Kenneth Grahame was a British writer. He is best remembered for the classic of children's literature The Wind in the Willows (1908). Scottish by birth, he spent most of his childhood with his grandmother in England, following the death of his mother and his father's inability to look after the children. After attending St Edward's School in Oxford, his ambition to attend university was thwarted and he joined the Bank of England, where he had a successful career. Before writing The Wind in the Willows, he published three other books: Pagan Papers (1893), The Golden Age (1895), and Dream Days (1898).

This was my family’s third try as a read aloud, and as they say, third time’s the charm. We read a lot of books together and although I didn’t dislike the book and my kids did sit this time and listened without groaning (the first two times when I ditched it they did) it just wasn’t our cup of tea. I am glad we finally read it. I had never heard the story before, but it just wasn’t our favorite.
As a read aloud there is a point I wanted to make to whom ever is the reader, the sentences in this book are long. It makes it difficult to pace your breathing. Also, I think the longer sentences made the book difficult to get into. My children listen to a lot of books and read well, but the sentence structure did not add to the cadence or the quality of the read. It just seemed an authorial preference and maybe as a silent read to oneself it would be fine, but it was a struggle the first few days we sat down to this book.
Also, the book didn’t seem to know what kind of book it was: sentimental, a friendship adventure story, a fairy story, a story about an arrogant toad. It felt disjointed.
I am happy to have the book read. I know it is a much loved story by many and for that reason it’s comforting to be able to share this book experience with such a large readership.
