About the author

Margit Sandemo was a Norwegian-Swedish historical fantasy author. She has been the best-selling author in the Nordic Countries since the 1980s, when her novel series of 47 books, The Legend of the Ice People, was published. She has also written many other book series such as Häxmästaren and Legenden om Ljusets rike.

Niespodzianka: mój ulubiony Ludź lodu do tej pory.

Szczerze wciągnęłam się w zagadkę kryminalno-rodzinną, chociaż jej rozwiązanie było trochę bardziej sztampowe, niż bym tego chciała. "Starszy brat oświadcza się pannie w imieniu młodszego brata, ale tak naprawdę panna i starszy brat pragną siebie nawzajem" to klasyka gatunku. Do tego w zestawie dostajemy tutaj dramatyczny poród, główną bohaterkę masturbującą się o drzewo i alergię na suchy szampon puder do włosów jako ważny element fabuły. Nie mogłam się oderwać.

I love Elisabeth, great-granddaughter of Ulvhedin and Elisa and her story which is told in this book is a neverending lovely read.

The reason I'm not giving it a higher rating is partially because in the grand scheme of things, the story of the battle against Tengel the Evil and everything, it isn't all that important. But it doens't take anything away from the story that is both sad and hopeful, at times infuriating (or the characters are) and endearing. And I can't help but like Elisabeth. She's a very modern kind of woman, very much out of her time for a book set in the 1700s, but I think, rather that viewing it only as a weakness, a sign that maybe there could be done more to make her more believable in this time, I see it more as a (or another) sign of what is really obvious as I read this series: Isfolket in generel are very much out of their time. Their tolerance, their unyielding, I want to call it love of humanity, but I think it is more of a belief that all human beings are worth the same - and that's unusual, I think. At least in the time setting this series takes place in.

Anyways, this is much a story of love - and how love can both be a strong foundation to build on and at the same time devastating and ruinous. It is a mystery, a story of a decade old secret coming to life and changing the lives of everyone involved. But it is also the story of some endearing female characters, both the independent and compassionate Elisabeth and the fragile, lonely figure of the mysterious Karin. And of course, the impossible-not-to-love Vemund Tark.

This book holds a special place in my heart, and I'm a little sad that it doesn't hold a bigger place in the grand story. But that's not a reason not to love it. And definitely not an excuse to read it. I can tell you this already, without it, the jump to book 19 would be too big and, i think, too confusing.

This is easily the worst Ice People book I’ve read so far. It lost my attention more times than necessary and it just wasn’t very good.
The story never really took off for me and all of the characters just felt like names.
I’ve heard that the next couple of books are pretty good though so looking forward to that!

Główną bohaterką tego tomu jest Elizabet Paladin i mamy 1770 rok, więc przesuwamy się cały czas do przodu. Elizabet jest młodą kobietą, trochę powodującą palpitacje serca u matki, bo zachowuje się jak typowa indywidualistka, wybijająca się z przyjętych standardów. Pewien chłopak wpadł do wody podczas spławiania drewna i jest ciężko ranny. Elizabet ma talent lekarski, więc wsiada na konia i jedzie pomóc. Spotyka tam Vemunda Tarka, który ni stąd ni zowąd, prosi o rękę dziewczynę, w imieniu swojego brata. Elizabet jest piekielnie niezadowolona i stawia warunek, że najpierw pozna tego brata, a jeśli zaiskrzy to będą zaręczyny. Vemund zgadza się na to i oferuje Elizabet pracę. Dziewczyna wyjeżdża opiekować się pewną "szaloną kobietą", a przy okazji pozna przyszłego narzeczonego.

Ogólnie to byłam zaskoczona, że przeczytałam tę książkę praktycznie na jedno posiedzenie i zaangażowałam się w fabułę, czego nie czułam od kilku tomów wstecz. Postać Elizabet jest jedną z moich ulubionych, bo jest to kobieta wiedząca czego chce od życia i po prostu do tego po swojemu dąży. Wątek romantyczny został przysłonięty przez zagadkę związaną z przeszłością tej "szalonej kobiety", którą miała się opiekować. Od początku było wiadomo kto do kogo będzie smażyć cholewki, bo jest to oparte na wypracowanym przez autorkę schemacie.

W sumie bardzo polubiłam ten tom i mam nadzieję, że następne utrzymają ten sam poziom.

Det var väldigt kul och spännande att följa Elisabet! Lyssnade på ljudboken och ville bara fortsätta lyssna för att se vad som händer. Denna bok känns som ett typiskt exemplar av hur duktig Margit är på att bygga upp berättelser.

Elisabet är en väldigt sympatisk karaktär med många bra sidor. Det är lätt att tycka om henne. Hon är självständig men handlar inte dumdristigt.

Vermund kan ibland kännas lite för mycket av en brooding snubbe men det är fint att följa hur han och Elisabets relation utvecklas med tiden.

To chyba będzie jeden z moich ulubionych tomów, przynajmniej z tych dotychczas przeze mnie poznanych. Elisabet przypominała mi jedną z moich ulubionych członków rodu, czyli Cecylię, była podobnie zdeterminowana i stanowcza, bardzo ją polubiłam. Sama intryga też była naprawdę angażująca, zwłaszcza pod sam koniec, kiedy wszystko zmierzało do kulminacji. No i trzeba przyznać, że jest to odpoczynek od takich ważnych dla historii Ludzi Lodu tomów jak poprzednich kilka, coś w rodzaju tomu przestankowego, który według mnie był tej historii po prostu potrzebny.

En av de bättre böckerna i denna serie på länge!

Gillar verkligen Elisabeth, men flera av böckerna som följer Paladin släkten har varit bland mina favoriter så kanske inte är konstigt att jag gillar denna med.

Något jag på riktigt stör mig på, som också var ett problem med den tidigare boken, är karaktärer som känner skuld för något de inte har något ansvar för alls. Det är inte deras fel ändå så skyller de sig själva så mycket

Den här känns mer ”som vanligt” igen och passar mig bättre! Gillar Elizabeths karaktär och att handlingen är tillbaka i Norge. Nu har jag dessutom kommit längre i serien än sist! Var i mitten av den här boken jag slutade läsa förra gången.

Behind the Facade
Elisabet Paladin was down-to-earth and didn't take her mother's constant stories about great families or her dreams of a rich husband for Elisabet. Because no man was able to interest a girl - til she met Vemund Tark. When Vemund pcame to talk with her parents about marriage he wasn't asking for a hand of Elisabet for himself, but for his younger brother.
