I've never really focused on the kinds of presenters. All I've noticed is that some people are good at presentations; others not so much. This book made me realize the different areas of focus in a presentation. A good read for anyone looking to tailor their presentations based on their persona.
Note: I received a free copy from the publisher. Views are my own.
This book develops 16 personality types for presenters, and then applies them to four quadrants of presenting: exploration, sharing, response, and durability. The personas are fun, like a horoscope, producing self-congratulatory categories like: the activator, the advocator, the befriender, the performer, the producer, the scholar, and so on. But the weakness of the book is that all the advice centers on the four areas and those are too vague and general to offer much real help in creating better speeches or delivering them in more compelling ways. To be told that your "trap" is, say, too much prep -- or too little -- doesn't really put you in a strong position when you're standing center stage and the audience is waiting for you to begin.
This is a quick and inspiring book to help any speaker from novice to professional. It begins with an assessment survey, so you can determine what time of speaker you are (I’m a Liberator). You then read that section to learn about your strengths and areas to improve upon. The book is also chock full of tips and techniques to improve your speaking. I love all of the free videos and resources that are included.
The authors of this book did a wonderful presentation of different presentation personas every person may full into. At the start you will take an assessment to determine what persona you have. After that you can dive right into the part of the book which discusses you persona.
You don't have to read the book in its entirety to get what is relevant to you. You may do so if you are interested enough to know how other persona should go about their challenges or just knowing their strengths.
The book is also written in a style that is very conversational. You may feel as if you are being coached.
In this book, Scott Schwertly and Sunday Mancini, explain how to use their new methodology in assessing the communication style presenters through a personality system. Badge assigns you a personality type, which then lays down how how you prepare for and deliver a presentation based on your characteristics and traits. The Badge system identifies your strengths and opportunities, and provides with practical tips to improve on the areas that are lacking.
Not many books tailor a development plan that is suitable for who you are, most simply provide generalizes tips that may or may not fit your personality. What's your presentation persona? tells what you are already good at and how to leverage it, but also what your shortfalls are and how to address them.
