A Definitive Look at Oneness Theology: In the Light of Biblical Trinitarianism

Rate this book
A Definitive Look at Oneness In the Light of Biblical Trinitarianism (4th ed.) critically examines the claims of Oneness unitarian theology in light of biblical exegesis. Specifically, this book clearly shows that the entire content of biblical revelation reveals that the one true God is triune existing in three distinct persons—the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Further, the triune nature of God has been implicitly and explicitly affirmed by the early church, important Ecumenical Councils (and their resulting Creeds), and contemporary conservative biblical scholarship.Oneness theology rejects the biblical doctrine of the Trinity erroneously assuming a unitarian view of God—namely, a one person deity whose name is “Jesus.” Hence, it teaches that Jesus is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Oneness advocates then see the titles “Father,” Son,” and “Holy Spirit” as mere names or roles that Jesus manifests and not as distinct persons. They embrace the notion that “Son” represents the humanity of Jesus while “Father” (and Holy Spirit) represents the deity of Jesus, thus denying the unipersonality, deity, and preexistence of the Son, Jesus Christ. This view sharply opposes the biblical position that the Son had/shared glory “with” the Father “before the world was” (John 17:5). Since, the biblical presentation of the preexistence of the Son (esp. as Creator) is the Achilles’ heel of Oneness doctrine, this book devotes the needed space and attention to the exegesis of key passages (such as Gen. 19:24; John 1:1-18; 17:5; Col. 1:16-17; Phil. 2:6-11; and the prologue of Hebrews), which positively affirms biblical Trinitarianism. On this point alone, the Oneness position is shown biblically false.

This book is masterful in both its scholarship and its completeness. Because of the author's scholarship, I chose to read the book very slowly and with conscious deliberation. I was not disappointed. This is a must have resource for every pastor and serious student of God's Word. I commend it highly.

I have received this book by requesting to review it. It's a simple read without the much detailed Greek or scholarly wording. Much of the citation comes from David Bernard the top leading Oneness apologist. What I find interesting is the fact that to disarm the biblical and historical belief of the trinity, a straw man argument is said to "easily" disarm the doctrine. Mr. Dalcour has done a good service to the oneness community in honestly representing them in showing the errors of their poor exegesis of their doctrine according to scripture.
An and example of this will be
Oneness teachers use ( Deut 4:35, 6:4, Isa 43:10, 44:6,8, 1 Tim 2:5)
As absolute solitary “one” or idea of “one person”
Robert Morey indicates there are 9 words in biblical Hebrew that can mean “one”
(ish, ishahm nephesh, yachiyd, almoni, echad, gam, badad, chad)
The word exclusively applied to God to denote that He is “One” is Echad ( Deut 6:4)
Hebrew term Echad can have the meaning of complex or compound oneness or unity (Gen 2:24,11:6, Ex 26:6,11) Can mean both compound unity and solitary “one” or “alone” but the
Hebrew word that solely denotes absolute “one” or “alone” is yachiyd (Judg 11:34,Ps 68:6)
Pg.9-10
As I read the book, it was not a heavy read nor was it a simple book where my thoughts were not provoked to challenge and to content for the faith.
