Most of these stories are based on actual accounts. They all focus on a dark epoch in Germany’s World War II. The central figure is most often a child or adolescent trying to make sense of the behavior of adults in the midst of frightening changes in everyday life. These stories are about intolerance, ignorance, cowardice and moral failure. They also depict small acts of humanity, of humor and love, flashes of light which stood out in that time of shadows.
I can not say that this was an enjoyable read but I recommend it to all readers. It is a small book (158 pages) full of meaningful stories of children who lived thru WW II. Their stories of living and surviving in Germany will touch your soul. It is quite amazing to realize how some survived and led fairly normal lives after experiencing the horrors of war first hand!
