The dungeon scene is amazing but Asta is still yelling and as a character he remains 1-dimensional.
2.5 rounding up for the action in the art. If the plot and characters don’t develop more depth and nuance and remain a gang on adventures with no growth then I will drop this pretty soon.

Volume 2 was another pretty solid volume in this series. It’s definitely a very character driven series for me as the plot is still following a fairly standard formula for shonen mangas. I will be continuing with this series since there’s some characters that I absolutely adore in Black Clover.

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

This is a review of volumes 1-2 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.

I was quite taken by the magical world that Black Clover is set in... it's very European with castles and knights and rivaling countries, but its best quality is the magical grimores! While I haven't been saturated in shonen manga, lets be real here... even I can see this is chock full of shonen stereotypes. I don't consider that a bad thing. Sure there are stories that are something totally new, a twist so epic that its origins aren't readily apparent. Then there are the stories that takes elements we know and love and twists them enough that while familiar is still really good stuff! That is Black Clover!

For me, I love the grimores so, of course, I LOVE Asta! He's the one with a totally unique grimore, an upbeat attitude I enjoy and persistence like you wouldn't believe! In fact, after pondering why I enjoyed these volumes so much I realized its because he reminded me of what I like best about Naruto... Except that I really love his relationship with Yuno! Yuno is clearly superior but he's a whole lot less of an ass about it than Naruto's rival. To me this is a great sign! We already have improvements on tropes that were pulled together for this story! It adds this delicious tension that was never present in Naruto...

And we get right into the action. I only watched Naruto so I don't know how Black Clover compares volume for volume but Asta and Yuno obtain their grimores swiftly in volume 1 without glossing over events and we get onto meeting a cross section of Asta's team! Pretty tight. We even get the beginnings of Asta's first mission! In volume 2 we see Asta learning while getting blooded and then move along to some rivalry with Yuno and his elite team. We also learn of a rivaling country and their magic team! BOOM! We get right into the story. I admit its all made more fun due to Asta being the primary POV.

And ALL THE CHARACTERS! We have two full knight teams for Asta and Yuno, plus 7 other squads and then the current sorcerer emperor! And that isn't even talking about the antagonists that aren't a part of the squads! And the character designs are so distinct!! That is a major plus for me in the art department. This is that wonderfully striking and modern art that is an update on what made manga popular in the first place. The battles are shown off to great effect and the expressions are sharp and telling. Really its a cap on the fun magic in Black Clover.

Black Clover vol 1 is a great start to a new series! The action only gets better in Black Clover vol 2 and I can't wait to see what Asta does next and how his anti-magic and his physical conditioning create the right environment for this passionate kid to excel!

⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

This continues their mission as they are sent to a dungeon to check it out and find whats going on there for only to discover its the Diamond Kingdom people and there are some interesting fight like Lotus and Luck and then we have Mars whose a super powerful guy and here they meet the members of the Golden Dawn and so its upto them to defeat these people and save the Clover Kingdom! I love the simplicity of the story and its fast paced nature and world building and showcasing new threats from all sides and giving the leads awesome entrances and powers! The art is gorgeous and growing on me!

I'm highly enjoying this one! Things escalate in the second volume with more powers, more characters, and more fun and adventures. I can't wait to see more of Asta, Yuno, Noelle and the rest of the gang!

Luck was definitely a highlight for me in this volume. We get introduced to his back story and his powers in battle. Looking forward to more from him too!

Bring on volume 3!

This was a great second volume!

Something that I really appreciate about this series, which I failed to mention in my last review, is that Tabata gives the audience each Black Bulls member's conflict as they're introduced. Rather than draw out struggles until the big reveal several chapters down the line, Tabata lets the reader in on the inner struggles of the Black Bulls members. I honestly really like this because establishing a conflict early gives the story more time to show their struggles as well as their development. Noelle is a perfect example of this and I'm already super invested in her character because her conflict was introduced when she was and now I get to see her grow from the start.

As far as characters go, I'm still having a blast with the Black Bulls and I LOVED the teamwork sections of both missions. It's cool watching someone be a badass on their own, it's fucking EPIC watching them be badasses as a group.

I love the fights, I love the art, I love the characters/ character interactions, I just love everything. I'm so glad I gave this series a chance!

This series is just mediocre for me. I’ve heard that it gets better later on but someone please confirm this for me because I don’t want to waste my time reading this to never have it get better. The only reason I really keep reading is for the side characters who all have interesting backstories.

This was a great volume 2. Love how happy the black bulls are with getting a star. Golden dawn and Black bulls go to the same dungeon and its really cool. Love the fight scenes and the art as well.

3.5/4⭐

Series Info/Source: This is the second book in the Black Clover series. I bought this book.

Story (4/5): The story was fine. In this book Asta and his team of Black Bulls are ordered by the Wizard King to a mysterious dungeon to retrieve powerful relics. However, mages from a rival country show up and the Black Bulls and Golden Dawn are forced to work together.

Characters (3/5): Many new characters enter the story and I am starting to have trouble keeping track of them. There wasn’t a ton of character development either. However, I did enjoy one of the encounters between the Wizard King and Asta.

Setting (4/5): The setting of the dungeon was fun and it was interesting to visit the markets. Aside from that this remains a fairly typical fantasy-like setting. The dungeons remind me a lot of the Magi manga series.

Writing/Drawing Style (3/5): I felt like things were a lot more disorganized and hard to follow in this book. Fight scenes are a bit muddled and we jump quickly back and forth between scenes without any way to tell that the scene has changed. I also am not a fan of how every fighting method is given a called out name and blingy picture. I know this is done in a lot of shounen, but I have never been a fan.

My Summary (3.5/5): Overall this was a mixed bag for me. I continue to enjoy some parts of the story and Asta as a character. However, I felt like there was too much going on in this volume...too many new characters, the action was hard to follow, and too much switching between different storylines. I plan on reading the next volume but may not continue after that.

The first mission ends by defeating a forgettable villain and a bird coming out of nowhere with the macguffin the bad guys were looking for. How lazy is that? We got zero insight to what the villain wanted, what the bird was, what the stone does, or who the villagers are. The author just throws a trinket and a mascot animal at them with no explanation and calls it a day. The Bulls also didn’t even question what the heck was all that about and go back to repeating their one-gag personalities for one more time.

Then the second mission begins, and it’s about exploring a dungeon that can potentially destroy the world with the artifacts stored inside it. The wizards point out how dangerous that place is, and how they should send their best men immediately. The Bulls respond by sending three rookies, while the rest do absolutely nothing. Yeah, that’s how you prove how serious the situation is.

Are the rookies perhaps working as a team and thus have nothing to fear? Nope, they split up as soon as they are inside for the dumbest reasons, and the girl gets molested by a plant that looks like a vagina. Really serious mission indeed. Then the girl forgets to use the magic barrier she asspulled out of nowhere in the previous arc and somehow manages to propel the protagonist towards a villain using magic, something she shouldn’t be able to do because she has no control over her magic abilities. The author does not even try to have some consistency.

Things are escalating! ! The manga is definitely better than the series. The animation during the fight scenes was horrible in the anime.

I gotta admit this series is entertaining if nothing else. This finishes up the big epic fight in a nice fashion. Then we take a short break for a comedy chapter that kind of works. Then back to a main mission with two different magic companies trying to finish a dugeon.

The fights are easy to follow which is nice and look good. The fan service finally reveals itself as the main girl gets tied up like bandage style and her ass shows. Lame. But anyway the ending is actually pretty great and got me excited for volume 3.

The good: a larger cast, bigger political drama between the nations, lots of rivalries and antagonists with differing powers, and the always-fun hook of a dungeon crawl RPG-style quest being translated into an ongoing comic form.

The bad: everything, damn near everything, oh my god. Art can be good but isn't exciting, jokes don't land, fights don't have anything fancy, dialogue is stilted, narration is aggravating.

There's some stuff I like here, it's not the worst thing ever, but wow it's got nothing I could point to and go "yeah this is a good reason to read this manga".

This book is just as great as the first, it really develops the characters of the story even more. I love how the story turns and ends up in the main characters favor. It really was interesting how people react to Aster getting into a guild and how he is respected even though he is the lowest of all of the magic knights. He is finally able to work towards his goal. This book has surprised me in many ways.

Continues to be entertaining. There are a lot of usual tropes in this series making it feel familiar. There are the guilds a la Fair Tail, the spell books a la Zatch Bell and now a dungeon hunt a la Magi. Put it all together though and it's fun. This volume is mostly a dungeon quest so there are lots of traps and battles.

To absolutely no one surprise, I loved this chapter. I love how they show Luck and how they develop his personality, showing his motives and why he become a person so unique as he is. The art is awesome, the fight is awesome and I love their friendship. I'll start the next one right now!
