“You only get one life, make the most of it.”
I’m guessing that screwing my way through the female talent for the last ten years wasn’t what Louis Sachar had in mind when he said that.
Piece of shit. Home wrecker. Manwhore.
I’ve been called them all.
Earned them too.
I can’t erase what I’ve done, I own it all. It just damn sure isn’t the legacy I imagined leaving behind when I finally hang up my boots and call it quits.
I’m not who I was when I agreed to do this for the rest of my life.
To be this.
The best professional wrestler on the planet? A Heavyweight Champion in multiple promotions? The top dog?
That I wanted.
It’s in the selling of my soul to the devil and becoming Gavin the character more than Gavin the man that I didn’t see coming.
Somewhere along the way, dollar signs and perks overtook the rush of being in the ring.
Overtook the dream.
Changed me.
So I did what my man Louis up there said.
I made the most of it until the most wasn’t good enough anymore.
I’m tired.
Tired of being Gavin “The Manwhore” Fortune.
After ten years, one too many burned relationships, and a black mark that no matter how much I do, I can’t wash off, I’m ready to be me.
No Fortune.
Just Gavin.
And Dawson, the newest devil in my world, she can get me there.
I just need to find a way to make her like me first.

Mother, Sister, Daughter, Best Friend, Avid Book Reader, Author, Overall Crazy Person.

I'm Melyssa and I was born and raised in what is now known as the mega city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'm the country girl stuck in the city girls body and anytime I can get away from the big city lights and settle somewhere far more slower is always such a treat.

I'm a mother to probably the four most amazing kids on the planet. (Yes that's a typical mom answer isn't it?) They have brought so much joy to my life and without them I'm not entirely sure where or what I'd be doing. They've taught me so much that I only hope I can do the same for them as they grow.

When I'm not with them I'm doing one of two things. Either curled up with my e-reader and as many books as I can handle or watching marathons of Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy or Veronica Mars.

Lastly, I'm always on the lookout for my next book boyfriend, even if I have to create him in my own stories. can't go wrong with a good book boyfriend. :)

A shoot in professional wrestling is any unplanned, unscripted, or real-life occurrence within a wrestling event.

Now that we’ve covered the meaning of the title let’s get down to business.

"Enough is enough and it's time for a change." ~ Dawson

That's pretty much the theme of this book – for Gavin Fortune. He is the professional wrestler working for HFWA. And Dawson Traymore was just hired to be the new backstage personality. Both are looking to start over. For her, it’s a career change. For him, it’s a personality change. He’s tired of being known as the dick that no one can get along with. He’s tired of the persona he’s constructed around himself in order to climb his way to the top. No doubt, Gavin Fortune has earned the slanted eyes people give him and the mistrust thrown his way. He’s stepped on everyone as he’s climbed his way to the top. But he’s so tired of the act. Because in his heart of hearts, he just wants to be Gavin. A guy who wants to find someone to love him when he’s on the road, someone to miss him, and someone he can love and miss in return. but all the scripted and unscripted acts he’s performed along the way has turned him into someone he isn’t. Or didn't used to be. And now he’s having a difficult time separating who he is in the ring and when the lights are off, and everyone goes home.

Enter Dawson Traymore. The complication that entered his life when he sat beside her at a bar before realizing who she was – then figuring it out by the things she said but didn’t admit who he was before having a one-night stand with her. Gavin knew he would see her the next day when she was introduced as the new ‘backstage personality’ and she would discover her one-night stand was none other than 'Gavin Fortune' and now she would be working with him and she would be embarrassed or humiliated or livid because she told him what her new job was and he…said…nothing.

Yep. I shook my head, too. Idiot.

But this is where it gets good. I swear it. You have to come along for this ride. The Gavin we see at the beginning of this book is not the same Gavin we see by the end of it.

This was what I loved about this story. The amount of character development Gavin undergoes is gripping. He struggles with his own self-worth throughout and it was a near tangible thing. Like you can hold it in the palm of your hand. You feel for him. You root for him. And at some point, I was pissed at all the people who gave him shit all the time. I just wanted everyone to leave him alone.

I won’t go into any more details about the book. I’d rather you read for yourself. But I will say there are some excellent scenes in the ring and I was picturing it all so vividly that I was holding my breath. I'm not even into professional wrestling but the author made me care about these characters and I grew to have a better understanding of what professional wrestlers do.

This was definitely one of my favorite books by Melyssa Winchester. I wish more people would read her work. She’s truly a gifted storyteller.
