Julia Gfrörer is an American cartoonist, graphic novelist, illustrator, and author. Her work is often transgressive, invoking occult themes within an ambience of subtly observed historicist concerns.
Julia Gfrörer sure knows how to pack a ton of story into just twenty pages. At it's core, Dark Age is about the passage of time and the inevitability of decay. The title may simply be evocative of a time where knowledge as currency only just became a relevant concept, but the people of the time were yet to comprehend the endgame of their own progress. Similarly, the main characters in this comic come to terms with their own lack of knowledge about the dimly lit cave which they traverse. With each page Gfrörer contributes the slightest of hints as to what lies ahead, but ultimately the comprehension of the larger cave remains hidden - not too dissimilar to Plato's allegory of the Cave.
The unfolding of events is pretty surreal and thus a fair bit confounding as to what Gfrörer's thesis is, but ultimately I had a great time with deciphering each little detail in this short comic. Dark Age is definitely worth checking out.
