Julia James

Julia lives in England with her family. Mills and Boon novels were Julia's first "grown up" books she read as a teenager ("Alongside Georgette Heyer and Daphne du Maurier."), and she's been reading them ever since.

Julia adores the English countryside ("And the Celtic countryside!"), in all its seasons, and is fascinated by all things historical, from castles to cottages. She also has a special love for the Mediterranean ("The most perfect landscape after England!") — she considers both are ideal settings for romance stories! In between writing she enjoys walking, gardening, needlework and baking "extremely gooey chocolate cakes" — and trying to stay fit!

Heroine pretends to be the OM's (hero's cousin) mistress to hide his relationship with another man and for that cousin to avoid an arranged engagement. The hero's and cousin's grandfather takes matters in his own hands and has the heroine kidnapped to the hero's private island.

Hero is upset that his grandfather stooped to illegal means to stop the heroine and he knows it's going to cost him even more to get rid of her. Heroine is livid when he finally shows up at the island. She has no other clothes and the couple waiting on her are deaf and mute.

Hero tries to buy her off with a check, then jewelry, then seduction. None of it works. Finally the hero at his wit's end, decides to treat her nicely and gives her a wardrobe of clothes. They have a week together and then the heroine finally gives in. They have a lovely interlude until the hero realizes they haven't been using contraceptives.

Heroine is mortified. Hero whisks her off to Athens to make sure she isn't pregnant already with his cousin's baby. Then he makes her wait in hotel to see if she'll be pregnant with his. The slut shaming was bad before, but it's off the charts now. When she confirms she isn't pregnant. She goes back to London. Gets an apology from hero's cousin and his lover for involving her in their mess and she goes back to work. (She's an actress and a classics scholar)

This is a typical Julia James. The hero has been scarred by a former girlfriend, so heroine gets a boatload of slut shaming. What's different is that this heroine was not a virgin, and she holds out for quite a while before succumbing to her traitorous body. Like most JJ stories, the heroine gets in a good speech. Here, she was able to tear into him several times. (Because he kept messing up.) Hero does do a lot of groveling. I thought the cousin and his lover should have done more groveling, but it was nice to see them pile on the hero as well.

Bonus points for Gramps being so old skool, he had the heroine kidnapped and drugged. Just like the vintage romances of yore.

★★★★☆ Not all of this author’s books are meant to be humorous, but this one is, and she does it with wit and charm.

Our Heroine, Leandra, is close with male friends, Chris and Demos, who are themselves in a secret, romantic relationship. Demos, banking on her loyalty, friendship, and sense of fun, asks Leandra to pose as his ‘airhead’ mistress, but only while his cousin (and Our Hero), the wealthy and powerful Theo Atrides, is visiting England.

Theo, there at the behest of his ailing Greek grandfather, Milo, who is desperate for an heir, reluctantly agrees to mention, but not push, the idea of an arranged marriage.

Theo takes one look at Leandra, who is playing her part to the hilt, clinging to Demos, and thinks he knows her angle. A logical conclusion as she is, after all, completely decked out in Demos’ diamonds, in a trollop’s dress, and having fun with the assigned role.

Milo knows he can’t rely on Theo to provide a legitimate heir due to having vowed never to marry; nevertheless, this old rogue sets up a few mendacious machinations causing Leandra to be kidnapped and transported to Theo’s isolated Greek island.

And the games begin!

For even though Theo thinks his grandsire has gone too far this time, he still tries to bribe Leandra to leave Demos in order to get her off his island and his hands - and when that doesn’t work he tries seduction.

But where did his cousin’s empty-headed mistress go?

Instead, he finds a passionate woman of integrity and intelligence, totally at odds with his previous impression. (Yes, that would also be his perception of her as chiseling gold-digger.)

But Julie James is not done with us yet. She has a few more surprises in store for us readers in Leandra’s character, giving us a surprisingly powerful storyline; plus, how she writes the end is worth the wait.

Oh yeah, I read this one a while back and wrote a scathing review which is now gone. (Thank you very much Goodreads.) I've had this happen a handful of times and thought I might have been confused. But, not this time. This one was too memorable to forget.

Hero was cringeworthy. Especially after the things he said to her when he thought she might be pregnant with his child.

I was so scarred, I never read another HP by Julia James. Not my cuppa!

Yee Gads...I just did NOT like this book. It started out fun, but as the book progressed the Hero went from being arrogant to VILE and the heroine went from strong to TSTL.. Normally, I can handle an arrogant, truly Asshat hero upfront as long as they evolve into a worthy hero. But not this time...Theo goes from bad to worse and worse and worse. The scene that really threw me over the edge was when he drags her off to a clinic to see if she is pregnant because he believes she set out to trap him.

And once you had me in your trap you couldn't lose, could you Leandra? Whatever happened you profited! If you weren't pregnant, then you would be my pampered mistress and I would shower my wealth upon you...And if it was your lucky day-or night- and you conceived, then your profit margin would be even greater! You would be financially secure for life even if I never married you..And if I did marry you - ...Well, as Mrs. Theo Atrides the world would be yours for the buying!'

Wait, but there is more... Here comes the real zinger...

or, Did you think you could hold out your hand for a cheque with enough zeroes on it to ensure that you took a trip to an abortion clinic...

I must admit I kept reading it. Very similar to people that feel compelled to rubberneck at the scene of an accident...I just couldn't help myself. But honestly, who could love someone like that?

I very rarely give a 1 star....but this was very deserving.

I usually enjoy Julia James....Just didn't like this one. Hero left me completely cold. Heroine was an idiot. As an aside, hero Theo also belongs in prison.

1) Theo tries to get rid of heroine, his cousin's mistress, so his cousin can be forced to marry some poor, pathetic Greek girl (I was so sad for that girl). Of course, hero is too busy sleeping around himself to fulfill any family obligation.

2). Theo was moralistic and self-righteous...I'm very tired of seeing this in a hero who sleeps with a lot of women, it just doesn't fit. He's ironically very disparaging about "sexual perversions"....maybe he should evaluate whether his method of using many, many women (oh, wow, one at a time), providing them jewels and then discarding them without feeling a thing for them is a sexual perversion? Then he's all ok with gay people. Totally doesn't fit the jerk walking around through most of the book. Last ditch attempt to redeem him fell flat.

3). Theo is also a criminal. Yes, his grandfather kidnapped heroine, but 1) he thinks he has the right to keep heroine on an island against her will unless she agrees to sign away her right to complain about the kidnapping and give up her relationship with his cousin in exchange for $100,000 and 2) he tells her he will just hold on to her passport while he leaves her in Athens for a pregnancy test....mor kidnapping.

4) Heroine is an idiot. Seriously, she's supposed to be intelligent and an actress but she

A) throws the check back at hero, even though his plan was to take her back and have his lawyer draw up papers for her to sign. Umm, smile and say sure, get back to London and THEN tell hero to stuff it. You've been kidnapped...you say whatever you have to so you can get off the island.

B) has unprotected sex with the hero. Since she's a virgin (with zero explanation of why she'd be so inexperienced when she's perfectly normal and healthy),, she also doesn't know how babies are made and thinks since her period is coming in a few weeks, she surely must be safe. She learned has a university degree but knows nothing about ovulation?!?! And she knows hero has slept with tons of women but they are rich actresses and opera singers so of course there is no possibility of STDs?

C) thinks she's in love with hero even though he's a total jerk to her and isn't such a great guy in general. What's to love? Clear case of sexual attraction being mistaken for love. I almost laughed when, after being insulting and verbally abusive, he was seducing her and says he's only going to make her feel good from here on out. Famous last words.

D) when in Athens for pregnancy test, he says he's keeping her passport and plans to continue to hold her captive. No objection from heroine, apparently she's still shell-shocked from learning how babies are made. Did she even try to phone the police? How about the embassy?

This felt like a jumble of obvious tropes and just didn't work.

Interesting reading ... a plot that was really popular a decade or so back ... that of the H's gay relative using h to hide his sexuality ...
I liked all the characters except for the H ... he seemed to be extra stubborn about changing his perception of h's character as JJ's H's can usually be ...
what really bugged me ... the outright criminal behavior of the H's grandfather .. I know this is fiction but I couldn't help imagining about the many women who actually face this situation; being drugged and kidnapped ... again, I know it's fiction but this is something I couldn't seem to ignore ... maybe that is why I have taken off 0.5 stars

4 Stars! ~ Leandra is very loyal to her friends. When her friends Chris and Demos ask her to pose as Demos' lover to discourage his family from pressuring him into an arranged marriage, she agrees. All she's to do is live in Demos' apartment and pretend to be a air head mistress for the duration of Demos' cousins visit in England. One look at Leandra all dolled up in a revealing gown, diamonds (on loan from Demos) and layers of makeup, and Theos figures he knows her tune. He's certain that Demos would never marry this woman, but he can certainly see her charms and that Demos would be in no hurry to part ways with her. And Leandra plays her part well, clinging to Demos and making her affections most obvious. Their ailing Greek grandfather, Milo, is anxious for an heir to the family name, and he knows that Theos has vowed never to marry so his hopes are on Demos and a beautiful Greek girl waiting patiently for him. Not happy to wait for Theos to deal with Leandra, Milo has her kidnapped and left on Theos' private island where Milo leaves it up to Theos to pay her off. Theos is furious with his grandfather and realizes how atrocious this treatment of Leandra is, even if she is a money grabbing tart. When Leandra refuses to be bought off, Theos decides to seduce her away from his cousin. He's confused by the air head he believed her to be and the intelligent and passionate woman quickly becomes.

Awesome! This is Ms. James debut and what a wonderful story. Theos allows bitterness from his past to cloud his judgement and he finds it hard to believe Leandra is as she appears, a woman of great integrity and loyalty. Leandra is a strong heroine who stands up to Theos much to his surprise. Her loyalty to Demos in keeping up the pretense, keeps their relationship based on lies. This is an intensely passionate, and powerfully emotional story. Ms. James writes a very satisfying scene at the end of the book that makes us cheer heartily for Leandra and feel deep satisfaction. Well done!

I was fairly disappointed with this one. I get that being kidnapped and held hostage by a sexy billionaire can be, well, sexy. I didn't find this one much sexy. I guess that comes down the the characters. They annoyed me.

Theo was cold and completely without emotions. There just was no getting under his skin or into his head - at least not beyond the "I don't trust women" issues he had.

Leandra was whiny and completely closed off for an unexpected adventure. Sure, it was an initial shock, and the way she was taken was creepy. I get that! But once Theo explained the how, the who, and the why - why not take it as a treat? An unexpected vacation, all expenses paid. Sun, nice weather, blue skies, lovely house, and private beach with clear water as far as you can see - color me lucky and keep me stranded for a month!

Normally I love these books, the Harlequin Tycoon's always keep me entertained for a few hours. Not this one. I was skimming parts of this one to finish as quickly as possible.

Eh keduanya emang udah saling tertarik sejak pandangan pertama, jadi gak butuh pake lama utk mereka beruhuk-uhuk ria.

Yasudlah... rating netral aja.

Theo is a Greek Adonis incarnate and has been sent to London to bring back his cousin, Demos is to Greece and make sure he marries the girl selected for Demos by family.

Demos is gay and he and his partner decide to show that he has a (fake) mistress now so he's not interested in getting married. He doesn't want to hurt his grandfather who's on deathbed and desperate need for a heir. He asks Leandra, an actress and friend, to act as his mistress.

This book has insta-lust! Acceptable as it's expected... but why the hell is Theo a douche? He's cruel, meaner than women can be, harsh, rude, arrogant, horrible and vindictive to Leandra. Who I liked in starting, but towards the end she seems as a spineless woman with no self respect.

Theo says mean and horrid things to her which I found a lot over the top! He's a loser! and Leandra just forgives him in a snap of fingers!!!

Okelah dia punya trauma, tapi dia lelaki dewasa please omongan dijaga 😒😒. Beberapa ucapan maaf dia juga repetitif dan gak to the point, beda jauh kalau dia lagi ngamuk ke Leandra ucapannya kayak lempar bom bertubi-tubi

2.9 bintang karena gak ngebosenin buat dibaca

He was an asshat of epic proportions. To the point of coming off as creepy instead of alpha. May have worked as a century old vampire - as a man in contemporary romance though? No.

Di awal rada enggak suka sama karakter Leandra Ross. C'mon, Babe! Senaif itukah? Bantu demi kebaikan sampai korbanin diri sendiri?

Theo Atrides absolutely bastard! Semua hal dinilai sama uang. Ilfeel abis sama tipe judgemental begini. Dosa apa aku dibikin istighfar berkali-kali selama baca. Novelnya nyaris sobek karena tangan berkeringat nahan makian haha.

Olah konfliknya bagus, enggak bikin boring. Rasional pula. Cukup mblenger sama opening hasrat menggebu yang tiba-tiba menyerbu. Bisa dibilang, ide novel ini cukup segar walaupun hubungan Lea-Theo masih diwarnai hal-hal klise.

Menjelang ending, impianku buat lihat Theo putus asa dan nyesel setengah mampus terlaksana! Girang banget lihat PU laki-laki menderita hahaha....

Kesannya jadi masih ada unfinished take.

2.5 stars. I have really enjoyed Julia James' Presents books for the last few years since I've rediscovered Harlequins as good escape reading. She has interesting plots and characters, always in beautiful locations, and in particular, the inner dialogue of her heroes and heroines is always intriguing, although, at times, a little over the top! But they make me smile😊. So I was excited to come across this book, her very first Presents.
The plot sounded interesting but as I read more, I disliked the H so much, especially for his verbal abuse, and for the h, to even listen to it and want to reunite with him. A couple, in my opinion, that did not deserve a HEA.
James has written more sophisticated books since and her first attempt can't be held against her. I'm just really glad I've read several of hers beforehand because if this was my first introduction to her work, it probably would have been my last.
