I appreciate the authors effort to dispel a narrative that ignores the US’ responsibility for causing the unnecessary suffering of the Cambodian population for purely political means.
However, it would be unforgivable for a modern reader to take anything else from this book as it wildly misreports on the nature of the Khmer Rouge regime: not only does it excuse the Khmer Rouge of their heinous crimes, but it in fact panders to the leadership for their “achievements” in avoiding famine (categorically false).
It is laughable to read that some of the authors’ sources are high-ranking Khmer Rouge themselves, and it is therefore impossible to take their book as a serious piece of historical scholarship.
