For young Birdie Frost making a difference in the world was all that really mattered. Working her way up as an intern for a production company that commissions film-makers to make documentaries on subjects that are bringing a positive message to the world, she is set in her ways. When she is assigned to work on a documentary that profiles a rock star, all that she has ever known and believed in gets challenged. What she didn't know was that the world she wanted so desperately to change turned out to be her own.
Darci Doll writes the kind of clean and sweet romance stories that have always lined the shelves of the childhood home. Busy working on the next story, Darci hopes to build a series of books that will introduce new characters and new love stories that hopefully will bring a bit more sunshine and smiles to all the romantic hearts out there in the world.
It isn't often that I can say that I felt connected to a book in a heart and soul manner. This book is it! It is so much that I am honor that I was given the chance to provide an honest review. I obtain this book on kindle unlimited.
I hate it when people say that five star reviews aren't real, because in this instance, you can absolute believe all the 5 star reviews. This book is real.
I wasn't impressed by this author in a previous book, but I knew there was promise. This book more than lived up to the promise of this writer. The love, the story... It was all so beautifully woven into a perfect romance novel.
I loved Birdie and I loved Stinger. I loved this book.
I'm deliberately not telling about the book because you need to read it. It took me about a couple of hours in my day. It was just so good that I couldn't put it down.
The worse thing I can say is the ending happens so fast, but the love story was so great, I didn't care. I was just happy. Great job!!!!
I loved this story, and author of Crushing on the Rock Star Darci Doll has found herself a new fan! What a wonderfully written story that managed not only to provide the romantic element that I always search for, but also touched on topics that allowed me to connect on a deeper emotional level.
Birdie hasn’t had many experiences and is, in many ways, naive in her thinking. When she has to travel to LA to do a segment on an up and coming Rock Star, she agrees only because she has been promised that in return she will be able to pursue her passion project.
Focused on her pet project, Birdie mistakenly makes assumptions about Striker, the handsome man she was sent to interview, and almost ruins the deal to the point where she would have to return home. She makes amends and finds out, as she spends time with him, that Striker is man of integrity and depth. Their connection grows into something undeniable but is, at the same time, inappropriate as Birdie is engaged to be married.
This story touches on companionship, honesty, infidelity, personal growth and loss. The author blends all of these emotional issues into a very positive and engaging story. My favorite scene is when Birdie’s boss explains how love should be. The image of his hands clasping as he gave his thoughts on love touched me, and I appreciated that tender moment as a reader.
This book was adorable and sweet, appropriate for any age reader. I highly recommend it!
Crushing on the Rock Star is a sweet romance, but it also delves into prejudices and work/family relationship inequalities in a subtle way. High-society Connecticut vs. glamorous LA. The role of women in marriage and work. The choice of careers.
Birdie's been an intern, getting little pay, for years until she finally lands a job producing a documentary about a rock band. Her immediate reaction is, "What rock band ever contributed to the improvement of society?" She's about to learn the answer to that and so much more--that perhaps the idyllic life she's lived isn't so wonderful.
I think the major theme of the story, however, relates back to her company vision about changing the world, which begins with changing yourself. As she reviews the documentary about Bernard Klausner, his words touch her soul: “Are you going to be true to yourself or be true to someone else’s idea of you?”
The author has woven this theme throughout the story, making this romance have substance. It’s not hopping into bed from one scene to the next. In fact, there are no sex scenes. Instead, it has the classic romance elements readers of this genre love: an unhappy relationship, passion and understanding, learning to understand your own needs to become your own person. A pleasant read that leaves you with a good feeling.
This book really pleasantly surprised me! I mean, I expected it to be a light, entertaining read, but it went much deeper than that, exploring themes of self-search, following one’s dream despite all the odds, the security of one’s future against the unknown but quite possibly a better one, and many more. Birdie comes from a well-off family and is about to get married to a man, who, just like her father, cherishes traditional household and gender roles. Birdie, however, has other plans than to quit her internship in a producing company and start having children right away, and accepts an offer to go to LA to start a project that will change her life forever… I really liked Birdie; she is a sort of a rebel confined in a ‘good girl’s’ body. She turned out to be much tougher than she thought she was, and that’s a sign of great character development. Kevin, the leading singer in a rock band, was another wonderful character, very far from the regular clichés that authors normally use portraying rock stars. All these components indeed made this novel an extremely engaging, refreshing read. Five stars!
Birdie Frost lands her dream job and wants to be a serious documentary film maker. She isn't impressed when she is given a major assignment and it happens to be for a Great Waste Mind Games. She doesn't realize how boring her life was until she meets Kevin, the lead singer of the band. Soon she is swept up in his world and as she explores an epic romance, she blossoms.
I loved the romance factor in this book. It was hot and sweet and the character development was absolutely beautiful. The writing was clean and fresh with plenty of humor. I would recommend this read to fans of New Adult Rock star Romances. Definitely worth the read for me.
“Like an avalanche of warm passion, the heat from his lips radiated through my mouth and face, through my body and all the way to my toes. As if every cell of my body tingled in the wave of pleasure that swept through my veins like warm water through ice...”
Crushing on the rock star? I’d say I was crushing on this book. It was just the perfect amount of lighthearted; eat pray love, romance that you search for. Oh, Birdie Frost- shakes head and sighs- she can be a little uptight, definitely naive sometimes and even a little secluded, but it’s not all her fault. She has a father who is demanding, a mother who is well, a little ditsy, and an infuriatingly, controlling fiancée who cares more about his work and his appearance than his woman. But all that gets set aside when she is called to be the producer for a rock star documentary. She finally gets the wakeup call she needs from Jake, her boss, and she finds herself going cross country where she leaves her mundane life and finds herself in LA where she meets Kevin, the lead singer of Great Waste Mind Games, who captivates her with his smile and those un-airbrushed electric blue eyes. What Birdie doesn’t know is that this trip is perfect for her. It’s one without restrictions, one that will help her find herself, find out what she’s made of, and most of all discover love in the least expected place. Stinger, aka Kevin McDaniels is the epitome of a rock star, with a twist- he doesn’t run with the groupies, he’s serious about what he does, he doesn’t want to be another stereotype, and his desires run to rock and roll and of course, Birdie. This is definitely a sweet romance full of heart, soul and rock & roll!
A sweet and clean romance book. I enjoyed every second of it. Yeah, you could probably guess how the story was going to end, but it was the writing that made the book so difficult to put down. I loved Birdie. I loved the rock star. I knew Timothy was an ass (even before certain revelations).
Even though it was a romance book, it was also about finding your true self. It was about missed chances, and how you're never too late to reclaim those chances. Everything unfolded rather fast towards the end, but I guess the pace was right. It didn't feel too rushed. Though the book is mainly about Birdie, and not so much on the rock star, it was totally an enjoyable read. Birdie's character development was amazing! It felt real.
Entertaining, short and sweet. That's what this book is all about. It's a feel good kinda story. If you don't want to shed tears and just want something fun to lift your spirits up, pick up this book. It will not disappoint! Darci Doll, you now have a fan :-)
Crushing on the Rock Star is a sweet, clean NA romance about Birdie, a 24-year-old public television show intern who dreams of becoming a producer. Her breakout assignment takes her from her sheltered home in Connecticut to Los Angeles, where she meets rock star Kevin McDaniels.
What I loved most about this book is that both main characters gradually change for the better as a result of meeting each other. Birdie emerges from beneath the thumb of her overbearing fiancé, overcomes self-doubt, and decides to take the risk of following her heart. Kevin throws off the shadows of his past, which were holding him back from fully realizing his musical talent, and opens himself to the possibility of love.
Darci Doll’s writing makes for a welcome and enjoyable change from the typical profanity-and-sex steeped books that populate the NA romance genre. Well done!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a quick easy read that was sweet, fun and enjoyable. We meet Birdie Frost who is a naive, uptight, idealist and desperate to change the world. When her boss Jake pushes her to step outside her comfort zone and take a job producing a documentary about a Rock group, Birdie finds herself on the journey of a lifetime. In walks Kevin, the gorgeous rock star, who happens to be fun, and serious about his craft. He doesn't indulge in the groupies and wants to be known for his art instead of his personal life. All good things with him. The two of them have great chemistry and that made this story entertaining to read. Overall I really liked this book. I thought the characters were interesting and the plot - although a touch predictable - still fun.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A great beach-book read. Having worked in the music industry, the sweetness of the story was at times hard for me, personally, to swallow. But the book is well written and I was able to suspend my disbelief. Then, I could get carried away by the lovely story, and pretend in a world where wide-eyed naive youngsters can marry a rock star. I give it a resounding four stars and recommend it.
I was so immersed and connected to this entire story that I could not put it down. It's about life, love, happiness and making dreams come true! I think we all can relate to this story in our own lives, regardless of what or who we are!
Absolutely adore this book. The nuggets of wisdom alone are amazing. The character birdie is a truly relatable amazing girl. There is so many valuable insights in this truly amazing story. I just loved this book. Amazing author, amazing story. Highly recommend
I am giving this one two stars because it seems like it could really be a good story, but it is in need of some serious editing. I read maybe 6 chapters but couldn’t keep going. It was far too hard to concentrate on the story with so many errors on nearly every page.
I do like the premise of the story and the characters I met in the first few chapters. This author has several other books and seems well-liked. I hope she finds someone who can help her with the editing and make her writing even better. She seems to have real potential as an author.
A really nice story, an aspiring documentary film producer sent to produce reality TV on a rock group while she only likes classical music... The idea is intriguing. Add in a conceited fiancé who treats his future spouse 's "little hobby" with as much interest as he treats her whole person.... More dynamite for a dramatic plot. Add in the inevitable rock star who proves to be a decent guy and a conflict - ridden relationship unfolds. Many true words and deep and serious thoughts to be found. So theoretically it should be a story to keep you up all night. Sadly it lacks the writing style to achieve that. Hence the time it took me to finish. Less would have been more, meaning less explanation of every single action our heroine did and more simple description of feelings. Same goes for creating an atmosphere by describing other people and the surroundings. The story is carried by dialogues and inner monologue more or less. And I have seldom read a book with so many grammatical and orthographic mistakes. Summa summary : good intentions but the performance still has a lot of potential to improve. She actually did it in the pre - last chapter she described the moment the heroine finally came into herself, and there it was, the magical moment. Only to be stomped dead by a proposal that came out of nowhere and presented a typical example of wasting a great moment by the lack of appropriate words. Hence 4 stars for the story, 4 for the characters which were really well developed, but only 1 for writing and editing, which explains the total of 3 stars for the book. Thanks for the free copy, but I was asked for an honest opinion and I have given it. Dear author, if you keep working the way you did in chapter 42,your books are going to be awesome.
If there's one thing I enjoy as a reader it is being surprised by my preconceptions about a book being wrong. When I first picked up Crushing on the Rock Star by Darci Doll, I thought I would be in for a gushing, teenage-angst ridden ride. I'm happy to say I was wrong. What I got instead was a book that offered some real insights into choices and how we make them and ultimately live with them. Our "hero" in this tale is Birdie, a white, middle-class girl, from Hartford, Connecticut, who buried her childhood dreams of being a famous singer, to follow a more mainstream life. Due to be married to her successful, lawyer, fiancee, in just eight week's time, Birdie's life is turned upside down when after two years of interning for a non-for-profit media organisation, she is finally offered her shot at producing and a full-time job. Unfortunately for Birdie, her dreams of making a serious documentary are scuppered when she is assigned to travel across the States to L.A. to set up a documentary with an exciting, up and coming rock band. Totally out of her cultural depth Birdie struggles with her internal conflicts and what is "expected" of her by her family, friends and fiancee and what her heart is telling her. Crushing on the Rock Star is never going to set the literary world alight, but it is a thought-provoking and interesting story that is exceptionally well told by the author. I enjoyed the laid-back and relaxed style of the writing. At just 200 pages on Kindle, it's the perfect length for an afternoon's read. It is always a real pleasure to be surprised by a book and to enjoy something you thought, initially, you might struggle with. Crushing on the Rock Star is just such a book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes their romance with a bit of depth and thought. I commend Darci Doll (so clearly a pen-name) for his/her insight into the issues which ultimately concern us all. What am I doing here? What am I trying to achieve. The book is described as a good, clean, romance and that it certainly is. I am very happy to award Crushing on the Rock Star a highly-commended four stars. It surprised me - in a nice way. Well done Mr or Mrs or Ms Doll. :-)
Light and easy coming-of-age story with a clean, sweet romance added to the mix.
What I loved:
This book was sweet. Plain and simple.
Admittedly, "sweet" is the furthest thing from my personal preference but this story just made me smile.
The writing was sweet. Doll's style is laid back and easy to read. The plot was sweet. Birdie's journey of self-discovery was a well-thought out progression. The main was sweet. Her naivety was presented in such a way that she was still likable (thank goodness!!). The romance was sweet. Birdie and Kevin had a nice dynamic and I enjoyed their dialogue. In fact, I enjoyed much of the dialogue and thought it was very believable.
Everything was just really sweet. Except my favorite character...
Timothy. I LOVED Timothy. Okay, I loved to hate him. But regardless, his character evoked more emotion in me than all the other characters combined.
What left me wanting:
While the plot was quite predictable at times, it was well-paced for the most part and kept my attention. That is, until the final 1/4 of the story. Up until that point, this book was a solid 4-star read for me.
However, the ending unfolded in narrative mode and really lost my interest. I couldn't seem to stay engaged with the story or Birdie, for that matter. I found myself wishing for more dialogue because as I said before, Doll writes some very believable conversations.
There were also some typos throughout but nothing major enough to detract from the story as a whole.
This book didn't make me laugh or cry but it did manage to keep a smile on my face most of the time. I can't complain about that, now can I?
Final thoughts:
I'd recommend this book to contemporary readers looking for a quick, feel-good read with a sweet (yeah, I said it again) little romance thrown in.
“In your head, you think that you’re a conservative but in your heart, you’re a pure rebel, through and through.” (Kindle Locations 1678-1679).
Birdie Frost wants to make a difference in the world through documentaries. She only works as an intern for a production company, but when she gets the opportunity for her big break she hesitates. It’s with a rock band on the other side of the country not with the philosophical world-changer she had proposed. When her family, her best friend, even her fiancé don’t support her decision, Birdie decides to turn down the opportunity at first. Will she be able to set aside everything she’s known to jump at this chance to make a difference or will she stay with what’s familiar and comfortable?
I liked Birdie. She sticks to her guns when it comes to morals. She is dedicated to her ideals and her job. She’s unwilling to let a little failure derail her completely. She is positive and thoughtful. She is a well-rounded main character. Her fiancé, on the other hand, is a complete jerk. The author may be painting him as ‘old fashioned’ but all I see is sexist on-the-verge-of misogynist guy who won’t listen to her opinions or give them any worth. He cuts her off when she’s talking and tells her point blank what she should and shouldn’t do as well as what he expects her to do. How is that attractive?
Birdie tells us that she was attracted to Timothy for his family values and old-fashioned views, but I don’t see how she’s attracted to him at all, even from the beginning. She does not seem conservative, since at the first sign of adventure she’s willing to give it a try and enjoy every minute of it.
The issues in this book are very contemporary and interesting. Birdie’s point of view is so very dramatic and very detailed. She so completely and vividly describes her first rock concert and riding a motorcycle that I intimately know how she feels and can see the scene completely.
Crushing on the Rock Star is a novel by Darci Doll. It is an interesting but really good novel. Birdie Frost loves working for the production company. They are out to help make a difference in the world. She has been working diligently on an idea for a documentary and makes her pitch to do it only to be shot down. The new owners want to go in a different direction while still making a difference. Birdie is given the assignment to do the background work on a documentary for a rock star and his band. A Rock Star! Birdie is astounded. Why would the company think a rock star could make a difference? At first, she refused; but when her job was at risk plus the promise to consider her idea for a documentary, she set out for California to interview the rock star. Entering a different world in California, Birdie is ready to go home as soon as she landed. However, she had to meet the rock star. Unusually for her, Birdie has not done her homework and the rock star calls her on it. She hasn’t even listened to their music! She wasn’t prepared for an intelligent person to talk to! She had done too much stereotyping which was not like her. Can she redeem herself and get a second chance? What can she learn from her rock star? It is a very well written and intriguing book.
Bridie Elizabeth Frost was waiting for her big break and today would be the day that she would finally nail it and be offered a permanent position at Change The World Media. She lands the job, but to her horror, she has to fly to LA and make contact with a rock band called Great Waste Mind Games and see if they are worth making a documentary about.
Bridie lives a very sheltered and controlled life. She is stifled not only be her parents but also by her fiancé. However, she doesn’t realise just how unhappy she was until she met Kevin McDaniels, the leader singer of the band.
This story is one of the most beautiful romance stories I have ever read. I was so engrossed in this book that I was shocked when I came to the end. I honestly didn't notice the pages turning and I felt a little bit bereft when I realised there was nothing more to read.
The story is told in the first person, from Bridie's perspective. I could see her character develop as she gained more confidence, and as she analysed her life and found it wanting. It was all very believable. I loved it.
The story swept me away, and sweet romance does not get any better than this. I adored it. I Highly Recommend.
This was a sweet and delightful story. I read it in one day because I could not wait to see how the relationships would all play out. Toward the end, I would have preferred to 'see' the story unfolding, but for some reason, the author kind of took it to narrative mode, 'telling' us how Birdie's story ends, instead of showing us as in the previous 3/4 of the book. I've never seen that in a book before and am not sure why Darci Doll did it.
There is quite a long, "these are the lessons I've learned" phase where we get to see all the conclusions Birdie came to concerning her life and relationships. This was interesting and left me identifying with some of her conclusions. I wonder if maybe, after such a long soliloquy, the author just forgot to slip back into her previous writing style?? There are a few scenes that return to real, person to person dialogue, as it was in the beginning, but for me, I never quite got that groove back and I'd rather I had.
With that warning, I'd say I recommend this book. For a sweet and clean romance, the developing romance was pretty good and believable. I've read some that are not.
Super sweet romance with something special. The story is about a young filmmaker, struggling to become a real producer. She is caught in the world of post-collegiate interning for two years. She has been a protected young woman. Her parents are controlling, and her fiance is an even more controlling man. This story is all about how Birdie learns to find and follow her heart, truth, and dreams. Despite external opposition and her own struggle to grow, Birde Frost does grow. Along the way, love finds her and opens her up to a more wonderful life that she can imagine. I loved the characters and the charming way that Birdie's re-education unfolded. This book may me feel: I laughed out loud, smiled (a lot), and cried while reading. I felt horrible when Birdie discovered her fiance was a cheater. Though, I was happy that it freed her to have a relationship with a better man. It is hard to say what makes this book so magical and enjoyable. It is a great summer beach read or book to curl up and read with a pot of tea. Still, there is more to this story than your average mind candy lit.
Crushing on the Rock Star is a sweet romance that really felt like a breath of fresh air. Although outside of my typical reading genre, I needed something light and felt this was just the thing. I'm so happy to find I was right! The story follows Birdie Frost, a young intern at a public broadcasting studio whose intent is to change the world. Having grown up in a life of privilege, Birdie has long ago squashed her inner rebel and now does what is expected of her. Eight weeks before her impending wedding, Birdie is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity--interview an up and coming rock band in LA for a potential documentary on how rock music could save the world. There she meets Kevin, a man who looks like a typical front man for rock band--long blond hair and tattoos--but with the soul of a poet. It was lovely to watch their growing friendship begin to bud, then fully bloom. The romance was wholesome and sincere but not sticky-sweet, a fact I greatly appreciated. I enjoyed this book so much I immediately bought another one by this author.
Hmm... not quite sure how to rate this one. I have the feeling that it is more for the YA market than for grown-ups. Having said that, the heroine is an engaging character, and we care about what will happen to her, and we agonize with the choices she has to make. However, there is a touch too much internal dialogue, which takes away from the pace, and the heroine is prone to making a lot of rather banal observations about the places and the people she encounters. The writing itself is good and the dialogue realistic, and the writer is able to create interesting characters. The book also tackles a lot of current problems – the role of women in today’s society, personal loyalty, business ethics, family and marriage versus work, the choice of a mate etc…. But in all, it’s an easy entertaining read – even if the heroine joining the band and ending up in the rock-star’s arms to live happily ever after does tip it into the YA category.
Meet Birdie, a woman who has always done what has been expected of her, even to the point of letting her own dreams fall by the wayside. Finally, after interning for two years she has the chance to take her shot at being a producer, all she has to do is head to LA and shoot a documentary on an unknown band. Simple right? With her wedding not far away, Birdie finds herself learning a bunch about herself, and the people she loves. It is a fast paced story that grabs you by the collar and pulls you right in. From the very first introduction of Birdie I wanted her to succeed, and I was so happy that the story went the way it did. Ms. Doll knows how to tell a good love story, giving just enough away to keep you hooked, while keeping back the ace. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will be reading more from Ms. Doll. Recommended!
The thing that drew me to this book was absence of bed scenes in the name of romance. It get's into the real feeling aspect of the romance, which is sweet, deep, and natural. The idea of looking at yourself from a place outside you--at your thoughts, what you think of yourself and how much that is influenced by how others think about you--is embedded in the story in a very naturally. Birdie's inner journey is easily identifiable by anyone who is open to entertaining thoughts that deserve attention. Her character is developed very thoroughly--an example of good writing where characters are not soaked in monotonicity.
This was a very captivating story that reminded me some of the best classic romance books that I have red.
This is a fun read for young adults about a young woman dreaming of a career as TV producer. To prove herself in a dynamic media world she is asked to cover a rock musician for a reality type project - which is not the type of documentary the 'Beethoven'-fan would like to do. They get off on a rocky start when they meet but slowly come to an understanding.
While this sounds much like your usual young adult romance material, the characterisation is much more founded and the personal development of said characters is slower and therefor deeper than in comparable novels. The growing attraction and understanding between the two is convincing and leads to a much more satisfying romance part than I had expected this to be.
This book had such a sweet effect on me. I found Birdie to be a pleasant character. I was fond of her and her naivety to the outside world and her love life. She was rather conservative and it was nice watching her break out of her shell as she went on this epic journey with the Rock Star. I loved the chemistry between her and Kevin. Their bond - I felt it. It was pretty sweet.
Birdie's fiance, shoot me now, ugh... I hated that man from the jump. Such a pig! But I enjoyed being on the journey with her. Finding her true self and evolving into the person she always secretly wanted to be.
One thing to note, there were a few typos, nothing too bad, but beyond that, I truly enjoyed this story. It's sweet, clean and a feel-good kind of story.
Although not my genre I enjoyed this romance novel. The development of one of the main characters named Birdie was superb !!!! Birdie was brought up in a wealthy family Influenced by other peoples opinions .... The journey with Birdie is so believable and so true to life . She is assigned to do a story on a new upcoming band that claims their music will be world changing. Birdie meets the lead singer, Kevin. Together they look inside themselves to see who they really are and finally realize the gifts and talents they actually possess. An excellent read!!! I applaud the author GREAT JOB!!!
