Re-read July 2023, because I was visiting Chatsworth House, the seat of the dukes of Devonshire!
Quick Review - Excellent writing by Scarlett Scott. - A "compromised-caught-married" plot with a twist. - The real duchy of Devonshire, including the family name of Cavendish & the seat of Chatsworth. - Grumpy, hunk of a hero who paints! - Flighty heroine who meddles! - Excellent chemistry between the two. A sweet romance that was at times heartbreaking. - Final 30% was all over the place, which was its only downside.
*A fun, quick read that I finished in one sitting!

Should I read in order? It’s probably best in order, because so many of the characters are overlapping...but the romance itself stands alone.
Basic plot: Heath is looking for a bride and can’t seem to keep his hands off Tia.
Give this a try if you want: - Victorian – 1882 - house party - widow heroine - compromised heroine - Duke hero - artist hero - instalust - he’ll carry you when you injure your foot - some other woman/other man elements - he will, ahem, warm you in the abandoned cabin when you’re cold - higher steam – 7 full scenes plus some kisses
Ages: - heroine is 25, didn’t see hero mentioned
First line: If there was one thing in the world that Tia, Lady Stokey, adored, it was parties.
My thoughts: I am really struggling with this series and I’m a bit sad. The first book just had a bunch of stuff I personally get annoyed with. The second book I enjoyed the first half, but the second half again went to a bunch of stuff I didn’t love. This one...I guess it just didn’t have much tension for me which is what I live for in romance and I ended up not really liking either main character much, so that really dwindled my enjoyment.
I think if you’re looking for a fast faced, steamy read with an angsty ending (with some elements of other man and other woman woven in) then this will work great for you!

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
Heath, the Duke of Devonshire, has kept a tight rein on his passions and desires, as a form of penance for not being in England when the women he loved lay dying. His restraint and silence have led to some such as the widow Lady Tia Stokey, viewing him as dull and boring. Heath for his part desires a bride that will not risk his heart, a bride whose comportment is very different to that of Tia’s, but one kiss changes the trajectory of both their lives.
The scandal of the century, in my eyes really wasn’t one, so I do think that component of the blurb is a misrepresentation of the plot/book. That being said what I liked about this book was that it never felt like Tia was second best, something I was worried about as the tale of Heath’s first love was revealed. The focus in this book is on Tia and Heath and their interactions and their relationship development and dramas, there is a little bit of drama towards the end coming from an outside source – a past suitor of Tia’s but it’s just a little bit of drama.
This was a nice enjoyable, one time read overall, but I don’t know, reading it straight after the previous book by the author highlighted a sense of sameness which I may have not otherwise noticed so clearly. The author is certainly good at creating couples who have good chemistry even as they clash, but it would be nice if the author changed things up when it came to the dynamics between the main characters.
I feel like I haven't read a HR in years. This book was enough to restart my interest. It was good, a good amount of steam and plot. Will check out the other books in the series.
I loved the characters names! Perfect for a romance. I liked the story but I didn't really love it and I can't figure out why. They were very passionate together and she was a worldly widow and he a Duke but it just annoyed me at times. Him searching for a wife while carrying on with her and she and an ex love and it was just not my jam. I did like the ending though and it was good. Plus it was free on KU.
This was an interesting book for me. It was not what I was expecting and the scandal of the century was one that, in my opinion, never was. I was looking forward to the scandal and how they dealt with it….they got married and that was all we heard about it. Together Heath and Tia were combustible and brooding. They each had their reasons for holding back parts of their past, but Heath took it a bit far. There was a lot of yelling and aggression, nothing physical, that really had me wanting to put him in a corner for a very long time out. Tia was charming and did things to try to bring Heath out of his funk, but her approach was more like a bull in the china shop, rather than a caring spouse.
The story was nice, but there were chances to allow secondary characters help, but it was always Heath and Tia. I enjoy the added dimension that secondary characters bring to the HEA, this story had very little of this. In the end, we did get the HEA, but it was a bit painful for me getting to it. The heat level was also surprising and while I understand that was a main contributing factor to their relationship, it did not have to be the only factor. Here again, there were chances to have other characters help them to come to their HEA and it was missed.
I am giving this a 3.5-star rating because of the missed opportunities and the heat level that caught me totally off guard and consumed the story.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This is an author I love. Her books are always full of passion and angst, and very often her heroes are besotted and faithful, even if they are cold. This one has a feisty young widow as a heroine. She's not shy or proper, she enjoys her life and had some lovers. Thank god for that. Beneath this facade though, there is a woman who was jilted by her beloved because he got another woman pregnant, and married an older and unpleasant man on the rebound. Thank god he died and so she became a merry widow. The hero is a duke, very proper, who lost his fiancee some years before and was unable to forget her. He needs a wife and is looking for a demure and proper lady, just the opposite of the heroine. The attraction between them is really strong though, so much that they start fornicating every time they are near, until they are caught in flagrante delicto, and basically forced to marry. They are both very adult and civilized and they decide to make the best with that they have, so they get married and keep on enjoying sex as much as they can. The hero is very clear and sincere to the heroine and he basically tells her she doesn't have to expect love, because his heart belongs to his dead fiancee, but of course she falls in love with him and is hirt every time he reminds her he can't ever love her. He soon realizes his feelings for her are far deeper than he would like, and since he's afraid to lose her too and to get hurt again, he tries to keep her distant, well, except when they are in bed of course. The heroine that is full of life and ideas, tries to meddle but the hero takes it very badly and she decides to leave him, at least for some time. I liked it because she isn't a drama queen and she's also very mature and civilized, I would have been far less reasonable when he kept saying that he will always love his dead fiancee. F.O. you man. As soon as she leaves he realizes he loves her and when he finds a letter from her ex fiance, now widower, asking her to meet him, he decides to go and take her back. He's jealous and angry when he sees them together and - what I didn't like at all- he gives her an ultimatum, either she goes home with him or they are finished. That's not the right thing to do if you want to win back your wife after you treated her like shit for weeks, reminding her you love another woman. This was one thing I didn't like. The other was that he decided he could be in love with the heroine because his dead fiancee would never come back anyway. That is, if his dead fiancee came back he would be with her and not with the heroine, because she's the great love of his life. I don't like this, I would have preferred if he realized he loved the heroine more than his dead fiancee and what he felt for ow was guilt and young love mixed together, but sadly it was not the case. It could have been perfect, but it was quite good all the same.
I was hoping for more. The book started off well, and I liked the hero in particular (at first). He's supposed to be a dull, staid man, but comes across as dryly humorous and down-to-earth before he marries the heroine. Basically, he seems like the antithesis of most of the angst-ridden blusterers in this genre. He's almost too patient with the, at times, irrationally stubborn h. But then (to create the conflict in the plot) he falls into "alpha-default mode." H becomes over-dramatic, jealous, and lust-driven, throwing temper tantrums that just don't fit the character initially presented. The heroine comes across as too impulsive at times, but I still don't like the way the hero intended to "punish" her (possible trigger warning; some readers are into the bondage thing, I know, but I'm not one of them). Sex scenes typically furnish WAY too much of this author's plots, and unfortunately this book is no exception. It's a pity, because I loved the couple's easy, sexy chemistry at the beginning of the book.
I enjoyed this book - quite a lot of explicit sex but the story was a good one. Heath, the Duke of Devonshire, is leading a boring life & blaming himself after his true love died while he was in Italy. After years, he has decided he must do his duty to the Dukedom & marry & present an heir. He meets a widow, Tia, Lady Stokey & though he is enticed by her; she is not the innocent, reputable bride he needs to marry.
Unable to stay away from each other, they cause a possible scandal of the century but nothing will keep Heath from claiming her as his bride. There are so many walls to be broken down between them, from their past loves to the fact that neither wants to love again because of the hurt they felt. Will Heath & Tia find their HEA or are there just too many ghosts to chase away? I highly recommend this whole series & can't wait to read the next one with Helen, Tia's sister.
How nice to finally have a romance where the leading lady isn’t a barely legal virgin, or any kind of virgin. What a switch up in themes, and so appreciated at least by this reader. Tia, Lady Stokely was an interesting character, so full of her own desire to have her way with Devonshire, the man she once thought dull.
Heath, the Duke of Devonshire was in the market for a wife, but he wanted to keep control of his emotions, because when he was young they caused him troubles. He finds that whether or not he controls his emotions, he cannot control his desire for Lady Stokely and that is bound to cause them both troubles.
This has common romance tropes, but was well done and the characters were carefully developed as was the story. Another winner for Scarlett Scott.
Enjoyed this book enormously, but did feel that the “bondage” scene was a misstep, in that…abandoning someone tied up naked (and hungry, she felt her stomach growl upon his abandonment as it meant the dinner she was headed to did not happen for several more hours) with no covering at all for an hour in a cold room in bindings that tighten when tugged but do not loosen when relaxed is genuinely dangerous. Tia was in pain from this, and not even sexy pain for those who believe in such things. Unsexy pain. Stoke up a fire, cover her in several blankets, ascertain her comfort, and do not actually be gone, and certainly not for that long. She didn’t consent to this. Just a few adjustments and some sense of like…care…would’ve made the difference.

I so enjoyed this book. It drew me from the beginning, and kept me interested to the HEA ending. Heath was a Handsome, Loyal, at most of the time, kind Hero. Tia, a strong, kind, but maybe a little pushy at times, Heroine. It was a story of their journey to find each other’s hearts. It had some steamy love scenes, adding to story. I got a little impatient, at times, waiting for them to admit that they loved each other. It can be read as a stand-alone, but better in order, because of reoccurring characters, in a very good series. I highly recommend reading this book, and whole series. I cannot wait to start the next book in this series.
I simply love this author, Scarlett Scott! She has a way of not only authoring a great romance novel but of writing about such engaging characters and their attributes. Scarlett Scott always has a theme that teaches as she relates the essence of what true love really is all about. Thank you Scarlett Scott and I will be recommending your books to my friends and family!
This novel had a lot of good moments, a lot of sweet moments; BUT it also had lot of just okay moments that really didn't bring the same warm smile to my face as the other moments had. However, even though there were times when it would lull and I would begin to ponder about choosing another novel, something would grab my attention again- just enough to reel me back in to stick by the side of this author. In the end, though, I'm glad I finished reading this novel.
I enjoyed this novel greatly and it is at a length I prefer to read, it is well written and has a good storyline. I have read the remainder of the series but not the first two, I had trouble getting into the first novel as I was uncomfortable with the fact the heroine was still married and both novels one and two were longer than I felt like reading at the time. I plan to complete them sometime in the future.
Nice story. Interesting plotline and characters. Perhaps would benefit from a bit more London glitz and reference. I got a little bored in parts, however didn't give up.
I read books 3 and 6 in this series only. I didn't feel the need to read all the books
Lady Tia is a beautiful widow and Heath a very handsome Duke. She is a free willed woman and a bit scandalize, he is known as dull and boring. But he is not, he has had his heart broken and is wary of love. This book was so much fun to read. It is witty, romantic, fun and a bit of drama, and of course hot love!! I recommend Ms. Scarlett's books always!
Tia is a Merry Widow! Heath is a lonely Duke looking for a wife! Instant attraction between 2 unlikely people! Heath enjoys the country and peace and quiet! Tia enjoys parties and beautiful gowns! The road to HEA is rocky but get there they do! It’s hilarious and wonderful!
The heroine and the writer appear to have a beard fetish and it detracted from the story. She always thought the hero was dull, but when she saw him with a beard she suddenly could not control her lust. Every intimate scene had three constants-H, h, and the beard. The H and h both had to be annoying, in order to drive the story.
I give this a 4.0 rating. It kept my interest and did not deal a lot with misunderstandings without communication. I was able to clearly imagine the characters. 'Cause that's the reason I read this stuff is to enhance my overly active imagination.
Another wonderful book by Scarlett Scott! Absolutely loved this story. Great storyline and the characters were perfect together. Always feel like I am back in that time. Can't wait to read the next book.
This book was a little sexy for me but not as I experienced that type of love with my husband for almost 57 years. I lost him 5 years ago but it brings back memories before he became ill.
I loved all the characters and read it in a day and went on to the next in the series. I love seeing what happens to all the characters even in the next book of series. I hope that this series keeps going. Great summer read.
Heath had me sighing at multiple intervals. He’s the best hero of Scott's yet and I really loved Tia. Their love story was perfectly angst ridden. I loved all the dramatic miscommunication.
I liked the easy chemistry between Tia and Heath. And I liked the fact that Heath was not judging her. He accepted her for the passionate woman that she was. They were sweet together. I have always liked H who paints the h in the nude, it,s really HOT.
After reading this book there is no doubt in my mind that Scarlett Scott is the best writer of love stories. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone.
I absolutely loved the character Tia. She was a stubborn, outspoken, sensual woman. She certainly met her match with the 'Duke of Dullness'. Be for warned this is a scorching, sexual tale. Loooved it!
Frankly, I adore Tia. She is everything I understand and found her to be a unique character. Bold, outspoken, caring and clearly assured in her desires. Heath is a wonderful offset to her. Refreshing and brilliant. Super spicy.
