You see the attractive stranger at the bar? They may not be what you think...
Jason Briggs' night may be about to go from bad to worse. An earlier break-up with his girlfriend was followed by an argument that ended in violence. Now, he finds himself alone among the hustle and bustle of Saturday night clubbers... And then he meets the girl. Jason is attracted by the pretty stranger, but it quickly becomes apparent she is troubled and seeking assistance. Jason offers to help, though his motives are less than chivalrous. However, there are other forces in play this night; other eyes watching, waiting, stalking... Jason's life is about to get even tougher.
Nightlife: Selected Cuts from Dark Albion, #2 is a seven-thousand word short story, originally published in the Dark Albion collection.

I was born into a world of horror... Well, not quite, but almost! To be more precise, my 'very sudden' arrival into this world came about via a broken cinema seat. It was a seat into which my heavily pregnant mother found herself wedged. Once it had collapsed beneath her bulk, the resulting chaos of attempting to free her - perhaps not surprisingly - induced a rather rapid labor. Talk about a grand entrance. I'm guessing it was something of a talking point among those present, and probably for many years after. Oh, yeah, and the film that was showing? It was The Phantom Of The Opera!
I have had a fascination with all aspects of the horror genre since my childhood, and it is a major driving force in my desire to write entertaining stories.
Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria is my first novel; It's the story of Laura Bennett, who finds everything changes on the day a beautiful and mysterious stranger first enters her life...
A novel length re-imagining of J.S. Le Fanu's original novella, Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria draws on much of the original narrative, but also introduces an array of new Characters to bring a whole new level of horror, and tragedy, to the legend of Carmilla.
The novel is co-authored by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and David Brian.
Collections of my short stories can be found in the fantasy books Dark Albion, Kaleen Rae, and The Cthulhu Child.
Jason's girlfriend has recently cheated on him. After putting up with repeated teasing from his unsympathetic friends, Jason loses his temper and gets bounced from a bar for fighting. While looking for another watering hole, Jason spots a woman. She has an amazing body and a beautiful face. Something is not quite right upstairs, but that doesn't bother Jason. As a matter of fact, this may be to his advantage. It's not intelligence that he's looking for. Jason is not a likeable guy. You kind of want to see something bad happen to him. What ensues is not for the faint of heart.
This is the second story from author David Brian's Selected Cut series. The first story can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2.... I am looking forward to the next selection!
I was provided with an ARC of this story from the author in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks.
Down on his luck after a break-up with his adulterous girlfriend and an ensuing fight with his friends, Jason Briggs just wants to call it a night. But then he spots a beautiful woman with an irresistible body. Simply booty-ful, in fact! Jason's "big head" (and all rational thought) stops functioning as his "little head" takes over. He figures he can even the score by sleeping with this mysterious woman he has encountered. Jason's about to wish he'd walked right past her and stuck with his original plan....
This is such a great, engrossing story. I read it in one sitting. I was curious to know more about this strange woman--was she some sort of an android or an alien? I'm not telling--read for yourself and find out! This one won't disappoint.
After finding out that his girlfriend cheated on him Jason heads into town with friends. But he ends up fighting with those friends and finds himself alone. He meets a sexy girl and, realizing she is vulnerable and none too bright, he decides to take advantage of her - yes, Jason is a bit of a dick. No wonder both his girlfriend and mates dumped him. Unknown to Jason he is not the only one stalking the girl, and soon they will be coming for him too. This was only a short read, but Nightlife was a fun and satisfying slice of horror. I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I found Nightlife by David Brian to be a story that at times pleased, but also unsettled and angered to varying degrees and measures. I'm still not certain that I haven't just read about a young woman being raped, and although it's only fiction, I didn't like this aspect of the story. The book starts with Jason Briggs finding himself in town alone, abandoned after a number of unhappy incidents involving his friends and (now) ex-girlfriend. During the opening few pages I began to feel sorry for Jason, I needn't have bothered. Jason is an awful human being, and I spent much of this book wishing something bad would happen to him. To be fair to David Brian, I am sure that he never wanted us to care for Jason, and they say if a story incites an emotional response in the reader that's a good thing, right? Even so, this is very much a story about a damaged young soul having been/being used and abused by unpleasant men. This made me uncomfortable. Overall, I couldn't fault the writing, and I did enjoy the second half of the story a lot. It was a decent read, but the subject matter was not for me. I received a free ARC copy of this story in exchange for a review. Next up I am reading The Boy on the Beach by the same author, and having heard good things I am looking forward to this one.
Jason feels events in his life spiraling down following a break up with his cheating girlfriend, and a fight with his friends. Now, alone in a busy city centre, Jason spots an attractive young woman who appears to be in distress. He decides to vent his frustrations on this girl, and he coerces her into following him from off the main streets, and once there he intends on having some fun at the girl's expense. But all actions have a reaction, and Jason would have done better never having got involved with the girl. She is being pursued by others, and she has troubles aplenty of her own. Jason is headed for a world of hurt. I received a copy of Nightlife in exchange for an unbiased review.
I received an ARC copy of this from the author in exchange for a review. The story's protagonist is Jason, and to be honest he is not a nice person. When he bumps into a disturbed (but attractive) young woman, he sees an opportunity - like I said, he's a doosh! However, the reason the girl is in such turmoil and distress, she is already being pursued. Jason had sought to take advantage of an unfortunate situation, but Jason is about to learn that karma is a bitch! This was a good fun read.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. Jason has been dumped by his girlfriend, and a night out with his friends ends with he and them coming to blows, and Jason then getting thrown out of the bar. Don't feel too much sympathy though; Jason is a bit of a creep. While he is looking for a fresh watering hole, he sees a pretty girl who appears to be in distress. Jason The Creep sees this as an opportunity, he will take advantage of the girl's vulnerability to have a good time at her expense. What he doesn't realize, the girl in question is already being hunted by dark forces, and he has unknowingly placed himself into a very bad situation.
I received an ARC of this shortish novella in exchange for my honest review. What starts out as a bad weekend for Jason - a break up with his cheating girlfriend, major row with mates- suddenly appears to be getting better. Jason meets a pretty, though somewhat simple girl, and he fancies his chances of getting in her panties. He persuades the girl to go with him, hopeful of finding a suitably secluded spot where he can make his play. Jason has failed to notice that others are trailing his every move. If he thinks his weekend has been bad up until now, things are about to get a lot worse.
I received a copy of this story in exchange for a review. Finding himself left alone in town following a violent row with his mates, Jason meets an attractive young woman. When she agrees to let him escort her home, Jason is delighted by what he sees as an opportunity for some 'fun.' But the woman is being hunted, and Jason too is now in danger. This was relatively short, but a fun and gruesome read.
A short story about this guy looking for trouble one night. And he sure found it! He decided to hook up with a beautiful blonde, but he made the wrong decision. I really liked the scary gore in this tale. But I'm still not sure exactly who/what that lady was. Maybe I'm just not getting it. Anyway, I still liked it and I will read more from David Brian.
