Zoey

Turning thirty is overrated. Who said you had to be married with a fabulous career and three kids? I had a great life. Single, freedom to do whatever I please, and best of all, stay home on a Friday night in my sweats, eating pizza while listening to the best of the ’80s.

I’m fine.

Drew

When a woman says she’s fine, she’s not fine. Zoey had it all. Stunning looks, ambition, the whole package. Then he fucked her up. He broke her.

And now I’m left picking up the pieces… again.

Zoey Richards, strong-willed and driven, settled on the geeky struggling med student to share her apartment with, not the perfect-in-every-way stud who would just distract her and undoubtedly break her heart.

When her ex comes back into the picture, Zoey seeks revenge and enlists her roommate’s help. All Zoey and Drew need to do is pretend to be a couple for one night. But one night can change everything. Refusing to break their “roomie code,” and in an effort to deny their feelings for each other, a war erupts between Zoey and Drew.

She lives in the past; he, for the future. If opposites attract, will these two gamble their friendship for a chance at love?

I decided to read this book because it was free on Amazon. The blurb sounded like something I'd enjoy - friends to lovers is a favorite of mine. It was at times sweet and humorous. But overall I felt like the idea of this story was great, but the execution was off.

The heroine was extremely hard to like. She really had no redeeming qualities. And both MCs were pretty flat and one dimensional. You don't really get to see them as the great friends they claim to be as the story focuses more on them not speaking to each other because of miscommunications once they realize they feel more towards one another.

The main reason I am not rating this any higher than 2 stars is because the grammar and editing were horrible. There were so many typos and the tense was constantly changing from past to present, sometimes within the same sentence.

Maybe if this was edited better, it would have been a semi-decent read.

This was a 3 star read until the last 80%....then it tanked. Almost like the author didn't know how to bring them together so she adds a 6 month separation to give them perspective. But that perspective...must've been all off page. They come back together for a funeral and admit they love each other but the timing isn't right. So it's followed by another separation of indeterminate time and no explanation of communication or interaction, she's just returning again and they do the whole ILY and fade to black, end of story.

***(o_O)***
Mind. Blown.

The H, typical man-whore. The twist...he used to be a bit dumpy and out of shape while the h was a beauty queen. But don't worry, that's just the prologue. By chapter one, he's gorgeous and she's a bit dumpy and out of shape because of a breakup with a guy who cheated with her bestie and gave her chlamydia...the bestie that is.

The h...so super fucking annoying I almost DNFd in the first 30 pages. But, this is a BR with the sis-in-law who has the same name as the h, so that's not gonna happen ;) The annoying part...the h is an 80s freak. Now, I don't know about you, but when a 20-something is into the 80s...to me that's an author's age showing through the writing. With such gems as the one below...you'll see what I mean.
---
But what if this is my happy place? And it’s no longer the time I went to that Madonna concert and met that cute boy who danced to “Like a Virgin” with me.
---

But, I digress.

The real problem was the ending. I understood the push pull, the weird sex-but-not-sex scene between the H/h, the OW/OM, but the miscommunication, or rather lack there of, I don't have time for that. I mean, what was in her goodbye letter? Why didn't they read the cues the other put out there like fucking NEON SIGNS???

So yeah, drama with no purpose leaves me at 2 stars.

Oh, lets not forget the shameless plugging of another book by this author within the text of this book. Just...bad form.

SG Ladies, let me quote the H:
“Yes.” I act confidently. “But it’s different for a male. The whole sex thing. It doesn’t matter how many women we sleep with.”

Safety:
OW attempted BJ to start off, but that fails. OM off page sex scene that disturbs the H...then no OW/OM until separation. Then there's an OW/OM for each without an explanation of sex or no sex, but a comment from the H makes you think he was faithful after the time they finally had sex and she left the next day. But I'm not sure and not even sure it matters. I don't see this as a SG kinda book.

Meh.
That's how I felt throughout this book.
Just meh.

While I do love a dual POV, I don't particularly enjoy reading the same scenes rewritten through the other MCs viewpoint. There was quite a bit of that in this book. And, I really wasn't impressed with the way this book wrapped up.

This started out so good! I loved the idea behind the story and am a huge fan of friends to lovers. If only the story had stayed on that track...

Somewhere along the line things shifted and I didn't really care for the way he acted. She was just as frustrating when she was considering taking back her cheating ex RIGHT after saying she wasn't an idiot and would never do that!

I hated that all the problems started with not saying what they were thinking right after they said to themselves that they would just cause cause unnecessary drama.

So he's a nerd when she takes him on as a roommate and she's not attracted to him. He gets fit and hot and they are still just platonic. This part I loved because she didn't just start changing her mind just because he was hot now.

As many issues as I had, I still liked it enough and it was what I needed that day.

Triggers and one spoiler....

A cute premise... however, the execution fell flat for me. I was stuck at dr appts and such and only had this one loaded up on my kindle to read....otherwise, it probably would have been a DNF for me.

This book really needs a solid proofer/edit/copy reader, the errors detract from the enjoyment factor.

2 stars for me.

Zoey and Drew are roommates. Zoey picked Drew as her roomie because he was a geek and she didn't have to worry about ever falling for him. Fast forward 4 years, Drew and Zoey are in a comfortable roomie relationship. Zoey is struggling though, a painful break-up has left her a shadow of her former self. Drew, being a good roomie and friend, tries to help Zoey find her spark again. But, they just might stumble into something more, much more.

This book started off great! It made me laugh and I loved the quirkiness of the story. But, it quickly went down hill when Zoey's ex-boyfriend comes back into the picture. She convinces Drew to act like her boyfriend and make her ex jealous. Drew realizes he has true feelings for Zoey, but then things get muddled between them. I just didn't buy it. I didn't feel a real spark between Drew and Zoey. And there first sexual encounter was one of the oddest I have ever read. Zoey is a hard character to like, she really has no redeeming qualities and I didn't understand what Drew saw in her. And the authors plug about her previous book, #Jerk, throughout became a little irritating. This book just didn't work for me.

Review by Lisa Kane

Zoe is looking for a new room mate. Her last one up'd and moved in with her boyfriend, and Zoe is left covering her unpaid rent. She's decided a guy for a room mate would have less drama. So she starts the interview process. But she's learned from her mistakes from past losers that she's been involved with and no matter how cute the guy is, she's looking for stable.

When nerdy, slightly overweight med student, Andrew Baldwin interviews Zoe decides to let the gorgeous guy she wants to room with, and goes with Andrew. He's stable and it should work out.

Fast forward four years. Andrew is now known as Drew, is built like a god and he's still rooming with Zoe. Things have really changed. Zoe is now about to hit 30, her career isn't really going anywhere and she just broke things off with her latest loser boyfriend, Jess. She's depressed and has lost her self confidance because of her cheating ex and she's taking up permanent residency on the couch. And did I mention that she's packing on the pounds too?

Drew is serious about his medical career and busts his butt taking on extra shifts. But he plays just as hard. One night stands come through the apartment on a regular basis. Zoe doesn't mind-his cast offs try to keep things moving along and always seem to want to make a powerhouse breakfast that impresses the next morning. That suits Zoe fine, even though Drew is less than thrilled about it.

Drew tries to get Zoe out of her funk. He can't stand to see her hurting. They've been best friends for four years and if something hurts her, then it hurts him too. But lately, he's become even more aware of Zoe as a woman and not just a roommate. But he's not about to ruin things between them.

We were roomies. There is a code of conduct that is attached to that label. We aren't allowed to think of each other in any way aside from friends, let alone entertain sexual thoughts.
And I'll be damned if I break the code. I don't break rules. They are in place for a reason. They are in place for a reason. To prevent shit from happening. To avoid life being all fucked up because somewhere along the line you thought with your dick instead of your head.

But things get even more complicated after a kiss. Not just any kiss but a kiss to end all kisses. Add in Zoe seeing Jess at her friend's wedding and things are really going to get complicated. Zoe comes up with the brainy idea of pretending Drew is her boyfriend and rubbing it in Jess' face. Zoe doesn't seem to realize how that will screw things up for her and Drew.

Things start to get really angsty at this point and I have to admit, Zoe frustrated me beyond belief. She can be selfish and spoiled and a brat. Drew is a great guy but for every step Zoe moves forward, she takes two back. By the end of the book I was just about done with her. She is her own worst enemy. The writing for Roomie Wars is very good, and that's what kept me reading.

When Zoey first put out an ad for a roommate , she wanted a male as she needed someone who wouldn't cause a lot of drama. It came down to two contestants - Mr. Blue Eyes -Sex God Liam and Andrew - The Geeky Med Student. Zoey chose Andrew as she decided that there wouldn't be any chance of romantic feelings between the two. I have to admit , I did hope that we would have seen a bit more of Liam or at least a cameo later down the track in the book. The book then jumps five years in the future and Zoey is nearing thirty and her life isn't going as she had planned it as she has been in a funk since she caught her now ex-boyfriend Jess sleeping with her friend. Andrew on the other hand is now a sexy doctor after going on a health kick and working out , he has now dropped the "An" in front of his name and no longer looks like the nerdy guy who moved into the apartment five years ago. In fact , we are now seeing some sparks fly. The rest of the novel is tension and unresolved romantic feelings between Drew and Zoey and then what will happen though when Zoey is offered the job role of a lifetime ? Will she take it and live HEA or will the job cause a rift between the two friends causing a major fallout.

Check out this month's issue of "Roomie Wars" by Kat. T. Masen to find out the ending of the Zoey and Drew debacle.

Okay, English is not my first language. Let 's begin.

What the actual fuck did i just read? I am going to leave some highlights of the book that I have some thoughts about.

“Females were more likely to move in with a guy based on a spontaneous moment.Men, they stand their ground for as long as they can”

First of all, I have an ick? I think that’s the word, for when I read “female” when used to refer to a woman or a girl. Just no. no. And this is coming from a writer who is a woman¿

“I will take that over girly drama any day”

This is mentioned when she is talking about how men don’t know how to aim while going to the bathroom. I would like to say: pick me, choose me, love me!

“Woman we’re nothing but a complicated species who walked on this earth to make our lives miserable”

Excuse me? excuse here? what?

“Argh, I hate weddings. I think every man hates them. Maybe the groom likes them, but that’s because it guarantees him pussy for life”

what THE FUCK? This man kept becoming more and more toxic as I read. As well as annoying.

“”
“Okay, shit. You need to tell me everything, Zoey. We’re talking about an STD here. It’s not only about you and me, my job… fuck.” My words choke out with my head spinning out of control. What about my patients? No, it’s okay. I’ve always tested myself regularly and have been clean. Zoey needs to be honest and tell me exactly what happened between us.”

“Well, fucking say it,” I yell, frustrated and irate. “Do you not understand the severity of the situation?”

“Don’t yell at me,” she cries in a panic. “I didn’t know. And I tried to stop you, but you forced yourself on me.”

“”

this whole scene. just no. Please erase it from my brain. with bleach. and Then proceed to give me a gun to shoot myself in my face.

i have more of these, and they just became worse and worse as it kept going.

this is just. I don't know how to say it. it’s fucking horrible. he is horrible. This book is annoying, as well as him. The only good thing about this book is the slight character development that we got from her. that’s it.

Okay here it goes.

Would i recommend it? FUCK NO.

don’t read this book. first book from 2022, and i already want to drink bleach.

Speechless

This is a new to me author and I am in love. I loved the story and her wording.
It’s the only thing I can think about, now that there’s this possibility of it being taken away from me. I want nothing more than to pee on that stick, see the two blue lines, and feel the pure joy that many women have told me they experienced. I want to attend an ultrasound, see and hear my baby’s first heartbeat. I want that first kick. To have weird cravings and eat pickles with ice cream at three-o’clock in the morning. I want to go into labor, scream my lungs out, all the while blaming my husband that it was all his fault, and march on over to the operating room for a quick snip. I want to be a mother. And that feeling alone is what hurts the most. That it may never be. Granted, I know there are other options, but..

That is a quote from the book and just states how many women feel. This is just one quote to show you that she has a way if writing that just speaks to you about some part of your life you can relate to. I can't wait to read wedding wars!!!

Roomie Wars is an roommate (ofcourse) story between Zoey and Drew. Their attraction to each other is definitely in the air. The 80's theme was great to read. I love the books of Kat. Her writing style is always unexpected and I'm looking forward to her next book.

I wasn’t exactly sure what I was getting into with Roomie Wars. I thought I was going to get a funny romance, I was not expecting the emotional roller-coaster that Kat T. Masen took us on in this book!

We meet Zoey who’s on a search for a new roommate, and when she picks Andrew as her new roommate, she sees him as safe. Flash forward four years, and these two are best friends and inseparable. They have their rules/code and are each others person. Zoey and Drew have changed so much since that day he became her roommate. Drew is no longer the dorky guy wearing the Spongebob t-shirt, and Zoey isn’t the girl who was up for anything. A broken heart can do that to a girl. Zoey knows she needs to make a change in her life, but it isn’t until a near death experience that she finally decides to take the plunge.

Things between these two get awkward, and they both push it aside. It’s aggravating at times watching them both play off the feelings you can see developing between them. Everyone can see that it’s no longer a roomie, brother/sister, best friend relationship between them, but neither of them will admit it. They push each other, and they both do some really stupid things and end up hurting each other. When Zoey’s friend gets married, and she makes a dumb decision, I was like OMG YES they are finally going to realize they are meant for one another, but things didn’t really work out that way, and instead things got even more strained for them. I felt for Drew, but at the same time, I wanted to strangle him for being so stubborn and not talking to Zoey. If he would have been and not run away, maybe things would have worked out differently for these two.

I did like how their story ended, they both needed to do a lot of growing up and needed to find themselves before they could really be with each other. Timing was never right for them, but how things were left between them the first time was NOT ok with me. Both Zoey and Drew grew up a lot in this book. Zoey went from not confident and not really knowing what she wanted, to a strong and confident woman, and Drew grew out of his immature ways and became a guy who went after what he wanted. It took them a long time to get where they needed to be, and the ending was beautiful, but it was too short for my liking. I am excited to jump into Wedding Wars to see what’s next for them though, as I really did enjoy Zoey and Drew’s story!

So why the 3 1/2 stars you ask? I wasn’t a fan of how Drew made Zoey feel about herself in this book in the beginning. He didn’t help with her self-esteem issues at all and I think at times he added to them. I also think at times the way both of them dealt with the problems was at times childish and it turned me off of the story at times. I did adore them but sometimes I really wanted to strangle them. I am definitely looking forward to the continuation of their story though and will be one-clicking as soon as I finish this review!

This was my first Kat T. Masen novel and Roomie Wars sounded like a fun read based on the blurb, but it just didn’t work for me. I didn’t connect with Zoey (other than she’s a book lover) or Drew at all, and honestly these two act more like angsty teens that late twenties/early thirty somethings.

I would really have liked to have seen Drew and Zoey interacting as roommates (the few short flash back instances were fun), but most of the story centered on them not even talking to each other because they completely lack communication skills and are avoiding each other thinking the other won’t reciprocate their newly formed “I think of you as more” feelings.

I don’t understand Zoey’s and Drew’s reactions or interactions at all. You’d think that two supposed BFF roomies for the past four years would be better able to communicate. I’m not sure how anyone could put up with Zoey’s slobish ways (yeah we’re told she had a rough break-up with a total jerk but come on…) or manwhore Drew’s revolving door.

There just too much angsty drama and failure to communicate happening in Roomie Wars that just left me irritated. Honestly the two people in the prologue: Zoey the architecture student and Andrew the nerdy med student sound like two characters I’d rather read about then the Zoey and Drew we got in the story.

Nitpicky notes: typos/wrong words and changing tenses that were irksome to read.

The characters were not consistent, especially the man love interest. A 24 year-old virgin turning into a man whore with in 4 years, and then all the sudden he is back to monogamy... the reasoning didn't make sense, it seemed mostly because that was what the author wanted in the plot.

One thing I did like was the world development in this story. Most romances have little to no world development. The supporting characters were interesting as well.

The romance didn't inspire me. One reason I am reading these books is to open my mind to other e people's views and experiences that I will never have because they don't align with my truth. So in all honesty, the casual sex and bringing home random people lowers my respect for a character. If the character has been abused, or is depressed, or has a reason to need to cope with life by living this kind of lifestyle, I can still enjoy a story, but I didn't find myself caring about the characters as real people.

Actually there isn't a lot of sex scenes, but the overall vibe was not loving, it was much more lustful, and not really sexy at all.

The reasons for the romantic interests to be together.... and then apart... didn't really flow and didn't feel realistic. This story felt like a plot driven story, not a character driven story. There were also some typos that were distracting. Just didn't enjoy this one.

We have Zoey who is eccentric and prefers the 80's over present day. I can totally relate since I love the 90's. She has a roommate name Drew, who goes from geek to hottie!! The first few chapters of the story I really enjoyed but as the story progressed it just fell apart for me. I lost interest in reading. The back and forth was so annoying!! They have been best friends for 4 years and I understand they didn't want to cross the line but come on!! They were both attracted to each other yet didn't want to tell the other one how they really felt. They are supposed to be in their 30's but acted like teenagers! The first time they get together was not what I was expecting at all! I had to re read that part over again. Even after this happened they still couldn't tell each other how they felt!! So annoying!!!! When they finally do come to their senses I had pretty much checked out of the story. The writing was good and the story line had a lot of potential but it just didn't work for me at all. Who knows this could be a 5 star read for you so give it a shot!

Roommate stories are on the tick list for me. It's my kind of book. This one was a little different from the usual because the sexual tension isn't there at the start. The main characters have lived together for a while. They already know each other bad habits.

Zoey is about to turn 30 and has fallen into a comfortable rut. Too much pizza, comfortable clothes and staying in have become normal.

Drew, on the other hand, has been a health fanatic. Good food and gym time has transformed him into a ladies man. He likes to go out partying, and date easy women.

They disagree about most things, but their friendship works. They support each other and are willing to compromise.

This book has some quick wit and embarrassing accidents. It's about accepting the one you love for who they are. 4 stars out of 5.

Good read

This was a really good book, I found it to be a light hearted read; that had some serious moments. It was kinda funny at times, and I loved the easy natural relationship and banter, between Drew and Zoey (not that they didn't have their grrrrr moments). The book is about Zoey and Drew's life as roommate's with all the trials and tribulations over the years. It's definitely worth the read.

This was frustrating and annoying to read! Both characters were stupid and the lack of communication between them was unnecessary and annoying. The female MC, Zoey, was stupid and petty. Nothing memorable about this book.

I'm a sucker for Room Mate books, and I absolutely loved this one. Zoey and Drew are room mates who have a really wonderful friendship and when things started to change in their minds I was really excited to see how their story would play out.

It certainly didn't go the way I expected, but I loved every second of their story, even if it was frustrating as all get out at times. I would've liked a little bit more of them, BUT there are two books after this, so that's going to give me my fix of their story which will be great. I will be diving into the next book today, can't wait!

The dynamic between these two is very interesting, given that they're two totally different people. Zoey is stuck in a rut, and Drew just doesn't realise whats in front of him. And they do not communicate well about their feelings towards each other. Which all leads to the surprising way the story goes at the end.

Can't wait to read more of these two, bring on book two!

I’m kind of in between with this book. I liked but at the same time it was very meh. I was expecting more, I guess. Zoey was very immature and how she couldn’t see that Jess was a pos was unbelievable. She claimed to be such an independent and smart woman and fell for the worst of them. Drew was actually pretty great, he was toxic sometimes and had some anger issues but at least he acted his age.
Anyway, this just wasn’t it for me. I borrowed the box set from Kindle Unlimited but I just realized that the three books in it are about these same characters, I thought it was going to be about secondary characters, but there wasn’t any in the story, not ones worth their own book I guess.
I’ll keep reading though because that’s just how I am. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I really enjoyed these characters I thought they were adorable yet frustrating. I loved their chemistry and the journey they took to get together. I giggled a lot and loved Zoey's taste in music and movies, I connected to her a lot and her love of pineapples, I have a wooden one in my office that sits on my bookshelf. This was my first book from Kat and I know I will be reading more of her in the future.

I was wary to read this as there are so many negative reviews. However, like most things, you can’t please everyone.

I really loved this book. For me, it just got better the more I read. There were times I just wanted to shake both Zoey and Drew as they just wouldn’t talk to each other about their feelings! When they started off as roommates they created a list of rules, so maybe this was one of the reasons for holding back?

When Zoey’s ex came back on the scene I hated him, what an arrogant ass. So typical of blaming others for their own shortcomings.

This book had a bit of everything although for a book by Kat, it was low on steam, but this didn’t distract from the story. I even had a little cry near end as I was so invested in it. The the next breath I was laughing!

Zoey Richards is an architect looking for a roommate, she passes on the hottie for the nerd. Fast forward 4 yrs and now the nerd, Drew Baldwin, has transformed himself into a hottie, while she went from hottie to letting herself go after a bad break up.

What we get is chapter after chapter of two inept people afraid to realize their feelings, their attraction, their lust to one another. While this book held promise the annoying way these too acted to one another bored me, I struggled chapter to chapter. I didn't connect with either Zoey or Drew. I felt no connection between the two. It was more sibling angst then steamy roommates unrealized.

Zoey lacked appeal for me. She harbored feelings for a deadbeat boyfriend who wronged her and worried about him. She also was a follower at work, never stepping up. Drew was a doctor. He also held no charm for me. A man whore, indecisive and combative. I just couldn't see these two as lovers.

It was an OK read and for that, I give it 2.5-3 stars. I would pass on this for one of the other roommate romance books out there.

Such a great read. Zoey needs a new
roommate and fast. In walks Drew,
and his is exactly what Zoey is looking
for. She needs safe and Drew is safe.

Years pass, and relationships, and hook
ups, for the both of them, until one
kiss changes it all.

I felt like I was in this book with these
2 characters and not just reading about
them. Drew knew what Zoey needed
before she did. Sometimes you come
across a great book where the characters
just belong together. This was one of
those books.

I loved Zoey's antics, and I loved Drews
transformation. But what I loved most
that was in the end Drew was always
there. Always.

I rarely read novellas, but the continuation
of their story is a novella called Wedding
Wars. I will not miss this!! More Drew, please.

Wow this was an amazing book! I have not really ever dived into a roommate book for the simple fact it’s almost cliché on how the story plot will go. Not this time! Kat T. Masen has taken the whole roommates falling in love to a different level. This book has humor, suspense, duh moments, and romance. I swear a few times I just wanted to reach into this book and give both Drew and Zoey a smack in the back of their heads. Then when they finally did realize what was going on I wanted to give them that ‘should of had a V8’ forehead smack. Awesome Awesome Awesome Book!

I am so irritated!! This started off really well but then started heading South very quickly.
The roommates never admit to their feelings. Zoey up and leaves for a year. Then everything is all I love you's when she's back.
It just frustrated me so much. There could've been such an amazing love story but it just fizzled out. Pity

Not my cup of tea

Well. I wanted to like this book and I did until drunken Drew entered the scene. Not only that but I didn't like Drew at all. He was short with Zoey, rude almost all the time, and so egotistical.
And Zoey. Talk about a woman lost. No idea what she wants. No idea who she even is.
These characters mimic real life and that's this books only saving grace.
