With the horrors of Chicago put down hard, Dick AKA Devil Dog, Jamie, Mel, Luis and Courtney head west, where they are hoping to re-unite with family. There's only a few problems along the way... Only a few. Rabid Cannibals, hunted by psychotic raiders and a town that's forcing a "Tithe" on travelers and a government gone wild... all before the main event... If you like a good old fashioned "Good Guys Vs. Bad Guys" fast action, and a post apocalyptic thriller, you're going to love the Devil Dog Saga. Book 2 is a nonstop roller coaster ride of action, adventure and unintended consequences.
I have to admit, I have an addiction. I'm addicted to this series and I need a fix.
I was halfway through this before I realized that Dick is the same guy who appeared at the end of Craven's The World Burns series. I almost paused this to go back and reread Hope of the World so I could refresh my memory, but I couldn't bear to pull myself away.
As I continued to read, I realized that one of the towns featured in this book also appears in The World Burns, with those characters dealing with the Devil Dog's aftermath. I'm not sure which series was written first, but the shared setting was excellently interwoven. You don't have to read this for the other series to make sense, but it provides some nice depth to both stories.
Dick has more depth and nuance than any other character I've seen in Craven's books (and I've read quite a few), and is one of the best written characters in the genre period.
Interwoven but independent plots, well written character, and the end of the world. Who could ask for more?
The desire to reunite with his ex-wife, Mary, and their daughter, Maggie, is the driving force that has Dick and his companions leaving Chicago. Dick has promised to get Jamie and her daughter, Mel, home to their family in Nebraska. Courtney and Luis have invited themselves along in hopes of making it to Texas. With the area of Chicago they are leaving somewhat under control, the group faces new and unspeakable horrors along their journey.
Craven’s second book in the Out Of The Dark series, The Devil’s Road, is a fast-paced, hard-hitting adventure rich with challenges and new characters. Dick’s character is brought face-to-face with the worst parts of his past.
This book was emotionally draining for me. I truly felt for Dick and the tortuous fate he endured. I hope book three brings him peace.
The Devil's Road continues on from Devil Dog with the group now leaving Chicago for the journey across the country to Jamie & Mel's husband's farm. As with a novel typical of this genre along the way the face several adverse circumstances not all of which are as they initially appear.
I found it to be better than the first book in the trilogy, and it was certainly entertaining following their journey. Definitely worth a look even if you were disappointed in the first book.
On the road again...edge of your seat situations as Dick & his crew try to make it to their destinations. When something scares Dick, the whole team gets worried. Interesting trip, but the last couple of chapters had me feeling serious gut-wrenching emotions. On to Out of the Dark #3 to find out what happens after this setback.
The Out OF The Dark series is one of the better Post Apocalyptic works out there. Great characters, lots of action and enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. If you ever wondered what the demise of society would feel like, you have only to read this series. I highly recommend it.
Getting them home is a trick, and wow, what an sort, ent of encounters they meet with. Poor Dick, his ‘slipping’ just makes me want to tear up. Seems he can’t catch a break. Great book, and nice crossover references to ‘The World Burns’.
This is a well written story. My problem is trying to keep Dick’s hallucinations and reality in line. My hats off to the author is being able to write this.
I liked it. The distressing, sad part is that people would become like the characters in this story, survive at all costs & lose their humanity. The main character is a very flawed human being but he still has compassion for others & wants to help. He is a good man.
This second book of the 'Devil Dog' series does not disappoint! As Dick, Jamie, Melanie and others start their long journey home out of the depths of Chicago, things seem to get a little better with every mile.
But then, once again, the remnants of a battered humanity start to interfere. Will they make it out of the city? And if they do, is Jamie's husband still alive? Is there actually family left for any of them to get back to?
The obstacles and trials that they will face are daunting, harrowing and seemingly hopeless. Will the "Devil's Road" claim them all or will Dick be able to keep them safe and find his lost family?
A great story and a fantastic read! A few editing hiccups, but they don't detract from the story at all. I can't wait for more!
Dick aka Devil Dog is finally heading out to find his family. Company on the journey includes Jamie, Mel, Luis and Courtney who also have family heading west. The group ran into a variety of trouble along the way; gangs, cannibals, and raiders for starters. Dick was also fighting his own brand of demons, some from his many tours of duty and some of his own making. He was definitely traveling the Devil’s Road. Great story, terrific characters, and Kevin Pierce is awesome as usual. I’m looking forward to more from this series.
Book #1 was good. Book #2 is great. All of Boyd Craven's stories grab you from page one and won't let you go until the last page. The end of book 2 was classic. Jamie , who Dick keeps confusing with his ex-wife ..... well it is a shame she is married to Steve.
Boyd Craven, is an amazing author. He is also a very humble and all around great guy. This is probably his darkest series to date. Right up my crazy alley
