Věhlasný duchovní román dánského mystika a dramatika, oceněný v době svého prvního vydání jako nejlepší skandinávský román roku; jeho celosvětový úspěch je zapříčiněn jednak brilantním literárním zpracováním, jednak skutečností, že jako jeden z mála vede čtenáře až k nejzazším hlubinám poznání.
V roce 1923 vypsalo nejvýznamnější dánsko-norské nakladatelství Gyldendal velkou soutěž o nejlepší dosud nepublikovaný skandinávský román. Anker Larsen měl doma rukopis, který mu velmi ležel na srdci: po léta nosil tento román v sobě, než jej zpracoval. Nevěřil, že by se o něj někdy nějaký nakladatel mohl zajímat. Tlusté knihy byly z módy a kromě toho to nebyla lehká četba. Přesto po dlouhém váhání poslal kopii. Když si však později přečetl, kolik rukopisů došlo z celé Skandinávie, rozhodl se svůj rukopis raději stáhnout. Domníval se, že nemá šanci, porota přece nebude mít trpělivost přečíst více než deset stránek!
Štěstí však visí na hedvábné niti. Herec, který měl hrát hlavní roli v nové hře v divadle královny Dagmar, náhle onemocněl. Nastal velký zmatek. Kdo by ho mohl nahradit? Anker Larsen se nabídl, že jeho roli převezme, a byl tím tak zaměstnán, že zapomněl svůj rukopis stáhnout. Když šel o několik dnů později do nakladatelství Gyldendal, bylo již pozdě. Nikdo nevěděl, kde kopie obíhá: v Kodani, v okresech, v Norsku?
O půl roku později udělila porota, sestavená ze známých spisovatelů, literárních kritiků a a nakladatelů jednomyslně první cenu neznámému autorovi „Kamene mudrců“. Kniha vyšla v nákladu 20 000 exemplářů a byla do týdne rozebrána. Při svém vydání vzbudila takovou senzaci, že se Anker Larsen stal naráz světoznámým. Přesto se k ní někteří kritikové stavěli rezervovaně či nerozhodně. Byli upoutáni mistrovským sdělovacím stylem, ale nepochopili, že zkušenost věčnosti, základní myšlenka všech jeho děl, byla pro spisovatele realitou stejně skutečnou jako svět hmatatelných viditelných věcí, neoddělitelnou částí jeho bytí.
Dílo Ankera Larsena je natolik nosné a nadčasové, že nachází i po létech široký okruh příznivců z celého světa.

Trist at kun få vil læse den og færre forstå den. For den er et mesterværk.

Having read this book some 20 years ago, and now in 2022, I must confess that I have got much more from this on the 2nd reading than on the first. Meanwhile, I am re-reading some of Johannes Anker-Larsen's books, and discovering new ones. In this process he has become my favourite writer.
The Philosopher's Stone is a translation of the original Danish book De Vises Sten, which came out in 1923.
It is worth noting that most of Anker-Larsen's books, which were all written and published in Danish, were also published in three other Nordic languages (Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish), and in English and German. This means that one can find many of his books in these languages in the libraries. Some of them have also been retranslated and published after 50 and more years after his death.
This book is often named to be the main work by J. Anker-Larsen, but it can be a rather big surprise to find that the other books are more interesting, at least this happened to me. There is nothing wrong with Philosopher's Stone, which tells a story of two young men, from the rural place where they were born in Denmark through their youth, studies in Copenhagen.
The other was a longer time in America, and this had a great, and positive, influence on his character. Both were looking for help, mainly from theosophy, although theosophy is not the theme of the story, although some critics have said that the book is theosophical - it is much more than that, based on Anker-Larsen's deep understanding of the 'present of the now' and the 'present of eternity', ideas that repeat in his books with different characters and meanings.

this is one of those cases where it wasn't what I thought it was, but it hooked me anyway.
