In a kingdom torn by war, Annalise is a young girl on the run, desperate to escape the violence that has consumed her homeland. Jorgen, a hardened knight-for-hire, finds her hiding from brutal bandits and steps in with a blade ready for action.Striking a deal for his protection services, Jorgen commits to get Annalise to the safety of her wealthy aunt. They set off across a land rife with rebellion, where every shadow could be an enemy. With each mile, Annalise's secret weighs heavier, threatening not just their mission, but the very fate of the kingdom. Time is running out, and trust is scarce in a country where allegiance is bought with blood.
Annalise, 16, the sole survivor of her family, is hiding in the ruins of her home in war-torn Dogamshire, when a small group of bandits find her. Luckily Jorgen, a young knight, arrives on the scene and helps to save the day. Annalise, wise beyond her years, promises Jorgen 1,000,000 gold if he can deliver her safely to her imaginary wealthy aunt in a different country ... and so their adventure begins. It's a book for teens and young adults and everything is kept quite simple - a little bit of explanation, a little bit of personal growth, a fair amount of action. It's a nice introduction to heroic fantasy but adults who have read their fair share of fantasy will probably find it unremarkable.
I loved it! I'm not a writer and I'm not very articulate, but I will tell you as best I can that this is an awesome book! There's a lot of action, which is great but I loved watching the main character grow. I don't see her as whiny, I see her as a little bit ignorant as to what her family was doing. I was so glad to see her getting stronger at the end and I hope it continues through the series.
