The Rana Look

Rate this book
The author of forty-five New York Times bestselling novels, Sandra Brown is one of the romance world’s most acclaimed writers. Rendezvous magazine has praised her as a novelist whose “larger than life heroes and heroines make you believe all the warm, wonderful, wild things in life.” Now, in the classic romantic tradition her fans have come to love, here is another sexy and extraordinary tale of passion—the story of a woman who gives up fame and fortune...and discovers true love in the last place she expected to find it.

The Rana Look

The modeling world called it the Rana Look...the exotic, one-of-a-kind allure that only supermodel Rana Ramsey could deliver. With her green eyes, olive skin, and wildly lustrous auburn hair, Rana posed for ad campaigns and strutted down runways all over the world, naming her own price to sell everything from cosmetics to women’s lingerie.

But all of that suddenly ended one day when she looked her demanding mother-manager in the eye and said, “Enough.” That was the day Rana packed her things and left New York—and modeling—forever. Settling in Miss Ruby’s boardinghouse in Galveston, Texas, Rana finds success with her own busines—and cultivates a new look to go with her new life. Now her beautiful eyes are shielded behind tinted glasses, her famous figure hidden under shapeless dresses, her trademark wild hair falling straight down her back. Rana knows she’ll never attract a man this way, and that’s just fine with her—that is, until Ruby’s nephew, football star Trent Gamblin, moves in to nurse his injured shoulder. Ruggedly handsome, charming, and undeniably charismatic, Trent is the kind of man that Rana finds irresistible...the kind of man she is certain would never look twice at a woman as ordinary as the new Rana.

But to her surprise, Trent seems unfazed by her Plain Jane look. For he is drawn to a beauty that Rana can’t hide. He is determined to learn the mystery behind the elusive, reclusive boarder with the secret past. To do so, he proposes an unusual pact: they will only be friends, nothing more.As the days pass, Rana and Trent are drawn together in a sensual idyll unlike anything either of them has ever known. But the outside world cannot be kept at bay forever. And Rana fears that when Trent learns the truth about her past, he’ll feel betrayed and deceived. Even worse, he’ll never be able to see her as she truly is. Then an unexpected tragedy strikes, and the stakes seem higher than ever. Now they must look deep into each other’s heart to determine if their relationship is just an impossibly erotic dream—or a dream of love come true.

Bless her heart but I am so glad that Ms Brown improved in her writing style. Fairly awful. No really story line. Hot jock, nondescript woman. She has a past she is trying to hide.

I think I am scraping the bottom of the barrel here, trying to get my reading challenge done!!

Fairly cheesy all around but it was on OK read.

Smarm alert!

Two romances in one story: one between the hero and the heroine, and another between the hero and himself. I’ve said it before and this book confirms it, Sandra Brown serves her characters better when she is stalking, eviscerating and murdering them rather than romancing them.

Our hero is a throwback. No, not throw away although that would be better, but throwback. He is a petulant, egotistical stereotypical man-baby that according to SB pouts his perfect mouth, slams doors, and sullenly stamps around when he doesn’t get his way. What his way is is when he sees the seemingly excruciatingly plain heroine is to tongue-in-cheek give her the thrill of her Plain Jane life by flirting with and seducing her as it’s obvious she’s never been with a man much less a man as awesomeness as the hero. Urp. He’s a quarterback of a fictional Houston football team and his go-to outfit is a pair of tight cutoff jean shorts that heightens his manhood with a team jersey cut off to show off his “mysteriously beautiful naval”. I know, I just know, he has a mullet.

The heroine is not really a Plain Jane. She’s actually the mega-million model of the universe (think Brooke Shields in her Calvins or Cindy Crawford - a skinny CC). She has an overbearing stage mother who starved her on lettuce and wants to pimp her out to wealthy older men that I am waiting with bated breath to arrive on the scene as she sounds just too awful. The h reminisces how hungry she was at 109 lbs at 5’ 10” which probably made her look like this

She’s now gained a whopping 20 lbs, doesn’t wear makeup and is completely and totally unrecognizable.

I would DNF this camp fest, but am waiting for the mother to make an appearance plus the heroine just laid down the law to Doofus in an epic rant that made the H tuck his tail between his tree trunk like legs and sheepishly apologize.

Post heroine rant and mommy
The hero improves DRAMATICALLY although he still exhibits way too much 1980s machismo. He has to be a good guy as he falls in love with the incredibly plain, homely, unattractive heroine, homely and did-I-say plain heroine who now paints clothes as a living. He has to leave for football camp so you know has a chance to come in and do some damage.

Huh? How can she be so jaw droppingly gorgeous one minute and unrecognizable the next?

Ah, the Laws of Physics in the Land of Romance!

The mother drops by and is just as vile as I thought. She’s found a new man to help her instead of her ungrateful daughter who she tried to sell off to an older man. My hope and dream is that the new man is a con artist and takes the money SHE took from the heroine. Crossing my fingers! Lighting a candle!

It comes to a ridiculous head when the heroine gussies up in a white dress and meets the hero at a football party where jaws drop and men can’t get a word out because the heroine is so unbelievably gorgeous. Uh huh.

The hero, in tight pants that show off his muscular legs,

doesn’t recognize her at first. He is true to his plain and homely little heroine though. All heck breaks loose when he figures out the hot babe is actually the plain and homely little heroine he had been having sex with, and he’s furious because he’s been PLAYED. She blathers on about how he loved her for herself and it’s …ugh.

Final Thoughts
Read, or listen, for the camp fest 1980s style where life was lived larger with big hair and bigger shoulder pads.

I don’t think the narrator’s arch tone helped the situation as everything sounded like an innuendo.

Quick read, or in my case listen to that gives you a good feeling, hot romance and doesn't show its age at all. Rana and Trent were great as opposites who attract and fall in love, even if one of them is hiding who they really are.

Rana Ramsey is a world-famous super model who wildly exotic beauty was dubbed the "Rana Look" and emulated by countless women the world over. She was courted by the wealthy and famous and her penthouse in Manhattan was full of beautiful clothes. Except, Rana wasn't happy. Her mother controlled her life and was verbally abusive too. One day, Rana just left it all behind and never looked back. Rana, as Ana R, landed in Miss Ruby's boardinghouse in Galveston, TX and earned her living painting one-of-a-kind clothing. She donned frumpy clothing and hid her gorgeous eyes behind tinted glasses. No one recognized her and that is just the way Rana wanted it.

Rana's ordered, plain existence is upended with the appearance of Miss Ruby's nephew, Trent Gamblin. Trent is a professional football quarterback on the mend from shoulder surgery. Trent could be characterized as God's gift to women. Drop dead gorgeous, sexy and charismatic, Trent loved women and they loved him. Until Rana. She couldn't care less about his rep and Trent couldn't understand why dowdy Rana wasn't falling all over herself when he paid attention to her.

But Trent is a man who can truly appreciate a woman and as he gets to know Rana, he is drawn to her as the person she really is, and they fall in love. Now Rana has a real problem. She is both Rana, beautiful supermodel and Ana R, plain on the outside but beautiful on the inside. When Trent discovers the real woman, what will he do?

Fun lovely story. Guy falls in love with an unattractive girl. It’s on the short side.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
I read the paperback in 2010 and gave it 3 ½ stars. I listened to the audiobook in 2018 and changed my review to 5 stars. The narrator made it better.

It’s a feel good story. I liked someone in disguise and a couple getting to know each other based on what’s inside not outside. I’m glad there was no big misunderstanding. There was some conflict when he learned her true identity, but it wasn’t drawn out into a long, frustrating separation. There are some sex scenes, but they are done with no sex words.

STORY BRIEF:
Rana had a dominating and unloving mother who pushed her into beauty pageants and modeling. Rana became a famous model. Due primarily to her mother’s actions Rana left the business. She moved to Galveston,Texas, where she rented a room in Ruby’s house. Rana gained weight and wears baggy clothes and tinted glasses. She wears her hair in a way to hide part of her face. She paints pictures on clothing which she sells. She feels peaceful there.

Ruby’s nephew Trent is a professional football player with a shoulder injury. He comes to stay with Ruby while his shoulder heals. He’s used to having any woman he wants. He loves ‘em and leaves ‘em. Rana wants to avoid him but has a hard time doing that living in the same house. She’s the only woman around, and he sees her as a challenge. But then they start to fall in love. He still doesn’t know who she is. She never lets him see her without her glasses on.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Eliza Foss was wonderful. I’d be happy to read other books she narrates.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 226 pages. Swearing language: mild. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: 6. Setting: 1986 mostly Galveston, Texas. Copyright: 1986. Genre: contemporary sports romance.

Ketiga, adegan seksnya cukup membuat saya kipas-kipas kepanasan.

Keenam, ensemble cast Rana-Trent-Ruby benar-benar nyambung.

Jadi you're not alone, girl. :-)

Betapa hebatnya pengaruh sebuah cover, buktinya hanya gara-gara wajah perempuan dengan topeng unik saya tertarik membaca buku terbaru Sandra Brown terbitan Gramedia.

Penampilan bukanlah segalanya, Rana malah memperoleh kebahagian sejatinya.

Mirror Image sepertinya rekor tertinggi novel favorit karangan Sandra Brown. Definetely on my next reading list then :)

Supermodel fed up with her Stage Manager from Hell mother runs away to Galveston, Texas, rents an apartment from a kindly older woman, disguises her gorgeous-ness with dowdy clothes and sets up shop as a textile artist. When her landlady's nephew, an NFL quarterback, shows up to lie low and heal from a shoulder injury is when the fun begins.

This is positively enlightened for a category romance first published in 1986 but that doesn't mean it's still not problematic. The "hero" starts out as a total self-absorbed heel and managed to grow as a character, but he's hardly Alan Alda by the end of this. Still it's worth reading for the heroine dressing him down in glorious fashion and calling him out on his epic BS. As someone who's worth has been measured her entire life by her looks she sees straight through him and fires away with both barrels - eventually leading to a truce and friendship.

But, 1986. I'm still puzzling over the fact that the 5'9" heroine's modeling weight was 110 lbs and she was able to remain conscious and upright. Also let me tell you I felt some kind of something when the waitress at a Mexican restaurant the couple goes to is described as "fat."

I wouldn't recommend this book in the same manner I would a romance published in the here and now, but how these two characters play off each other, the common ground they share (she's measured by her beauty, he's measured by his ability to throw a football...), and the way they rub up against each other figuratively and literally made this an entertaining read. Just, you know, it's a romance novel published in 1986. Don't expect something that would have been serialized in Ms. magazine....

Audiobook. Ok so this is not one of her mystery books but was still a nice book. It is small compared to her other books. This is a short sweet little romance story. Between a beautiful woman and a cocky man. Trent was a pretty comical guy. I liked how he handled Rana. I loved how she was combating her need for independence. Her mother ugh what a witch. Either way this is a short, nice read. Enjoy

Review:
This was only the 2nd Romance but 3rd Book ive read by Sandra and i have to say this one was ALOT better then the last Romance i read. This one reminded me alot of "Breakfast At Tiffany's" with Audrey Hepburn.

The Characters were so fun and enjoyable to read about. Rana, Ruby and Trent were definately my favorites. I loved how Rana embraced her Natural Beauty without Makeup which i feel more women should do cause that's how God intended us to be.

Ruby's Straight forward advice is what made me love her character. Trent was abit childish in the beginning but im glad he mellowed out in Chapter 3.

The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was in Texas while reading especially when the scenery was described.

Overall a Good Romance!! Can't wait to read more by Sandra in the future!!

The most okay book ever.

It really wasn't bad but also not good. The conflict I saw from a mile away. I also didn't understand the love. I never really believed that he loved her. Overall it was weird and just ok.

A light fun read from Sandra Brown. I enjoyed this book (audio), it's a quick read, light hearted but deals with the problem of being judged for how you look and not what's inside. If you are looking for a good author to read, you can't go past Sandra.

Now here's a 1980s romance that has held up since its original publication date. If you can look past the author's trademark purple prose and hilarious obsession with male chest hair, it is ultimately a sweet story about two people who discover what love truly means.

Rana Ramsey is an internationally known model, famous for the titular 'Rana look.' This life of supposed fame, fortune, glamour, and money makes her absolutely miserable, mostly because her mother is an absolutely horrible. Fed up, she runs away from the world she knows, settling in as a frumpy spinster in Galveston, TX. She disguises her body in shapeless clothes, her eyes with tinted eyeglasses, lets her hair hang long and lank, and quite naturally gains 20 lbs (by eating like a normal person) to fill out her figure.

She's made a life for herself as a fabric artist, and sells her handiwork through a connection she made during her modeling days. She lives in a boardinghose with her landlady, who provides the bumbling comic relief in this piece. She is horrified when said landlady's arrogant professional-football-playing nephew comes to convalesce for the summer prior to his training camp.

Trent Gamblin is a complete asshole at the start of the book. He thinks he's God's gift to women, and since dowdy ol' "Miss Ramsey" is obviously a lovestarved spinster, he decides he'll have fun with her during their time together in the boardinghouse. He starts pulling his usual obnoxious bullshit, but Rana calls him on it in an amazingly kickass way. Like, this is a feminist rant that resonates today, thirty-odd years later. It is truly a thing of beauty, and a complete breath of fresh air, considering even the strongest women tended to fold under their love interest's thumb the second he showed any interest in this era of romance novels.

Trent can't avoid his baffling attraction to his neighbor, though, so he agrees to become her friend, and then freely admits he doesn't know how to be friends with a woman. Rana educates him on how to treat a woman as a human being instead of a sex object, and slowly but surely a friendship blossoms between them. They are still attracted to each other, but their instalust deepens into something resembling love, especially when Trent actually starts apologizes for arguing with her over stupid and petty shit.

Trent doesn't completely escape his alpha/asshole ways, including a long scene where he sulks because of his sexual frustration and how Rana (whom he knows as Ana) is obviously either frigid or a prude, and . But for the most part, he is a remarkably likeable hero for an 80s-era romance. Forced to develop feelings in order to sate his sexual needs, he manages to grow as a person as well. He falls in love with plain little Ana and doesn't care who knows it - his aunt, his teammates, the world.

There's a great scene were he introduces Ana to his best friend, and said best friend rails at him after the fact for using Ana just to stroke his fragile male ego. Ha! Excellent comeuppance.

The tragedy mentioned in the back-cover blurb is . This ultimately is what brings Rana and Trent together, in a comforting-embrace-leads-to-more kinda way. They both throw caution to the wind, fall head over heels in love, and have tons of mind-blowing sex, and Rana worries that if she ever reveals her "true" identity - that she's not just plain Ana, but glamorous Rana - that Trent will hate her and push her away.

I really like Rana's growth arc, because she is a love-starved individual, as for the entirety of her life, no one could see past her looks to see the real her until she went underground, so to speak. Trent fell in love with her in spite of her plain features, and it meant more to her than anything in the world. I really connected with that, and thus were happy for their happily ever after.

---

I've had this book on my bookshelf for years. I decided to read it for the May challenge, Author of the Month.

The Rana Look is a very quick and easy read. I would label this a "don't judge a book by its cover" theme. Rana as a model, appears to have the world by a string, but she isn't happy. Rana, as Ana, looks average but is comfortable and independent.

With a vicious stage mother/ manager, Rana is a top model making millions. Her mother lived off her daughter's career and made Rana miserable. When she has enough, Rana leaves her mother and NYC to relocate to Texas. She changes her look and dress to avoid recognition. While hiding out, Rana meets her landlady's nephew, Trent, a professional football player. The couple begins a romance, but the romance takes a hit when secrets come out.

I've read many of Brown's suspense/mystery stories that I love. This book is my first romance by Sandra Brown. It is a good story, but it could be better. Like many short stories, there are a lot of gaps and unanswered questions, like a Reader's Digest version, and they require a hand-wave or an eye-roll. Also, the conflict fell short. I didn't understand Trent's upset. It seems forced and not in character with the man we meet initially.

That said, I enjoyed most of the story overall.
