An illustrated biography of the Regency era author whose timeless novels made history with their sparkling wit and social commentary. First published anonymously in England in the early nineteenth century, Jane Austen’s novels are still beloved by generations of fans all over the world. With enchanting illustrations, handwritten text, and excerpts from Austen's personal letters, this biography delves into the literary icon’s life. It shares stories of her childhood on a farm, the writing of her first novella, her marital woes, the inspirations behind Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, and more. Brimming with delightful details like the objects Austen kept on her desk and how much Emma originally sold for, this beautiful e-book explores Austen's life and celebrates her legacy.
Jane Austen has been reminding us for over two centuries that the quickest ways into someone’s heart are witty insults, passive-aggressive dining with mixed company, and a well-timed marriage proposal. In the rain preferably. And make sure you have a long march across a field so we can see your cloak billow. I love a good billowing. But, as Austen said ‘which of all my important nothings shall I tell you first?’ and I think before I start I’d like to hear your important somethings and that is: WHO WAS THE BEST MR. DARCY? No wrong answers but bonus points if you said Wishbone (truthfully for me its Mr. Knightly that is my Austen dream date though, sorry Fitzy) Jane Austen: An Illustrated Biography was a little dose of joy. Cheerfully illuminated with gorgeous watercolors by Nina Cosford, Zena Alkayat delivers this charming and succinct pocket sized biography of the late, great Jane Austen. Sure, you aren’t going to get academic depth or analysis here, but as a lovely little overview that is more engaging than wikipedia and a delight to look at, this makes for a perfect primer with the key details and enough to hold a prolonged conversation on the author at your next soiree so you can avoid having to dance with some cad. Because lets be real, when we all said “yea, I’d like to be a Jane Austen heroine” we probably got the scenes in our life that are funny on paper but sure suck in person. Tag yourself: Because sometimes a woman in an absurd hate is mean to you while another woman who hates you is absolutely killing it on the piano forte and there’s nary a thing you can do but develop resentment at this public dance you never wanted to attend in the first place.
This was such a nice little read and I realized I hadn’t actually known all that much about Austen’s biographical details until now. We get her family history, her awkward one-night stand engagement to Harris Bigg-Wither, and a good overview of her books. Plus I really love the artwork provided here, Cosford does a great job and it just makes you feel all cozy and happy inside. WHICH WE ALL NEED.
So dust off the pianoforte, make some politely snide comments about someone’s inheritance, flee a dinner party on excuses of having a mysterious illness, and check out Jane Austen: An Illustrated Biography from your local library.
Jane preferred prose and filled notebooks with wild and witty stories.
"I am almost afraid to tell you how my Irish friend and I behaved. Imagine to yourself everything most profligate and shocking in the way of dancing and sitting down together.'' Letter, January 1796
He found a wife two years later. She bore him ten children.
The book, priced at 15 shillings, sold out of its first print run. Jane earned £140 in royalties in two years.
...seguido de Orgulho e preconceito em 1812:
The book sold to the public for 18 shillings. She received £110.
"Which of all my important nothings shall I tell you first?'' Letter, 1808

A delightful little book! I devoured it in one sitting. Short and heavily illustrated, it's a delicious little morsel. The illustrations are very cute and pretty.
"Which of all my important nothings shall I tell you first?"
This is such a delightful read. What a family Jane had!!! Such a supportive father. Her life's like a perfect fictional story, like a fairytale. I never knew 'Sense and Sensibility' was originally named as 'Elinor and Marianne'! And she wasn't even 20 when she wrote it! And 'Pride and Prejudice' was originally written as... (I need to stop).
Enjoying such titbits as well as the delicious illustration. The Darcy art though 🤓
Amazing read indeed. I cannot believe it made me cry towards the end.
I am enjoying this pretty little series a lot. They're basically picture books for adults. I've read Coco, Virginia and Jane and am waiting for Frieda on my library holds lists. I read each at a sitting, learned a few new things even though they're extremely light. They seem like nice little gift books but would disappoint anyone looking for an in-depth biography.
This is genuinely a Gorgeous book, I really enjoyed all the quotes, and the illustrations are gorgeous and consistent. Even the quality of the book itself is really high. I haven't even read any of Austen's books,, just admired from Afar but even for me this was such a lovely, quick read.
My Bookstagram friend @bibliophilebakes brought this book to my attention. In looking for a cheap copy, I found that iBooks was selling it for $1.99! It's a sweet, child friendly biography of Jane Austen, with lovely watercolor illustrations.
What charming little book with some interesting facts about Jane Austen's life! (The Austens loved to put on plays?! <3) I loved the lovely watercolour illustrations. I only wished it would be longer and more detailed.
Do you know what gift Jane received from her father for her 19th birthday? OR which of her siblings was a talented poet? Jane Austen by Zena Alkayat and Nina Cosford is a fun and gorgeous book which answers everything you ever wanted to know about the Pride and Prejudice author.
Whether you are a Jane Austen aficionado or just someone who wants to know a little more about the famous author, this book is for you. Beautifully illustrated and full of interesting facts, this book tells the story of who Jane Austen was from her birth right through to the end of her life.
I loved the illustrations in this book. Almost every page features a small drawing or two to help divulge a little bit about the famous author. We get to see a little bit about each of Jane's novels along with some context about where she was in her life when she wrote them.
This isn't a long book with each page only having a few sentences or two yet I felt it gave just the right amount of information. Fans of Jane Austen will appreciate how beautifully presented this book. It is a gorgeous addition to anyone's bookshelves. And those who don't know all that much about her will enjoy learning more about her life and the times in which she lived. Perfect as a gift for the literature lover in your life, this book about Jane Austen was an absolutely pleasure to read.
This is a beautifully illustrated biography, the perfect gift for a lover of Austen. I wouldn't say it reveals anything new and there is a list of works consulted if you'd like to read more in depth as there was only a few sentences on each page. I sat with a cup of tea and enjoyed reading little tidbits and looking through the illustrations.
I adored this cute little book. ADORED! It is so much more than a cute coffee table book. It can be used as that because the art is fantastic and anyone would probably love to flip through it, but it also tells the story of Jane Austen’s life so well. It is short but comprehensive given its length, and it even includes quotes from her books and letters. I don’t think a biography about Austen would ever be completely without quotes from her letters, and was pleasantly surprised when this tiny book had some. I am probably biased because I love Austen, but I don’t even care! If you want a cute coffee table book with some substance and adorable art or a super cute gift, please do yourself a favor and buy this book!
I have to say that this isn't a type of biography I expected it to be, but I didn't mind it at all — I really enjoyed reading this lovely book. The illustrations took my breath away. I also learned more details about Austen's life. If you are a big fan of Jane Austen, you'll probably know all of this information in the book, but it's worth reading anyway — you shouldn't miss those beautiful illustrations!
A lovely little book I borrowed from my mom (huge JA fan) and read with my daughter (new JA fan). Excerpts from Austen letters adorn the concise descriptions of chapters of her life’s surprisingly astute summaries of her books, and reflections on the class and gender politics of the time through lived experience. Great watercolor illustrations.
The illustrations are so lovely! Much of it reminded me of scenes from Virginia Lee Burton’s The Little House, a favorite of mine. This collection would be a great introduction to writers and artists for children.
This book brings out far too much nostalgia for me to be able to write an objective review. It makes me miss the semester I spent in England something fierce, and calls all the memories rushing back: wandering the streets of Bath with friends; letting the salt-thick wind whip my hair in Lyme Regis; running back to the Jane Austen House Museum, rain streaming off my oversized coat as I hurried to buy a postcard of her writing desk and dashed back to the coach, packed full of my waiting professors and classmates.
My semester in England was one of the best periods of my life. Jane Austen has always been one of my favorite authors. And the lovely, simple text and illustrations in this miniature illustrated biography capture all of those emotions so beautifully.
It's not a complete biography, and isn't intended to be. It touches on the larger moments in her life and creates a compelling portrait that provides just enough detail to make you want to seek out more. The art complements the writing perfectly, in a way that makes this little book a must-have for Austen's fans.
When you realize your life is turning out like Jane's and you're more than okay with that: "All around her, people were getting married. And the subject of money was never far away." Gorgeous illustrations and script throughout. Thumbs up!
