand off ish and maybe a bit cocky and he wears it well. Their UST was off the charts.
The plot was sweet and funny and maybe a bit heartbreaking. Of course there's the angry break up and grand gesture, but it was the epilogue that was the best. And with this great cast of her bffs and his brothers, I'm hoping everyone gets paired off for more books.
Overall, a quick and cute read with a majority satisfying ending. I'll definitely be looking for other books in the series.
**Huge thanks to Forever and NetGalley for providing the arc free of charge**
This was truly an enjoyable read. The story-line was cute and funny and really sweet. Not too high on the angst, but a bit heartbreaking at times. Predictable conflict towards the end (because what romance story doesn't have one of those lol) but not boring or cliche. I thoroughly enjoyed my first read by Sara Richardson!
Hometown Cowboy was an easy introduction into the Rocky Mountain Riders. Sexy cowboy, a heroine who's a dreamer and rescues animals, chocolate, a darling little pig, family struggles and mending broken relationships. Hometown Cowboy was a tempting introduction to the Rocky Mountain Riders.
The gist of it is that Lance is training for a huge rodeo competition and is having trouble concentrating because of worry over his dad. So he comes up with the brilliant idea of having his dad's best friend move in to help keep an eye over him. Thing is? She's decades younger than his dad and while he's gotten rid of the distraction of his daddy? He's not totally distracted by Jessa and all her sexy bits.
I liked these two. Jessa has a kind heart, dreams of romance, love and having a family. She's good people and easy to fall for. And Lance is one sexy cowboy rocking some deeply rooted hurts from his childhood. This was definitely his journey. I felt for him and all of the issues he needed to get past from his early years and with mending family relationships. They had a nice chemistry and fit well even if there were screw ups along the way.
I really liked seeing them both working on their jobs. Him training, her with the animals. And spending time with his dad. It's an interesting friendship her being in her 30s and his daddy 60ish. But they were cute together.
Overall, I enjoyed this one but I did think it was missing something. Mainly the romance. I mean, there's romance, but I got to the epilogue and looked back at the 300 some pages read and was like...huh not much happened. And then the epilogue skips months in the future and over all this time they spent getting to know each other for real. So you get lust and beginnings of romance/love, a little struggle but it was just missing the bulk of them really falling, dating, etc. Had some more of that been included I think this would have rated higher for me.
I am excited about the series, though. There's some nice set ups with her girlfriends and his brothers and future romances. While some of her friends got on my nerves I liked his brothers and seeing them come home after years away. So a promising kick off to a series.
**You can see this full review and more at Book Briefs: https://bookbriefs.net**Hometown Cowboy is the first book in the adult contemporary romance Rocky Mountain Riders series by Sara Richardson. This is the first book I have read by Sara, but it won't be my last because I really enjoyed this cute read. It was a quick and satisfying, (mostly) fluffy read. Fans of small town romances will enjoy Hometown Cowboy, and the cast of characters will leave you excited to journey back to this town for future couple's stories.
Hometown Cowboy is Jessa and Lance's tale. Lance starts out as a cocky son of a gun, and Jessa is sweet as pie. I was a little worried that he was going to be too much of a jerk for sweet little Jessa Mae, but surprisingly he won me over. They worked well together. The book follows a bit of a predictable plotline, but it turned out just the way I wanted it to. My favorite part of all was the chemistry between Jessa and Lance. They have chemistry and URST in spades.
The cast of secondary characters was great as well. They will lend themselves nicely to future books and pairs. I can't wait to come back to the Rocky Mountain Riders series to see what happens with the rest of the crew. The only thing that was lacking for me, was a bit of the romance towards the end. Before I knew it, I was at the epilogue, and while I loved it, I wanted to see more of how they got there. I wanted to see a little bit more of the journey for Jessa and Lance. But overall, this was a good read. I will be continuing on in this series for sure.
I LOVED this book, the characters, and the family. Everything about this story gave me all of the feels. Even at moments when I wanted to shake my head at Lance's character, I couldn't help but understand what he was going through because of his difficult background.
I also loved the character of Jessa and how much she held her own and valued herself while continuing to believe in love.
I cannot wait to continue the rest of this series because I loved this book so much!
***Thank you to Forever Publishing for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.***
I had so much fun reading this and getting to know Jessa and Lance. It was just so entertaining and sweet. By the end, I was smiling big time!
A hot, stubborn cowboy plus a woman who is trying to avoid love? Those two combined made for such a great story. I loved getting to learn Jessa and Lance’s histories and watch them open up. I thought they had fun chemistry and I liked their flirting and banter. I loved the humor and Jessa’s attitude about love. They both have some issues they were working on and I liked the drama that those things brought to the story.
This was just fun to read and lose myself in, totally enjoyable. There was a great cast of characters. I liked Jessa’s relationship with her girlfriends and how sweet that was. The relationships between the women brought some laugher to the story and was really entertaining. I loved the male bonding with the brothers, I am such a sucker for that. They had a really interesting back story that seemed to very much shape who they are. It will be fun to see where the series goes and what adventures will happen. For the most part I felt this was a light read but there were some serious moments involved and emotions came into play, I like how it all blended together.
I really liked the overall story and details. Not overly in depth but it was really descriptive and had a great build. I thought the writing was really good. The first half seemed a bit drawn out to me but the second half had a great flow. Low heat. Nice drama. Awesome connection between the main characters. I was kind of back and forth between liking and loving it but the last 25% pushed me over to love!
Such a sweet love story about people finding love, healing, and truly connecting!
Jessa Mae Love is not looking for love at all. She’s way to busy trying to keep her animal shelter open and her role as small town veterinarian keeps her very busy—very busy… too busy to be lusting over the living legend rodeo star in town… nope, definitely too busy for Lance Cortez. Until Lance offers up a proposition she just can’t turn down—keeping an eye on Lance’s dad while Lance trains for the rodeo finals. He’s trying to prove he’s still “got what it takes” on the rodeo circuit and doesn’t have time to focus on keeping his dad out of trouble nor the time to focus on the gorgeous now grown up Jessa. Nope… not even when she’s under his roof, no matter how tempting she may be…
Lance has been busy getting busy on the rodeo circuit—but he’s looking for one more shot at taking the crown in bull riding—he just needs to keep his head in the game, but when Jessa enters the picture, Lance is hesitant to admit that maybe there’s something more to life than just bull riding—maybe something with Jessa.
Whoa… hot, sexy cowboy versus sweet, smart veterinarian? Who will win the battle of wills—lust, love or fear? Jessa is trying to keep up with life. She’s still smarting from her father’s recent death—and her father was best friend’s with Lance’s dad, Luis. I love the relationship between Jessa and Luis—it’s very sweet how Luis takes Jessa under his wing and steps into a fatherly role. The same with Jessa taking on a daughterly role in how she keeps track of him and deeply cares for him. I also really liked Jessa and Lance together—they’re hella sexy but also have this deep seeded spark that’s the cornerstone of their relationship. They both have baggage that needs to be overcome, but damn, it’s worth it in the end. I look forward to more sparks flying with Lance’s brother’s books—Lucas and Levi will soon have me swooning too! ~ Missy, 4 stars
Hometown Cowboy is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Riders series and already I am in love with the characters. Jessa and Lance were easy to love characters. While Lance is preparing for a rodeo he needs to keep his focus on that but when he needs someone to look after his father while he is training he asks Jessa. Jessa helps out but she is starting to become a distraction Lance cant afford which I thought was really cute.
I enjoyed the storyline and was glad it was on the different side of some of the cowboy books that I have recently read. The details were of the things that really stood out for me. Richardson described the sceneries and the characters flawlessly. Another thing that really pulled me into the story was that these two knew each other from their childhood and that they weren't just thrown together. Their relationship was work and they had to find a balance between them which I loved.
The one thing I did feel that was missing in Hometown Cowboy was the dating aspect of their relationship. I felt it was skipped over even though they were getting to know one another on a different level. Overall, I am really excited to read this new series by Richardson since I enjoyed her other series so much. Lance has some brothers who already am dying to know more about.

Review:
Hello there cowboy! I think I’m in love with these Cortez boys. They are just the kind of cowboy you want to knock on your door, or sort of break in 😉 I started reading this series in the wrong order, but I instantly fell in love with it and its characters that I couldn’t put the book down and had to know what the first book was about.
“It’s not like he’s a prize. He’s a technology consultant, for God’s sake. Not Chris Hemsworth.”
Jessa is a hopeless romantic, she has had bad luck with men and love, but when she starts interacting with her father’s best friend son, Lance Cortez, she gives love one last chance. On the other hand, the only thing on Lance’s mind is bull riding, at least until he catches a glimpse of Jessa’s curve.
“She couldn’t help it her heart had always been a sucker for romance.”
Jessa is a caring, sweet character, she recently lost her father, and tries to help Cortez senior in all that she can. She’s also very fun and sarcastic along with her book club girlfriends, who are always willing to help her whenever she needs it or is in trouble. And Jessa’s mom is a bonus! Their relationship might be a long distance one, but she’ll always be there for her daughter.
“Hell hath no fury like a scorned woman’s friends.”
Lance is the Cortez’s oldest son, who is trying to focus on himself and his career after taking care of his family for a long time. He can’t have any distractions, especially Jessa. But then things start getting complicated and even though both he and Jessa set boundaries at the beginning, things start getting complicated.
“I’ll pick you up. Six o’clock. Leave Pork Chop at home and wear jeans.”
I am just in love with these books. But I do have to warn you, there is some back story that is mentioned in book one that although mentioned in book two, it is better to know all the facts. So maybe read them in order, unlike me 🙂 Hometown Cowboy, is a fun, romantic book with a story that leaves you wanting for more. Definitely a must-read!
It's been a few days since I finished this one, so all the details aren't fresh in my mind. But I know it was a cute small-town romance with a great cast of characters.
Jessa is a vet running a shelter that her father started and left to her after his death a year before. She would spend summers with her dad growing up and the other times with her mother (they were complete opposites). She's the type of person who loves quickly and gets her heart broken often. So after her recent breakup (via text), she decides she's done with love and men and kissing for a while.
Well, then she meets Lance, who is the son of Luis, the volunteer who helps her at the shelter and her dad's best friend. Their official meeting was pretty hilarious and Lance liked all that he saw. He was quite surprised that the frumpy Jessa was hiding a body under those clothes and was gorgeous. He likes her right away, but you know, she's sworn off men. Lance is also a champion bullrider who everyone thinks should have retired years ago, but he has his father's legacy to live up to and he really wants to prove to himself and everyone else that he can be a winner again. And somehow he manages to ride bulls and run his family's ranch...
I enjoyed the cast of characters in this one. I didn't care for the women as much as the Cortez brothers, but I'm sure I'll grow to like them in future books. This book also tackles caring for elderly parents and how growing old can be scary for both those aging and those who care for them. It was quite sad there for a while but I have high hopes that the Cortez family will grow closer because of this.
Good start to a new series. Jesse is a relationship girl. She wants it all. Husband, kids, house and a dog or two. Lance doesn't believe in relationships. After his mom walked out years ago he swore he never love a woman the way his father had. These two shouldn't work but they do.
Actually really liked Jessa. She's a hopeless romantic, that wants her one true love. But she's also a realist and kind of sassy when the moment needs her to be. Her relationship with Luis is adorable. Wasn't a fan of Lance. Mostly just because I didn't really find anything to spark my interest with him. The romance/relationship between Jessa and him wasn't 100% believable. I didn't feel it. Nonetheless, a quick read.
I almost didn’t read this story. Really, I was so tempted to skip it. It often seems the books I’ve been waiting on from the library (both online and brick and mortar) all become ready at the same time. I just have so much I have to get through that I don’t want to end up back on the waiting list for any of them after waiting so long. This story was actually attached to another story I read. For some reason, the copy I got of Luckiest Cowboy of All included both that one and this one. Sara Richardson is a new-to-me author and, although the blurb about this story piqued my interest, I just have too much on my docket. But I’m also bad at leaving books unfinished. So, although I finished the story I intended to read in this book, I couldn’t leave this story unread since it was included in the same book. To sum up this long paragraph, I wasn’t going to read this story but I’m awfully glad I did.
Jessa has such a huge heart. You could even say her heart is a bit gullible. She’s a full-on romantic so tends to romanticize everything around her. Not just in her own life, but also in the lives of those around her. The author wrote her in such a way that she never teetered over into the realm of ditzy and unrealistic though. She is just a very kind and generous person who wants to see everyone around her happy.
Lance has a lot of baggage that he’s never really tried (or cared to) work through. As far as he’s concerned, he has all he needs. Bulls to ride and his family ranch he shares with his father. Why open his heart up only to be disappointed down the road? When he has an itch to scratch there are plenty of buckle bunnies ready and willing to help him out. Although, he doesn’t even care about that so much anymore.
Even though these characters have known each other for years, it’s been in a peripheral way. Their fathers were best friends, but Jessa only spent summers in town while growing up and she is a bit younger than Lance. For his part, Lance was never one to while away his time hanging out with his brothers or their younger friends. In his mind, his past dictated that he take care of business so he pretty much kept everyone around him at arm’s length.
Once these two are thrown into each other’s orbits the sparks fly. Their first real conversation is pretty hilarious, even while being completely embarrassing for Jessa. But the chemistry cannot be denied, even when they both try so hard to ignore the fire.
"Funny how you can remember every detail about the most significant day of your life. Not the best day of your life necessarily, but the day that shaped you, the day that you were forced to find your strength."
For Lance Cortez, this day is when his mother left her family and never came back, letting him, a fourteen years old teen and his two brothers (ten and seven) and their dad to pick up the pieces. It didn't went well and now, Lance live with his father, while his brothers started a new life elsewhere and they don't really see each other anymore.
Sometimes life make choice for you that you don't want or you're not ready for. No longer a young buck at the rodeo scene, popular opinion say that Lance should have quit the circuit and the media labeled him as a washout. But he's not ready for retirement yet and intend to show them he still got what it takes.
His father been acting weird lately, not like himself, but Lance's not ready to admit something is wrong with his father either. But he knows he can't left him alone. The trouble is, he doesn't have the time if he wants to train for the competition. That's when the heroine enter in the equation.
When her boyfriend dumped her by text message while she's waiting for him at a bar, Jessa Mae Love decide that she had enough with romance and men. Her friend, a sixty-seven years old retired bull-rider, also happen to be the hero's father. Jessa has known Lance her whole life, but they never really talked, if you don't count the maybe five words they exchanged in all the years they've known each other. Lance never noticed her before. But asking her help to find his missing father will change all that and will cause a comical situation too.
When Lance offer her money for the animal shelter she owned, in exchange for her help with his dad, Jessa can't say no. Not just for the cash, but she worry for her friend too. She needs to convince his son that Luis issues might be more serious than he thinks.
It's my first time reading this author, and I liked the book enough to continue the series. There's a couple of things that bugged me and I oscillated between a 3 and 4 all along my reading.
But I had a hard time connecting with and accepting the hero as he was. He was too proud for my taste, too pigheaded and even selfish at times. I understand why he closed off and didn't believe in love and that's probably why I can forgive him for his many missteps with Jessa. At first I felt like he didn't try really hard with her, like it was not worth trying for him if he had to make an effort. But in the end, he made the right decisions.
The heroine was endearing. Kind, easygoing, bighearted, compassionate and a little clumsy. I was happy to see her showing backbone when it was needed.
I didn't like that Naomie (a friend of both the hero and heroine) spend half the book meddling in their business, giving her opinion about their relationship. It's okay to say what you think, especially when it comes with good intention, but it felt like she was trying to made them change their mind about being together. It is fortunate that we knew that she have feelings for the hero's brother and not Lance, or else I would have thought she was jealous and trying to separate them.
It makes me a little worried, since her book is next, but I'm always ready to give a chance to characters and I have to say that Lucas Cortez made a strong impression too.
Finally, I wanted to read this book since I saw those words in the back cover : "outrageous handsome cowboy and small-town veterinarian who wear glasses and rescue animals." With that, I expected to see more scenes with animal, especially Jessa works at the shelter. We meet a cute pig, but other than that, we didn't see her interact with animals when we saw her at her job. An the veterinarian part, I'm still searching for it.
In the end, it was so satisfying to see the Cortez men make peace with the past and be a family again. I thought the author did an excellent job with the prologue, showing us quickly and clearly the Cortez's background. Some of the turn of phrase were so great.
"Hometown Cowboy" was an unexpected, emotional ride (and I mean that in a good way). Lance has had the responsibility for the world on his shoulders since his mother left their family when he was 14 years old and he took on the care of his two younger brothers while his father was on the rodeo circuit. As he was just a kid, he made the best choices he could, but they may not have been best all around- such as letting the good, middle child take the fall for the youngest's arson and then having them both leave town. Lance is now living with his father on the ranch while he trains for the Worlds.
Jessa runs an animal shelter which is struggling financially. She has also been struggling romantically- she has had a few engagements that have fallen through, but she hasn't given up hope for finding the right guy. However, the book begins with her being stood up and then dumped via text by her current boyfriend. Since her father died, she has been cared for by Luis, Lance's father and father-figure to Jessa. She begins to notice some things that are off about Luis, and Lance asks her to stay and watch her father while he trains for Worlds- and if she does so, he'll donate half his winnings to the animal shelter. However, being in such close quarters, their romance sizzles and they may not be able to resist the feelings developing between them.
With a slow build and some intense attraction, I was totally invested in Lance and Jessa. My only concern was that he only became interested in her when she started dressing more nicely and noticed her body. However, they spend more and more time together so the feelings underneath also grow. The part of the book I liked the least was Naomi, Jessa and Lance's friend, who has decided they absolutely should not be together, and really puts herself in the way. Considering she is featured in the next book, I would have liked her to be more of a sympathetic character that I wanted to learn more about, but it almost seemed like she was jealous or something and not a great friend. This might just be my take on it, and I would be curious to see if this is explained in the next book better.
Overall, with sizzling romance, meddling pigs, and personal growth, this book was a win for me, and I really enjoyed reading it. Please note that I received a copy through a giveaway. All opinions are my own.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from Grand Central Publishing and Forever Pub but all opinions included are my own.
I’ve never read a Sara Richardson book before, and I haven’t read very many cowboy romances at all—outside of a few Nora Roberts, I think—so Hometown Cowboy was a fun adventure in trying something new.
It was also just a great book: emotional, tender, and sexy, with an adorable heroine and hero who kind of stumble into love.
The romance between perennially-looking-for-love Jessa Mae Love and always-focused-on-bull-riding Lance Cortez starts in somewhat She’s All That fashion, when Jessa Mae’s caught wearing a brand-new bra that does wonderful things for her bust and Lance suddenly notices her. Though Lance’s attention is caught, his attraction doesn’t stop there (luckily for all parties concerned, us readers included).
Jessa Mae might be known for having a number of broken engagements, but Lance also discovers that--besides being beautiful--, she’s devoted to the people she cares about, and as he notes on a couple of occasions, she’s not afraid to put herself out there emotionally.
But Lance needs Jessa Mae to help take care of his dad, her good friend, so that he can concentrate on winning the Worlds bull riding competition. And there’s no way that Lance wants to get involved with Jessa Mae, anyway, because he does not want to be in a relationship, will never want it, and she’s got that written all over her.
Dear Readers: what do you think will happen?
Richardson takes us on an emotionally resonant ride.
Lance’s efforts to navigate his way through relationship life are sometimes pretty funny, especially when he takes advice from other people. But they’re mostly kind of lovely, because he’s someone who’s been scared of love for so long. And I respected Jessa Mae, who may be nice, but proves that she’s no pushover.
The chemistry between Jessa Mae & Lance is stellar, and Richardson has a number of promising secondary characters who revolve around our two lovebirds, helping them on their journey and only rarely discouraging them (though I'm not quite sure what to think about Naomi!).
Hometown Cowboy is a beautiful read that's not afraid to tackle the hard stuff. A love story about people figuring out how to love, and doing it really well. **heads off to read more of Richardson’s books.
This review was originally posted on Once Upon a ChapterI received this book for free from NetGalley, Personal Collection in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I picked up Hometown Cowboy by Sara Richardson because I'm trying to keep my Netgalley ratio as close to 100% as possible. That includes going through my backlist of review titles. What I found was a sweet contemporary romance. Don't let that fool you though! Richardson could spike the heat in this story with no warning whatsoever!
I enjoyed Hometown Cowboy. I started it on my commute between states and set it aside for awhile. It really took some time to get going for me. I liked Jessa enough but there were just times when I would roll my eyes at her a bit. I can't really describe it. She certainly wasn't "too stupid to live" but she was just a little less together than I typically like to see heroines. I think part of that is that she wanted someone.....anyone really to love her and give her a happily ever after. The bar was kind of low for candidacy.
Then there is Lance. He embodies everything a "typical cowboy" is which is to say dumb as a fence post when it comes to pesky things like emotions. For the most part I found this to be tolerable. I liked Lance enough but to be completely honest I felt like he didn't have much of a personality or story. I had to look up his name to write this review and I finished the book only a few days ago. Now Lucas (Lance's brother).....he's a different story. I'm actually kind of excited for his book.
The shining star in Hometown Cowboy for me was Luis. I apparently have a thing for lonely old men. Nothing will zing my heart faster and I have no idea why. None. It's weird, I know. There were a few other secondary characters that I enjoyed and I am looking forward to seeing them in future books.
There are some things that Richardson addresses in Hometown Cowboy and I can't really go into it with much detail without spoiling the two biggest plot points. What I will say is that I felt they were dealt with without much fanfare. I found that to be anti-climatic. The story builds up these two pseudo-mysteries and then when they are discussed it just seemed so blasé.
In the end Hometown Cowboy by Sara Richardson was a sweet contemporary romance. I enjoyed it but the only reason I'm really going to continue the series is because I'm curious about the remainder of the brothers.
Carolyn Brown, Luckiest Cowboy of All (#3 of The Happy, Texas Series) - I can't remember if I've ever read one of Ms. Brown's books; I hope so. I love to read any books situated in Texas, except those written by people who don't know anything about us. This is a heartwarming, suspense filled, second chances at love for four interesting people. The fun story moves along at a fast pace and before you know it, the story is finished.
There's no stupid formula in this story; just open communications between all involved in their part of the story. There are multiple stories on going with family and friends. All the supporting characters are also interesting, likable and communicate amongst themselves with realistic dialog. I'm looking forward to reading more by Ms. Brown. 5*
My paperback copy includes a preview of Cowboy Bold (unread) and a second story by Sara Richardson, Hometown Cowboy, 2*, which does not belong with Brown's book; clean and smart verse not clean and stupid. The print was too small to be comfortable to read at night.
Sara Richardson, Hometown Cowboy - This book should not have been put in the same paperback as Luckiest Cowboy of All, 5*, by Carolyn Brown. There's vulgar language and gauging the female character's attitude, stupidity and instant heat for the main character, the next morning after her boyfriend dumped her (always dumped), there's probably sex. I couldn't get into the two main characters. I guess he's OK, less the vulgar language, but she was too stupid for me. She's a veterinarian, practicing - not fresh out of high school, and she doesn't have any sense, just plain stupid and childish; definitely an idiot.
They're searching for his missing father in the mountains and all she can think about is how hot the son is; they're on one ATV. This is still the next morning. This is a popular, predictable formula that I come across frequently, but it is stupid and usually comes with vulgar language and explicit sex, (rarely necessary and extremely boring). I quit when she broke into tears, instead of planning how conduct the search after finding the father's ATV. I won't finish this book or read another by Richardson. The print was too small to be comfortable to read at night. 2*
This was fun and quirky. I hated to see all that Lance and his brothers went through. HOw one sacrificed for another and lost so much due to that sacrifice. How one had to grow up so fast and also lose the thought that love is real and relationships work out and how one seemed to breeze through life and just let things be shrugged off. Lance was a good straight up honest guy. He worked hard and was responsible. He felt the weight of so much on his shoulders. He believed his family, his future and all that encompassed his family’ s ranch was his responsibility. So much on his shoulders that it was surprising he didn’t crumble. Seeing him fall for Jessa and struggle with his feelings was adorable to see. Jessa was a sweetheart. She was kind and caring. She loved Lance’ s dad and saw him as family. So when Lance asked for her help she agreed wholeheartedly not expecting to find love at the same time with the quiet burly man named Lance. We see these two have attraction through the roof and try to fight it. We see them grow close and be friends and than lovers. We see her steal Lance’ s heart and he fights it. We see them both crushed by silly things and fight to find their way to one another once again. Jessa forgets that Lance is wounded by his past and in a short time has had to come to see some many things and deal with the past that he got scared and overwhelmed. by the time she realizes this it is almost to late. Lance makes mistakes but owns them. These two are perfect for each other. She lightens Lance and puts him in line and he helps her feel loved, desired and special. He gives her a family and devotion. Trust and support comes from both so does love and respect. The characters in the book all have you fall for them. The story is sweet and entertaining with some seriously hot moments between Lance and Jessa. this is their fun story on how they fall in love and find their way to each other. How lance rediscovers his family and what really matters. How they both find love with one another.
Hometown Cowboy NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH A COWBOY Jessa Mae Love is done with relationships. But with Jessa now living under his roof, that's easier said than done . . .
I liked Sara Richardson's start to her new series and her side characters. I really think that this was more of a 4.5 star read but I round that bad boy up because the side characters were really good. I think that the books to come are going to be better. The first book is usually when you're fleshing out all the characters and figuring out their personalities and whatnot. The storyline was predictable but all romances are...the guy gets with the girl! Would you really read the book that has the guy meets girl, they date and then break up in the end? No? Didn't think so!! That would be so depressing, I'd need therapy myself and would have to schedule it in on my own calendar. So, for a start - she did really well. Another thing I really like is that she didn't draw out the DRAMA. I'm a drama hater. I admit it. I don't like my drama with a side of angst so this was really right down my alley. Pick this up for a light weekend read. Seriously, you won't be disappointed.
I was given a copy of this ARC from the publisher on NetGalley for an honest review. All of the above comments are my express opinions and no one else's.
First off having a person 2 years my junior described as old is disquieting. Solo this summer I drove 10,000 miles and hiked mountains at 8000 ft. Careful who you call old!
This is, of course a Cowboy Rodeo Romance. The world class bull rider would have to be impossibly handsome sex on a stick charismatic. The gal would have to be a diamond in the rough to rivet his attention. The sparks that fly short-circuiting brains and limbs get described a few times too often. Having him walk in on her naked may be a stretch too far.
A steer is not a bull lacking the proper anatomical attributes for the appellation. A truck is not a car either and any self-respecting cowgirl knows she has to be driving the right pick-up to attract the attention of her cowboy. Cars are for going to meeting Sundays and for trips to the city.
The book continues to obsess excessively over angst driven discussions of attraction and attempts to fend it off. Whereas it may pre-occupy the minds of the principals after the first couple iterations it just becomes repetitiously boring sort of like this review.
The book is one long warm-up for the World Finals but although it may be a ball buster the bull doing the ridin’ walks on two legs. If this is your cup of tea, go for it.
Luis, Lance, Lucas, Levi--someone else likes names beginning with an “L”. In typical fashion we are kept waiting in bated breath til the last possible moment for the main event. I’m too much a realist to believe in HEA’s but that seems to be the stock in trade of the genre.
Hometown Cowboy by Sara Richardson is the story of Jessa Mae Love and Lance Cortez's blossoming relationship in the small town of Topaz Falls, Colorado. Although they have known each other since childhood, Lance never thought of Jessa romantically, and Jessa didn't think that Lance was the relationship type... nor was she interested in pursuing any man after already having her heart broken multiple times. She had officially sworn off all men! Jessa is the owner and veterinarian at the financially struggling Helping Paws Animal Rescue and Shelter, and is also best friends with Luis, Lance’s father, who is a retired award winning bull rider and the owner of Cortez Family Ranch. Lance is the oldest of three brothers, but is the only son who has chosen to stay at the ranch and is following in his Father’s footsteps by becoming a professional bull rider. Lance and Jessa begin to notice each other in a different light when Lance asks Jessa if she would stay at his family's ranch for a few weeks to keep an eye on his Father, until Lance completes his training for the World's Bull Riding Competition. His Father has recently begun behaving strange, which is causing concern-mainly with Jessa, as she spends a great deal of time with Luis. When she agrees to stay at the ranch, and Lance begins seeing her daily, that’s when the sparks begin to fly. And when I say sparks, I actually mean fireworks… because there are some extremely powerful moments shared between Jessa and Lance! Hometown Cowboy is written in a way that the reader will actually experience every emotion, and envision every moment and exchange that takes place between the characters. At times, I almost felt like I was watching a movie because the scenes were written in such great detail. From the way that Ms. Richardson describes the mountain scenery as Jessa is hiking, to the way that she explains the emotions that Lance is feeling as he watches Jessa from across the property. Its truly remarkable, and as a reader, really made the story so believable. Every character in this book has their own story and Sara provides us with details of them all, but manages to intertwine them in a way that shows how they are all inner-connected. I am a huge fan of reading from different character’s perspectives, and if you are too, then you’ll love that aspect of this book. We get to see how Jessa experiences something, and then so smoothly, the next chapter transitions into Lance’s perspective. I think that we are able to gain so much more understanding of the individuals and why they react in the way that they do, when we are able to read from their points of view. I don’t want to give away too much of the story or how it plays out, I will just say that if you love a really good romantic comedy, then you will not be able to put this book down. If you love cowboys, and how childhood can shape us into the adults we become, and hearing about true friendships shared between women, and getting to know how the choices that we make can effect the rest of our lives… then you will not be able to put this book down. If you love really passionate intimate scenes shared between two people who clearly care deeply for each other, then you have got to read this book! I have to say that I adore each and every person in this book, and I am really hoping for a series so that we will have a chance to get to know the brother’s and hear their stories- because I definitely feel as though they have a lot to share with us as well. Excellent writing Sara Richardson! Pink Lace Book Blog is going to keep our eyes on you! I give Hometown Cowboy 4.5 stars!
My Review: Although parts of this book had me laughing my butt off there were parts that were just cringe worthy for me. I swear the male POVs of this titles always make me feel like they are going to just grab the women that is making their pants twitch and just take them right then and there. Which to tell you the truth is just a little weird. I asked my husband to read parts of the male POV of this and then asked his honest thoughts on if that is how he felt when he saw a sexy woman and he told me no and laughed so hard. We have a very good relationship so I don't think he would lie to me. But those parts of the story just made me really cringe.
Jessa on the other hand was wonderful!! My favorite part was early in the story when she's caught in her kitchen in some sexy undies and then things just go from bad to worse. I do know one tip that she gives during this is that you should NEVER have see thru drapes.
In the end I could see this one being turned into a little movie for TV. Most likely not for Hallmark but maybe lifetime or something. I would love to see a lot of this movie and romance play out on screen.
We meet Lance Cortez he's a sexy professional bull rider who at this present time is training for the Worlds. Lance still lives at home with his dad but lately his dad has been acting strangely towards Lance and then wondering off. Lance realises that he knows he needs someone to look after his dad whilst he is training so he enlists the help of his dad's best friends daughter Jessa Love.
Jessa Love is the towns vet and owner of the Animal rescue and shelter. Jessa inherited the business from her dad after he passed away a year before. When Lance offers to donate half of his winnings if he wins the Worlds to her animal and rescue shelter on the conditions that she has to move in with his dad whilst Lance is training so he is not getting distracted. This may sound like a easy enough job but will happen if Jessa starts to become a distraction to Lance and it's not just his dad thats on his mind as he trains?.
