Here is the unforgettable story of a woman who returns to her small hometown in the South--and finds that the sins of her past are right where she left them. Never. Sunny Chandler always said she'd never go back to the tiny town where she grew up. It was just three years ago that she was at the center of a notorious scandal--and the good folks of Latham Green, Louisiana, made it clear they'd never let her forget it. So Sunny packed up and headed for New Orleans, and now she wouldn't give up city life for the world. But when she's invited to her best friend's wedding, Sunny has no choice but to go home. And with her return come the whispers...the looks...the rumors she tried to escape. It doesn't take Sunny long to see that Latham Green has nothing new to offer. Except maybe Ty Beaumont. The moment Ty and Sunny first meet at a party, he can see she's no ordinary woman. With her dazzling hair, and eyes the color of gold, she's a flesh-and-blood fantasy--and Ty vows he'll have her in his bed before the week is out. Yet even when he turns on his southern charm, Sunny makes it clear she's not interested. Sure, a night with Ty would be wilder than BourbonStreet at Mardi Gras. But Sunny's not in town to become some good ol' boy's latest conquest, no matter how sexy he is. Little does she know that Ty isn't used to taking no for an answer--and he isn't about to start now. Soon what began as an innocent flirtation becomes a tantalizingly slow, skillfully deliberate, and overwhelmingly seductive pursuit that even Sunny finds hard to resist. But resist him she will. For Sunny is harboring an agonizing secret--the painful truth of why she left Latham Green the way she did. What she really needs now is a friend--and that's when she discovers there may be more to Ty Beaumont than meets the eye. Despite his roguish facade, Sunny comes to see he has a heart of gold. Still, she doesn't know if she can trust another person with her secret heartbreak--not even the one man who may be able to heal it.

I sort of know what to expect with a SB book that is 30 years old. Yes, he was a bit of a dick. Totally alpha, in your face male. Sunny left town 3 years previously and has never returned until now. She returned to be Maid of honor at her best friend's wedding.
Ty! Bit of jerk. He sees her, he wants her and he usually gets his way.
Would have loved an epilogue but, there you go, I didn't get it.
LMAO. Even the cover of the original should tell the story. Totally dated, of course. Panty hose. No cellphones.
I used to live for when the next episode of Dynasty would be on the TV. This is the original, not the rerun.
Ty, in the book, is blonde but, what the heck, Tom Selleck is the original 80's hairy chested throwback.
Her newer books are SO DIFFERENT from these cheesy books from 30 years go. But I guess an author has to start someplace. Fingers crossed I get her new on on Netgalley. It is being released this summer.
I doubt I have many more of her books to read. Must check and see what number I am up to now.
By no means is this meant to be a literary masterpiece, and having been written in 1986 it is a tad old school. Sunny Chandler and Sherif Ty Beaumont. Are these two meant to be? The Sheriff makes a wager with his best mate that he will successfully bed Sunny within a week - when she is due to return to New Orleans. Will there be a happy ever after? The author states this is her favourite book yet! Another reviewer posted the original cover in a review - it's absolute gold. This is light fluff and I read it with that precise intention.
An oldie, over 3o years old, shows its' age in some ways but not enough to distract from a sensual, sexy romance. Sunny Chandler left Latham Green, Louisiana three years ago after a scandal the town is still talking about, vowing never to return. Never say never. Sunny is back for her best friend's wedding. When Sunny meets Ty Beaumont, the new Sheriff of Latham Green, sparks fly and so do the rumors.
Sunny Chandler's Return by Sandra Brown is a novel that follows Sunny Chandler who left her hometown of Latham Green, Louisiana after a scandal involving her wedding. She returns for a friend's wedding. She is forced to deal with the gossip about unresolved emotions tied to her past. The novel includes themes of forgiveness, self-acceptance, and finding love in unexpected places.
I am terrible not reading what a book is about and grab it. I detest romance. This is romance. It is sloggish. The flirting of Ty Beaumont is dumb at best. Short book. Predictable and eh at best. I usually love Sandra Brown’s books. Not this one!
(I'm trying my best to be fair with this review, so please be patient with me!)
I really disliked this book. Here's why:
1. Sunny was stiff, annoying, and way to busy covering up truths that had no business being secret. I felt very little sympathy for her. Oh, and my own personal pet peeve, she did a whole lot of saying no when we all knew it wasn't going to take much to get her to yes. No means no!
2. Ty was rude, pushy, and completely ran over Sunny's wishes in almost every situation. Way to stalkerish for me! And for every time she said no, he'd bully her into a yes.
3. The plot had me rolling my eyes A LOT. The bet and the one week time frame were intriguing and I couldn't wait to see how a love might blossom under constraints such as these. Well, how about our hero bully the heroine into a relationship, be crude with her, never take no as an answer, and rub her failed wedding (that she's infamous for in their small town) in her face a few times? Now, why would that work?! And in a week, no less!! And let's not forget the reason Sunny has never told anybody why she called off her wedding -- really? Yeah, I just couldn't lose my brain long enough to buy that.
In the last chapter, Ty says this to Sunny after insisting she WILL marry him, "I know you are resistant to the idea right now. You wouldn't recognize what is good and right for you if it came up and bit you. But after you've given it some thought, you'll come around." This is the way he pretty much treats her for the whole book.
So, if I hated this book so much, why am I giving it 3 stars? Mainly because the writing was ok and I know some people enjoy this type of hero/heroine combination. I'm just not one of them.
for me, I visualize SUNNY’S CHANDLER'S RETURN as a fun-filled fantasy that takes place before my eyes...yeah I’m there. Personally, my heart speaks expressively to my head to me through N old school song…” if loving U is wrong then I don’t wanna be right...”If ya cant loose your self n a harmless fantasy, in a world, a time, place that’s set aside created for U to relax & enjoy then...What...gives?
At my particular time, I choose to unwind & enjoy my inner Fantasy that just happen to be a Read, also within that Read was my sexy hero... TY he held my attention within the story. By the way I was totally diggin’ on the Audio book...the flow had me in the zone, so checkout the Audio book. ladies or if there R any guys lurking .fellas U too! Audio can be a whole new world! I gotta say in the words of my teenager,” it was SICK it was magic...loved it!”
Evidently, its crystale clear , I have nooo inhibition going back, to unearth treasures through the sands of time or L@@k for them (I’m a bit of an adventurous.welllaaaaaaa just a bitsy degree.teheee!) all for the cause of my Promised reading pleasures. I clearly see some of Ms.Brown Jewels, pieces from Yesteryear (delicious distraction) exquisite gems that are never out of fashion. They definitely are unique. They sparkle & shine nicely. Kinda like matching jewels with that favorite little black dress. Where ever precisely, the use of the old adage holds true, Art imitates life, as doe’s life Art. For me, I have a thing for a hero riding dangerously on the edge. For many others, Ty may well be that problematic alpha guy, but let me seee.for me hmmm...Notttttt!
Furthermore not only was he dag-gone cute he was a turn on..: O) TY didn’t stutter or bite his tongue…He said what he said& meant what he said... ((giggle)) I can’t fake the funk...I Iloveeeeed it! I enjoyed the hero & the heroine in action...Woweeeee talking about oooooooh the drama...teeheee..! Sunny didn’t need some Mr. henpecked Winnee.. Ty was the Right man for her, strong, virile more important he was a danger to her sensibilities. ((heee...devilish laugh made by ruby...in the back ground))...He gave it to her good...((yeahh.heee)) Sunny was a big girl she could dish it as well as take it but in the end subsequently they both proved themselves being mere mortal. In so doing they lost there hearts to love...hmm...**sigh** (fist pump in the air…yesss)!
Sunny is one of my many idea Heroines she was a bit of a *futuristic trail blazers* she embodied the whole ideology persona “I’AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROARRRRRR" & Walked the walk therefore talked the talk. She didn’t look for a sugar daddy, she had a idea, a dream she went away regrouped venture out in that sea of water called a man’s World. I see Sunny having the mind of one of the chararisitcs of so called southern bell. She was the type that probably could act like a lady of high social esteem but...oooh don’t throw caution to the wind cause believe U me *possible* hear me when I say, she may have a knife or gun scrapped to her stockings & garters. I recalled, back in the day …my Mom did. Frankly, she felt & so, did her kids that it was quite the norm..; O) She could handle Ty.If he was that much of a turn off to her she could very well do something about it but ooh no! I feel they felt each others vibes.**English accent** (“blimey bit of a drama queen, that Sunny she was..”:) Sunny was the type of woman to make a big fuss, she was gonna go kicking a screaming.., she probably feared falling in love as well... She was feelin' Ty as much as he was feelin her. I think Ms.Brown formula worked perfect for the story. Lastly I‘ve gotta say.., "I’m NOT mad at cha'!" Sunny for NOT revealing why she didn’t marry that Jerk. Ewwww...& that so called BF did Sunny a big old favor ,Sunny should be grateful ..thanks for looking out BF...wow talkin’ about nasty sloppy leftovers I should never say the least!
L@@k,more importantly the writer revealed a heroine /Sunny a Woman of great substance. She thought just as HIGHLY of her self through the pain & hurt as well, as any MAN him self would feel. Society is program to think...oooh she'll forgive take him back. A woman’s Pride, self worth is far equal to any mans! That’s not such a stretch to think.
Ms. Brown hammered that point eloquently in her own way for me. When given the choice or situation I believe a woman thinks highly of herself could & would do what SUNNY did. We have our pride... L@@k Sunny was a *strong* southern refine beauty, nooooooo Not a Scarlet type but not ur average women. She had a lot of white hot burning fire rooted inside her; it was Equal to TY’s wicked hotttness. For she’s a woman before her time...Women like her on any given day or time is by far wicked challenge to the hero. A real man would be way more comfortable to happbee with his masculinity i say simply experiencing a erotic time of his life. What man wouldn’t she a strong alpha-lady, a pleasingly orgasmic delight& a fire cracker like Sunny thats NOT ordinary for it would Never do (the hero & heroine did rock the boat babeee) better yet surely the so called fiancee' on the other hand..Wimped out Winnee all in all would have a problem, but what an understatement being said he was Graced a precious gift Called: woman. Gee whizzzzzz talk about a subcious ego deformed major whacked job..pleezzzeee!
Sadly, even in this Day there is still a problem with identifying also comprehending a strong woman, because some people say OOOh she’s too alpha or high strung or her personality is out of control. I’m speaking of the strong heroine .Even with that being said, about some women how do U find a balance in what U read or perceived about the heroine. How does this define what we read in Romance? Do we have freedom in creativity or is Our own personal visual eye destroyed by political correctness to a great measure of degree?
Have we truly embraced the notion of a true Alpha or strong women? Do we really know the difference between having a quiet spirit but can still be a force to be reckon with.(no the heroine is not crazy)
Do we respect it or neglect it? They R automate stereotype that quiet nature heroine as a rug, door mats or having no spine? Is it wrong to be a strong fighter whose voice is soft ,walks with pride but action speaks volumes powerful truths?
Heyyy, these R question I ask myself its almost like trying to figure out the never ending battle : The cure for the common cold.. Lingering, Pondering muses..floods the rivers of my mind. It drowns & carries me under..carried away with many thoughts of how, whys & wonders.
Technically yupp U guess it is food for though. Stuff that often makes U go hmmmm..! One thing I do know Sunny Chandler’s Return personified for me what a strong woman is. It’s all about women such as my mom also as well as other women I’ve observed on this journey called life. I must say As with them w fictitious characters they leave me in awe, deep thought of imagination filled with so many possibilities for life living loving & thoroughly enjoying the world around me.
Furthermore Ooh eureka what a magnificent reference Sunny Chandler’s Return story is to look back on! Lesson learned about what if’s possibilities , so what’s even with tears in our eyes with grace & determination never being denied. A story for us even through adversity when life throws embarrassing lemons U can still say I shall Rise! It’s not so bad when destiny throws ur way, some fire, passion, & love in the mix...hmmm...well now that’s truly Romantic & Sensational!
SUNNY CHANDLER'S RETURN: FIRST OF ALL I'M A SUCKER FOR A GOOD STICK TO YA RIB SOUTHERN READ!! :)
THIS NOVEL IS A TO DIE FOR READ! ....AAA AWESOME FUN LOVING,KEEP ME LAUGHING ...LAUGHTER IS THE VERY BEST STIMULANT to ADD IN ONES (((Life))) WITHOUT HARMFUL SIDE AFFECTS ! HEYYY IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO DENY YOUR SELF OF LIFE'S PLEASURE . I ALSO LIKE THE QUICK PACE FLOW OF THE STORY...IT ALLOWS ME TO JOURNEY ON TO MY OTHER (Novels)WAITING IN THE WING.
THE CHARACTERS ARE IN VIVID COLORS PEOPLE THAT ARE TRULY SOUTHERN BORN. OOOH BOY,I KNOW THESE FOLK(((giggle))) THE SPIRIT OF THE STORY LINE TRANSMITS TO THE READERS BRAIN IN LIVING COLOR (BRIGHT&CLEAR)SUNNY CHANDLER'S RETURN: yep,yep..COULD WELL BE A MOVIE ON THE BIG SCREEN!!!
I'M SOOO GLAD THIS KEEPER TOUCHED ,ENTERTAIN MY WORLD&YOU CAN BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR IT WILL CONTINUE TO ENTERTAIN ME FOR YEARS TO COME.... AGAIN&AGAIN!!! ;)
Fun as a paperback. Awful as an Audiobook due to narrator.
AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR - Beth McDonald: I feel like this narrator is mad at the world so everything she reads has an irritated or negative tone. I read the paperback several years ago and enjoyed it. But the audiobook was bad - due solely to the narrator Beth McDonald (BM). I wanted to quit listening. Here are the problems.
1. For the hero and heroine (Ty and Sunny) most of their dialogue sounded like they were irritated or angry. When I read the paperback I read Ty as desiring her, wooing her, being sensually suggestive. BM made him sound arrogant, angry, scowling, irritated, and mean. One part of the text said “his voice was laced with so much suggestion it seemed tangible.” But BM read it like he was arrogant and angry. For Sunny, BM made her sound haughty, sarcastic, disgusted, condescending, unlikeable. In the paperback I read her in a softer way.
2. For general narration I felt like BM was LECTURING ME. She did not read with interest, wonder, or curiosity.
3. At times BM’s voice sounded like a 50-year-old chain smoker. She made Sunny sound elderly, not a 29-year-old woman.
THE BOOK: Below is my review of the paperback from 2010.
3 ½ stars. I’m shocked at how this guy doesn’t take no for an answer! But he was irresistible to her. It was fun but short.
STORY BRIEF: During the wedding ceremony, when asked to say” I do,” Sunny said “I don’t” and walked out of the church. She then moved to New Orleans. She never explained why, and the town has been full of gossip and conjecture ever since. It is three years later. Sunny’s best friend Fran is getting married and asked her to come home for a week to help. On Sunny’s first night back she meets Ty at a pre-wedding party. Ty moved to town shortly after Sunny had moved out.
The entire book is about Ty wooing Sunny and winning her over. Secondary stories were discovering why Sunny walked out of her wedding and what bad things happened in Ty’s past. It’s shorter than most romance novels.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: I recently read Night Angel and enjoyed the guy’s “gentleness and restraint” in wooing and having sex with an abused woman. Ty in this book is as opposite as you can get. He is oblivious to the words “no” and “go away.” I’ve read about a lot of guys who give orders in the bedroom, but I don’t recall reading about someone as “forceful in flirting” as Ty outside the bedroom. For example: When he first meets Sunny, he walks up to her, chats for a minute and then says George “bet a new fly-casting rod against a case of Wild Turkey that I couldn’t get you into bed with me by the end of next week.” He then puts his arms around her and starts dancing with her, even though she said she didn’t want to dance. She’s almost in shock from his words and actions. Although she keeps saying no, Ty keeps showing up. He touches her and kisses her against her will, but each time she melts. I couldn’t stop thinking about or comparing this to date rape, but Ty’s actions were somehow positive, not negative. It didn’t hurt that he was gorgeous and women swooned over him. And he never raped her. He forcibly kissed her and touched her, and she was welcoming in her responses, and then he would say goodbye – and then she was mad at herself because she didn’t wanted him to stop. I think it worked because Ty wanted her to be happy and wanted things to be good for her. I wouldn’t want a guy to read this book and get ideas thinking this is the way to treat women, but for a woman to read it, it’s ok. It’s a definite change of pace, and it was fun. It’s light reading, no suspense or bad guys here – other than picking the right mate.
DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 227 pages. Swearing language: mild. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 2. Setting: current day Latham Green, Louisiana. Copyright: 1987. Genre: contemporary romance.
After chapter 2, I skimmed the book hoping for improvement. It never got better. Technically it's a 1 star read for me, but I threw in the second star recognizing that when it was published, Ty may not have seem as much of a jerk as he did and Sunny may not have appeared as stupid for falling for him. It was cliche, predictable and I was never vested in any character.
I don't normally go for the romance book. The real thing is better for me. However, the story was similar to the Harlequinn love stories but with more interaction between the man and woman. The author takes the time to develop a storyline without all the star-gazing, bells and whistles and pomp & circumstance that normally covers a love story. It's a funny love story. It's irrational especially how the male just decides to tell her that he'd like to go to bed with her just so he could win his bet on the first encounter. The book appealed to me around the middle of the book because it showed that there were more to both of them than they wanted others to see.
I think there’s yet to be a Sandra Brown book I haven’t liked. Her non-suspense romances even manage to be complex and sexy without being sickly sweet or cliché. Sunny may have over-reacted a bit to her wedding that didn’t happen, but I understand small towns and how news, accurate or not, travels fast. Ty was straight-forward and pushy, but seemed to know exactly what she needed, right from the start. Brown is one of the best at creating sexual tension, and that’s what really sells a romance for me.
This book was an alright kinda read but let me say totally unrealistic. If I found my man in bed with a good friend the morning before our wedding I sure wouldn't have taken the blame when I walked out and left him at the alter. Also if a man made a bet to get me in bed and actually told me about it I'm sorry there's just no way he would have ever gotton close to me. These are the two sticking points for me...but if you can move on from those it's ok to read to pass time.

I rolled my eyes so hard at every turn of page. Besides the sexist remarks which seemed they were introduced as a joke, the fact that there are multiple scenes where it is obviously stated the main female character wants nothing to do with the main male character, repeatedly saying "no" to his advances and him having 0 regards for it is absolutely disgusting and gives a very wrong idea. That's the main reason why i gave this book one star. It did not feel like a love story to me.
This book it's painfully outdated. Not just because women dress like the characters of 'Dynasty' lol, but because of the whole chauvinistic aspect of it. A man acting like that wouldn't fly in 2014 or anywhere else other than small town wherever. I just kept rolling my eyes at the silliness if it all. I'll just stick to Sandra Brown's latest books.
Ha, a Sandra Brown book, even one released initially in the 1980’s is a joy to behold. There’s absolutely no doubt that she is my favorite author whose books I can re-read any number of times. Of course, her early works have not been entirely 5 * reads but that is probably due to the fact that a 1980’s book wouldn’t appeal to the current 2020’s reading sensibilities, however, I have always wished to read all her available published works and thus Sunny Chandler’s Return.
Sunny has run away from her small town Latham Green to New Orleans in a cloud of scandal. However, her best friend’s wedding has brought her back and surely, she doesn’t have it easy facing the gossipmongers. Leaving her fiancé in the wedding altar of course is no mean feat and giving no reason whatso ever for her actions has given the act more importance than it deserves.
Ty Beaumont the Sherriff of Latham Green is the one guy every woman hangers for, but he also has a painful past that Ty refuses to discuss with anyone.
The romance is hot and of course the hero is a jerk, a total alpha who sees a walking woman and wants her in bed. But as long as one knows what to expect in such books then no harm done, you know what I mean. It is just pure male masochism, the forceful on your face sexual innuendos getting a bit much by the end of the story but again, just read it for what it is.
Short little read, kinda an SB tease, but enjoyable. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate one bit of it either.
Ty was very memorable, but maybe it's just because he was very pushy and straight forward and those are both things I like in my heroes (are they still called heroes in these romance stories when they technically did nothing heroic???) Anywho, I also love the name Ty... simple and sexy ;-)
Sunny on the other was very forgettable to me. In fact even though the book was named after her I keep asking myself what her name was. I literally finished reading it a few hours ago.....
All in all I still intend to read every SB book and story out there... even if they aren't all 5 stars
I knew this was an older book when the television show Dynasty was used as a fashion reference. 1987. No cell phones, the internet wasn’t mentioned...good times!
I saw someone else called this book cheesy. I'm right there on that same page. I read this for my Adult Pop Lit class. It's not something I would have picked up on my own, but my mom and sister (both romance readers)recommended Sandra Brown.
I found a lot to hate about this book. Sunny was supposed to be such an independent firecracker, but really, Ty was in control of EVERYTHING. He compares her at one point to a child who has been told she can play with every toy but one. In one scene, he fully illustrates the "no means yes" attitude, pushing and pushing even though Sunny is explicitly saying no. I realize Brown had to build up the sexual tension (which I admit she does a good job of) but I found this exchange to be immensely disturbing.
And of course, Sunny turns out to be a virgin who loves her fist sexual experience. Yeah right.
The overt sexuality was a little much for me. It's just not my style. I guess I like my sexy books a little more subtle.
As for some of what I'm supposed to consider for class--the romance is definitely the main plot of this book. We know Sunny is a designer of Mardi Gras costumes and Ty is a sheriff. We know that they are both involved in the wedding of friends. We eventually get the back story on both of them--he got sick of big city cop corruption, she ran out on her wedding day because her fiance cheated on her. But really, the bulk of this story revolves around their physical encounters with each other which are laid out in pretty explicit detail.
Setting is more important than I thought to this book. It takes place in a small Louisiana town. The fact that it's a small town (full of gossip) is pretty important.
The book is dated by references to Dynasty and by fashion descriptions, but the copy I read was a reissue, packaged pretty modernly.

Fun, sexy read. I admit I wanted Sunny to put Ty in his place a few times, but overall I enjoyed his aggressive, yet somehow good-humored, pursuit. (But I still got a kick out of Sunny turning tables on Ty.) I definitely laughed out loud a few times.
I really like this book, when i was reading it i could just forget about all my problems and my life and just get into the romance between Ty and Sunny. And I found it funny that the word NO really seemed to missing from Ty's dictonarry:D
