Inarticulate

Rate this book
He’s silent—but his touch speaks louder than words.

At first sight, Savannah is drawn to the harsh appeal of a man who refuses to talk to her. Keenan’s hard stare is arrogant and unapologetic. The quirk of his sensuous lips is cocky and in control.

But there’s more. There’s something deeper he’s trying to hide behind those steely grey eyes—a slight hint of vulnerability which captures her intrigue.

She’d been warned, told that his silence hides a myriad of lies capable of affecting her career and relationships with loved ones. Only she can't help herself. Testing Keenan's defenses is an addiction she can't deny.

Falling in lust is easy. Learning his secrets comes with a price. The cost? Her broken heart.

Secrets in the silence...

Look, I know love isn’t easy at the best of times. What if the person you are starting to have feelings for doesn’t talk? Do you trust the sexual tension? Can you believe what you think you see in their eyes? Is it better to trust in the silence or look for your own answers? In Inarticulate there is more than one mountain to climb to reach the top. How can you trust your heart to stay safe when you don’t trust the person you are giving it to?

I struggled with this story, to be honest. For the first 25%, I wasn’t convinced that I could get past the lack of communication. I started to question whether it was going to be a book about setting aside your normal reservations and morals to “get it on” with a sexy and mysterious guy. So, I stopped. Then, I tried again…and broke all the book reading rules.

See, I needed answers and to know that the journey was going to be worth it. Don’t hate me…but I skipped to the 75% mark and read till the end. Then, I was still questioning stuff, so I went back to the 50% mark and read that part. Of course, you guessed it, I went back to the 25% mark and read from there. So in essence, I pretty much read the book back to front. Weird, I know, but in the end, it worked for me. All the puzzle pieces got laid...just in my way.

So, I read the whole book (in my own special way) and liked it. Would I have liked it more if I’d read it like a good little girl? Hmmm, not sure. Each quarter had its own special bit to offer and I was able to still get the whole package. This is all because I hate surprises and I’m very impatient. I probably wouldn’t recommend reading it this way, but like I said it worked for me.

I don’t want to go too much into the storyline as I don’t want to give anything away. I will say that it made me question what I would do in similar circumstances. Would I be as tolerant and patient when dealing with someone frustrated by their limitations? Can I see myself forgiving someone who hurt me by making decisions purely to protect themselves? Very, very tricky.

The author is probably going to kill me for writing such a crazy review. I decided to be straightforward and admit that I broke the rules. BUT…it worked for me and I still managed to finish the book with a smile on my face.

When an author takes you out of your comfort zone and transports you to a new world, it feels like a high. You're nervous, excited and down right scared, but that free fall becomes everything to you. "Inarticulate" had all the makings of a unique beautiful storyline that captured your heart and made silence, the most loudest voice possible.

Savannah has been pretty content with her professional life. But when a hotel settlement goes wrong, she's sent to Seattle to do damage control. Knowing that she has family ties with an employer has not made her a camper and she's quite frankly dreading the trip.Determined to fix the hotel's mess, she soons arrives in Seattle and meets the brooding Keenan.

His silence and mystery intrigues her.

But what happens when she learns he's keeping a huge secret from her?

Keenan has never been good at socializing with strangers. He doesn't speak so not only is communicating with new people difficult, but having them wanting to know what happened to him is feat all on it's own.

Meeting a gorgeous woman who's first impression of him was being a first class a**hole, he found that encounter to be refreshing. Not only did this woman have him intrigued, the attraction level was level off the charts.

 photo tumblr_niync6VCqb1s1syb2o1_500_zpswmw4ijjg.gif

I really liked the connection between Savannah and Keenan even though they got together rather quickly. It felt genuine and I loved their text messages to each other. Savannah was a strong heroine and I admired the fact that she stood up for herself and didn't take crap from anyone.

I would've loved to read more of Keenan''s pov because he was such a unique character and I wanted to see his thoughts in certain scenes. These two definetely did not have an easy road for them and having it paved with lies and betrayal, didn't help.

Was their love worth it? Read it to find out.

This story is straight up OK for me. Keenan was a hero with those kinds of contradictory character traits that make the best book boyfriends, but he was a bit flat for me as well. Once everything started to come together it was a pretty good book. If you can stick it out until the end, you will enjoy it!

THIS. BOOK. WAS. FANTASTIC.
INARTICULATE blew me away with its unique storyline and its SWOONY and SILENT hero. Best Eden Summers book TO DATE! One of the best hero/heroine coupling I've read in a long time. Just fucking incredible. Eden, I'm so FREAKING PROUD of you!

Savannah and Keenan's story captures and intrigues. It will thrill and romance you. You will become enamored by page one and will continue to get sucked in with the great writing, unique plot, and incredible characters. Your heart will break on multiple occasions, but Ms. Summers gives us an ending that is sure to mend your heart and fill you with so much warmth.

"I've been hurt by words before, Keenan. But never have they inflicted as much pain as your silence."

You will be blindsided more than once. Be prepared for your jaw to drop and for curses to fly out of your mouth. It's shocking, sexy, and seductive. It's EVERYTHING I want in a contemporary romance and then some. In the past, Eden Summers gave us gorgeous rock stars with filthy mouths...get ready for Keenan...he will seduce you without saying a damn word. He will entrance you with his eyes and his touch. Nothing will prepare you for the pull you will feel from this character. Simply amazing!

Ugh. Why. Did it have to be this book?! To be quite honest, I'm so disappointed in Inarticulate.

As soon as I read the blurb I wanted the book in my hands.

It said this:

At first sight, Savannah is drawn to the harsh appeal of a man who refuses to talk to her. Keenan’s hard stare is arrogant and unapologetic. The quirk of his sensuous lips is cocky and in control..

description

And then this:

She’d been warned, told that his silence hides a myriad of lies capable of affecting her career and relationships with loved ones. Only she can't help herself. Testing Keenan's defenses is an addiction she can't deny

description

I wanted the broody hero with a troubled secret and all of his A-hole tendencies that came along with it. Hey, don't judge me, we all have our guilty pleasures. But sadly this book didn't deliver anything that I wanted from the summary.

The hero, Keenan, was just alright. Wasn't a huge let down, but didn't do anything for me. He was wishy-washy for me. Just bland.

The heroine, Savannah, was extremely immature. I didn't connect with her at all. There were moments when she tried to be tough, but it just didn't work because she was extremely annoying.

To me, the drama was so juvenile. The problems that kick started the feud between Savannah and her cousin Penny was high school level. Get over it. You're grown women now; move on! I don't even know what else to say except that these characters let me down with their inability to be mature and just communicate. Keenan didn't talk at all. That was a big part of who he was as a man, but there was NO background on his condition. And honestly, I like when heroes have some type of physical hindrance because I think that it separates them from the mold of being this perfect six-packed enhanced man. It is usually a refreshing trait, but in this book, it just didn't work. There is a difference to being mysterious and then just be a straight up liar. Also, another thing that made me fail to like Savannah was her inability to be sensitive about that fact that he couldn't communicate verbally. I think she was straight up rude and didn't even try to communicate with him any other way. She just complained that they couldn't talk and have a normal conversation. How shallow can you be?

It seems like my thoughts are unpopular, but just how I feel.

I like the intensity between Keenan and Savannah. They both have emotional baggage and secret that makes them hold back declaring their love. I love Keenan. He is mute but can speak many emotion through his eyes.

Now why the 3 stars? I can not stand the dramatic of writing style. Too much to describe everything. At one point, I just fall asleep. Such a shame for such a good book. the characters chemistry is good. better than good. The plot/ story is promising. I want this book to be 5 stars to me. But I have to settle with 3 stars.

Ow/h's cousin always going to be close friends with and around the H. Their relationship was in the past, but she's still in love with him. They also have meetings alone at his house that the h is not invited to. No thanks, very big pet peeve. We also, I guess, are just supposed to forgive the ow because she resigns herself to the fact the the H loves the h and try's to help get her back. Why would I want to read about the H's ex girlfriend/ fwb trying to matchmake??? The H also talks about the ow's beautiful blue eye and how it hurts him almost as much to see the h cry as it does to see the ow in pain.

The blurb for Inarticulate intrigued me, and once I started reading it, through to when I reached the end, I was in love with Keenan and Savannah (Savvy).

Savannah's first impression of Keenan was "well, he's a hot a$$hole" because he refused to speak to her. In all honesty, I thought the same thing. Little did she know, though, who the real Keenan was and why he refused to speak to her.

Savvy's been warned about Keenan, yet she refuses to listen because she sees through him, to the real him. Keenan's not sure what he really thinks about Savvy, other than she’s smoking hot and dangerous with how she sees the real him. He’s drawn to her like a moth to the light, but no matter how hard he tries to ignore the ache he has for her, he can't seem to let her walk away from him.

Together, they had me laughing, cringing, and wanting to smack some sense into to them, all at the same time. Savvy and Keenan's relationship was tumultuous, sweet and scorching hot, and one heck of a roller coaster.

When secrets came out, there was hell to pay and my heart ached for Keenan. Inarticulate was a beautiful, emotional love story that was truly unique in its own sense. I could not put it down because I needed to know what lay ahead for Savvy and Keenan, and all I will say is it had me sniffling like a fool.

We all want a man who doesn’t talk, right? Lmao. And let me tell you….I was digging all that is Keenan.

This is my first Eden Summers book…..and I have no idea why! I am going to be reading all of her books because THIS BOOK!!!

à la Mode St. » fashion

”How do you do it?” she whispered. “How do you continue to wordlessly convince me to do things I know I shouldn’t be doing?”

à la Mode St. » fashion

Keenan….I was enthralled by him. I couldn’t pull my eyes away. The man doesn’t speak, and I couldn’t get enough of his non-words. He had me captivated the whole book. The brooding. The grinning. The silence. I couldn’t put the book down because I wanted to see what he would do next. I was hanging on his every…..yeah.

My Keenan:

My Savannah:

 :

Savannah is sent to deal with the company’s transition of a hotel and its employees. Because she has family that lives nearby, she plans to spend time with her cousin, and she meets a close friend of the family, Keenan. The meet-cute between these two is so adorable. At first, Savannah thinks he is an asshole because he doesn’t speak to her, but she soon discovers the truth that he just doesn’t speak. So cute. Keenan is irresistible. I dare you to resist him.

à la Mode St. » fashion

I wanted your body, not your words. Your acquiescence, not your intrigue. Most of all, I wanted you to experience passion from my perspective. To strip the sensations down to pure carnality. Devoid of placating dribble and nonsensical dialogue.

à la Mode St. » fashion

The sex is off-the-charts hot!!! The flirting. The chemistry. Gah. This book was angsty, which usually isn’t my favorite trope, but I really enjoyed it.

I have to admit that I didn’t expect the surprise at the end. I was enamored by Eden’s writing style. I am so picky about writing style, and all of her words are so pretty and she puts them together so well = my happy place.

Wow what can I say about this AMAZING book? Well let me start off by saying Eden blew me away with this story. It is unlike anything I have read in a romance novel before. The story is so new and different that I just loved it. This is one book I couldn't put down. I was running into walls and doors because my kindle was glued to my face. This is a must read for 2016, oh hell it is a must read for anytime. Keenan's letters intrigued me and in the end broke my heart. Savannah and Keenan are amazing characters but there are standouts with the supporting characters as well. This is definitely a book that I have to have in hardback form because it is one I will read again and again. The development of the story line and the heat between the characters was right on point. Nothing was filler in this book, Eden made every word count and I wanted more. I wish I could give this book a million stars but I am limited to five. Another Amazing book from Author Eden Summers. You will not be disappointed in this book.

~~~~~~~~~~Lillian's ★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
How do you carry on? Savannah has been set back her boss to make that the hotel deal goes through, she isn't happy as it means that she will need to deal with her cousin Penelope and she would rather not.
Things aren't going well at the hotel staff are leaving in droves and Savannah knows that Penny is too blame, she tries so hard to be the bigger person but it is so hard.
Keenan is drawn to her but he knows that he can never tell her the truth and she will never want to be with him if she finds out that he has something to do with the hotel.
They have fun together and even when she finds out the truth she stays but Keenan is about to break her for good. This lie is huge and Savannah might never forgive him and he misses her but he knows that she will never come back to him.
Savannah is heartbroken she loves Keenan but he lied and really hurt him, she knows that it is time to give up and go on but she still needs him so much.
A great story line, loved the characters from bitchy Penelope, to irritating Spencer to the staff at the hotel that Savannah fought to hard for.
What intrigued me at first is the blurb, the non speaking hero and the intrigue. I happen to like characters with unique traits or disabilities and the way they are portrayed are different for each story. The why, how and little details that make it more realistic. I've read a few books that featured a mute or unspeaking character, there can be multitude of reasons for it as well as many takes on it. Here it's the unknown factor for Keenan's bringing in the mystery factor.
When a hotel settlement goes wrong Savannah is sent to Seattle to iron things out. Little did she know she'd meet silent, mysterious and brooding Keenan. The attraction, her draw and connection to him is evident. If I'm being honest Savvy may not be naïve but a bit too foolhardy when it comes to Keenan. Despite all the warnings given and things that were unsettling ignored, personally I found them not being clearer with what their saying odd for family. She still kept up her hush-hush rendezvous with him even with the red flags. Reminds me of those lifetime movies but I guess that played a part in whole scheme of things. Those things she overlooked and assumed really ended up being her own downfall.
I had a feeling about the twist from the suspicions I had with things withheld, I was really close. I just felt early on he just choose not to talk to Savannah for certain reasons as well, Kenaan's secrets and lies played a huge role in their relationship. When things come into light it may not be forgivable. Savannah has a tough decision ahead. I wish we could see more insight from Keenan's mind or his POV aside from the occasional email which was clever to add.
This is my first book read from Eden Summers though I have an idea of her other works. I liked the writing, plot, story is interesting. The characters were harder for me somewhat for different reasons without giving away much As a fan of dialogue, conversation (even through other means not talking), banter and interactions of characters in other ways I missed that. They did have chemistry and connection only seen by them which makes that better. Keenan's reasons seemed valid and meant something to him he choose the route he took. I wanted a bit more from the ending less rushed but had closure. Overall though, it was likable and entertaining story even if I had misgivings plus the suspense made guessing fun.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I cracked open Inarticulate. But in typical Eden Summers style she had me hooked right from the start.
Reconnecting with family during a work visit to Seattle should have been all it was about for Savannah, but things turned into so much more when she met Keenan.
Keenan is all silence an intrigue - and that piques her interest a lot more than it should.
This is a story full of lust and passion, with a whole lot of mystery and lies thrown in the mix. While Keenan and Savannah have chemistry out the wazoo and steamed up my kindle, I could feel that things weren't going to be easy for them.
As disaster after disaster descends on Savannah's work life, her private life starts to imitate, when all she thought was good in her life comes crashing down.
Not going to lie, I wanted to nut punch Keenan more than once as events unfolded, but then I wanted to hug it out with him as well.
Ms Summers kept me on a knife edge with this one, never knowing which way the story would turn next... and I loved that.
This book was like that Ronan Keating song, 'you say it best when you say nothing at all'. What can be said with a smirk, a raised eyebrow, a look.
This was a completely different kind of book from Ms Summers, but one that kept me enraptured through each and every twist and turn.
Now I am impatiently waiting for what she brings us next
This book is ridiculously AMAZING.
First of all, Eden is BRILLIANT. How do you write a romance novel without the sweet yet boringly cliché nothings the hero always seems to utter? Don't let the guy talk!
This nonverbal element added SO much to the book. It was truly a stroke of genius and I loved it. I LOVED IT!!! Different, refreshing, new, WOW!!!
Okay and let's talk heat index: Off. The. Charts. Everything these two did was not only SO steamy, but it was the true affection that was mixed in with the infatuation or lust that made the interactions hot on an emotional AND physical level.
Savannah cracked me up at times. She's so REAL, and when she first tries to interact with Keenan, some of the quips just have me chuckle out loud.
And Keenan. Talk about INTENSE. Everything he did was just so, "I want this and I'm not taking 'no' for an answer." YES.
And holy secrets. Keenan had several huge ones looming and I just could not wait to find out what they were and how Savannah would react to discovering them!
This was one of those books that I stayed up WAY too late reading and finished in record time (for me). I couldn't put it down, and I will forever read ANYTHING written by Eden Summers!
Loved it!!! The synopsis intrigued me but I wasn't sure how I'd get into a story where the hero is mute. Then I started reading and remembered how much I love this authors writing! Her style is so smooth and crisp, no filler with lots of dialogue (even with a MC that doesn't speak!) and never a dull moment in the story. I absolutely fell for Keenan. I wanted to slap him a time or two as well, but mostly I adored him. Savannah was an amazing heroine too... Not a wishy washy chick just a girl who saw someone mysterious and acted on her feelings. The tension between these two was heart stopping, the chemistry was palpable and the intimacy between them was scorching. I was giddy for much of his book and there were some stomach dropping moments too. It was just a great mix of all emotions and that's what I loved most about it. The story was is definitely unique and I highly recommend this book!!!!
Having read and absolutely loved another book where the male character didn't talk, I was eagerly anticipating this one.
This was my first book by Eden Summers and initially I found myself drawn into the story. However I eventually noticed that not a great deal was happening besides an awful lot of to-ing and fro-ing of Savannahs feelings for Keenan. I literally had whiplash from the amount of times she changed her mind. One minute she'd be all 'I can't deny these feelings any more' to 'Me and Keenan just aren't right for one another' and this happened over and over. So much so that it actually made me apathetic towards the two.
Despite Savannah trying to come across as understanding of Keenan's situations in this book, I found that she really did have concerns towards some things which made her appear unsympathetic.
Savannah and Keenan's chemistry wasn't as electric as I'd hoped, although I did sense it underlying. Unfortunately it just didn't peak enough for me.
To me Keenan came across as a liar and a manipulator and his methods of communication or lack of just weren't believable to me, especially in the early portion of the book and it also made it extremely difficult to get a feel of his personality. Eventually Keenan was able to communicate somewhat which made things more dynamic between the two.
Overall I just didn't get enough of a feeling towards the couple and to me it was just like a song that at first appears catchy, but you soon realise never actually gets going, which to me is a shame as the basis was there for this to be a great read, but sadly there just wasn't enough belivability for my taste.
Original Review @ Naomi’s Reading Palace
I've read a lot of books by Eden Summers, but this one has shot to the top of my favourite list! I found myself emotionally connected to Inarticulate quite quickly. I loved that Keenan, the hero in the story, wasn't your typical guy, he had a flaw that you couldn't see at first glance. But what I loved the most was that the heroine, Savannah, was able to see past that to the man that he was beneath the surface. It was a journey of self discovery for Savannah as she fought to find her place in the world in a new city, even if it was temporary.
Savannah was sent to Seattle because of the upcoming sale of the Rydel hotel to Grandosity. She was there to settle the unease running through the staff and to smooth over the sale. She had a connection to one of the staff members at Grandosity, but it seemed to cause more problems for her instead of making things easier. What she never intended to do was fall for a guy, who was dark and mysterious, and seemed to awaken feelings in her she never thought she had.
I loved watching the relationship between Savannah and Keenan grow. There were a lot of hurdles for them to overcome, each one bigger than the next, but there was no denying that they had explosive chemistry. Keenan did everything he could to make Savannah feel special. Savannah struggled because of her connection to another person, but knew in her bones that Keenan was it for her. But secrets have the power to destroy everything if they fester for too long.
The book was told from the third person perspective, following Savannah's point of view for about 90% of the book. There were emails woven into the story that were from Keenan, so I was able to get glimpses into his perspective as well. Inarticulate isn't your typical romance; it was a brilliant and touching read, where the relationship developed quickly despite the differences between the characters. I enjoyed it so much that I know the characters are going to be on my mind for a long time to come!
Savannah works for Rydel Hotels. Her ex boyfriend Spencer, is the heir to the hotel chain. He made some mistakes but he's arrogant enough to think he can win her back. Too arrogant if you ask Savannah. Savannah is being sent to Seattle to deal with a problem. A problem her boss volunteered her for because it involves her cousin Penny. It seems Penny is the main problem.
Savannah arrives in Seattle and is forced into a family dinner where she meets Keenan. She is instantly attracted to him. Talking to Keenan is like talking to a brick wall. Literally. He's gorgeous and sexy, but he's either deaf or arrogant and so full of himself that he doesn't respond. He seems to be hearing her but not caring enough to answer; even though he can't seem to take his eyes off her. That changes quickly when Penny enters the picture. Penny hasn't changed much. Well maybe she's become more bitter. It seems she still resents things that happened when her and Savannah were younger. Too bad Keenan seems to be acquainted with Penny also. Penny is not happy about the attraction between Keenan and Savannah. It looks a though Savannah may have an even bigger fight on her hands besides the hotel problem. And Keenan knowing Penny, seems to be only one of the many secrets he's been keeping.
As soon as I began reading chapter one, I was hooked. Savannah and Keenan had undeniable chemistry and I was curious to see how it would progress. Keenan is devastating handsome, so sure of himself. Savannah is smart and gorgeous and was unable to resist her attraction for Keenan. She knew she should stay away, but the pull between them was too strong. The emails were an awesome addition to the story. They gave insight into feelings and into the future as well.
MYSTERIOUS, GRIPPING, EMOTIONAL & UNFORGETTABLE
These are the four words I would use to describe this book. BRILLIANT is another. Eden Summers has given her readers a book that simply MUST NOT be put down, until they have read the final words. It was SUPERB.
Savannah, a strong willed yet vulnerable woman, works for the Rydel Hotel Group and her ex-lover. She is sent to Seattle to oversee the final weeks of transition in the sale of the Seattle based hotel. This is a move that will alter her entire life, when she meets Keenan, on the porch of her aunt's house. A man who intrigues her and who she will never forget.
Keenan, alpha-male, mysterious, possessive and very very silent. He works for the rival company that has bought the Seattle Hotel, but in what capacity? Why does he remain silent? What is his relationship to Penelope, Savannah's cousin? He falls for Savannah, hard, but he also betrays her with his silence.
This is only the second book that I have read, where one of the main characters fails to utter a word. But don't let that put you off. Ms Summers has written a beautiful story that will remain in your heart forever. It would have to rate as ONE OF THE BEST FOR 2016 that I have read. My emotions were twisted and turned in every direction. The emails Keenan send to Savannah throughout the book broke my heart, and the final email Savannah sends him had tears flowing uncontrollably. (Yes tissues are definitely needed!)
Eden Summers I commend you on your bravery for writing a character such as Keenan. I will definitely be reading more of your works.
The story has laughs, secrets, betrayal, suspense and heartbreak. I was pulled right into this short story.
This is Savannah and Keenan’s story. Keenan does not speak. He has secrets and in the end is everything these secrets hiding going to destroy Savannah? Keenan is able to be open around Savannah’s cousin but not her. This leaves Savannah to walk away feeling betrayed. Can these two get past the secrets and lies in order to build a relationship? Or will other people get involved to make sure that does not happen? These two have a passionate chemistry that one touch makes them explosive but can that passion help or hurt them in the end?
I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I recommend this book.
***Listened to this book on audible. Narrated by Maxine Mitchell who did a great job. You could feel the emotion in the reading which sometimes with audible is hit or miss. Great story to begin with but the voice she gave it made that much more. A lot of times with listening it makes the story come alive. Like I stated sometimes depending on the voice it's hit or miss but this voice what perfect for this story.
WHAT A FITTING TITLE
“Keenan wasn’t merely a man. He was above and beyond. He was one in million, someone unique and fascinating."
~~ Yes he was, but miscast in this book as a tormented caricature because withholding his secrets so long prohibited burrowing beneath the surface angst to know and understand him until the very end. You see, he was fooling us all along, but we didn't know ... or why. It's a big gamble to sacrifice an H for the sake of a conclusive, big reveal.
The blurb and sample had me absolutely over the moon. Though dissimilar, it gave me some Archer’s Voice vibes about a mute hero, which is rather a unicorn in romance books. It started out blazing strong – 5-stars actually – with a broody and mysterious H who says far more with his eyes and body than a voice ever could. He had the silent act down pat. It was lust at first sight between enigmatic Keenan and hotel exec Savannah who comes to town for a 3 month transition during sale of her company’s hotel to a larger, glitzier hotel chain. Keenan has surprising ties to her cousins, Dominic and Penelope (a hotel exec with the hotel buyer), in the same city.
From the outset, it was steamy hot (even I felt sweaty). Both had an incurable case of lust – like Body Heat, modern-noir steam. Who is this mysterious Keenan? “Cold and calculating. Mysterious and intense.” What does he want with Savannah and what is he hiding from her? His intense glare follows her everywhere and she senses his presence like a phantom limb. I was in full-blown fanning my face mode when the story slowly started to do the downward dip. Their communication (or lack thereof) is a cross between Keenan playing the silent card, mouthing his words, texting, and using charades-style sign language. Not to worry. There’s not much to suss out anyway. Literally the first 60% is one sexy tryst after another. Just horny bliss. Side characters are so infrequent that I even forgot their names. Who needs mundane language when two people speak the language of love so fluently with their bodies, I guess.
Savannah brought more superficial conflicts and emotional baggage with her than suitcases -- her nasty ex (son of the hotel CEO boss) just waiting for her to screw up and resume their one-sided romance. Good old cuz Penelope – NEVER call her Penny -- has a hate thing for Savannah over a boy rift in high school. Tangled, but meaningless. It soon is obvious to Savannah that Penelope is tied intimately to Keenan, but he isn’t sharing what it is. Penelope’s jealousy festers as she sabotages Savannah’s transition duties, which forces the lovers underground to keep their affair secret. Nothing could thwart the “insanity of her [Savannah's] emotions for him” apparently, except the TRUTH. And therein lies the rub …
I was so into the story setup -- the sneaking around, danger to her job, and mystery of whatever Keenan was hiding. They were falling hard in unspoken love, but played it off as sex without strings, despite genuine feelings shining through. And still, execution faltered. All the mystery about Keenan, Penelope, and his secrets were overplayed – especially, his avoidance about being mute. Savannah mistakes him as a manual laborer. Assume much? Though his close friend, Dominic keeps warning her away from Keenan. Why? Frankly, it was a heap of buildup that kept Keenan at a distance. A wedding at the hotel and it's horrors was thrown in as story filler, but there was no reader investment in it. At the end of all that tease was a revelation that I guessed from the beginning. How Savannah handles the secrets and truths made her shallow, self-centered and lacked empathy for him. Everything in her head was all about her. Keenan works his ass off to get her back, when he should have kicked her to the curb. By end, the story only rated 3 stars, despite mad love for Keenan who was still a moron for wanting her in spite of the awful way she treated him. So self-absorbed that she never asked the right questions or saw what it was in front of her. I wrote her off as a paranoid nut job for assuming he conspired against her when his secrets had nothing to do with her and she wouldn't listen to him, or didn't care.
And there were errors. Why the nickname Savvy when no one uses it? Continuity mistakes, like smudged makeup when she wasn’t wearing any. Lines like “The virginal buzz of professional defiance made him all the more alluring.” Decipher, please! Even time-frames didn’t match up – they were together for several weeks, yet apart for the same time period, which didn’t track. What really knocked Savannah off her pedestal was judgmental insensitivity about the reason for Keenan’s secrets and his shame, which were purely personal. While they were in pound town every day, nothing mattered to her except the physical. Yet when she found out his truths, it was a different story. After she threw his truth back in his face as a backhanded compliment, I was done. Her true colors were superficial, and she was undeserving of Keenan. His secrets were not a reason to abandon him or berate his actions. What a grade-A bitch. And when he took her back without batting an eye I actually thought less of him, and I swear I popped a blood vessel. That girl was ever the emotional wreck and selfish downer to the very end, and her threats were all bluffs. Ooh, and the wrong person apologized profusely for their behavior. Ironically, her final words were the only thing that redeemed her, but it was too late. She totally wrecked the story with bratty, immature behavior. I was dying to know their ages …
Was given this book with the promise of a honest review.
Savannah and Keenan, both drew me into a life I have no knowledge, yet he is hiding more than not being able to speak. Savanna is in Seattle on a business trip, one mainly to oversee the changing of ownership. Old things come to bear on this trip like her cousin Dominic and his sister Penelope. Savannah and Keenan, both drew me into a life I have no knowledge, yet he is hiding more than not being able to speak.
The story was fascinating it was a world foreign to me, either the issues Keenan has, I have encountered but this close, the characters were lively and lovable even the ones you hate that you come to love them any way. I thoroughly enjoyed this story that made me forget my own problems and made me smile.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 2, 2016
He’s silent—but his touch speaks louder than words.
At first sight, Savannah is drawn to the harsh appeal of a man who refuses to talk to her. Keenan’s hard stare is arrogant and unapologetic. The quirk of his sensuous lips is cocky and in control.
But there’s more. There’s something deeper he’s trying to hide behind those steely grey eyes—a slight hint of vulnerability which captures her intrigue.
She’d been warned, told that his silence hides a myriad of lies capable of affecting her career and relationships with loved ones. Only she can't help herself. Testing Keenan's defenses is an addiction she can't deny.
Falling in lust is easy. Learning his secrets comes with a price. The cost? Her broken heart.
REVIEW: INARTICULATE by Eden Summers is a stand alone, romance story line focusing on hotel PR consultant Savannah Hamilton, and Keenan Black.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Savannah and Keenan) using present day and alternating time lines, INARTICULATE follows Savannah Hamilton on an emotional and heartbreaking journey when our heroine discovers that silence covers too many secrets and lies. When the Rydel Hotel empire for which Savannah works struggles with the upcoming sale of some property to another hotel chain in her home town of Seattle Washington, our heroine is assigned to micro-manage the staff as employee morale begins to spiral out of control. Savannah returns to Seattle with a bit of a chip on her shoulder as it pertains to the past, and some preconceived notions about the man with whom she will fall in love. Meeting Keenan Black, her cousin’s friend and possible FwB, throws all of Savannah’s caution to the wind as his silence draws our heroine like a moth to a flame. What ensues is a building but potentially forbidden relationship between Keenan and Savannah, a relationship that falters not once, but twice when Keenan’s secrets begin to unravel.
Keenan Black doesn’t speak and in this his silence is designed to protect more than his heart. Keenan’s backstory is a mystery to our heroine and yet, his entire life is an open book to Savannah’s cousins Dominic and Penny who know there is more to the man than Savannah could ever imagine. Secrets, deceit and betrayal, will force our heroine to walk away when everything about her relationship with Keenan Black is based on more than one lie.
There is great sexual chemistry between our leading couple; touch and expressions can convey more than words. The romance is intimate, intense and emotional but there are some undisclosed secrets that Keenan refuses to acknowledge, keeping the reader and the heroine in the dark. Keenan is a charismatic character whose persona is strong and intriguing.
The majority of the storyline is told through Savannah’s third person perspective. Keenan’s thoughts and desires are expressed through touch and facial expressions but we also get an insight into his emotions through some emails and texts. There is also the potential for a love triangle building throughout the story, another conceivable conflict that could destroy Savannah’s heart. Too many obstacles including work related issues, simmering family dysfunction, and heartbreak and betrayal spread our heroine’s life in too many directions.
INARTICULATE has a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Savannah’s cousins Penelope and Dominic Augustine, and their mother aunt Michelle. Dom is one of Keenan’s best friends, and Penny is a woman determined to keep Keenan for herself. We are introduced to several hotel employees, as well as Savannah’s boss Mr. Rydel, and Spencer, her one time FwB, and the boss’s son. Keenan’s father is difficult at best and I was hoping for some more insight to the father and son relationship dynamic. I am hoping for a future story line for both Penny and Dom.
INARTICULATE is a passionate story line; a look at one man struggling with his own personal demons, and a woman consumed by the silence and secrets. The premise is inventive; the characters are animated, colorful and flawed; the romance is fated, emotional and moving.
I’m not sure what I expected going into Inarticulate, but I was definitely intrigued by the blurb. I’m in a bit of an unusual position now, having to admit that I struggled to get through it in some places while I almost devoured it in others. So let me start by saying first that this book was very well written. Eden Summers has a way of weaving her words elegantly, and this book, given the constraints of the hero, absolutely warranted that type of writing skill. Unfortunately, though, for as much as I was able to appreciate the author’s undeniable writing talent, I still found this story to be, at times, almost frustrating to get through.
My personal tastes when it comes to those stories that I’m most drawn to tend to be the ones that are more dialogue centric. Obviously for this story, there wouldn’t be any spoken words or bantering or back-and-forth, but while the hero didn’t verbally communicate, he did have a lot to say. But it was one of his main methods of communication with Savannah, given his limitations, that I found to be a bit exasperating. I had a hard time accepting that entire conversations between this couple were had gazing into each other’s eyes and reading the emotions there.
I’m purposely being a bit vague here, and for that I apologize, but I don’t want to offer any spoilers here. There were some twists and turns that I really don’t want to give away. I had issues with a few other plot points as well, but primarily, I think it was actual conversations between the Keenan and Savannah that I was missing. Disappointingly, this lack of dialogue was replaced with long – very long – internal monologues. I totally believe that some internal dialogue is necessary in any story to give the reader insight into a character but, more often than not, these lengthy monologues tipped the scale into rambling and were just too drawn out for me.
The thing is, though, that Summers managed to create a wholly interesting, enigmatic, mysterious character in Keenan, the hero, and she did it, unbelievably, without him uttering a single word. That in itself was an incredible feat, but it was made even more so because while no actual words left his mouth, he still had a lot to say. I had a bit of a tougher time warming up to the heroine. Savannah was almost dispassionate, having just extricated herself from a complicated, loveless, colleagues (not even a friend!) with benefits situation. She was presumptuous and, at times, judgmental, and it was exactly those qualities that were the driving forces in her culpability.
Again, this book was beautifully written, and there were a lot of things I did like about this story. The plot was interesting and there was an unusual element of suspense to this book that was fresh and different and very well done. Keenan and Savannah positively sizzled together; their chemistry leapt right off the page. There was intrigue and secrecy, and it was what drove the plot along and kept me going – I wanted to know what was going to happen! – during those parts where I was frustrated by the wordiness of those inner monologues.
Inarticulate wound up being a bit hit or miss for me. Fortunately, there were enough hits to keep me going to completion. I’m coupling that with the stellar writing and giving Eden Summers’ Inarticulate 3.5 smooches.
Let's see if I can *ahem* articulate my thoughts on Inarticulate
First off, this is a riveting story. That Summers was able to make a character, who couldn't speak, so compelling was a feat. I was fascinated with Keenan and completely under his spell from the get-go. I could tell there was more than meets the eye with him. He was enigmatic and not only because of his silence. The way he was able to communicate through body language and facial expressions was awe-inspiring. Who needs words? But I could also tell he was keeping secrets and that made me sad.
Savannah, on the other hand, was exactly what you see if what you get. Her forthrightness was admirable, honestly. She knew how to provide people with what they needed - calming or placating, etc. - but always did it honestly. She was able to see beyond Keenan's inability to speak and fell for the man underneath.
The secrets - I admit to being nervous about the reveal. I had figured out one in a general sense but some others were shocking and I appreciated that. The romance as a whole and all the circumstances around it kept me engaged with Savannah and Keenan. It was exciting, a refreshing foundation for a relationship, and it was nerve-racking wondering how things would go.
I do wish some of the romance development had taken place on page rather than off page. I felt it would have made me feel their connection more strongly had I been privy to those happenings. I also wish I'd had more time with Savannah and her cousin, Dominic, because I liked their dynamics and it could have added more to Savannah's character.
Overall though. I thoroughly enjoyed Inarticulate. It was unlike anything I've read before due to Keenan's disability. But I really liked Keenan and Savannah and the minor characters as well, It's been awhile since I read Summers and I think I need to add more of her work to my queue.
