Kate on Vacation #4

Missing on Maui

Rate this book
It’s an awkward situation at best, and a deadly one at worst.

Days before Kate Huntington is scheduled to leave for her niece’s wedding on Maui, she receives a frantic call from said niece. Amy’s mother–Kate’s rather difficult sister-in-law–is at it again, alienating the groom’s family and even the wedding planner. Can Aunt Kate come early and run interference?

Soon after her arrival, Kate discovers that young women are going missing on the island, and Amy’s maid of honor is hanging out with a notorious local player. Is he involved in the disappearances?

Hawaii is supposed to be a relaxing paradise, but Aunt Kate is kept busy locating a new wedding planner (the delightful Pali Moon), refereeing between Amy and her mother and chasing down errant wedding party members... Oh, and facing off with a psychopath.

Psychology and writing (or writing and psychology) have always vied for the number one spot on my list of greatest passions. I am now a retired psychotherapist and can afford to spend as much time as I want on my writing.

I am in Heaven! (Well, actually I live in Florida now.)

Some people have asked me if my protagonist, psychotherapist Kate Huntington, is me. I wish! She's much more consistently kind and compassionate than I am.

I was born and raised in Maryland and lived there most of my adult life. In addition to my psychotherapy practice, I also taught at Towson University for a decade. It was my favorite job of my entire lifetime, so I decided to base my first series, the Kate Huntington mysteries, in Towson, Maryland. My newer series, about a service dog trainer, is set in central Florida near where I live now, the Marcia Banks and Buddy cozy mysteries.

I blog about psychological topics, or anything else that strikes my fancy, about twice a month at www.misteriopress.com.

I don't like to review my own books. That seems wrong. But I'll use this space to give a little background information. This was actually the first Kate on Vacation story that was born in my mind, when another author and I were joking around about how our protagonists should get together to solve a mystery. (JoAnn Bassett's books are set in Hawaii.) But then I got to thinking about that and came up with the basic plot for this story.

But I'd never been to Hawaii, so I wrote three other Kate on Vacation stories first, based on places I had been to, while trying to convince my husband that a trip to Hawaii was "necessary" for my writing career. :D

Finally we visited the Aloha State, and I was able to write the story of how the wedding planner, Pali Moon, (JoAnn's protagonist) and Kate Huntington *cough* got into trouble together *cough* I mean solved the mystery of the missing young women.

Who wouldn't want a Hawaiian vacation to attend the wedding of their niece? This is where we go this time with Kate Huntington as part of the Kate on Vacation Mystery series. And wow, what a vacation!

The author not only gives us a page turning mystery, we get to learn lots of facts about Hawaii. While Kate is enjoying her trip, she comes across a situation that worries her even more than the difficult mother of the bride. Kate doesn't just relax on vacations, she always manages to get involved in some type of mystery. This is a well written novella with interesting characters. I especially liked Pali and how she worked well with Kate.

If you haven't read any of this series, you really must do so. Take a vacation without leaving your house. Highly recommend!

Kassandra Lamb'a Kate on Vacation Mysteries have been very enjoyable and fun so far. Missing on Maui did not disappoint me. Kate Huntington-Canfield is a very curious individual. She uses her curiosity, study of human behavior, and love for her family and friends to guide her. I love Kate and her PI husband Skip. When I came across Pali Moon's I wondered where I had heard it before and was thinking about deja vu. I had to stop and go do some research and find out where I knew the character from. The Hawaiian setting made me want to be in that tropical paradise. Kirk's mission is a problem that we should all be aware of. Kudos to Kassandra Lamb for bringing our attention in her last two books to problems that our society needs to be aware of today. Fun and informative.

Another fantastic story from Kassandra Lamb!!!! I couldn't stop reading from the moment I started. The cover itself is gorgeous. The story grabs your attention right from the very first page and keeps you turning the pages faster and faster to see what develops. In addition to a mystery, and a wedding, and lots of action, you get a bit of a Hawaiian travelogue. ALL this is neatly contained within a short "novella"! WOW. I just loved this story. A great addition to the Kate catalog of books. I love them all.

This was a fun read in the Kate Huntington series. I especially enjoyed it having been to Maui a couple years ago and reading about some of the places I visited. Kate is off to Maui for her nieces wedding especially to help with the brides mother. She stumbles across a situation that has her worried and looking into it while she is there. The author has a great way of combining romance and mystery and keeping it very enjoyable. Looking forward to more stories about Kate.

To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this novella as it was provided free via InstaFreebie and the author.

I was more than pleasantly surprised by the well written, entertaining plot that reads like an intelligent "cosy" mystery.
A plot that included a local mystery combined with the frighteningly real subject of human trafficking. It held my attention till the very last page .... and then I promptly downloaded the first of the series. I can't wait to read it!

A quick and compelling read. The plan was to read a few chapters then get some sleep. Four hours later the book was done.

This is a great read for many reasons. A wedding set in Hawaii with beautiful description of the location and its people but Kate brings the awareness of things that just seem a little off with members of the wedding party. While it takes her time to figure out what is going on it certainly isn't boring and what becomes apparent is something is something we all need to be more aware of. Definitely worth reading.
