A couple years ago I applied for a part-time job as a tour guide at a historic cemetery not far from where I live. Why? Well, aside from the fact that the job would force me to step away from my computer and remind me that there was a life beyond writing (even in a place where just about everybody was dead), I love cemeteries.

No, really. I mean it. I really love cemeteries.

Think about it. A cemetery--I mean a really good old cemetery, not these new “memorial parks” where every headstone is flat to the ground and every one of them looks the same--is really a museum without walls. Take a peek into any cemetery that’s more than sixty or so years old and you’re bound to see interesting architecture, sculpture and art. There are stories, too, everywhere you look. One memorial can give you a glimpse into generations of a family’s history. Another might suggest tragedy. Still others speak of undying love and precious memories.

Is it any wonder that a writer’s imagination is bound to take flight in a cemetery?

That’s exactly what happened to me. I didn’t get the job, by the way, but as I drove home from the interview, I did get the idea for Pepper Martin, a cemetery tour guide whose enthusiasm for cemeteries does not rival my own. After all, what could be more perfect that an amateur sleuth surrounded by dead people? And if she just so happened to be able and see and talk to some of them, all the better!

I learned to love mysteries early thanks to my dad, a Cleveland Police detective who enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes stories and spent his days off searching for stolen cars. Often on those trips, I was in the back seat and to this day, I have Dad to thank for my knowledge of some less-than-savory parts of the city. Later, I read my way through every mystery story I could get my hands on. Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle are still among my favorites.

I have a degree in English, experience as a journalist and writing teacher, and lots of ideas for more Pepper Martin mysteries. When I’m not writing, I’m usually with my family and our two dogs, Ernie, an adorable Airedale pup, and Oscar, a rescued Jack Russell who spends far too much time watching TV. I enjoy knitting, gardening and of course, stomping through cemeteries in search of history, stories and inspiration.

Pepper has drawn the attention of a not so glorious ghost, Eliot Ness. he was a glorious lawman in life but in death his ghost is just a sparkle. His remains need to be found to make him whole. There are forces that want to avoid that, mainly a nasty gangster with a huge grudge, Al Capone. Al Capone is not one to go easily and Pepper will face hurting the ones she loves the most to protect them and herself.
I enjoyed the book, but it wasn’t as fun as previous books in the series. There was less humor, some weird moments in the beginning with her standing in a muddy pond bed. I’ve missed Pepper and her ghostly mysteries. I enjoyed her quirky interaction with the other side, but missed the history I’ve read in past books. I really don’t know much about the gangster or the lawman and would have liked a deeper connection to the why so angry question. I loved the new characters Calab, he is a complete mystery that I can’t wait to explore. I felt a bit discouraged towards the end by a decision Pepper made and how quickly it was just gone. This was a transitional book for Pepper and her group, I am hooked waiting for the next book. You really can’t miss this one in the series things are a changing.

I can’t wait for the next book to see where Pepper goes she is going to one of my favorite cities.

First, I want to say that the description of the book gives away too much information of the book. So, I have removed the part of the description on my review here on my blog so that it's less revealing. Luckily, I must have skimmed the description before I started to read the book since I only had a vague idea of the book's story. And, I like it that way. I don't want to know too much!

Anyway, I found the book to be quite charming to read. It actually felt like just the perfect book to read at the moment, a cozy mystery book is always nice when you have read heavier or darker books. Graveyard Shift is the first Pepper Martin book I have read, and I admit that it was Eliot Ness that caught my attention. I found the idea of his ashes being stolen quite interesting and people seeing ghosts is always intriguing. I had no problem getting into the book, despite no previous knowledge, instead mentionings of previous cases, etc. just made me interested in reading previous books. Pepper Martin was easy to like. However, I found her mother quite annoying and I wished sometimes that Pepper would just tell her to stuff it! Quinn, Pepper's boyfriend did I have some trouble warming up to. I don't know, I just didn't find him that interesting. Perhaps I will grow to like him if I read more books in the series.

The case in itself was not earth-shattering mysterious. It was perhaps a bit too easy to figure out (especially if you have read the description) what would happen and there were no great twists to the story. But, I liked the book, the story was easygoing and charming and I definitely recommend this series to people looking to read a cozy mystery series with a paranormal touch!

I want to thank Severn House for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review!

I kept waiting for our library to get copy of this and they never did so had to do inter library loan. It was good. I was disappointed only with the title as I have always enjoyed the play on words with the other books in the series.

As a fan of Pepper's stories from the beginning, I was very excited when I was given a copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I wouldn't have to wait longer to see what's happened in the 4 years since the last book.

Well, time past in the book is not the same in the real world. It's just been a month or two since the last story ended though Pepper's relationship with Quinn seems to have changed more than that time span would warrant (again it's been 4 years since the last book so maybe my memory is faulty).

Unfortunately, the writing didn't live up to my memories. I still liked the book enough to finish and consider reading the next one, but it's a marginal like (more like a 2.5 than a 3 star). Pepper was fine and not over the top, but the status of her relationship with Quinn felt off, the party her mother and Ella had for her was strange and added nothing to the story (though I appreciated Ella's daughters' reactions), there's a new character who is both sketchy in personality and as written (lack of detail) that was off putting and the ghosts of Elliott Ness and Al Capone were under utilized. A much more exciting story that used the ghosts better and incorporated their personalities more could have been written though I did find the groupie scenes and the effect their obsessions had on others interesting and unusual to find in a story.

An outstanding paranormal and a chilling mystery that will have turning pages until the end which might surprise you as it did me. I am not sure I like it. Pepper has a gift that allows her to see ghosts. parts of Elliott Ness appear to her asking her to find the rest of his ashes so he could rest in peace. Her friends and Mother begin acting strange around Pepper, a couple of them tried to kill her. Who is the ghost who is able to take over bodies? What does he want? Who is the stranger that is introduced? Pepper must find Ness' ashes to bring her life to normal. How does Pepper defeat the new evil? I highly recommend this book.

Disclosure: I received a free copy from Severn House through NetGalley for an honest review. I would like to thank them for this opportunity to read and review the book. The opinions expressed are my own.

Well, Pepper's back, which is good. That she's back in hardcover from UK's Severn Publishing, not so much. These books are TREMENDOUSLY overpriced and I would not spring for another. I only got this one because I got a used copy on Amazon for a little less and I had a gift card from the holidays. Off that soapbox, the story was a pretty good one. I'd call it 3.5 stars, but since you can't do half stars I'll go 4. Must say I HATED the way it ended. Absolutely HATED it!! I realize the author is trying to spread Pepper's wings. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

I received an e-ARC of this novel through NetGalley and Severn House Publishers.

Have you ever read a book that just tied you up in knots when it came to assigning a star rating? Well, this story #10 in the Pepper Martin series was just such a book for me. First off, I had never read any of the other stories but that wasn't a problem, this one can be your first venture into the series with no problem as long as you know it is going to have long-running backstory characters and themes. My dilemma came about because this book edges much too close to the "cozy" mystery line and I don't normally enjoy the cozy sub-genre of mystery novels: that's a minus. But on the other hand the basic paranormal premise was intriguing to me and at least the author had not Name Branded each item described in the book: that's a plus. Then there was the trick device the author used in solving the mystery: that was a minus. But, there was also the fact that it took really good writing to carry off the situation the author got herself into by introducing that trick device in the first place: that was a plus. See what I mean??

Pepper Martin is a ghost private investigator -- or, she works for ghosts to solve their mysteries. (Somehow I don't think that job will end up paying Pepper very much money; maybe she's just satisfied that she can be of some help.) Naturally Pepper works at Garden View Cemetery, but she wouldn't last a week at her job in the real world because she's constantly late for work, she doesn't work on projects unless she feels like it, and she doesn't return phone calls. This job gives her the ability to meet lots of ghosts, some of whom need mysteries solved for them as does the ghostly character in this novel, Eliot Ness who can't fully (ghostly) materialize because most of his ashes were stolen and he needs to be reunited with them so he can pass along. Let's just say that this story has good ghosts and bad ghosts and leave it at that.

I tend to be a very literal person. In this book the author sets up the story by saying that the pond/lake in the cemetery has been drained and Pepper wades out into the middle of all the mud and debris in order to take pictures of the cemetery from that angle which they couldn't do before. Well, why not? Why not just take a rowboat or a canoe or a kayak and get your pictures that way? And after Pepper is standing on the ground at the center of the lake she is snapping pictures like crazy from all angles. Sounds good, yes? Well, what about the fact that the lake was six feet lower in the middle than on the edges and the only thing she could see was the roof of the chapel? When I come across something like that in a book my mind starts going 90 miles an hour trying to figure out why the author didn't see the total implausibility of this situation and fix it before it ever got into my hands. Jerks me out of the book good and hard and makes me wary of everything that comes afterward. Unfortunately this incident happened at the opening of the book.

See my problem? I finally settled on four stars because I did keep reading all the way to the end, I wanted to know how the problem was going to be solved and I can now allow Pepper to investigate to her heart's content without me bothering her again.

This is my first book.by this author and I enjoyed it immensely. I will be backtracking and reading all the others in this series but it wasn't, to me anyway, required to be read in order as I got enough out of this book not to feel lost.

I like the character, Pepper, and her mom and coworkers. Her boyfriend, the detective, and also the ghosts that she deals with daily. The Eliot Ness and Al Capone are the reasons I chose this book to read when it was listed on net galley and I was not at all disappointed.

It's full of action, some humor, love and loyalty and it seems that the author is adding to the regular group if ghostly friends.

I cannot wait to read more. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Graveyard Shift is the tenth book in the Pepper Martin series by Casey Daniels. I have read several of these books, but somehow missed the last three, but feel like I was able to catch up pretty quickly. I do not suggest going into the series cold, but if you missed a few I think you will still be able to fully enjoy the story.

Pepper Martin, now Community Relations Director of Garden View Cemetery, is contacted by the ghost of Eliot Ness, one of Cleveland’s most famous dearly departed. According to Ness, the ashes scattered at the ceremony twenty years earlier weren’t his. His were stolen prior to the ceremony by a Ness groupie, and he cannot rest until those ashes are found. Luckily, Pepper has an idea where they may be. Knowing she’ll have no peace until she does what the ghost wants, Pepper travels across town to retrieve the ashes. When she gets there, though, she finds more – and less – than she bargained for. There is a dead body in the house and Eliot Ness’s ashes have vanished. Pepper sets out to solve the murder of the man in the house where the ashes were supposed to be. But when a mysterious package arrives for Pepper, containing the spirit of Al Capone, and her boyfriend Quinn begins acting strange, things go from bad to worse.

Graveyard Shift is another installment of the Pepper Martin series, and offers few surprises. I missed a couple books- and so missed some of the relationship development between Pepper and Quinn. However, I think I was able to catch up quickly as far as that goes. I had missed the reintroduction of her parents too, that took me a bit longer to get used to. I liked the larger mystery- getting to delve into a gangster related mystery again was fun, even of we were on the right side of the law this time around. My most common complaint with cozy mysteries is when I expect a big twist long before it is revealed, and that did happen here. However, there was also the introduction of new characters with personalities and implications I was not expecting. I liked the pace of the mystery, and the danger Pepper finds herself in. I think the story offers good entertainment, and I was thinking about what would need to happen next when I had to put the book down to deal with necessities (like feeding my family) but overall it was not as enthralling as I had hoped for.

Graveyard Shift is a quick read that offers followers of the series exactly what they expect, and are looking for. It was a entertaining read, but nothing that stood out to me in a genre that I have been reading more and more. It was fun, and a nice diversion- but did not stay with me after I finished.

Oh my God this can't be the last book in the series. This can't be how the story of Pepper Martin ends. I loved the story line Al Capone is back wrecking havoc with the living. I love that Quinn and Pepper are in love but I so hated the ending. What where you thinking Casey Daniels to leave this story like that. I really wished we could have seen so much more of this series. I am so going to miss Pepper and Quinn.

Pepper Martin is back still working in the graveyard and fielding requests from ghosts. She is out checking out an old pond when Elliot Ness lets her know he needs help finding his ashes. Seems like an easy job till she goes to pick them up and finds a dead body and no ashes. When Al Capone shows up things go from bad to worse. I like these Paranormal mysteries but this one seems to be a little more violent than previous books. I also don't like some of the decisions that Pepper made in this book but hopefully she'll rectify them in the next offering.

We have been waiting for a new Pepper story for a while, and Casey Daniels has delivered a spirit spine tingling story, that will keep you on the edge of you seat and turning the pages.

For me this story was just a pure joy to read. And now I want to go back and re-read all the books in the series, again.

A good addition to the Pepper Martin series, just sorry we had to wait so long for Daniels to write it!

Anyways, for those who don't know about this series, it is set in Cleveland in "Gardenview Cemetery." Think Lakeview Cemetery -- a Garden cemetery (Google it, this is a real thing). Awhile ago, Pepper Martin got conked on the head or bumped her head on a gravestone, and now she can see dead people.
In each book, Pepper meets someone else where she must solve a crime relating to them. In this story, the mystery surrounds the ashes of Eliot Ness.

It's a good solid (or as solid as it can be with all of these spirits hanging around) story. Check it out to learn more!

I've waited a long time for Pepper Martin to come back. And boy, am I happy she did! This time Eliot Ness needs Pepper to find his ashes, so he can finally Rest In Peace. Filled with mystery and history that I've come to expect (& love) with Casey Daniels. Some new characters and twists that I didn't see coming! I'm looking forward to more Pepper adventures!

I really like Pepper Martin. She works in a cemetery leading tours. She also sees ghosts; ever since she fell and hit her head on a tombstone. In this title, parts of the ghost of Eliot Ness asks her to find the rest of his ashes. When he died, his ashes were supposed to be sprinkled on a lake in the cemetery. But, only some of his ashes were used. Pepper feels that since she can sees ghosts, she should help them. As this series has grown, her reputation has grown among the dead who have problems and can't move on. Some of Pepper's family and friends know about her ability; some of them accept it better than others. Unfortunately for Pepper, Al Capone's ghost uses possession of people around her to interfere with her search. And, some people die or are attacked, including Pepper. When Capone takes possession of Pepper and attacks her boyfriend, she makes a difficult decision. Can't wait for the next one. Also, I think I missed a couple. So, I've got to check on that too.

I was an avid Pepper Martin fan several years ago but this last book rather disappointed me. I don't remember how I felt about the main character but at this point I don't think I like her much. I found her petulant and she grated on my nerves. That said, I still awarded this book 4 stars (rounded up from 3.5) because of the mystery and the twists in the storyline. I also liked the way the story ended in a cliffhanger. I might consider reading the next book in the series if there is one but only because of the new character that was introduced.

Finally!!!!!! After waiting for what felt like for ever, could have rivaled George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones author). We finally get the next installment. I would say that it was okay. It still had the humor , quirky characters and a good story line . I did expect a bit more of Pepper's love life. That way we could see how her relationship is evolving. I still love the series and can't wait for the next one.

Another fun mystery with Pepper and her gang
I admit I got distracted while reading this so it took me a while. But when I knuckled down, I really enjoyed it.
However, I hated the ending. It was unexpected and out of the blue and I hate change. I hope her story will continue to engage me but I'm not sure about the new direction it looks like it's taking. She's a great writer so I'm sure I'll be enthusiastic, but I just need a little time to mourn my old story line.

Unfortunately this one is not as interesting as the last books. Her mom only thinks of a wedding and tries to get Pepper into going to Bridal activities which she does not want to. Her boyfriend, Quinn, is acting strange and not like himself. She also has a ghost who wants her to find his real ashes so he can go on since someone stole his ashes and only a small portion made it to the grave.

A disappointment in a generally enjoyable series, for several reasons. First, Pepper's mother is all-out wedding, though no engagement is in sight. Second, this misadventure revolves around Ness-Capone, but seemed to me to have less information about them, perhaps because of the nonsense with the mother.

I did not enjoy this installment as much as the other books. The new character Caleb was very annoying and seemed unnecessary. It seemed like the author was setting up a love triangle which I hate. I don't like Quinn so I was glad when they broke up even though they will probably get back together.

So worth the 5 stars. I love every book she has written. All amazingly beautifully written. You easily fall in love with the characters. You laugh, you cry you even want to yell at times. An amazing mix of a cozy mystery with spookey, fun, loveable Ghosts.

Possessed by Evil

When Pepper meets the spirit of Elliot Mess, her problems begin. She and the people she loves are stalled and used by a vengeful spirit of Al Capone. The are great characters and exciting twists to the plot. It was a fun read.

A good way to spend a few hours. I liked Pepper from the first book. Don't know about mom and dad yet.

Pepper Martin is a good way to spend some few hours. I liked her from the first book. Casey Daniels has put her in a variety of places and 'ghostly situations'.

2.5 - ugh I struggled with this one a little and I went back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. I loved the premise of the book and there were parts I really enjoyed but there were so many things that bothered/annoyed me. . . And some definite leaps.
