William Green (1927 – 2 January 2010) was an aviation and military author, following service with Britain's Royal Air Force, where he wrote for the Air Training Corps Gazette (later to be become the Air Pictorial).
Green was Technical Director to the RAF Flying Review, and then Editorial Director when it became Flying Review International. In 1971 he and Gordon Swanborough jointly created the monthly Air International, of which he remained Managing Editor until late 1990.
Green edited numerous editions of Observers book of Aircraft and spent most of his adult life doing research and writing on aircraft and aviation. His work Warplanes of the Third Reich is seen as a classic aviation publication. Along with Gordon Swanborough, he also wrote several books for Salamander Books including The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Worlds Commercial Aircraft, Illustrated Anatomy of the World's Fighters and Flying Colours.

Ok I rated it highly as a nostalgic favorite. There was a brand new mall and a brand new B Dalton bookstore in St Louis. Fellow history loving friends and I slobbered over all the books in there. For a teenage birthday my Mom asked me what I wanted and I said this book, it was $4.95, ($3000 now if adjusted for inflation). She had 5 kids so it wasn't real cheap but she got it for me and I read it dozens of times. And I still have it, Thanks Mom!

Mine is the 1965 edition. Covers the favorites Bf109, FW190,Bf110, Hurricane, Spit, P40, P38, etc.

My copy of Famous Fighters of the Second World War is the 1957 edition, with a foreword by Group Captain JE 'Johnnie' Johnson. It gives brief histories of 17 fighter aircraft of WW2, all supported by well many well chosen monochrome photos. There are also numerous artwork illustrations by GW Heumann. Whilst it is not surprising that there are many omissions in the text, there are also many errors, although some I hope are corrected in later editions. Nevertheless, an interesting and enjoyable read.

WW2 Aircraft Details

A good book I recall reading as a kid in the 60s now available to me to enjoy again. Lots of details for the armchair enthusiast.
