Penny Hanover had everything a girl in 1892 could want; a good job, a handsome man, and a ring as a promise. A normal night at the sweet shop turns terrifying as a gunman and a single shot rips her world apart. Penny wakes to find she can’t remember that day…or the love of her life. Josiah Williams has a big secret and the residents of Cutter’s Creek love to speculate. When Josiah is accused of shooting his beloved, he can only do his best to finish the job he’s started and try to win his Penny back. He wants her to regain her memory and return to the woman she was, with his ring on her finger. But, is that too much to ask?
Kari Trumbo is a writer of historical and contemporary Christian romance and romantic suspense. She's a mom to four wonderful children. When she isn't writing or editing, she loves to read, sing, and knit. Kari loves curling up with a fluffy blanket when winter hits. She makes her home in central Minnesota with her husband of over twenty years, two daughters, two sons, many cats and one sweet bunny.
She also writes women's fiction under the name Teri Blake.
I enjoyed a return to Cutter’s Creek and each of these stories read as a standalone but may have characters from previous stories. This story is about Penny Hanover and Josiah Williams and issues that nearly ruin their relationship. There are secrets, but sometimes secrets must be kept to protect others and yet, at times those secrets could cost the lives of someone you love dearly. Josiah Williams has secrets, but he must maintain those secrets to keep people safe. When a man comes into the shop Penny works at and pulls a gun; Penny is shot and nearly dies. She is unconscious for days, and when she wakes up, she is missing vital pieces of her memory and that night in question, but even more frightening, she doesn’t remember Josiah. Josiah is accused of shooting her and in jail while Penny is in the doctor’s office. Will her memory return and was Josiah the shooter? What are the mysterious transports that Josiah goes on? Is he her hero or villain?
The plot of the story is full of angst, anger, misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and mistrust. Little things will be said and set people off on a tangent. No matter how confusing things get, when turning to God and asking for His guidance, the way is made clear. There is a great cast of characters, a unique situation, and when it is all out in the open, a clearer understanding. There is nothing wrong with doing something honorable, especially when it is done for the right reason.
Unfortunately, Josiah has a fairly big secret he keeps from her, and in the meantime she gets severely injured because of it. When Penny wakes up, she has lost all memory of her beloved Josiah.
I appreciated the history lesson on what the secret was...if I learned that in school, I had forgotten!
Lots of action, suspense and intrigue in this story. The only part I didn't care for was that no one really bothers to explain who Ruby was to poor Penny. I would have jumped to the wrong conclusion as well! Even after it was all solved, I was surprised she never asked and that Josiah never bothered to elaborate. Maybe it's just me, but I wish that would have been dealt with.
Speaking of Ruby...looking forward to her story next!
I received this book free from the author and am voluntarily choosing to review it. This is the first book that I've read from the Cutter's Creek series, and I enjoyed it. It's a sweet, clean read. There are secrets and mysteries to be solved. There are nice characters in the story that you want o help them clear up any mistrust between them. I found the story very pleasant and will probably read more of Cutter's Creek
This is the fifth book in the Cutter's Creek series. It is concurrent with the previous book, at Lily Blooms and leads into the author's next which is A Ruby Glows. This story was quite interesting with all secret being held by Josiah, a partial memory loss by Penny and some historical facts about the difficulties faced by former slaves even several decades after the Civil War. It is a wonderful story!
Lots of twists and turns. Wonderfully written. I really like this author. She is a new favorite. The whole series is wonderful so far. I have read all the books up to this one and they are amazing. The are by several authors but are very cohesive. A wonderful set of authors.
3 stars I purchased the novella Cutter's Creek book 5: A Penny Shines by Kari Trumbo and this review is given freely. Lily's friend Penny is shot at the Sweet Shoppe resulting in a shoulder injury, amnesia, and her fiance' Josiah being placed in jail. This short romance is filled with episodes of PTSD, some secrets, is mildly suspenseful and involves a modern underground railroad.
Oh my goodness! What can I say! What Penny went threw until he end was unheard of in this day and time! Loved every minute of book 5 of Cutters Creek Series! Cannot wait to delve into book 6 now! Enjoy!
Romantic and a bit sad, this story will keep you reading, Penny and Josiah have so many misunderstandings in their relationship, can they overcome them all?
A high adventure with lots of action! This clean romance has lots of happenings, a secret that almost ends an engagement, and new friendships. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I wanted to love it but in the end I didn't even finish it. It just felt like there was too much going on. I may give it another try soon though because I feel bad for not finishing it.

Penny had everything she could want – a good job and a fiancée – however tragedy struck crushing the picture perfect life she created. As if getting shot at work and finding out your fiancée is to blame is the worst of it, Penny doesn’t remember anything about the day it happened or the love of her life.
Josiah holds a big secret which caused his precious Penny to get shot. He holds out hope that she will wake up and tell the sheriff the truth – that he didn’t shoot her. He must finish the job that he started and figure out how to tell Penny the truth and hope that she understands his secret and will stand by him when she finds out.
The premise of the story is full of misunderstandings, secrets, and anger mixed in with love and compassion. This book has a great set of characters that has their own unique problems and secrets. It shows that there is nothing wrong with doing something for the right reason even if others might see it as dishonorable or secretive.
I enjoyed reading this book by the author with the clean and true to life story that she created. The book can be read as a standalone without feeling that you are missing something from not reading the other books in the series. This story was heartfelt and a truly unique story.
Author Kari Trumbo always tells a story that is detailed, intriguing and heart felt. A Penny Shines is a wonderful story about Penny and Josiah and what happens to their love due to an unfortunate incident. From the first page of this book, I was drawn into the story and could not put this book down. Kari Trumbo has a way of making the reader feel as if you are right there in the action of the story. The characters are well developed and the story line is amazing. Great read.
Hero: Josiah - Heroine: Penny 4.* : Another great story in this series that is filled with fun, love and intrigue. The story progressed steadily, has well developed characters and a fun developing plot. This story has a very happy and satisfying HEA
I love this series so far...my only complaint would be there needs to be better proof readers because there were a few errors in this otherwise lovely book.
