It takes valor to support and love those who need it the most and never expected to receive it.

For Rivet Scalzo, returning to his childhood home after a decade and a half was not on his list of places to go while recuperating. After nearly being blown up on a mission, Rivet is forced to deal with his PTSD and sudden deafness without help from Vigilance, the secret governmental agency he works for. He resigned himself to a lonely recovery, but then, perhaps by chance, he met Blare Chaplynn, a model whose caring nature helps ease the horror of Rivet’s home life. As they grow closer, Rivet is burdened by the secrets he can’t share with the one man he grows to love.

If Blare knew a mild concussion was all he needed to meet the man of his dreams, he would have gladly accepted it long ago. He knew there was something special about Rivet when he first saw him at the park, but never guessed this man of mystery would be hiding so many secrets close to his heart. Blare is forced to confront the fact that Rivet may never tell him everything, but is trust the reason Rivet is so close-lipped or is it something more?

It is only a matter of time before the relationship falls apart or secrets are revealed.

This is really an extremely sad tale.

Rivet has some major secrets that because of his clearance he cannot discuss with anyone except the ones who have the same secret clearance as him or higher. In many ways I think Rivet is looking for love and acceptance. His mother and sister are horrible and treat him even worse then if he were dirt on the bottom of their shoes. Even so he still tries with them and they always throw it back in his face. They are abusive and border line crazy. But the thing is, Rivet does not turn the tables on them. Instead he takes the punishment they both dole out on him and tries to move on and hide the abuse from the world.

Blair is a breath of fresh air for Rivet. He accepts him almost instantly flaws, secrets, and all. And even though Rivet trusts Blair completely he is still not allowed to open up about the things that weigh on his heart and mind. Finally there is a breaking point and Rivet is allowed to let Blait in completely. The question that remains is will it change how Blair feels about Rivet or will it bring them closer? Can they move past Rivets past or will it tear them apart.

This was a very interesting read. Some parts were really hard to read about but the tragic events in Rivets life led him to where he is now and has shaped him into the man he is.

There definitely needs to be a warning about triggers for abuse, rape, and emotional abuse.

I really, really, really wanted to love this book - but unfortunately, it ended up being a two star read. The story started out with promise - there seemed to be interesting MCs and a plot line that could turn out well. But… the writing and dialogue was very rudimentary, stilted and hard to follow. Another odd thing was the extremely detailed steps Lache went through, to reach “hiding places” - pages long details about codes and hand prints and stairs and locks, and so on… and they were not relevant at all!

Overall, the story didn’t flow well and the plot was all over the place. Everywhere they turned there was hatred and venom being spewed, which was bad (and super unreal) enough, but it wasn’t even in ways that made sense or were relatable. Rivet, the main character suffering from PTSD and part of a government agency, was helpless. At every turn. He didn’t even have a chance to really redeem himself properly.

I was able to finish the book, hence why I rated it 2 not a 1, but I continued on thinking there had to be some amazing payoff at the end (there wasn’t… other than a cliffhanger for book two in the series).

I finished this book, mostly because I kept hoping it was going to start making sense at some point. Unfortunately, I was just as confused at the end as I was at the beginning.

There are so many things going on in this story that I don’t quite know where to start with a synopsis. Rivet is a secret agent. He is sent home to live with his abusive mother and sister while recovering from PTSD. Blare is a model who meets Rivet in the park. Between flashbacks, hallucinations, medication reactions, dreams and real life action sequences, I’m still not entirely sure what exactly happens in the rest of the story.

Rivet is subjected to domestic abuse at home. The police and neighbours work against him. Even two of Blare’s model friends manage to attack and abuse the world class secret agent. I still don’t understand why Rivet was so helpless.

The secret agent side of Rivet’s life seems to involve a series of secret lairs, cool toys and experimental drugs.

While I usually love m/m special ops romance, I found this book incredibly confusing. I came very close to DNFing this story - and I never DNF.

I forced myself to finish this book but I was extremely disappointed in what had the potential to be a great book but fell really, really short.

The story was all over the place and very hard to follow. The dialog was forced. The author went into amazing detail to get us into secret hiding places but then rushed through the really important parts of the story.

What Rivet goes through and puts up with is just awful and I hated reading every part of it. There were a few good characters which helped – Rivet, Blare, Owen, Jonas. The turn of events at the end and Blare’s career change was utterly unbelievable. And while it doesn’t end with a cliffhanger, it is clear there will be a follow up story here.
