Night Wraith
Something inhuman is slaughtering teens in the small town of Carson Lake. Police Chief Gavin Wagner knows more than he wants to admit, but when he can no longer deny that a secret from his past compels the thing that stalks the night, Gavin must face the truth or lose everything he loves.
Years ago, Gavin protected his daughter Carly from the full truth about her mother's suicide. Talk of covens and the occult wouldn't have done his little girl any good in her time of grief. NIGHT WRAITH, by Christopher Fulbright and Angeline Hawkes is a supernatural horror novel combining some incredibly detailed scenes of carnage, as well as a great depth of characterization and emotional turmoil.
It's been six years since Police Chief Gavin Wagner and his teenage daughter, Carly, lost their wife/mother, Beth, to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Aside from Beth's battle with bi-polar and depression, there were additional factors involved that Gavin chose to keep from his daughter. Carly, now maturing into a beautiful woman with plans of an eventual marriage to her boyfriend, Ethan, has her own thoughts and beliefs regarding the supernatural:
". . . she felt in a way she couldn't explain that something existed outside the realm of normal perception; . . . a sense of energy that can't be seen or touched . . ."
Her best friend, Abigail, has an even larger belief in powers untapped, as her declining homelife has thrust her into this new pursuit of knowledge.
When the first unnatural deaths begin occurring in Carson Lake--with witnesses claiming a greenish glow infused with malevolent energy was the cause, eventually even the police have to admit: ". . . at some point in a lawman's career, if he does it long enough, he'll come across something that doesn't make a damn bit of sense any other way than crazy. Or supernatural . . . "
Through this entire novel, Fulbright and Hawkes give their characters true depth--personalities, emotions, desires--all of these traits enhance these individuals and add a three-dimensional, life-like feel to them, making their actions and reactions all the more plausible. As we journey along with them, we uncover more to the story and the emergence of the hate-fueled, vicious "Night Wraith", than even Chief Gavin was aware of.
While the body count rises, the deaths get more "creative" and gruesome--with outstanding descriptions and details. Our characters must strive to unravel the mystery behind the Wraith, re-open old wounds, and search for help in the most unlikely of places. It is stated that: "There is no magician who considers himself evil. There are men and women who seek to saturate themselves in whatever supreme force unifies the cosmos . . . who envision their places as gods themselves . . . the driving force behind mastering external, or supernatural, forces, is a hunger for power."
Once this malevolent power is unleashed, will it be possible to ever contain the fury that has gotten out and escaped into this realm?
An outstanding novel of supernatural and occult lore, complete with detailed scenes that you can practically "see", and complex characters who infuse the story with a sense of realism.
Highly recommended!
***Re-read August 2018: Some parts were "less" exciting than others simply because this is a re-read, so certain revelations didn't pack the same punch. Still, an enjoyable book to come back to.**

Let me simply say I could not put this book down. I consumed it within a week (which is extremely rare for me). One of the best horror books I've read in a long time. Put it this way... when I got interrupted while reading this book, it took me a while to get out of the zone of the story before coming back to 'reality'. Over and above that, the cover illustration sets a brilliant and quite fitting visual for the story. Loved it!

I really wanted to like this book more, but it could have been trimmed by at least 50 pages. Very talky. A little too much teen age angst.

I bought the beautiful hardcover/signed version of this novel from SST. First of all, the book itself is gorgeous even without the great artwork on the dust cover and the story is lots of fun for supernatural-horror enthusiasts. I could not put it down. I was completely pulled in to the story of high school teen angst with Carly Wagner and her boyfriend Ethan James and the "Mean Girls" who make Carly and her friend Abigail's lives' miserable. Meanwhile some sort of supernatural "wraith" is killing teenage party goers in the town, and Carly's Police Chief dad Gavin is overworked trying to figure out what's going on as the teens' mutilated bodies are piling up. Then there's the old "Witch House" on Washington Hill with the drum tower, and it's mysterious and secluded resident, Vanessa, the suicide death of Carly's mom Beth six years before, and the budding relationship that Dad, Gavin, has with the beautiful Karen, and you have the makings of a first class horror story. Loved every minute of it right up to the clever surprise ending. I've been reading a few stories by the authors lately and they have taken a spot in my Favorite authors category. I am about to read another story they wrote named Scavengers next!

This story has it all: innocence, betrayal, chastity, debauchery, witchcraft, monsters, romance, bullying, and so much more! Most stories with so many elements devolve int a hot mess, but the authors held this story together and delivered a compellingly thoughtful, and ultimately uplifting horror story. If you are leery of gore, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you like compelling characters and a well crafted story... I highly recommend!!
Note: I received an ARC of this book for review. I fully intend to purchase the published version for my library it's that good!
