Winner, Best Novella, 2009 National Readers' Choice Awards Now available for the first time as a digital stand-alone novella! When vivacious Christobel Smyth is forced to attend her matchmaking sister's annual house party, she realizes that there may be more--much, much more--to brooding mill-owner John Leyden than she first supposed. Once ignited, their passion cannot be ignored, but is it enough to bridge the enormous social gulf that separates them?
As a child, Kristina Cook took her nose out of a book only long enough to take a ballet class (or five) each week. Not much has changed since then, except she’s added motherhood to the mix and now enjoys penning her own novels as much as reading everybody else’s. Before turning her hand to historical romance, Kristina did graduate work at Columbia University and wrote grant proposals for some of New York City's top cultural institutions. After the birth of her second child, she decided to finally write that novel she'd always wanted to write. The rest, as they say, is history. Kristina lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.
This story was so much fun to read. Your characters are great and the storyline just superb. Thank you for such an exciting read. Motorcars, who has heard of such, give me a coach and four any day, Danny and Debbie Scott.
This is one of those love/hate things. It takes place around the turn of the 20th century. Christobel Smyth is attending her sister’s house party and encounters a man she continually argues with, John Leyden. Each believes the other dislikes them which in turn causes them to act snarky with the other. But suddenly, they discover they’re attracted to each other (maybe even in love). But what kind of future can John give Christobel when he believes himself beneath her and she despises everything he loves. This really was a good story, with believable and frustrating angst. I honestly questioned how possible it was that these two mismatched people could be together, but it did feel right for them. They’re love scene was pretty hot, very unusual for a virgin heroine.

I found this book on Amazon via The Fussy Librarian; this is my honest review. Lots of actions (games, travels, attacks), descriptions (smells, buildings, gardens, clothing...), and feelings (not too mushy). A delightful read full of misunderstandings, impulsive thinking, stolen kisses, spur-of-the-moment sex (not quite clean but not too many details), with happy results.
Playing match maker Edith and her husband invited her sister Christobel, their mother and single friends to their house party. Hoping to fix Christobel up with a husband.
