She's a fearless pilot from the starving Mars Colony. He's the rebellious nephew of Earth's treacherous Chancellor. Together they'll change two worlds, or die trying.
"I can't recommend this story highly enough!" -Nathan Lowell.
Saving Mars is a science fiction adventure series set in a dystopian future where a small colony on Mars has survived for centuries without any contact with Earth, until now.
I think this is a great young adult, old-time sci-fi story, reminding me of Andre Norton and other books I read when I was in junior high. I don't need to know if the science works, I just want to be grabbed by the story, be interested in characters, and enjoy. This 2-book set did so. It was well-written as to form and language and edited properly, (which is such a relief).
Marsians trying to survive in a society of their own, down to their own sayings, parables, and swear words. Their food reserves have been destroyed by a fire and our valiant and inexperienced young and older members of the Marsian society take their places on space ships headed to Earth. Two of our main characters are Jess, a young female pilot who lacks patience and a filter on her mouth and her brother Ethan, who is on the spectrum - a genius with issues of being touched, small spaces, noises.
Their biggest fear is being caught and their bodies being taken from them. Earth, in order to resolve it's overpopulation issues, moves people's brains/souls/essence with the experienced adults being given young bodies and the young being moved into older bodies to learn their vocation. No one lives past age 72 and prison is being put into an old, unhealthy body to work in the mines.
On Earth Jess meets a young man. He is already in the process of questioning most of Earth's politics and eventually believes Jess and comes to her rescue when things go bad. The beginnings of a romance, but not overdone and nothing past a kiss, leaving the story appropriate for the young reader.
Book 2, is the adventure of Jess returning as a hero to Mars with the nutrient bars and her pursuit of returning to Earth for several reasons that I won't mention because I don't want to give away the plot.
I was drawn into both worlds, into the characters, and into the story. Enough so that I would read the next book in the series. I obtained books 1 and 2 over 2 years ago from Amazon for free and just happened to pull it up on my Kindle this week.
The first couple of books in this series provided an interesting read although I had a hard time reconciling a few things such as why there has been no real progression in space or space travel since the colony on Mars was established, how it's possible to enter earth's atmosphere and land without anyone knowing, how Mars even has any "wet rations", etc. Having said that, the story was compelling and the characters were endearing. It will be interesting to see what becomes of both Earth and Mars as the series progresses.
Have you ever considered what life on Mars would be like? The first two books in the Saving Mars series certainly gives you a lot to think about. As a species are humans really capable of living on a planet that is so inhospitable as Mars was shown to be? Life on earth is not always easy but life on Mars is downright intolerable without special accommodations. I can't wait to continue reading the rest of the series.
This book was so good!!!!! I cried, I laughed, I felt the struggle of all of the characters! It was stressful and exciting but came together in a magnificent way!!
Good, thought-out ideas. I found some characters less likable given their combinations of skill sets vs. ability to learn. Story picks up more in the second book.
Plotted well. The conflict between Earth and the human civilization on Mars is not economic or widespread, but philosophical. Our "hero" is a 17-year-old girl, who is a pilot is training. It is obvious that the author has done her research, and avoids any glaring errors in space navigation. A rather fast read.
I can't wait to get the next book to find out how Jess and Pavel continue with their adventure. I have been reading for 50 plus years and I appreciate new books to read. Thanks Cidney Swanson keep up the good writing!
I absolutely loved the entire series. I received the first two books for free, then promptly bought the rest. I will be following this author for a long time.
I realized at 41% completion that I didn't actually care what would happen to any of the characters, so I'm marking this one a "couldn't finish." The writing is adequate if not great, and if the characters had been at all interesting I would have kept going, despite a couple of really preposterous premises.
