I've been working through some books on my shelves this year and finally got around to reading Sin in Suburbia. While it is book one in a series, it definitely can be read by itself and I didn't feel like it left me on a big cliffhanger. It was full of suburban housewives, sexiness, and a bit of mystery. It definitely had a Desperate Housewives feel. A little campy, but oh so fun. If you're familiar with that show and liked it, you more than likely will enjoy this book.
Calista and her husband Tim live in suburbia, but they are hiding something. You never know what they are hiding, but it's something in their past. What we do know is that Calista isn't happy with her sex life with her husband. He's fine, but she continuously goes outside the marriage to find happiness in the bed. And those decisions will get her in more trouble that she can imagine.
I liked that Sin in Suburbia focused around a group of women that Calista hung out with after years in her neighborhood. It was a "book group" that was obviously formed to just get these women together to gossip and drink and get them out of their homes. I can totally relate to this. What I found interesting was the fact that these women never knew Calista before she was invited into their circle, even though she lived by them for years. They hadn't seen each other out getting their mail or in passing? It didn't add up. That and Tim seemed like an ok guy, but then he didn't want Calista to be friends with anyone...until he did? Some things just didn't really make sense. BUT, I did like the feel of the book and the general direction it took. I'm curious where Ms Cole will take this series next.
Overall, this was a solid debut that had some issues, but was still exciting and fun to read. The repetitiveness of the names was a bit redundant, but at least I always knew which characters were in each scene. For the next books, will we get more of the different suburban moms? Or is it now Brielle's time to shine? 3.5 stars
