Cute and fun, it's like Rat Race in book form, with lots more sexy times. However, I just didn't connect to the characters, so it was kinda meh for me.

I love road trips. I love cheeky characters. And a little, erm, friendly competition. And, yall, this was so cute! The Perils of Paulie was lighthearted, silly-sweet fun.

The quick of it is that Paulie and Dixon have both found themselves on reality tv show that's reenacting a historical 1908 round the world car race. Complete with antique cars, old fashioned clothes, cut throat competition, and maybe...a little romance. It's an adventure of a lifetime and might just land them more than they bargained for...true love.

These two really were so freaking cute. They're awkward and have a little fire in them. The proper Brit and the American heiress having her first real adventure. They had a fun dynamic between them and some nice little sexy moments. They both kept travel journals during the trip and that's actually how their story was told with them recounting race happenings, their naughty encounters, and such as they sit down and write things out. It was a little different but fun getting both their takes on things. The two were determined to win and really just so stinking cute together.

And then the race. Complete with bad guys, mishaps, broken down cars, Darth Vader pushing a dog in a stroller and all sorts of round-the-world shenanigans. I grew up driving Studebakers cross country so I could totally relate to that aspect and found it pretty spot on. Love my old cars but they are...finicky. lol I had a great time watching them speed across landscapes and different countries.

All in all... Romance, adventure, outrageous, cheeky fun. The Perils of Paulie was a hoot.

Ladies and gents...Katie Mac is back! With her latest installment of the Matchmaker in Wonderland series we meet the utterly hilarious Paulie Rostakova whose fated to meet the charmingly Ainslie brother: DIXON! Oh my if the Ainslie brothers aren't the smoothest and sweetest gentlemen of all!

Paulie has MacAlister's generally witty sense of humor and all around sassy comebacks but she's definitely not one to be taken for granted when there's a race to be won! The excitement through out the whole book was perfectly timed! As Dixon and Paulie's teams trek their way across the continental US and then Europe there are twists and tricks around every corner! Just when I thought "oh no, no more bad luck could befall these two"...I was wrong! MacAlister never fails to provide just the right amount of the unknown in each of her book's plot lines to keep you on the edge of your seat at the turn of every page.

On par with MacAlister's standard of sexy: the chemistry between Dixon and Paulie is immediate. From the most hilarious one liners and embarrassing circumstances to the sweet and caring moments between these two was easy to relate to. MacAlister has a way of portraying utterly relatable characters that ring true to anyone. This book had the most action of the series but lacked none of the romance or comedy! I had hoped for more a peek into the lives of the other Ainslie brothers and their lucky ladies but only time will tell!

It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world in Katie MacAlister’s latest romantic comedy The Perils of Paulie. It’s also a lot of over the top characters, awkward situations and clichéd humor that never quite zings as much as the author probably believes it does.

The Russian mob is out to get Paulina Rostakova! At least they are if you believe her overly protective father’s cries every time she tries to move out of the house. Paulie is fed up with her father’s dramatics and at twenty-nine it’s becoming a little humiliating to still live in her parent’s house without a real career. Fortunately her step-mother has always been in Pauile’s corner and comes up with a way for her to escape the house and do something fun. An English production company is looking for attractive young people to participate in a reality show modeled on the 1908 New York to Paris road race, including period cars and an international cast. Paulie has long admired the story of female adventurer Nelly Bly’s trip around the world so she jumps at the opportunity to try something that would make her personal hero proud. Grabbing her passport and sneaking away from her brutish bodyguard, Paulie arrives in New York City ready to start her own adventure while journaling her experiences along the way.

Paulie and Dixon are quite the entertaining couple:
“I apologize,” he said quickly. “I just wanted to make sure that if you were having a burning sensation in those spots, you received medical treatment—”
“I do not,” I said loudly, breathing heavily through my nose, “have anything in my crotch but a desire for your crotch to come visiting, although I have to admit that at this moment my crotch is having second thoughts.”
He pulled me up so that his p**** slid along my sensitive, STD-free parts. “What can I do to make your crotch forgive me?”
I loved this book, Paulie and Dixon were really entertaining add in Paulie's dad and it's a complete comedy.

Katie MacAlister once again proves how awesome she is. Dixon is awkward, Paulie is erratic, and they're perfect together. Add in a stormtrooper pushing a dog in a baby carriage, and you've got a recipe for ridiculous fun.

No one quite does madcap fun quite like Katie Macalister, and her stories that pair two unknowns into situations where sparks, tempers and occasional revelations fly are the best. Here we have Pauline, a rich and pampered young woman tired of the restrictions she feels are hampering her life. She’s desperate for adventure away from her overprotective and meddlesome father, she’s reaching for her adventure with two hands. On the other side of the coin is Dixon, cajoled in by the producers of this race, as they want his history, his looks and charm to bring them a ‘talking point”. See, he’s to be paired with Pauline (Paulie) and they are to act as if they are in a whirlwind romance, complete with a wedding at the end.

These two are SO cute – both are slightly awkward, good natured and spirited, and while Paulie is quick witted and funny, Dixon’s humor is more sedate and quietly creeps up on you. Smooth and sophisticated, he is always that in every circumstance. But Paulie is like that exuberant puppy finally off-leash: she’s enjoying her time away from the family expectations and business, and a keen competitive sense takes hold, one that she didn’t even know she had. Told from two perspectives, this story has attraction, humor, madcap adventure and a bit of misfortune as vintage vehicles are not always the most reliable. Slowly that instant attraction between the two has them actually enjoying, then looking forward to their moments together, even as threats, weird events and a few (ok – more than a few) head-bangingly embarrassing moments threaten their days.

Narrated by Saskia Maarleveld and Brian Hutchinson, the dual narration that instantly defines these characters works perfectly in telling the story. You can’t help but hear the smiles in the light moments, cringe with them both when their words fail and only embarrassment takes hold, and the frustration both have in not getting the words out ‘just right” in conversations. What stands out is the fun of the story, the heart of both Dixon and Paulie, and the desire for the story to never end.

I am a total fangirl for Katie MacAlister's dragon series... so I wanted to try out some of her contemporary and romantic comedy work as well. The Perils of Paulie is the fourth book in the Matchmakers in Wonderland series, but its the first book of the series that I am reading. It seemed to work fine as a standalone for those who haven't read the earlier books.

Paulina "Paulie" Rostakova is the daughter of the flooring king of California, an extremely over-protective father that used to be involved in the Russian mob in his home country. Still living at home in the family mansion at nearly 30 years old, Paulie laments her boring and uneventful life. I was a little worried that her whining at the beginning of the book would persist and drive me crazy, but it didn't and Paulie grew on me as the book progressed. She is a bit awkward and embarrasses herself quite often, and I could certainly relate to those characteristics. When the chance comes up for Paulie to appear on a reality show featuring a race across the world, she jumps on the opportunity despite her father's objections. I loved Paulie's father - he cracked me up with his paranoia, suspicion and declarative statements.

The reality show was a nice touch, reminiscent of The Amazing Race. The contestants were slated to drive antique cars across the US, Europe and Asia while wearing period clothing, to re-enact a similar race that occurred in 1908. As most reality shows guarantee, there was quite a bit of drama and sabotage embroiled in the production. I liked this portion of the story and it helped keep the plot moving along at a steady clip when we weren't focusing on any potential romance.

Dixon Ainslie is a handsome brit, an estate manager to his brother's grand English manse. Dixon was a bit of a beta male, not usually what I go for, but I liked him well enough and he matched our heroine. I saw him in my head as a Dermot Mulroney a la My Best Friend's Wedding. He was just as awkward as Paulie, and was the complete opposite of a womanizer due to a rocky relationship in his past. He didn't seem to have much ambition to me, though he was a workaholic on the estate. When he was reluctantly talked into the race by a matchmaking cousin, his main reason for going was the opportunity to drive the antique cars. He doesn't quite know what to make of our awkward Paulie at their first few meetings.

Dixon and Paulie started off with several awkward encounters which were cute and caused some light chuckles. I thought their awkward pairing was cute, and they had some entertaining banter. Paulie had the tendency to go overboard, becoming obnoxious, but Dixon kept a cool head and balanced out her behavior.

As this book was about a reality show, I felt like the filming aspects were not developed as fully as they could have been. The cars often did not have a camera team with them to catch the contestants in action... and the cameras inside the car weren't mentioned past the first quarter of the book. I don't know why that stuck out to me, but I found myself wondering how the production company would have enough material to make a full season show.

This was an entertaining romantic comedy - one that would probably translate well to film or television. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher, Berkley.

Back when I started blogging I enjoyed some of Katie MacAlister’s earlier books in the Paranormal Romance genre. They were funny and sexy in much the same way Mary Jnice Davidson’s were. I found I was less enamoured of later books in either that, or the contemporary genre.

What I find to be MacAlister’s great strength AND weakness is the ridiculous, outlandish even, nature of her stories and characters. While the two characters most central to this novel are within the bounds of what I would consider within the bounds of “normal” many of the other characters range from a little off to “Yo! We need a straitjacket over here!” I have found the key with the ridiculous is how far it goes before it is just too silly or over the top. Sometimes the characters or situations are just too blah to be in a farce and sometimes they are just too far over the top to be at all genuine. In regards to this book, I felt MacAlister is on-target most of the time.

MacAlister’s strength is to take the ridiculous and run with it without losing all sense of believability. Here she reaches the finish line without collapsing or losing interest in the race.

One character in this story is a young woman whose heroine is Nelly Bly, a female journalist at a time when women did not engage in such a profession. I loved to read about Nelly Bly when I was a kid. Paulie is still enthralled with Nellie Bly as an adult. Nelly Bly takes Jules Verne’s novel, AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS to heart and travels around the world for her newspaper the New York World in 1889.
Verne’s book seems to endlessly spawn adaptations in films, TV events, and books and other print formats (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Around_...).

One movie inspired by both Verne and an early film, THE 1908 NEW YORK TO PARIS RACE (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1908_Ne...) was THE GREAT RACE a 1965 film with Natalie Wood, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, and more. It is the latter on which the reality TV program featured in THE PERILS OF PAULIE is based.

This is clever as I have not seen this theme in current, contemporary fiction. And, it created a nostalgic feeling for me as I actually remember when the inspirational movie THE GREAT RACE came out.

Paulie is also an adult-child forced to remain living at home by her overbearing, outlandish, Russian father. It’s funny that when I was growing up, Russians were portrayed as either evil, communist spies or the oppressed; now they are almost always portrayed as gangsters or other criminals. Paulie’s father was a gangster but now, on the West Coast of the USA he is a very successful businessman. He is grotesquely overprotective of Paulie who is approaching 30!

Dixon is also kept back somewhat because of his role in his unconventional, British, noble family featured in all of these stories. He is also kept back by his tragic romantic history and the abusive nature of the fiancee who made him her victim.

I enjoyed this story more, perhaps, than the other stories in this series. It was a little more engaging, perhaps because of the nostalgic hooks. It was a good, light read perfect for a vacation.

My Thoughts:
If you haven't read this series you really need to pick it up.

As the fourth installment in the Matchmaker series I love the character connections between the books that bring cameos to the table. I'm a sucker for cameos.

Although Paulie took some getting used to as far as some of her personality traits I liked her and Dixon together but I really liked Dixon the most.

I think more than Paulie - Dixon stood out as the most liked personality to me. Paulie got a little weird in some places a little wish - wash with insecurities however I still enjoyed the read.

Some of the comedy/sense of humor was a little over the top for me to find funny but I liked it all in all.

Katie MacAlister has always been one of my go-to authors when I want a feel-good romance. She just knows how to bring a light-hearted, fun story to life. So, when The Perils of Paulie was available for my review, I just had to snag it up!

This story is a sharp and witty book that reads a lot like “The Great Race” or “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”. Told through extremely creative writing, this sweet romance between Paulie and Dixon is a wonderfully entertaining read. It’s nothing new in terms of a romantic plot line, but the execution of the author’s talents makes it feel fresh and exciting. Add on top of that the author’s innate ability to make you laugh yourself to tears every single time, and you’ve got all the makings for a brilliant story.

Ms. MacAlister, you never fail me. You truly are a gift to the literary world of romance.

Was this book supposed to be funny? I assumed so by review quotes on the back such as "gut-wrenchingly funny" and "hilarious and seductive in all the right places." Yuck. I didn't even snicker as I was reading this book.

The premise sounded like it would be a fun, light read with some humor and romance... perhaps another Sophie Kinsella/ Jennifer Crusie/ Susan Elisabeth Phillips. So much nope. By about fifty pages in, I knew very little about the two main characters. However, I did know quite a bit about all the nasty things they wanted to do to each other within a couple hours of meeting.

By the time I'd hit the 50% mark in the book, I still knew very little about the characters, save for a late night revelation by one of them. By this point in the book, there had already been 2 love scenes and several near-misses and fantasies. I don't have a problem with that, per se, but there has to be a story driving things along.

It was suddenly feeling to me that Katie MacAlister was systematically getting rid of the other racers so that the two main characters could be together and it would be easier to have them hook up.

I decided to give up when I realized that I didn't care about how the book ended.

So disappointed.

Pauline has led a very sheltered life so when her stepmothers friend mentions a around the world race she volunteers, much to the dislike of her father. Her father is afraid someone from Russia will kidnap her and tries to send bodyguards to keep and eye on her. When she gets to the race she finds she is in the suffragette car and its with two other women one of them being the producers daughter. When she meets Dixon and his brother she is very attracted to him and she tells him how she is keeping a journal of the trip and he decides to do it also. The book describes what each writes in the journal but the antics that go on during the race and to Pauline herself are hysterical. At first I just thought she was spoiled until she got to the race she was funny. Good read with some romance tucked in.

I would give this a solid 4.5. It had me laughing out loud more than once while reading. MacAlister's characters are always fun and Paulie and Dixon didn't disappoint. Plus, re-creating the great race; how fun is that?!? MacAlister comes up with the most fun and original plots!
Also, while I enjoy getting glimpses of other Ainslie's that we've met in previous stories, what I really enjoyed was getting to see the characters from MacAlister's standalone book, The Corset Diaries! What an unexpected treat! My only wish for this book was that there had been more resolution/confirmation of who the saboteurs where (and that they be punished) and who the kidnappers were--did they work for Rostakova or were they truly old enemies? But both of those are trifles and the reader, really, can make up their own mind. Neither of those questions takes away from Paulie & Dixon and their HEA.

The Perils of Paulie is another romping good time with author Katie MacAlister and her characters. In the fourth book of the Matchmakers In Wonderland series we meet Ainslie brother Dixon and sheltered Paulie who have been entered in a race around the world. While reeanacting a historic race for a reality show Paulie and Dixon deal with sabotage, body guards sent by an over protective father, uncomfortable corsets and falling in love.
Fans of other Katie Mac books will be delighted about revisiting characters from the past and catching up with their lives!
Like the others in this series I found this to be another fun read,laughed throughout it and was left looking forward to more. I love the Ainslie boys and fall a little in love with each one.

So I love Katie MacAlister, hence why I read the book, but this is not her best work. I can see the kernels of her humor that I love, but the characters just were not all that relatable. Some were flat, others were perhaps a tad overdeveloped to the point where it felt they should have had more 'screen time'. The plot was also not very interesting compared to her other book with a reality show premise, The Corset Diaries. I kept finding myself yawning through the story, only caring about the main character's romance.

It was not a terribly bad book. It had a plot and a cute romance, even if one of the characters was so stuffy it was unreal. But if you are looking for a light read and want more of a feeling of satisfaction, I would read one of her other works before this one.

The premise was cute, but too much sex.

This quick read had a fun plotline and laugh out loud moments, meaning yes, I giggled aloud, but is not something I would have chosen had I known beforehand how graphic it would be. I can't actually tell you how graphic since I started flipping past pages so quickly the four or five times it happened. This was originally picked up on a written recommendation from an unfamiliar librarian. I prefer my romances clean and sweet or at the very least employing a closed door policy when it comes to describing physical expressions of affection. So overall, this book was a letdown, but now I know not to seek out anymore of this series.

this book is set up as 2 journals put together. a his and hers travel account.
but in the end some of the entries don't feel like a journal, they feel more like narrative storytelling, and what's worst, both caracters sound the same, to the point where I had to turn back a page or two, to the beginning of the entry to double check who was telling the story, despite the fact that she is American and he is English.

Love this series

I just finished, "A Matchmaker in Wonderland" series. It was such a good series. I'm rather sad to be done with this series, but excited to move on to another of Katie MacAlister's series. I'm sure I won't be disappointed. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes fast paced, adventurous, sexy stories.
