With all of the zombie novels, movies, and television shows, it's hard to find an interesting angle to break through all of the other content out there. Wrath James White accomplishes this with a killer premise. The novel starts off with an African warlord using zombies as part of his army as he tries to take over his home country. That's not the novel aspect of it. What hooked me in was the idea of forming an underground mixed martial arts organization pitting the reanimated corpses of former fighters against current mixed martial artists. Bill Vlad is the Kaiser Söze in this story, a shadowy figure who many in law enforcement don't even believe exists. Tyler Pope is a man with serious anger issues who falls into the category of doesn't play nice with others. Vlad pays him exorbitant amounts of money to fight zombies in his league. Detective Elgin Washington is the homicide detective who is trying to figure out why former fighters are showing up in dumpstairs with wounds that have happened post-mortem.
As I mentioned, the premise is really cool. Also on the plus side is the way that White describes the fights and training. It's more than obvious that he knows his material, having a background in fighting and mixed martial arts. The more interesting part of the novel is the zombie fighting league, and that is what dominates the novel. The writing flows smoothly and has a real professional feel to it. I also found the protagonists to be well developed. Elgin and Tyler Pope were realistic and vivid characters. Bill Vlad was a little more one dimensional and didn't come off as real. On the downside, there were several aspects of the novel that weren't well explained or believable, such as how does Vlad show up in Africa at the onset of the zombie army with knowledge of how to control them, how they are controlled to begin with, and if he is so hard to find, then why does he do such a poor job of covering his tracks? This was a thrilling, fast paced novel that I enjoyed and would highly recommend.
Wrath James White has always proven to deliver high caliber writing and visceral violence intertwined with astute social commentary. This time, he writes about the mixed martial arts world, something the writer has quite a bit of experience with, and mixes a little police procedural with zombies, underground fighting, and a power-hungry warlord in Uganda. A little too much for a novella, but White, for the most part, pulls it off.
This Severed Press book had a lot of typos that should have been caught and even the main character's name changed at times from Tyler to Taylor. All very annoying. I've read self published books that had better copy editing than this one. Even the back of the book description is a mess. It reads way too long and convoluted. It should have been one short paragraph, enough to get you to want more, but instead, tries to fit the entire book onto one page. After reading it, if I was not a Wrath James White fan, I would never have picked this up based on that synopsis.
But the Severed Press mess aside, this was a fast and enjoyable read with White really shining with authentic fight descriptions. A few fun insider nods to MMA and wrestling should delight those hardcore fans as well as zombie and genre followers. White writes very believable characters and his relationship between Tyler and Melissa helped to heighten the tension as the fight with Lester Broad approached. Solid recommendation. Not a book that will frighten you, but one that should keep you constantly entertained.
four stars is the best I have ever given a zombie novel or novella (this is kind of in the middle). the reason I didn't hate it is because it was not a post apocalyptic band together for survival type of book and although parts where brutal it was not just a case of filling the pages with as much gore as possible either. the whole book was well written, (as is anything by wrath james white) but the fights really stood out. both with zombies and with two people, some of them where fairly long and I could easily play the whole thing out in my head as I read it. I was slightly disappointed that the side story with the warlord didn't play a bigger part in the book, not because I really liked that part of the book as I said earlier I don't like zombie outbreak post apocalyptic type stories and that's more what was going on in that part of the world but the whole thing seemed kind of pointless since the main story wasnt really effected by it much. the ending was good but not the surprise, holy shit I can't believe that happens kind of ending that wrath is the king of. all in all it was a great read and I recommend it wether you are a zombie fan or not.
I knew I would love the mashup of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and Zombies before I even picked up this book. After having read several of Mr. White's stories, I also knew that the subject matter would be given a serious, terrifying treatment but...oh was I surprised at this work! Why? Because I am a splatterpunk fan who got freaked the hell out by this book. Mr. White begins the story in the homeland of Africa, in the dirt and mud of Uganda, amidst the terrors of fanatical warlords with genocidal inclination. A bit personal but well, mix the horror of an insane general who discovers the power of using zombies in his army to a slick, nefarious, (possibly demonic) westerner who also sees wicked uses for the undead and you have one hell of a crisis for not only the CIA but a San Francisco detective. While the General has plans of conquering, the Westerner, Bill Vlad (yeah, wink wink) has notions of profits inside of the steel cage.
The main protagonist of this book is a washed up, down on his luck and desperate MMA fighter by the name of Tyler Pope and while the idea that all he is, all he knows how to do...is fight, the narrative toys with that concept in the dread-filled way it approaches a fateful battle, that you know he must fight! As a reader, my emotions were all over the place following him through anguish, love, hatred and commitment. That emotional roller coaster is just what I love when reading a good, gripping horror novel and the ending....whoa. No mercy for the chicken-hearted. Really, if you love books on fighting and you need a bit of the extreme terror, check this one out!
My first Wrath James White novel. When i first started reading i felt worried that it would be low quality as it seemed to be made solely for the kindle and i cannot help but think that self published e books are not the same as published paper and hard back. Well this book proved my biased thoughts wrong, this was a fun read with a unique and orignal story line. It involves a virus found in the lawless playground of North Uganda when the government forces are in a endless battle with the Lords Army a millitant terrorist group. The lords army find the virus brings back the dead and turns them into zombies. Mr Wrath then switchs to America when the spores are brought by gun runners and used to bring back boxers and fighters to engage in a weird underground zombie cage fighting competition. While there are lots of lose ends the story does flow and is so enjoyable you forget that some of the events would have a much bigger impact then is shown. There is also a side story of a Detective (a black version of Columbo) investigating the disgarded bodies of zombies, which i really loved. Columbo is one of my fave series and its nice to know Mr Wrath likes them too ! So i would recommend this book to any horror fan as it flows well, has great ideas, characters you can relate too and is great fun.
MMA fighting and Zombies. Two genres that I would never have imagined, but then again, I do not have the imaginative mind as Wrath James White. Who else can take two seemingly unrelated sub-genres and mash them up and make them work? No one else that's who. White creates a plausible scenario and breathes some new life in a genre that has been beaten to death, and makes it roar with new life. There is some of the WJW gore that we have all come to love and expect, as well as realistically drawn characters (both alive and dead and alive..and dead again in some instances I suppose) as well a intricate plot that moves along at a break neck clip. You will not be disappointed.
Hmm, there is an African fungus that makes zombies. It gets transported to the US in secret, so some rich whackjob can set up UFC style fighters against former champions who have had their corpses zombified? Sound ridiculous? Duh, of course it is! It may be the most off the wall zombie idea I have ever read. And you know what? It makes for a really great, fast-paced story! So the idea is ludicrous-who cares! Fiction is supposed to be crazy, and kudos to WJW for the idea, and making it so much fun. Main things I liked-first of all, you read this because you want fighting, and the fight scenes are well written. Plus, they are more fun then normal fight scenes, these can have biting and trying to shred flesh, all done with the usual gore that you expect from WJW. Pleasant surprise for me was the protagonist. I will admit to not having much sympathy for the protagonists from some of his other books-some of the 'good guys' have still come off like jerks, and I didn't care that much when they got their asses kicked. Tyler, the main character here, actually is a bit different-not prone to violence to solve every minor matter. Heck, he even tries to avoid conflict on occasion! A nice change of pace for the main character. Only real complaint-the editing by the publisher, Severed Press. It's amateur hour over there, mistakes are all over the place. Needs to be more quality control, especially from an established company. You will have to overlook it when reading the book. Overall, it has all the fun you usually get in a WJW-action, some good gore, and a twist ending. One of his better ones. I will still be hoping he writes a longer book eventually, only problem here, like 'Skinz,' it ended too quickly. PS see if you catch the quick nod to the Gracie family, with the Garcia family in the book.
