In typical Sophie Hudson fashion, Giddy Up, Eunice is laugh out loud hilarious while accomplishing the perfect balance between encouraging and challenging.
I loved Sophie’s other books (A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet & Home Is Where My People Are), but this time around she weaves together personal stories with Biblical stories about duos of women. This is a timely read (and a good reminder in our online culture of likes and hearts) that friendships are to be cultivated and treasured. We may have differences and we each have a role to play, but life is so much better together.
I do wish that the amount of time spent talking about each of the duos were more even across the board... Mary and Elizabeth got 6 chapters, Ruth and Naomi have 4, and Lois and Eunice are at the end of the book and have 3. Although she spends a page or two explaining why Eunice is at the end, it's strange to me that the book appears to be about Eunice from the title but the stories of the other women get much more "print time." Of course, those stories are impactful as well. But it feels a bit misleading, which I know Sophie is not. Perhaps the title will attract potential readers and get them to stop and read the book, though.

I love the heart of this book. The subject of intergenerational women's relationships is important to me but I didn't feel like Hudson had anything new to say. And although I am a Eunice by her definition, the book didn't feel like it was written to me. I found her style annoying and immature.

The style is overly folksy and familiar for my tastes, tho I know there is a market for that. But I love the idea of cross generational friendship and mentoring. I appreciated the deep looking into women's friendships in the Bible.

Loved this book. Have been sharing the title with many women in my life. As a woman in my late 30s, because of ministries I have been involved in, there is value here for many ages but especially those in their 30s and up who need a swift kick in the pants to remain steadfast in our work to mentor those in stages of life a step or two behind our own. I loved Sophie's balance of humor, scripture, and heartwarming thoughts!

The premise of this book thrilled me as I have been studying the lines that divide women of different generations and/or life stages. However, I was disappointed with the actual execution of this book. Finishing the book does not make me feel like I am any closer to being able to tackle those dividing walls. Sure, the author referenced a need for it as she bounced from story to story to story, but where is the practical application? I still feel just as lost as I did before I started reading.
Maybe some people will appreciate her voice. Maybe some women will enjoy her humor. I was looking for practical and, sadly, did not find it within these pages.

This is a great audiobook! The author reads it and you just get a little something extra special when you listen to her read her own words.
You will relate to this book if you:
1) Have ever loved chicken divan, Amy Grant, fried okra or 80’s TV
2) Lived in Mississippi
3) Had a mama who loves to cook
4) Have anyone in your life who calls you darlin’ on a regular basis
5) Love hanging out with women older or younger than you and wondered why they were so keen on spending time with you, too
6) Love to laugh
This book meant so much to me. Almost all of the above apply to me, but I was a little leery about reading this book because I thought, despite the fact that the author and I are both Methodists, that there was probably a wide gap between the philosophies of our respective churches. And while there was a little bit of that, her message was mostly that we need to love, respect, relate to, learn from and be in community with one another. Those are things that I try to do every day. No difference there.
P.S. Just realizing that I made a list in this review. Sophie would be proud. I make a lot of lists.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The only reason I didn't give it four stars is that for me it wasn't a revolutionary concept. This is how our church already tries to live and love.
That said, I had fun with her writing style. It was down-to-earth, funny, and loving. I do wish she hadn't apologized as much, though. "Sorry for sounding bossy, but..." Or, "But these are just my thoughts, do with them what you will." She would say something with real weight and power, and then she would take away that power by apologizing for it or excusing it.
My favorite parts were when she talked about Martha or her Mama. They both sound like such sweet women, and she told beautiful stories about them.
In short, it was a fun reminder to love and lift up women around us instead of living in competition with them, to learn from those who have more wisdom than us, and be willing to graciously share what wisdom we have with those who have less.

I loved this book so much! This book emphasizes the importance of female relationships, specifically in the context of mentorship and multiple generations. When we're in the "Eunice" stage (aka 40's/middle age), so much can be gained by having a relationship with women older and younger than us to help lead and guide and learn from those who have walked a similar path. This book was hilarious (I want to read everything by her) and left me craving both kinds of relationships. I think its definitely the nature of the relationship to have the older one pour into the younger one so finding a "mentor" feels a little tough, but it doesn't have to look any way or another. This book had me reaching out to my aunt just to chat and I think thats exactly what its purpose was. God made us to love on each other and this is a reminder to do just that!

What a delightful yet substantive book. The author is new to me, but I immediately felt we'd been friends forever thanks to the real tone of her writing as well as some similar family health issues we both encounter. I love the 2 Timothy scripture that sparked the name in the title--she may have highlighted the Eunice, but the other name in that scripture, the grandmother, is Lois. My Gramps, who was married to my own Granny, also named Lois, used to read his Bible every night at 9:00. I remember looking through that Bible after he'd passed away and seeing his inscription, "Thank God for my Lois," right next to that scripture. This is a sweet and encouraging book in the best of ways.

Two things I really loved about this book: 1) I felt like I was on the sofa with Ms. Hudson and we were having a conversation in our joint southern ways and 2) She describes so well the cherished relationships of women and how much we need each other. Thanks Sophie (S is what I like to call her) for the laughs and the tears.

I laughed out loud at this book multiple times, but that wasn’t even the best thing about it. The message Sophie is sharing about women needing women rings so true in my own life. As I read I thought back of the older women that have been around as I grew up, it made me want to say a little thank you to all of them.

This is my first BooMama read and I so loved this book! How did I not know she had written books? So many of Sophie’s stories resonated soundly with me! Such good good words about inter generational relationships! Sophie brings such understanding to some of the best women relationships in the Bible. Thank you for making me laugh out loud and want to be more authentic with my small group girls and those women in my life who are my Lois’s!

After growing so fond of Sophie Hudson listening to the Big Boo Cast podcast, I had a suspicion this book would be an enjoyable and conversation-starting read for our Bible study. Sophie, and the book, did not disappoint. Giddy Up, Eunice takes a closer look at three cross-generational relationships in the Bible. Sophie's down-to-earth insights into the relationships between Mary and Elizabeth, Ruth and Naomi, and Lois and Eunice had our group of seasoned Bible study girls deeply appreciative of her fresh observations. Sophie mixes in many personal stories that not only have you giggling, but tearing up from time to time. Sophie's writing style is conversational, Southern, and highly relatable. Though I couldn't find a set of companion discussion questions for the book, I found we didn't need one. Our group unanimously loved the book and the discussion flowed easily. I did find a 15-minute conversation between Sophie and Kelly Minter based on Giddy Up on Youtube and shared it with our group. It was a perfect way to recap our conversation.

MY THOUGHTS
This book is good for the soul, heart and every inch of the reader. When you're feeling down you can go back and think of some of the parts of the book and you may find yourself smiling or even laughing.
Women need different things than a man can provide. A woman needs a woman's insight, company, understanding, ability to tell you when you're wrong (but in a nice way) just plain being a FRIEND, a true friend. Someone you cry on their shoulder and they can cry on yours. Not that you will totally understand but you listen and that is what a woman needs. Someone to listen. Someone to urge you on when you feel like giving up. When you don't have that, it's so easy to want to give up. The book uses scripture about relationships of the women in those times.
The author adds humor, scripture, sarcasm and tells it like it is. That's refreshing.
If you're in need of a pick me up or a little encouragement, GO BUY THIS BOOK!

Sophie Hudson's latest book hits a chord with my passion for discipleship - or in simpler terms - women investing in women. Sophie takes a look at three pairs of women - Mary and Elizabeth, Ruth and Naomi, and Lois and Eunice - as she talks about how God created women to need other women. This isn't an expositional deep dive study into Scripture, and that's ok. Sophie points to the lives of these women and how God prepared them for their individual journeys and how He prepared them for each other. The book is replete with so many stories from Sophie's life, that you feel like you are right across the table from her, drinking sweet tea and dabbing tears. If you've ever had a woman invest in you - from your family or otherwise - you'll cling to these stories as they stir up your own emotions and life experiences. This is a must read for every women, no matter the age, who need a kick in the pants to quit gazing at their navel and reach out to other women.

As a 21 year old newlywed, this book isn't really "for" me. A lot of what the author talks about relates more to women my mother's age than it did to my life. That being said, I'm glad I read it. It made me more conscious of the girl-to-girl relationships I have, and gave me an urge to form new friendships, and strengthen old ones. It's a funny book, and really focuses on biblical truths. I agree with what another user has said about it almost being like a Bible study. I would (and have) recommend it to friends.

I was somewhat confused about the message of the book. I think it was encouraging women to mentor and rely on each other. I’m not sure this is a new concept. I found myself thinking several times that there was going to be a point to a story she told about her mother or mother-in-law, for example. Then there was really no point to the story. It also meandered quite a bit. I would not recommend this book.

Written in a light-hearted, easy-to-read style, this is an important book. I'd like to recommend this to every woman friend, small group partner, Bible study member, family member. The topic of multi-generational friendships is so dear to my heart. I am so thankful for what I have learned from women older and younger than myself. I will be re-reading this again.

Let me be honest. I didn't read this book when it came out because of the title. I never even read past the title to what the book was about. It was too goofy for me. Recently, as I was trying to find something to give to a friend of mine, the cover flashed in my head. Then I ran across it and actually read the premise. I thought, oh, I need to read this. So, I bought a few copies.
Sophie is a great author. Maybe you remember her from A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet.
I loved that book. This one did not disappoint either. I needed to read it because I was reading some other heavy books and even though Sophie deals with hard hitting subjects, she does it in light-hearted story form. Sometimes, she drives me crazy because she says "like" a whole lot and then I start doing it and annoy myself. Past all of that, she has such a way with communicating things.
I have been going so hard all summer and ended up neglecting myself, especially my heart. I needed to be reminded of the beauty of friendship and how it nurtures our spirit (to give and receive). If you follow me on the interwebs, you'll know how much it all spoke to me. Here are a few screen shots.
I read that 60% of women in church feel lonely. Reading all of the quotes above, I was reminded of why people are so important. We need each other. I am thankful for the people who take the time to love me and those who let me love them. As she shared about the women generationally behind and ahead of her that are part of her life, I became very thankful for mine. These pages are packed with humorous, convicting ways to minister to the generations around us.
What stopped me dead in my tracks last night at the end of the book was when she started talking about her mama acting funny, withdrawing from people, not doing what she had always done. I knew what was coming. Her mama was diagnosed with dementia. Oh the pain of having someone be there physically, but withdrawing in every other way. I have been wading through this pain. It seems like personality shifts often and my help is not wanted. This is our new normal. It's not normal at all, but we have to trust God with it.
Read Sophie's book. You won't regret it. You might even become a better friend.

This is my first time ever reading a book written by Sophie Hudson. I'll admit that I had never heard of her prior to randomly picking up a copy of Giddy Up, Eunice on a trip to Hobby Lobby with a girlfriend of mine a few weeks ago. The tagline "Because women need each other" drove me to read the introduction, which led me to actually purchasing it.
Unfortunately, beyond the introduction, I found the rest of the book to be lackluster. I'm not sure if that's because I already have friends across multiple generations, so nothing she said was new to me. However, I do enjoy her writing voice because I can tell that she's being authentic to who she is. Also, the tone of this book isn't preachy, which is a plus given the topic; even though I felt like she tried to squeeze too much out of the scriptures that she used to divide the book into sections. Because of this, she ended up making a lot of inferences about the relationship between the women in each passage. I can't be mad at her though. Everyone interprets the Bible differently.
Nonetheless, I would read another book written by Sophie Hudson, if she releases one about a topic that I'm interested in. I just hope she chooses a more fitting title the next time around.

This book is so impactful that I wish I could buy a copy and gift it to every woman I know, especially those who have a heart for women’s ministry in churches. Hudson speaks to the ever present (growing??) need for community among women. She mixes in completely light hearted (and some serious) moments from everyday life while also taking readers through a journey of three very unique female duos from scripture. Specifically, she examines the relationships of Ruth and Naomi, Elizabeth and Mary, Eunice and Lois.
She reminds us that in an ever connected world, people - women specifically - are feeling less connected. She offers practical ideas to stay connected with others - both by pouring into them and by being the one who needs ministering from time to time.
The author offers no “outs” for any woman, regardless of age or stage in life. In a society that can both devalue aged wisdom AND trivialize youth, Hudson underscores the importance - the urgency - of loving each other and supporting each other.
If you’re an audiobook fan, I highly recommend listening to the audio version because Sophie Hudson narrates, and the experience was all the more rewarding because of it.

This is my 3rd? Sophie Hudson book, and it's a good un. It may not be my favorite of hers (I really liked "Home is Where My People Are"), but it's up there. I have bought more copies of this title to hand out to my friends than any other book ever, so that's saying something. I love the insights into female relationships she shares in this book. She discusses 3 Biblical female friendships: Mary and Elizabeth, Ruth and Naomi, and Lois and Eunice and explores how important it is for these friendships to reach beyond generational boundaries, how each generation should speak into the others before and ahead of its own. Favorite part - when she wrote that God gave Mary Elizabeth because He knew she needed someone who would understand. Beautiful!

This book helped my life. It totally changed the way I treat myself and the women around me. Sophie was so relatable and funny. Unlike some similar books I've read, the humor didn't appear forced or something. Everything was so real, just the way they should be. She laid bare the things that we should be doing as women in order to stay united instead of separated. She used the stories of some women in the bible as case studies. And among all these women, I effortlessly identified with Elizabeth and I took away with me, her humble service towards Mary. It's a story we all need to fall back to whenever we find ourselves pulling away from that life that we should be living as women.

I loved this book! It was a very enjoyable mix of biblical and real life examples of how women can and should show up for one another! I found myself laughing out loud and shedding a few tears too. It made me want to be a better friend and to broaden my definition of friend. Sophie makes a very convincing case for making friends of all ages and stages of life! A dear friend of mine handed me this book to read(thank you, Sallie) and a dear friend of hers(thank you, Tamra) sent it to her. Guess I better keep the love going and send it to another dear friend. I think Sophie would be pleased for that is the point of the book....we women need each other!
