THE LONG AWAITED SEQUEL TO CREATURES OF APPETITE IS HERE!
TROPHIES...
Young beautiful women are disappearing. Different types, with different backgrounds, most with a lot of debt, few friends and no close family to speak of. Gone.
Someone is collecting trophies. Only one person can see it. Special Agent Emma Kane.
Kane knows she'll need help on this ordeal. But the only man who can help her, famed profiler Jacob Thorne, is no longer speaking to her. The clock is ticking and Kane is now a target of whomever is doing this.
As Kane gets closer to unlocking the cruel purpose the abducted women serve, the real question is not only will she survive what she finds, but can she handle what she discovers about Thorne and herself?
Emma Kane and Jacob Thorne are back in this thrilling sequel to Todd Travis' pulse-pounding debut novel CREATURES OF APPETITE.
Todd Travis’ interests include conspiracy theories, the poetry of Michael O’Donoghue and pop music and movies of the 80s. He is single and moves around a lot. His current whereabouts are at this time unknown. He dislikes cable news, views cellphones with suspicion and don’t even get him started on email. He also believes poker is not a sport and therefore should never be allowed on ESPN.
5*+95*more stars OH MY! THIS WAS HORRIBLY DELIGHTFUL, I LOVED IT. I LOVE THE 1ST BOOK BUT THIS ONE WAS AMAZING EVEN BETTER IF THAT’S POSSIBLE. I HAVEN’T ENJOYED THIS TYPE OF BOOK SINCE I READ THE HANNIBAL LECTOR SERIES STARTING WITH THE RED DRAGON ALL THE WAY TO HANNIBAL RISING. WHAT A RUSH! I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD FIND ANOTHER SERIES TO COMPARE TO THEM. I HAVE NOW. I COULD SEE THIS AS A MOVIE IT WOULD BE GREAT. MR TRAVIS YOU OUT DID YOURSELF (you are my hero) PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER BOOK SOON. I CAN’T WAIT HURRY UP. HEH-HEH-HEH! ;D
My third encounter with the intrepid detectives Thorne and Kane. This book is more of a Kane's show, though, as she sets off to help with an abduction investigation only to discover a much larger and infinitely more sinister plot at work. This one can easily be read as a stand alone, but it does give away the plot of the first book in the series, so reader beware. Travis is a hoot to read, his mysteries are somewhat simplistic, which is to say the may lack the sophistication of certain other genre entries, the characters can be clichéd, everyone swears like a sailor to prove some sort of innate toughness, the plot might be oversimplified, the antagonists are over the top comically evil), but there is a certain exuberant energy to his writing that makes it a lot of fun to read. And this one has a really great ending too. Expect the language is blue enough to make Picasso take notice, some rape, tons of action. Travis lives up to his initial promise and shows admirable consistency. Very entertaining quick read.
5 STARS Can I get a hell yeah! As a constant reader, I love that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you open the first page of a new book by one of your favourite authors. It’s like you’ve won a prize you really wanted. But there is one feeling that beats it: When you discover a writer you’ve never heard of, don’t look at any reviews about the book and buy it simply because you find the blurb interesting…and when you finish it, you think to yourself that you have to read everything by this author because it was brilliant! It’s like discovering a treasure. This has happened to me twice before, with Karin Slaughter (who is still my favourite thriller writer) and J.A. Kerley. I can add Todd Travis to that list. I loved, loved, looooovvvveeeedddd this book. The only criticism I have is that it gave away the ending of the first novel, but, fuck it, I’m going to read it anyway!
Todd Travis wrote a stunning first novel called Creatures of Appetite with a surprise ending no one expected, followed by an equally entertaining thriller, Sex, Marry, Kill, flawed only by a superfluous final chapter. In both books, he displayed what I thought was a natural talent showcasing a raw writing style where he seemed to throw his words at the page without bothering to edit or revise them. In both cases it worked, distinguishing him from more polished writers who did not share his gift.
Unfortunately in Trophies, which features the two main characters from Creatures of Appetite, Mr. Travis has abandoned the skills which had served him so well in his previous novels; has become a more conventional and conservative writer, which has robbed him of his edge; has grossly overpaid a proofreader and editor who left him with a text full of errors; has devised a crime more silly than scary; has his characters pause too often in their dialogue marked by annoying ellipses; has told his story without twists or turns or an unexpected ending; and last but not least, and without a shred of satire, has revealed his political bias when we discover that the brains behind the crime just happens to be (shudder!) a regular guest on Fox News. As if Mr. Travis could imagine no greater evidence of character guilt.
But congratulations are still in order. In writing a book as bad as both his previous novels were good, Mr. Travis has achieved a success, though not the kind he intended. He has successfully managed to ruin his reputation with one embarrassingly bad book.
I subscribe to a really great email list called Bookbub. They send me links to free and deeply discounted books. I have over 1500 free books saved on my Kindle cloud. I don’t read most of them, honestly, but occasionally I will stumble upon one that catches my attention. Creatures of Appetite by Todd Travis was one of them. I read it back in 2014 and have anxiously been awaiting the sequel, checking Amazon and Travis’ Facebook page periodically. And then, one day, there it was. Trophies.
Creatures of Appetite follows two FBI agents on the hunt for a serial killer, or two. She’s young and enthusiastic. He is grumpy and cynical. Both are brilliant and make for an excellent team.
Fast forward a few years and Trophies begins. She’s still FBI, he’s retired and they don’t speak. Women are being kidnapped and no one knows where they go or who has done it. They have to reconcile and work together to find these women.
These books are fairly graphic in language and violence (fair warning) but I really enjoyed them. Most free books that I stumble upon are really poorly written. Creatures of Appetite has over 1000 stars on Amazon, most being 4 and 5 stars. As of today, it’s 3.99, but keep an eye out because it could drop to FREE, again!
I love how Emma Kane's character got so strong here and Thorne got a little soft---more human. Again, holy shit that ending. I CANNOT WAIT for the third book!! Hopefully it really does get released this year as well. :D
Even though I thought this book was great, I was only going to give it 4 stars because of the need for some editing. However, by the time I finished it, I loved it so much I gave it 5 anyway! The story was even better than the first in the series, Creatures of Appetite. Despite my issues with the editing, it was written better and plotted out perfectly. After the exciting ending, I’m very anxious to read the next one and see how Kane and Thorne move on! What needs a little work is a handful of typos, two instances of a few paragraphs repeated immediately below themselves, and the extreme overuse of the “....”. Now, I’m a big fan of using “....”, but not over and over and over. Most every instance, it could have been replaced with a comma, period, hyphen or just left out. It was very distracting early on but its use did lessen as the story progressed. These issues aside, it wouldn’t affect my want for reading more.
After stumbling upon the first book in this series on Amazon I quickly fell in love. The plot, the characters, everything about the book drew me in and made it one of the best and most terrifyingly creepy books I had read that year. A little while after posting my review for Creatures of Appetite the author commented on it telling me the second one was available, so I knew I had to purchase it and start reading immediately.
Once again I was hooked from the first chapter. I still absolutely love the characters that are either being reintroduced or brought out for the first time. As I continued to get farther through the book however I was slightly disappointed, where was my favorite character?! I needed Thorne in my life (or at least in my book)! W hile it took a while for him to appear I was happy he did as I felt like after the way the first book ended (which blew my flipping mind) it was going to be cause for some craziness between him and Emma. Sadly however it really wasn't brought up. Yes the case was referenced, but it was very brief.
For most people the content of this book would probably have come as a shock, and I think that had I not just finished reading some very crazy books sort of along the same kidnapping lines I probably would have been completely taken aback by what I had read. I thought it was a very clever and disturbing way to take what was happening with these kidnapped girls and give it that Todd Travis flare that I fell in love with in the first one.
While I did sort of guess who was a part of the gruesome disappearances I did not expect just how involved and deep it got. I was very very happy that I wasn't able to guess everything that was going on because that is usually what happens.
I think what made this a four star book for me was the lack of a creep factor I felt while reading it. I really wanted to feel genuinely scared about what was happening to these girls and even though I enjoyed what I read I felt like there could be more fear. I look forward to continuing this series should more be written because I feel like things will get even crazier with the Mercy killer coming back. What with that and our wonderful couple potentially working things out should make for a glorious read!
Please remember that I do not post reviews to sway anyone one way or another when it comes to reading. I post MY thoughts of the books I have finished so you can decide for yourself if it is something you may consider trying. I do recommend reading the first book by Todd called Creatures of Appetite if you are considering reading this book as it will give you background on the characters. Always remember to be respectful of other people's opinions as they are doing the same thing I am and giving their thoughts!! If you would like to see my review of anything in particular remember to follow my blog at brutalbookworm.blogspot.com and comment!
I love Emma and Jacob. The first book left me shocked and creeped out, but wanting more. Maybe I'm jaded, but I found the second book less shocking, and maybe less suspenseful, because this time I had full confidence in Kane and Thorne to bring down the bad guys. I still couldn't put it down, and found myself reading my whole day away to find out what was going to happen.
I absolutely loved this book! I just started getting into thrillers, suspense and crime books recently. TROPHIES has it all. A Badass female heroine, a slightly less Badass young male hero and an older Badass male who is a great supporting hero. Someone has taken Amy from her car and left little clue as to why or where they have taken her. Eli, as long time friend of Amy's is very concerned about her as are her co workers and friends. Eli arranges for Emma Kane to assist him in finding out what happened to Amy. The story that follows is mind numbing and hard to believe but totally believable at the same time. Intrigue, suspense, chaos, violence, murder, corrupt wealthy men, alone vulnerable women until Emma Kane comes on the scene! I recommend this book to anyone who likes this kind of read. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
Much time has passed between the first Kane/Thorne novel and Trophies. We seem Kane stride put on her own, helping the younger FBI agent Eli who wants to solve the kidnapping of Amy, his unrequited crush.
Of course, Thorne has to get involved and we learn about what has happened with Kane and Thorne in the intervening years between the first book and Trophies.
Plot wise, I’m sure I’ve read something similar, but I’ve racked my brain and can’t come up with anything yet. However, I really enjoy Todd Travis’s writing. Both books of his that I have read so far, I’ve not been bored at any point. In fact, I would say that he writes much better than some, more well known crime authors. This series has definitely hooked me, and I’m off to read the next instalment of Kane/Thorne.
Wow, Travis delivers another entertaining thriller. This is book #2 in a series featuring two characters, Emma Kane and Jacob Thorne. Book #1 (Creatures of Appetite) was slightly better and had a twist at the end I’ll never forget and this was a nice follow up. I think my only complaint here is that there just isn’t enough depth to Kane and Thorne. I feel like after 2 books I should know more about them. Its a quick read with short chapters (very Patterson-esque) and lots of dialogue but this style doesn’t leave much room for character development. If you’re looking for a quick entertaining read pick this up now (after you’ve read book 1 of course). If you’re looking for something original with a lot of detail and deep characters, you may want to look elsewhere. Still a solid 4 stars in my opinion for what it is.
I got this free on Amazon. I freaking hate the end! Hahaha but there's a third one so it's okay. I really liked Kane! I wish I could meet someone like her(? And of course Jacob. It was hilarious at some points. The two of them were made for each other. The writing was entertaining. It was a little predictable, though but The plot twists kept me reading. I really enjoyed this. Recommended! He pensado que quizá te guste esta cita de "TROPHIES (Emma Kane / Jacob Thorne Book 2)", de Todd Travis .
“We are not property. If we die today, then we die free, on our own two feet. Not as cattle or stock. We live or die today as free women. Let’s go,”.
I very much enjoyed how Emma Kane became a vigilante years after being partners with Jacob Thorne. Although I found the whole premise of old rich white guys raping and murdering women to be tiring and overly political (considering with how this world is today), the end was pretty badass. I'm personally over hearing about the entire liberal/conservative arguments, but at least this was a decent storyline so I could overlook those parts. Personally I prefer politics to be kept out of the books I read because it already dominates every day life, so I'm done hearing about it, which is why I gave this book 4 stars. I'm glad however that the Mercy Killer was mentioned, and how this one ended I am excited to see what the third novel brings! Already purchased the next two books in the series!
WORD OF CAUTION, READ BOOK ONE FIRST AS RHIS ONE GIVES AWAY THE GOODS OF BOOK ONE.
This book is more a Kane book than a Thorne books and again, is fairly non stop action, it does have rape and torture in it so not for the faint of heart or those easily offended.
Not having read the first book in the series, I wasn't familiar with the characters going into this one - probably a good thing in the case of this Jacob Thorne person, whom I couldn't stand. This was a solid, fairly entertaining mystery thriller but went a little overboard on the amount of clichés shoved into the dialogue and the comic book villain bad guys.
Gruesome, But you should definitely find it interesting, chilling and not overly descriptive but enough to let your mind do it for you. I wish Thorne had a larger part but was interesting to see how Kane is evolving.
Main thing, enjoyed immensely and want more (I finished all three in days) I have also read a book of his short stories (The Living And The Dead) and they were from a fresh perspective.
Quite an action novel with most unusual characters. It moves at a fast pace and keeps the reader riveted, unable to wait to find out what happens next. And you just may not like what happens next.
A real spell binder of a story. Just couldn't put it down Kane and Thorpe are a package, a very special package, with a history behind them. When they do meet up, the story catches fire, and what a blaze!
Great story, could not put it down once I started reading. Complicated plot, very entertaining read. Certainly appeals to someone who wants to immerse themselves into the story. Thanks to the author for a terrific series.
I wasn't sure how Todd Travis could top Creatures of Appetite, but holy hell, he did, and then some! The plot had a steady pace that seemed to build to a crescendo. Then, as in Creatures of Appetite, my mind was blown once again. Trophies is a brilliant read, and I'm ready for the next journey Kane and Thorne embark on.
