55. ill. , several by Lewis Carroll. 5 fig. Very detailed. Lots of psychological insight into her and those around her. Attempts to capture the acting styles and details of performance - of her and others, and history of the English theater. Many famous people will be found here - Lewis Carroll, Oscar Wilde, Henry Irving, Bram Stoker, Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse. It becomes turgid and overly detailed at times to my taste, but it's full of information. The author relied on her descendants as well as printed sources. It's a scholarly work, not a pop biography. I have no way of judging the accuracy, and haven't read other books on her to make any comparisons.
