Dr. Case Flynn, hospital heartthrob, was finally on the run -- and Dr. Sharla Shakarian was just the woman to catch him! Renowned for sweet-talking nurses into his arms, Case found his fail-safe Irish charm didn't work with the lovely but forewarned pediatrician! Sharla was sure she could resist the temptation of a fling with Case, until the surgeon's sensitive fingers made her nerve endings sizzle. The hungry abandon with which they kissed made their protests that it wasn't serious impossible to sustain, but neither would admit just how wonderful if felt tumbling headlong into a real romance. Case swore he wasn't the marrying kind, but Sharla prescribed patience... and more than a little passion. Love was his sickness... and she was the only cure in sight.
Barbara Schroeder was born on 28 October 1946 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, USA. She worked as nurse, before she married William P. Boswell, a attorney, and they had three daughters.
She has been a longtime romance novel fan, becoming hooked on the romances by Harlequin back in the mid-‘70s when she was home with her three small daughters. When the youngest reached school age in 1983, she wanted something to do with her extra time. She thought about going back to nursing, but didn't care to deal with hospital shifts. She'd often made up stories in her head and/or continued the stories that she'd read, so it seemed like a fun idea to try to write a story of her own. It took a lot more effort and organization than the loosely strung-together scenes she'd run through her mind, but she was right about the fun part! She enjoyed the whole process and wrote a story that she knew she would enjoy reading. She sent it off and was thrilled when it was accepted! It was even more exciting to see her name on the book cover. Some 50-plus books later, it's still a thrill to see her name on the book and it's still fun to make up stories — at least most of the time!
Barbara gets her ideas from everywhere but especially from reading, which she loves to do. Sometimes, just a sentence in a newspaper or a magazine will spark an idea to develop into a romance. Other times, she'll be inspired by another romance novel and she will try to put her own spin on a favorite old plot. Barbara believes that we all have our preferences — she's always been partial to the "secret baby" story line. That, plus the "marriage of convenience" and class or family conflicts are some of her particular favorites.
Her three daughters are all grown up now, and she and her husband are the proud grandparents of a beautiful little grandson. They also have three cats who seem to think that they are the rulers of their house. They are terribly spoiled, and they just might be right.
This book was wonderful. A romance where there shouldn't be any. They are both doctors. She's the new doctor in charge of premature babies, and he is a trauma surgeon as well known for his track record with the nurses as he is for his skills as a surgeon. And I have to say, he does come across as kinda sleazy in the beginning. Sharla is a beautiful 31 year old woman with a lot of self confidence and a big happy extended family. Case is 40 year old a ladies man whose sworn to never marry. They are both attracted to each other, but Case usually only targets nurses and not doctors. And Sharla doesn't do casual sex.
But somehow he can't stay away from her. And she keeps him on his toes. He's not a heartless man despite being a womanizer, as shown from his interactions with his patients. And for a book about a womanizer it is surprisingly free of OWs. Not a one to be found in the book, but we do hear allusions to his past. Once it became obvious how obsessed he was becoming with Sharla, I didn't mind his past anymore.
He had his reasons for being so against marriage of course. The usual bad parents. And Sharla's no fool and can see that there are psychological reasons for him being the way he is. She never pushes him, but she never lets him push her either. The scene where he introduces her to his siblings was really touching.
And they are surprisingly good together. He's no alpha-hole, and she's pretty even headed. And they communicate! AND... no third act break up! PLUS (wonder of wonders in a harlequin) an epilogue! A romance that was more cute than angsty. The only reason this took so long to read was that I was only able to find it in paperback. I will definitely be looking for more by this author!!!
I loved this book(the first time I read it, it was more of skimming it), it was wonderful seeing the hero, who is anti-marriage, has a reputation with women(nurses mainly) and a workaholic fall for the heroine, who didn't demand anything from him, withstood all his tantrums and attempts at sabotage and instead just loved him, so much so it was him in the end begging for commitment while she was content with just them living together.
This is truly a fun read with a delightful h. The H is a commitment-phobe, playboy, man-whore. Due to a less than loving childhood he and his twin sister have made a vow of "rather dead than wed". Both the H and the h are very high achieving doctors in the same hospital. The H is 40 years old and has a reputation with a capital "R". He's never had a relationship, he only does casual sex, he targets nurses who know the score. When he makes an exception and makes play for h she shoots him down. He vacillates between outrage that she laughs at him and humor because she really is funny. What's great about this romance is that you know that the h is the only woman who could ever get this man to deal with his very strong defense mechanisms and fall in love.
"Bedside Manners" is the story of Case and Sharla and WOW. Case is the cynic brother of Shay we had met in the previous book. Trauma surgeon and playboy extraodinarie, he has gained notoriety with the nursing staff and refuses to commit due to his dark past with his parents'. When neonatologist Sharla joins his hospital, he is instantly attracted- but she thinks of him as a skirt chaser and rebuffs him. That leads to a relentless pursual but Sharla is a strong Armenian lass and handles his charm with her wit. Soon they embark on a no commitment relationship, but as Sharla falls in love, will she be able to convince Case of his obvious feelings too? Strong, successful and funny heroine who never backed down or hid her feelings, charming and determine hero, scorching chemistry and an adorable epilogue fill this read. I really enjoyed it from start to end and it made me laugh out loud too many times. Cant help but love Sharla and how she broke his shell. This book doesnt paint Candy (his twin) in a great light but I cant wait to read about her. So happy to read about Shay's HEA. Being from the medical field, I usually stay away from medicine related romances- but this.. AWESOME. Safe/ SWME 4.75/5
4.5 *** Case is the ultimate commitment- phobic playboy surgeon. He has a legendary reputation among the nurses at the Hospital. But he finds his match in Dr Sharla. It was fun seeing him throwing tantrums and fighting the inevitable. I love to see a playboy fall hard for the one woman he can't resist. Sharla is a great heroine, I absolutely loved her. She knows him so well, she understands him from the inside out. She is so sweet, facing Case's panicky attempts to sabotage their growing relationship with a huge reserve of patience and humor.
A very besotted hero, but he is fighting it really really hard. I was a bit annoyed with him at times, since, because he is in denial, he acted like a petulant brat towards the heroine.
I liked the fact that they are both doctors. I always prefer when there is an equality of status with the couple. The heroine is also very successful in her field AND she really knows how to handle the relationship shy Hero.
I could call it verging on manipulation, but she was quite good at it. She wrapped the Hero so firmly around her finger, he didn’t know what hit him 😁
